Pairing: Kaoru x Kyo
Summary: Kaoru finds out that to be important to someone else, you really don’t need to be something you are not. The things you do and say, no matter how small or insignificant, go a thousand miles, whether you know it or not – you certainly don’t need any super powers!

With great powers come great responsibilities.
How true. Kaoru stalked past the Spider-man posters which were notoriously pinned up everywhere in that area. It wasn’t as if he hadn’t enough of it, leading a band just wasn’t really great. In fact it was taxing. Your band members had minds of their own. They weren’t dolls and they certainly wouldn’t listen to you or do everything you said. They weren’t like the anime characters that followed script. They were individuals.
He heaved a sigh.
The fact that they were super attractive didn’t help much either. One smile was enough to melt you to jelly.
And they knew that, using it to their full advantage.
The fearsome band leader gritted his teeth.
But today’s going to be different! He was going to be the super harsh band leader everyone would fear! He would strike terror into the hearts of wayward band mates! He would lessen the breaks! He would—
“HI KAOKAO!!!”
For the one time in history the blond monster wasn’t asleep. And the… overalls he wore shouted adorability. He bounded up to his leader in those ridiculously tall platforms and grinned evilly. “You’re late.”
“What…” he checked his watch. “No… I’m not!”
“Well, you DID tell us to come earlier today… or did you forget?”
“Holy shi—“
“You mean you did?” Hell, even Kyo was shocked. As quick as lightning his expression switched from that of shock to glee. “I’M GONNA TELL THE GUYS!!!” he roared, scuttling away as fast as his platforms would allow him. He flung the swinging doors open and hurtled towards a few women, who screamed and parted as he ran through. Kaoru watched the blond figure disappear from sight in horror.
WHY!! Why did he forget? It was unlike him! It was preposterous! The Kaokao… err, Kaoru was never late! For the first time in months, Kaoru felt like pulling every strand of pink hair on his head out on his own account.
He walked towards the recording room, ready to retaliate to any insult that might be flung his way. Be brave, Kaoru! Don’t show the guys how nervous you are!
Taking a deep breath, he opened the door.
The guys looked bored, and Kyo was lounging lazily on the couch. He blinked.
“Good morning.”
“I see the jam hit you too,” Toshiya said sympathetically. Kaoru narrowed his eyes. Was that an insult… or was that genuine? He couldn’t tell.
“Uh… yeah, I guess…” he mumbled, getting to position. “Now everyone, we’re a little behind schedule as you can see. Fortunately we’ve got new lyrics to work on giving tune to…” Even as he spoke, he felt unfocussed. The rest didn’t seem to know that he’d forgotten, instead blaming it on the jam that hit the streets that morning. It was evident that the blond hadn’t told the others about it.
Kyo walked to the microphone stand and shouted at everyone to begin.
Or maybe he already did. Maybe the others just didn’t want to antagonize their fearsome, awe-inspiring leader. That’s right, they owed it to Kaoru. He owned.
Kaoru pushed his pink locks behind his ear and looked up towards the microphone stand. Their … scary vocalist was screaming out random lines with ridiculous tunes from Barney the Purple Dinosaur and Doraemon, obviously having a hell of a time enjoying himself. That smile on his face… the way his spiky, yet flowing hair rippled and moved as he did… his everything, it made Kaoru feel less tense, forgetting for a little while what little secret Kyo might have leaked out to the guys that morning. He smiled a small smile, looking dreamy.
Before he saw a hand wave in his face.
“Earth calling super leader! Hello! Hello!” the redhead leaned in closer to his leader till their noses were almost touching. Then he blew into Kaoru’s face.
Who retaliated by delivering a savage punch into Die’s face.
“Ah, lost in dreams, are you?” the redhead grinned sheepishly, brushing his stinging cheek.
“For a guy who doesn’t have very much of an ass, you sure are a large one,” Kaoru said dryly, getting up and into position. It was a signal for everyone to sober up and start working. The boys took the hint, and soon everyone was engrossed with the less trivial pursuits in life.
