Chapter 1 – The Call
Part 1 – Stuck in a Moment
She was running in an open field towards the man of her dreams. A look of sheer joy spread across her face, and was felt throughout her entire being. She called out to him “Orlando, Orlando my love.” But suddenly the sky darkened and a feeling of dread and doom came over her, she stopped dead in her tracks and looked around. Orlando had vanished and the whole field was dark, she couldn’t see 5 feet in front of her. She heard her name being called “Amy, turn around…Amy…Amy…..Amy wake up.” She darted straight up out of bed breathing heavily and looked around, she heard it, that familiar dreaded voice. Sighing she picked up the phone. “What?” Silence, then a heavy sigh. “Ame, can we talk?” Amy turned to stare at the digital clock on the bedside table, quarter after three in the morning. “Matt, do you know what time it is?” “Yes, I’m sorry, but I needed to talk to you, hear your voice.” Crawling out of bed and putting a shirt on she sat in front of her computer and turned it on. “Matt, we’ve been over this. You can’t call me at all hours of the day anymore, we’re not together, we’re not even friends now. I asked you to leave me alone.” “I know Amy, I’m sorry, it’s just hard you know?” Amy logged into her e-mail and saw she had several from Matt. “I see you’ve e-mailed me quite a bit today.” “Yea I was thinking about flying over next month, wanted to know if you were interested in having a chat, coffee, something.” “Matt, do you know me at all? In our two and a half year relationship you don’t know I can’t stand coffee? Hey I’ve got some work to do, how about you get online and we’ll continue there.” She heard him stumble and trip over something on the floor and heard him swear to himself. “You okay?” Silence then the sound of a computer starting up. “Huh? Oh yea I just tripped over a shoe getting to the computer.” Amy signed on to AOL instant messenger and set to replying to e-mails waiting for Matt to sign on. She read one of the several e-mails from Matt: “Ames, love, I miss you terribly, and have been thinking about you constantly. I wish so badly that things had turned out differently for us, we could have made such a great couple, don’t you think? Anyway I was thinking, I have a month off from shooting next month and I was wondering if you’d mind if I paid you a visit or maybe you would like to come here. Australia is lovely.” Amy sighed, this man was relentless, when would he listen to her, they would never work. Then it popped up: “Instant message from doormatt3 Accept, Yes or No.” She sighed to herself, and clicked yes.
Doormatt3: Hey!
ElvinAmy: Matt. Morning.
ElvinAmy: What’s up?
Doormatt3: I love you.. :-x
ElvinAmy: Sigh, do you ever stop :-P
Doormatt3: No, hey have I told you about the movie I’m working on?
ElvinAmy: No..Do tell
Doormatt3: Uhm well I’m an assistant to the director..Kind of anyway. I take care of all the crap he can’t do and then some. Anyway directo, I , I don’t know if you’ve heard of him.. ElvinAmy: Are you serious? Orlando?
Doormatt3: Sure am Ames
ElvinAmy: Lucky bastard.
Doormatt3: Heh, you could come here, visit, I could probably get you on set sometime..
ElvinAmy: I don’t think so, as tempting as that is, I can’t. Thanks anyway. I’m tired. I need sleep. Bye Matt
Doormatt3: nighnight my sweet.
Auto response from ElvinAmy: I never thought you were a fool But darling look at you You gotta stand up straight Carry your own weight These tears are going nowhere baby You've got to get yourself together You've got stuck in a moment And now you can't get out of it
Doormatt3: Good song..
Part 2 – Part of Me is Gone
Matt sat alone in the dark listening to the radio. He held a frame in his hand, with a photograph of himself and Amy together in Florida when they had first met. It didn’t seem like two and a half years ago to him, but it was, and Amy always made that clear to him. “That was then this is now Matt, we’re over.” He felt anger rising up again, he had tried to forget her, but whenever he felt weak, he called her, and this happened. He was angry, he missed her and he would have her again. He slammed the picture down on the table next to him breaking the glass and ripping the photograph. Suddenly he got very emotional crying and apologizing to the woman in the picture taking the glass out of it and wiping it all to the floor with his hand. He stared at a large piece on the floor, taking it up cut a long gash in the palm of his hand. The song on the radio echoed through his soul, setting to work he stood on his bed and pressed his hand to the wall sliding it down diagonally then repeated the line the other way creating a capital A. “There's another world inside of me That you may never see There's secrets in this life That I can't hide Somewhere in this darkness There's a light that I can't find Maybe it's too far away... Maybe I'm just blind...” Matt lied down on his bed and sobbed into his pillow when his work was done. The wall read Amy with a heart next to it.
