Disclaimer: This is a work of fiction. I do not know Orlando Bloom. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
Orlando sat alone on the bed in he and Veronica’s London flat. Spread out before him on the bed is a bunch of photographs. Veronica kept bugging him about picking out which ones he would like to put into a photo album. He knew how much this photo album meant to her so while she was visiting her parents that afternoon he thought he would take a few minutes to look through them. He picked up a couple pictures of the two of them at the Pirates of the Caribbean 2 premiere. He smiled as he placed them on the pile of ‘keepers’.
He glanced around the mess of pictures on the bed but he could not find one that he knew he definitely wanted to put in the photo album. He leaned over the side of the bed and reached down into tox oox on the floor in which the pictures had been stored. He pushed a couple of photos that were on top to the side and says to himself “There it is!” He picked up the picture and held it remembering that day. They had been dancing at Veronica’s sister’s wedding reception last year. The wedding photographer was taking pictures of all the couples on the dance floor so when he came to Veronica and Orlando he assumed that they were a couple. The photographer said, “Smile!” and snapped the picture before they could protest. He remembers that they confessed their feelings for each other that evening and they have been together ever since. He smiled as he placed the photo on tile.ile.
Orlando glanced back down into the box and saw the corner of an envelope sticking out from beneath more photos. He reached down and lifted the envelope by the visible corner. The outside of the envelope gave him noe ase as to its contents. He lifted the flap and removed what was inside. The item on top was a photo of him and his ex-girlfriend, Cindy, sitting outside his mom’s house in Canterbury. He flipped through the rest of the items and found out that they were all photos of he and Cindy. He thought he had gotten rid of everything that reminded him of Cindy. His initial reaction at seeing the photos was to rip them into tiny pieces. He did not want to remember her. He stuffed the photos back into the envelope and held it out in front of him with both hands. Hean ran ripping the envelope but something made him stop. He opened the envelope again and thumbed through the photos. A smile stretched across his face as he found the photo he was looking for. Although it was a picture of him sitting next to Cindy with his arm on thek ofk of the bench behind her, what he remembers is who was sitting next to him. Veronica. It was on that day that they first met. Cindy and Veronica were classmates at Guildhall. They both took a lot of the same music classes. Orlando and Cindy introduced Veronica to Orlando’s friend, Colin, and soon the four of them were inseparable. He sighed loudly. Maybe thinking about Cindy again wasn’t that bad after all. If it weren’t for his dating Cindy he probably never would have met Veronica. He slipped the photo back into the envelope and placed it back in the box on the floor.
One year earlier…
“Hey, Ronnie!” Steve the bartender greets Veronica as she walks in the door of the little Los Angeles bar. She swings her purse up on the bar and plops down on a barstool. It was early Friday evening and the bar was empty except for a few regulars.
“Hey, Steve. What’s happnin’?” Veronica mumbles and folds her arms in front of her on the bar.
“Nothin’ much. What can I get ya?” Steve asks placing a paper coaster on the bar in front of her.
“Whatever’s closest,” Veronica says waving the back of her hand in Steve direction. She lets her head drop onto her folded arms.
“Jeeze! What happened to you?” Steve asks pouring a shot of whiskey. “You look terrible.” He gives the shot glass a little shove toward her.
Veronica snaps her head back up, picks up the shot glass, and slams it down her throat in one motion. She makes the typical alcohol face and sets the empty shot glass back on the bar.
“I hope nothing happened between you and Jonathan,” Steve says. He was worried. He had never seen her like this before.
Veronica props up her head on her left hand and spins the shot glass on the bar with her right. Her eyes begin to fill with tears. He could hear her throat beginning to tighten as she spoke. “Jonathan left me,” she says quietly.
“Oh, Ronnie,” Steve says gently. He reached frd ard and gently rubs her arm. “I’m so sorry.”
Steve let Veronica cry for a minute or two as he fills a glass with water. He set the glass on the bar in front of her. When she starts to wipe the tears from her face he asks gently, “What happened?”