In the midst of his singing, he heard his own mind speak. He didn’t like what had just transpired… well; at least he felt that he didn’t like it, though he didn’t exactly know why. It was a little confusing; they were his band mates, and they often flirted, on-stage or off. It had never seemed to bother him before.
But seeing Kaoru and Die almost kissing made his blood boil.
He gripped the mic harder, trying his best to focus. He couldn’t fail his band mates now… he couldn’t fail their leader now.
He couldn’t fail his leader now.
His mind went back a little to the incident that morning. Actually he was worried that Kaoru was late… so that explained why he was outside, and not napping as he usually would. His worry caused the sleep to flee away; panic took over. When he saw the pink-headed leader of theirs arrived, he’d been very relieved and excited. And the events after that…
Kyo bit his lip at the instrumental bit. He hoped that he didn’t lose Kaoru’s confidence in him… he hadn’t told the guys like he playfully said he would. He’d… he’d never do that. He couldn’t possibly do that to someone as beautiful, graceful and deferential as Kaoru.
Kyo missed his part.
The boys stopped playing immediately at their band leader’s flick of wrist. He rubbed his temples. “Kyo… it’s not the first time this has happened, but you do know that we’re rushing for the deadline here, don’t you?”
“Yeah… sorry Kaokao,” he mumbled, mentally kicking himself.
“Keep them and focus now. You can apologize later,” he said coldly. The boys stared at each other, unable to help Kyo from their leader’s icy wrath. Kaoru was nice, but when it came to professionalism there was more to it than merely doing well. It was doing your best. They all knew that by heart.
Kyo nodded and looked sorry. Seeing that, Kaoru felt his anger melt away… he offered the vocalist a small smile and patted his shoulder before asking them to start over. Once again the other three stared at each other, lost for words… most of all Kyo, who was lost in wonder. But as his lines came on, he forgot himself and that little moment, keeping it to savor later.
So much for the title of fear-inspiring leader Kaoru.
He knew the guys were staring at him behind his back as they were packing up and getting ready to leave. That little smile and pat was totally uncalled for. If he could, he would have kicked himself there and then.
Still… he didn’t regret it completely. He would have… done anything to make the blond feel better. He didn’t like to be the cause of their petit vocalist’s feeling dejected. Even if he could feel those chocolate eyes drinking in his soul behind his turned back, it was worth it. His conscience felt clean.
Kaoru was very logical and he understood his actions well. He was composed, and his mind held one of the greatest forms of comprehension. Yes, he knew that there was some kind of attraction he felt towards the vocalist. He could admit it, though even he didn’t know the exact reason why. Given, Kyo wasn’t exactly beautiful or good-looking compared to the others… but there was a burning fire somewhere and Kaoru felt pleasantly scorched each time he met that gaze. At certain angles where the light would shine down on their petite vocalist, Kaoru felt as though he was looking at a character that’d jumped out of a storybook fantasy. Of course, he wasn’t stupid enough to reveal all that in some interview, or worse, to the guys, who’d be scandalized and not shut up for a week.
Or worse, again, make fun of him and it’d spell doom. As if a million fan letters a day wasn’t enough to drive a guy peanuts.
“Um… Kaoru?”
“Yes?”
“I… um…” the blond shuffled uneasily. “Sorry about the glitch today. I promise never ever again to daydream, I swear, I don’t daydream. This will be the only time,” he ended it in a lame tone of voice.
“Don’t worry about it.”
“Are you pissed?”
Kaoru felt irritated. Couldn’t he just drop it? He’s been forgiven! On top of it all, Kaoru was feeling stressed. He didn’t need the pain of guilt right now. “No, I am not pissed,” he ground out. “Geez, why must you be such a neurotic?”
“I’m not,” Kyo replied, putting his hands on his hips thus making him look rather like a mother hen. “I was just worried that you were pissed.”
“Well, I’m not, okay?” Kaoru was beginning to feel a little insecure. He knew that he couldn’t contain all his feelings when met up with Kyo like this. But this wasn’t the time for confession or love stories… they were all set back, they needed to hurry on… he didn’t need any personal disputes right now, and most of all he didn’t need rejection. Yes, Kyo would reject him. And it would majorly suck. He had to push the blond away for now, even if it’d hurt him.