Part 3 – Loving Feeling
At exactly six in the morning Amy’s alarm clock decided for her that it was time to get up and great the world bright eyed and bushy tailed. She yawned rolled off her stomach and looked out the window. She signed and mumbled “Birds, mating, noise.” She rubbed some sleep out of her eye, sat up, and slipped on her pink bunny slippers and headed for the bathroom. Amy slipped out of her flannel pajama bottoms and tank top and silently stepped into the shower. She shivered when the water hit body washing away the previous evenings problems, and felt a great weight lifted. She sighed and left her troubles behind for a nice relaxing shower and mng. ng. Flipping her shower radio on, Britney Spears’ voice came like hundreds of tiny nails stuck in her head. “Ugh, ewe ewe ewe” and she changed the station. “Ahh that’s better.” The Coors Breathless.
She stepped out of the shower completely relaxed and refreshed feeling rather good about starting the day when the phone rang. “Gah not now, don’t let it be him.” She grabbed the towel off the rack wrapped it around herself and another for her hair, she stepped out into the cool bedroom and shivered. She picked the phone up off of the bedside table where she left it and pushed the talk button. “Ello?” She barely got out, her voice somewhat scratchy and irritated from karaoke the previous night. “Amy dear how are you?” Amy looked puzzled at the wall. “Mom?” “Yes honey, we need to talk, are you busy today?” “Mom.” “Yes we’ve established it’s me dear.” Her mother said slightly annoyed. “Mom, uhm, what about?” “Not on the phone Amy.” “But, what about…” Amy trailed off not wanting to speak of the bitter fight of several months ago. “Forgotten dear, I hope you’ll forgive me.” Amy thought a moment and quite perplexed asker her mom “what’s going on?” Her mother laughed on the other end of the phone. “Must something be going on for a mother to call her daughter and want to see her?” “For us, yes.” “Amy, can I see you today or not?” Amy fumbled for her planner on the bedside table. “Just a second Mom.” “Alright.” She flipped through the pages for today’s date and scanned the page for free time. “Okay mom, how about lunch, 1pm?” “Sounds good, my place yeh? I want it to be private.” “See you later mom.” Amy pushed the end button and fell back to her bed with a sigh.
Part 4 – A Long Day
Amy’s life fell back into its normal routine, Matt wasn’t heard from for a while and Amy was happy. Her meeting with her mother had turned out well and they made up, and her mother offered to take her out to dinner later on that week. That was today, and Amy felt like doing anything but. She just wanted to take a long hot bath and slip into something comfortable and relax, it had been a hard day at work. Amy parked her car in the garage, took her belongings out of the trunk, and headed for the door. She picked up the mail on the way in, unlocked the door and entered her small but comfortable home shared with two other ladies whom she had become fast friends with soon after moving in. Amy sorted through the mail, taking what was hers and dropped the rest on the table beside the door and made her way towards her room. Her roommates were sitting in the living room seemingly working over dinner; she nodded a hello when they looked up from their work. Amy was exhausted, work had gone an hour later than it normally would have and she had had an argument with her boss. Amy fell down onto her bed sighing and slipped her shoes off wanting to relax for a moment until it was time to get ready for dinner. She was mere moments from slipping into a deep sleep when the phone startled her awake. Growling under her breath she picked the phone up and pushed the talk button. “Hello.” “Amy, dear, how are you?” “Hi mom, I’m tired. Was just relaxing a bit before I have to get ready.” “Oh, well dear. If you’re too tired we can always reschedule.” “No mom, it’s okay.” “Great, there’s someone I want you to meet anyway.” “Huh? Meet?” “Yes, you shall see honey.” “Okay mom.” “Alright Amy I’ll see you later.” “Yea, see you then.” Amy shut the phone off, groaned, turned over and checked the clock, quarter past six. She stood up grabbed a towel and went to shower.
Amy stepped out of the shower and into the steam that had collected in the small bathroom, wrapped a towel around herself and grabbed the hair dryer from under the sink. Back in her room she plugged the dryer in and found a straightened from her dresser drawer and plugged it in as well. She was meeting someone apparently special tonight so she had better look nice. She pulled simple black dress pants and a white button down shirt out of her closet and laid them on the bed, searched through her shoes, and decided she wasn’t going to wear any more high heels today, her feet were already killing her, so she picked out her black and white converses, they would match anyway. She sat on her bed and dried her hair then straightened it, dressed and finished with several minutes to spare. She picked up her mail, sorted through it, and noticed a suspicious envelope. She started to open it but decided against it, she would rather deal with whatever it was later. She picked her keys up on the table and left her room. “Ladies, I’m out for a dinner with my mom, I’ll be out late, feel free to lock up. Goodnight.” She said and smiled at her friends then exited her home.
Part 5 – Dinner with Mom
Amy arrived at the restaurant, parked her car, and stood out front awaiting her mother and the mystery guest. They were running a bit late apparently, but it was a nice evening so she didn’t mind waiting. Her mind went over things from work, the fight, an account she was working on and then to the envelope, she should have brought it with her, she was very curious who it was from as there was no return address and there were hearts on the envelope.
