Summary: Watching them asleep together on the couch, she finds herself remembering all the things they used to do together when they were younger.
Her boys were home, and that was all that mattered. She was trying not to think about the fact that they’d been wandering around the house all night and she had to be up early for work. Because they were home. They’d been trying to be quiet but she was too acutely attuned to them to not hear them. But it sounded like they’d finally settled down. She glanced at the clock and sighed, knowing she wouldn’t get back to sleep in the few hours before her alarm was due to get off. The TV was playing quietly downstairs but she knew neither of them were watching it; they had fallen asleep, soft snores rising up to greet her ears.
Smiling to herself, she climbed out of bed and slipped on a robe. Opening a cupboard, she pulled out a large blanket, draping it over her arm as she made her way down stairs. The light was dimmed, casting soft shadows across the hallway as she pushed the door open. An old black and white movie was playing on the TV but, as she’d realised earlier, both her sons were asleep on the couch; Joel’s head resting on Benji’s shoulder and Benji’s arms wrapped almost protectively around his younger twin.
Her smile grew fond and she leaned against the wall, holding the blanket tightly to her chest as she watched her children sleep. They way they’d always slept, and probably always would sleep; together. Her eyes misted over and she remembered…
As babies, if they were ever apart they would both scream and scream, once even making themselves sick, until they were put back together again, when they’d cuddle up against each other, Benjamin straight away putting his arm around Joel; she hadn’t been able to tell the difference between them back then but hindsight tells her it was always Benjamin’s arm around Joel.
As toddlers, they’d chatted to each other in not quite English and Josh hadn’t been able to understand them. He’d thrown many a tantrum when he’d wanted to play with his little brothers, tried to play with them or to talk to them but they’d ignore him, chatting and playing with each other, only paying attention to anyone else when they wanted something.
Their first steps were taken together, in perfect synchronisation and holding hands. They’d fallen over at the same time as well; she’d thought one had fallen and pulled the other down but as it happened again and again she’d realised they’d fallen at exactly the same time, Benjamin holding Joel as he’d cried when he’d hurt his ankle.
They only ever played with each other, completely ignoring any of the other kids when they came up to them. She’d always hoped that when they started school, they would be made to interact with others, but their teachers had seemed happy to just let them be with each other.
At the same time, she’d tried to start making them in separate beds; something she’d failed to succeed in doing for years, worried that the other kids might find out and pick on them. Every night, she’d tuck them into their own beds, ignoring their tears and tantrums, then turn the light off and shut the door. Before she’d even reached the top stair, she’d hear soft footsteps padding across the carpet of their room, and in the morning she would always find them in them same bed, Joel curled up in Benjamin’s arms, no matter whose bed they were in. As they’d grown older, they’d started to realise that she was not so much unhappy with, but that she didn’t like their sleeping arrangements and were always back in their own beds when she woke them up, but she’d still hear them padding across the carpet morning and night.
When they’d started high school, she’d been concerned that they’d be bullied for their closeness, which, amongst other things, they were. But the taunts did nothing to separate them, to make them want to forge their own identities; if anything the bullying made them grow even closer than they were before.
One year, Joel was picked for the baseball team and she was pretty sure that this would be it; Joel would finally interact with other kids, would make friends other than Benjamin and Benjamin would have to find a different hobby since he’d be unable to play baseball with Joel after school. But no; as ever she was wrong. Benjamin threw all his energies into improving his game and, finally, after six months, was also good enough to be picked for the team
There was one incident just after their 15th birthday that she knew she would never forget; it was a Saturday morning and she walked into their to see if they wanted anything from the shops. They were sitting on the edge of Joel’s bed, their arms around each other. And kissing. Each other. On the lips. With tongues. She’d taken a step back, her hands flying to her face, a low gasp escaping her and they’d stopped at the noise, eyes growing wide, sliding away from each other on the bed. They’d start explaining at the same time, talking quickly and over each other, but she couldn’t understand them. She’d sat down opposite them on the edge of Benjamin’s bed, listening as he’d told her that Joel wanted to ask this girl he liked out on a date but didn’t know how to kiss and he was showing him how. She’d nodded and left the room, telling herself she believed them; they were her children, of course she believed what they were telling her. Why would they lie to her?
Through their teens they’d continued sleeping in the same bed until they were too big for it. Every evening she’d hear a dull thump as two mattresses landed on the centre of the bedroom floor, pillows, duvets and twins quickly joining them. The room was always put back to rights in the morning before the rest of the house woke up.
Looking back, she probably shouldn’t have been as shocked as she was when she opened their door to find them naked on top of their makeshift bed, doing much much more than just sleeping, the sounds of sex… the sounds of her boys having sex assaulting her. She’d screamed and run down the stairs and they’d followed her a few moments later. It was never ever ever mentioned again, but from that day the twins had a lock on their bedroom door and she always knocked before entering.
And, it seemed, despite everything that had happened to them, nothing had changed. Shaking herself, she pushed herself up from the wall and rounded the couch. Crouching down in front of it, she unfolded the blanket and spread it over them, Benji stirring as she did, smiling sleepily at her.
She smoothed his hair down and pressed a kiss to his temple. “Go back to sleep, Benjamin,” she whispered, tucking the blanket in around him. Pressing a kiss to the top of Joel’s head, she stood up and flicked the light off as she went back upstairs to get ready for work.