“Look, it’s over, so just let’s drop it and move on.” He folded his arms and leaned against the wall. “I’m not angry with you. But at the same time, I should like you to focus more on your job, and have your fun later during break. We’re band mates, Kyo. We don’t have to get ourselves personally involved with each other’s issues. Even if I hated you, we still have to work together.”
Kyo looked up. “Do you hate me?”
“No!” Kaoru threw his hands in the air. “But I do hate it when you’re acting like this. Don’t, Kyo, don’t. I’m going bonkers as it is now. I don’t want to deal with this now.”
Kyo turned around and fled.
Holy shit! He hadn’t meant to say that… well, more of he hadn’t voiced it out perfectly. He didn’t want to deal with heartbreak then. He had wanted to tell Kyo it was all okay and he would never, ever feel angry with him no matter what… he didn’t hate the way Kyo was acting at all. It made him feel wanted, because someone else wanted him to like them. And most of all that someone being that someone he liked back…
Kaoru closed his eyes and rubbed his throbbing forehead. Picking up his bag and guitar, he walked out of the room.
“Damn, that was twisted,” Die mused.
“Yeah.”
“I mean, does he really think he can mask it that well? What does he think we are, a buncha morons?”
“No, he thinks YOU are a moron. We’re not, thank you very much,” Shinya replied. “But in any case, I don’t think Kyo knows about this.”
“It’s just like a twist in a plot of some complex anime!” Toshiya exclaimed. The two others rolled their eyes. All a sudden he stood up on their precarious perch on their small unnoticed podium. “WE WILL HOOK EM UP!!”
“I don’t think it’s a good idea… we should let them be and discover it themselves…”
“Where’s the fun in that?” Die asked, stifling a yawn. “Come on, guys… we’re gonna make a superhero out of Kaoru yet.”
“YAAAAY!”
“Holy crap! Don’t jump so suddenly, Totchi!”
“Sorry— ahhh!”
So saying, they fell off their perch and landed on a heap on the floor.
“Oww…”

Sometimes the things you do affect others’ lives drastically.
It was a cold, miserable morning. It had been raining, and the sky was tinted gray. But no matter… soon the sun would shine again and everything would be as bright and cheerful as it always was.
Snerk.
Like everything would be well between him and Kyo again. Kaoru knew, in his hearts of hearts, that he would always remain afraid to tell the vocalist the truth. He feared for them both – their careers, if Kyo would accept it, and their hearts, if he wouldn’t. It would be very hard to work with someone who rejected you and then resorted to avoiding you.
He wasn’t sure if Kyo would accept him for who he is… Kaoru would have to change. Did he have to be gentler? More caring, less cold? Would he have to treat him differently from the others? He didn’t know.
The bleak sky gave way to a few stray rays of sunshine, warming him up as he walked into the building.
Kyo walked out of the apartment, heavy at feet. He hadn’t slept very well, thinking of what their band leader had said to him the day before.
‘We’re band mates, Kyo. We don’t have to get ourselves personally involved with each other’s issues. Even if I hated you, we still have to work together.’
Hate was such a strong word. He mused a little, thinking back of a small part of a movie where the main character had to lie to the girl he loved to protect her. He had had to say that he didn’t love her…
But Kaoru was not a superhero. He didn’t need to tell anyone he hated them, or didn’t love them. Even if Kaoru didn’t love him, he wouldn’t mind so long as he was in their band leader’s good books. Kyo didn’t want Kaoru to hate him… even if they could just be friends, it was enough…
‘I don’t want to deal with this now.’
Neither do I, he thought. I wish I didn’t feel so confused around you, Kaoru. You’re so special… even if you weren’t a superhero…
“HEY! Look out!”
“Wha—“
Kyo felt his body being lifted into the air as he was seized by some tall, sinister looking guy and a sack thrown over his head. He was shoved into a car where a few other people held him down, never uttering a single word. Kyo yelped when he felt the sharp prick of a needle being inserted into his arm, and a liquid being injected into his system. Slowly he felt his consciousness slipping away…
Kaoru was beginning to panic. Toshiya and Die were already here. Shinya had just called to inform them that he had accidentally left his drumsticks at home and would be arriving shortly. As for Kyo… he had called but no one had answered. And as it were, Kyo was nowhere to be seen in the room… or outside it for that matter.