She takes a couple deep breaths and lets them out slowly. “He said he just didn’t love me anymore,” she replies fighting off another sob. She succeeds and continues. “He said that it would probably be better if we see other people.” Steve detects a note of sarcasm in her voice. She lets out a little laugh as she picks up the glass of water. “I thie ale already was,” she adds and takes a drink.
“Son of a bitch,” Steve says under his breath.
Veronica raises her eyebrows and nods in agreement.
“Well, I know it’s hard to believe right now,” Steve says. “But you’re better off without a guy like Jonathan.”
“Yeah, I guess you’re right,” Veronica replies with a weak smile.
“Of course I’m right!” Steve says throwing his hands up above his head. He looks over at the Jukebox on the wall. “I know what will make you feel a little better.” He walks toward the Jukebox.
“More whiskey?” Veronica’s spirits perk up as she watches him walk away.
“No. No more whiskey. We both know you’re not a drinker.” Steve puts some money into the Jukebox and selects a couple songs.
She knew immediately what it was as soon as she heard the first note; “I’ll be alright without you” by Journey. “Good song!” she tells Steve as he walks back behind the bar. She sits at the bar just listening to Steve Perry’s voice as he sings the lyrics. Halfway through the song she finds herself lip-synching as she stares down ae gle glass in front of her. She closes her eyes and just listens to the song. When the song ends she opens her eyes and is startled when she realizes that Steve is sitting on the stool next to her. She smiles up at him and says, “Thank you.” She turns her stool toward him and stands up. “You’re a true friend, Steve,” she says giving him a big hug. She excuses herself to the restroom as Steve walks back behind the bar.
Orlando walks in the door of a dimly lit little bar and takes a stool at the bar. He takes the tiny velvet ring box out of his jacket pocket and holds it in front of him. “What can I get ya?” the bartender asks placing a paper coaster on the bar in front of him.
“Just gimme the strongest thing you got back there, mate,” Orlando replies setting the box on the bar in front of him. He rests his chin in his folded arms on the bar and stares at the ring box. “Thanks,” he says as the bartender sets the shot glass on the bar in front of him. Orlando slaps a couple bills on the bar and does the shot of whiskey. He then resumes staring at the ring box trying to figure out what went wrong.
“Orlando? Orlando Bloom? Is that you?” he hears a female voice call out from the other end of the bar.
‘I come in here for a drink after breaking up with my girlfriend and I get recognized by a fan! Unbelievable!’ Orlando thinks to himself. He slowly turns his head in the direction of the voice. His eyes grow wide as he recognizes the woman at the other end of the bar. “Ronnie?” he calls out with a smile. “Veronica Burns?”
“Yeah!” Veronica replies standing up. She walks toward him with open arms. He stands as she approaches and welcomes her warm hug.
“How are you?” Veronica asks as her voice crawithwith excitement. She backs out of his embrace and they hold each other’s hands between them.
“I’m good! I’m good!” Orlando replies with just as much enthusiasm. “How are you?”
“Not too bad! Not too bad!” she replies.
“Would you like to join me down here?” Orlando says motioning toward the stool next to his.
“Yeah, just let me get my things,” Veronica replies pointing her thumb back over her shoulder. She turns around and starts to walk back to get her stuff but stops when she sees Steve placing her purse and glass on the bar next to Orlando’s empty shot glass. “Thanks, love,” she says with a smile.
“No problem,” Steve replies with a smile. “Can I gettcha anything else?” he asks Orlando.
“Ah … yeah … just a glass of water. Thanks,” Orlando replies.
Veronica and Orlando sit on two stools next to each other. “So, how long has it been?” Orlando asks.
“I’d say six years or so,” Veronica replies.
“Wow. Six years,” Orlando repeats and shakes his head. Steve sets the glass of water on the bar in front of him. “Thanks, mate,” Orlando says and Steve walks away. “So, how have you been?” He reaches over and gently pats Veronica’s knee. ”Are you still singing with Riverdance?”
“Yeah, yeah. I was with the Liffey Company for a couple years touring Europe. Then I wanted to visit the States so I joined the Lee Company to tour North America. The tour actually just finished up in LA last week. I just decided to stick around and see the sites. How about you? I see you’ve been working quite a lot since we graduated from Guildhall.”