“Maybe he’s sick,” Die offered, feeling sorry at seeing a pale Kaoru pacing around the room and chewing his nails to their quick.
“If he were he’d answer the phone.” He sat down on the couch, hard. “Maybe I was a little too harsh last night… I hope nothing happened to him.”
“Well, this is what happens when you treat us, your band mates, badly,” the redhead couldn’t resist a dig. Toshiya kicked him in the shin. “OWW!”
The bassist glared at him and rolled his eyes towards Kaoru to signal for an apology.
“Nah… I’m just joking… I’m sure he’s okay.”
“Yeah, he’s okay…”
Just the, the phone rang. Kaoru answered almost immediately, at approximately the second ring. A heavily guised, raspy voice was heard over the line. “Are you the manager of Dir en Grey?”
“No… no, I’m the leader… I’m Kaoru.”
“Whatever. Now listen up, I’ve got your precious little vocalist with me here. I would love lotsa cash with that.”
Kaoru paled out as the othwo two tried to listen to the conversation. Just then, Shinya walked in. He stared curiously at them. “What’s going on here?”
The other two shook their heads and pointed at Kaoru, equally bewildered.
“What… don’t hurt him!”
“I won’t, precious… I just want some cash. Or your little vocalist will be sorry he ever crossed our paths. My, my… isn’t he a pretty little thing, boys?” There was a snicker of other laughter behind the voice. Kaoru’s grip on the receiver tightened.
“Look… I’ll pay you any price… just let him go…” Unwanted images of what those crooks could be doing to Kyo invaded his mind; he shook his head to be rid of them as he spoke. Die, Shinya and Toshiya looked as confused as ever, whispering amongst themselves. It was clear now that they understood the message – some creeps had kidnapped their vocalist and demanded a ransom to be paid.
“Okay… we won’t be greedy… 10 000 yen.”
“Only 10 000?” Kaoru was shocked.
“What, you want a higher price?”
“No… no… how shall I get it to you?”
“Okay, now you listen up. You get the money, put it in a sack and you come to the park near the station at six. No police or Blondie gets it up his ass – I tell you, we know. We have friends who are corrupt officers and if they tell me you lodged some frickin’ report… oh man, you won’t wanna know what we’d do to him,” the voice said. Kaoru nodded, then realizing that they couldn’t possibly see him over the phone, agreed verbally.
“Yes… I’ll be there…”
“Don’t tell your cronies where we are either. Come alone.”
With that, the line went dead. Kaoru dropped the phone and hurriedly explained the situation to the guys… how he needed the money and how he would pay them back later… and how he couldn’t tell them where they were. The three nodded, looking worried. Handling him their cash, which just made ten yen extra, they sat back down. Kaoru rushed out of the room. He had only two more hours to get there.
“Oh my god…”
“I never knew this would happen,” Shinya breathed. Beside him, Toshiya was sobbing hysterically.
As the room sank into silence, punctuated by an occasional sob and sniffle, Yoshiki strode in.
“Good morning angels…!!!... eh?”
It was almost eight, and still there was no sign of the men. The sun was on its way to sinking below the horizon, the last of the birds werelingling. The sky was painted a bright vanilla yellow, and the clouds looked like rolling waves in the summery air. Kaoru looked around, scanning the area for any familiar face. Suddenly he felt a tap on his shoulder. A tall young man, muscular and well-toned, nodded silently at him. His face was partially wrapped up in a scarf and his eyes shaded by dark glasses. His hair hidden under a cap, the man held out a gloved hand.
Kaoru handed him the bag, which the man opened to check. He nodded once more and then motioned Kaoru to come with him.
The guitarist fell in step with him, hoping that what he would discover was a lively Kyo.
To his horror, the vocalist was wrapped up in some cloth and was as still as a limp doll. A trickle of red painted his lips.
“Kyo!”
No answer.
“Damn you! I thought I told you not to hurt him!”