“Yeah,” Orlando says with a laugh. “Yeah I have. Well, right now we’re shooting the second Pirates movie here in LA. I think we’re gonna wrap in a couple weeks so I was thinking about going back home for a much needed vacation.”
“Yeah. I’ll be going back home soon, too. My sister’s getting married next month.” Veronica says. Oh! Oh! Which one? Nikki?” Orlando asks.
“No. Casey. My older sister.” Veronica replies.
“Oh. Nikki’s the youngest, right?” Orlando asks.
“Yeah. And there ain’t no way my baby sister’s gonna get married before me!” Veronica replies with a laugh and pointing to her chest with her thumb.
Orlando suddenly remembers the ring box still sitting on the bar in front of him. His smile disappears as he stares at the box.
“Orli? What’s wrong?” Veronica asks. He picks up the ring box and hands it to her. “What’s this?” she asks and opens the box. Her eyes grow wide as she looks at the at least two karat diamond solitaire ring. “Oh Orli! This is beautiful! Who’s it for?” She closes the box and hands it back to him.
“Remember Cindy Matthews from Guildhall?” Orlando asks running one hand through his hair and putting the ring box back in his jacket pocket with the other.
“Cindy Matthews! Of course! We were best friends in school! Are you two seeing each other again?” Veronica asks.
“Well, we were … up until half an hour ago. I came home early from the set this evening to take her out to a romantic dinner. You know, champagne, candles, the whole thing. I was gonna propose during dessert. I had it planned for weeks. I knew she would be so surprised. Little did I know that she had a surprise for me.”
“What happened?” Veronica asks with wide eyes.
“I came home to find her and some guy going at it on my living room floor,” Orlando replies taking a drink of his water.
Veronica covers her mouth with her hand in disbelief. She drops her hand to his knee and says, “Oh, Orli. I’m so sorry.”
“Thanks. But, ya know I was thinking about it and it was probably the best thing that’s ever happened to me,” Orlando says leaning back sideways with one elbow on the back of the stool.
“How’s that?” Veronica asks confused.
“Well, when we got back together when I came back from New Zealand I had my suspicions that she was seeing someone else. I even confronted her about it. But, she said that she wasn’t and that she would never do that to me. Blah, blah, blah. But, now I know that she was seeing someone the whole time. If she had been home by herself today … I would’ve made biggbiggest mistake of my life.”
There was a moment of silence between them. “Wow,” Veronica says at last. “I would’ve never thought about it like that.”
There was another moment of silence. Finally Orlando shakes his head as if to rid his head of his thoughts. “Well, enough about my pathetic love life,” Orlando says with a laugh. “How’s yours? Are you seeing anyone?”
“Yeah, I was. My love life’s in the shitter as well!” she says with a laugh.
“Oh, no …” Orlando says with a laugh.
Veronica nods and says, “I was seeing this guy, Jonathan, who I met while we were on tour. I thought everything was going really well when, out of the blue, he calls me this afternoon to tell me that he thinks we should see other people.”
“Awww. That sucks. I’m so sorry,” Orlando says. “Do you think there was another woman?” he asks as Veronica takes a drink of water.
She just nods with a mouthful of water. She swallows and says, “Yeah. I think there was.”
There was another moment of silence between them when Orlando finally says, “Would you like to go get something to eat?”
“I would love to,” Veronica replies with a smile.
They both stand up and prepare to leave. Veronica pulls a few bills out of her purse and puts them on the bar to pay for her drink. “Hey, Steve!” Veronica calls out looking toward Steve at the other end of the bar. “I’m gonna go say goodbye,” she says to Orlando as she walks toward the other end of the bar where Steve is chatting with a couple regulars. “We’re gonna go get something to eat,” she says pointing her thumb back over her shoulder. She walks up to the bar and stands between two bar stools.
“Okay, love,” Steve replies and holds out his hands over the bar. She places her hands in his. He glances over at Orlando who is already standing by the door. “You gonna be okay?” he asks gently giving her hands a little squeeze.
She turns her head to look back at Orlando. “Yeah,” she says and looks back at Steve with a smile. ”Yeah, I think so.”