The masked man shook his head slowly. Worry and anger consuming him, Kaoru lashed out to attack the man who had led him there. But the man was ready. With an easy flick of his wrist, he threw Kaoru over, obviously skilled in the art of self-defense. He was graceful and sidestepped a few more oncoming attacks before deciding it was getting a little annoying.
The man shoved the pink-haired man onto where the blond lay, hard. He took the opportunity to run off. Kaoru stood up and screamed obscenities at the departing figure, tears pouring down his cheeks. He crawled towards where the prone vocalist lay, pulling him up to inspect him. To his relief, the blond was breathing. He pushed the unruly blond locks off his face and wiped the red stained lips with his finger. Kaoru planted his lips against the vocalist’s forehead, feeling it warm up in his touch…
“Kao… ru?”
“Kyo!”
He sat up, wiping his mouth. “Must’ve bit my lip while struggling…”
“I thought they hit you!”
“Nah… there wasn’t much. I was out the moment they got hold of me… speaking of which, what happened? I figured that this was some kidnap case… did Yoshiki tell anyone else?”
“Yoshiki wasn’t involved,” Kaoru smiled weakly. “I collected the money and I got here… I’m glad you’re okay.”
“I’ll… you mean you used your money?”
“Yes,” Kaoru nodded tiredly.
“I’ll pay you back,” Kyo said, resting his head against his leader’s arm.
“No, I don’t want you to… I guess this serves as my apology to you… those harsh words that I never in my life could mean,” he said. “It’s my apology to all of us, for complicating things because I just am not brave enough… not brave enough to tell you the truth.
The truth of my loving you, wanting to be with you, and never being able to flare up at you no matter what. I was afraid… afraid that you wouldn’t accept me. In my logical state of mind I failed to see what you really meant to me. Till today, when you were in danger. When I yelled at you, I wasn’t angry with you, I was angry at myself. I’m sorry. I’m sorry for not being able to the strong Kaoru all of you, especially you, wanted me to be. I even got my ass kicked today… and let this happen to you.”
A tear trickled down his cheek for one last time.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t be your hero... as much as I would like to be.”
That tear never made it to the ground. The blond kissed it away tenderly, much to Kaoru’s surprise. “That’s okay. I never found the guts to tell you I liked you either… and I made it hard by pushing you. So I guess that evens us out.”
They stood up, and walked to the swings where they rested for a while, watching the clouds sail by the late evening sky.
“Can I tell you a secret, Kaokao?”
At a distance, the man removed his scarf and glasses and cap and panted heavily. He looked at the scarf and bit his bottom lip. “Stupid smelly thing. Why couldn’t I use my own anyway?”
“Because you’d stand out,” the other man laughed.
“I’d have looked a lot cooler, though.” The young man folded his arms, his dorky grin betraying his tone of voice. “Here you are, I think you should be returning this to them as a raise.”
“Ah… thank you, Gackt-sama. I think it’d be great for me to repay you with some tea next time we meet again.”
“You’re welcome, Yoshiki-san. And don’t worry about the tea. It’s been my pleasure to help you… and a young couple so in love.” He bowed and left, strolling into the sunset, a solitary figure who was greeted by another figure in dreadlocks, with a soft, smiling face to counter the intimidating aura it was meant to give. Yoshiki bowed back, and walked away.
“I think I liked you long before, but I wasn’t sure… I wish I didn’t feel so confused around you, Kaoru. You’re so special… even if wer weren’t a superhero…” he leaned in to the next swing which was occupied by the band leader.
“Though… you already are a superhero in my heart.”
And Kaoru smiled. The sky was turning a shade of violet, and the stars were appearing to dot the twilight horizon.
We sometimes tend to forget that in life, we don’t need super powers to be a hero in somebody else’s eyes. The little things we do and say go a long, long way – we don’t even realize them sometimes, the way they affect the people we love most in the world. A kind word could lift a depressed spirit, and a hug could bring back a smile like magic. It’s the love and care that you show, that could make a friendship or love blossom, and make the people who love you, and whom you love, smile for real, and feel like they’ve been rescued.
So show your love, and be a superhero today.
