“What if nobody buys me, Leonie? Can you imagine the embarrassment?” Darren cringed into the mirror, inspecting his once again dyed locks. “Do you think I should switch shirts?”
“Darren you look fine! And of course you’ll get a bid. Who wouldn’t buy you?”
Darren grimaced into the mirror at his reflection. He should never have agreed to do this charity slave auction in the first place. He could just imagine the laughter if he didn’t get a single bid. “Leonie, promise me you’ll put an opening bid in, please!”
“Sure okay, $20?”
“I was thinking about $1,000? Just to start off with you know.” He turned and looked at her hopefully. Seeing her raised eyebrow and pursed lips he faked a giggle “Kidding?”
“Come on up, you’re on in about ten minutes.” She gripped his shoulders and tried to ease him out of his chair but he didn’t budge.
“Leonie! I’m not finished!”
“Tough, up!” He allowed himself to be dragged and taken into the main hallway where teams of celebrities were bidding or waiting to be bidded on. As they entered Justin Timberlake had just been sold to Cameron Diaz for $2,000. Darren nudged Leonie and gestured at the two with his head. “See…”
“Darren, it’s $20 or nothing!”
“Well maybe I could drop out and just give a donation or some…” Seeing Leonie’s face he rose both hands in surrender “Okay, okay I’ll do it!”
While waiting for his turn he took in the faces of the crowd. It was a good turn out and a healthy mix of A List celebrities as well as the usual liggers. He spotted Jude Law Hmm wonder if he’s for sale… he thought grinning devilishly. His thoughts were interrupted when he noticed a dark figure gazing in his direction. Recognition was impossible as their face was hooded by a dark Panama hat and their body covered by a black overcoat. They even wore black gloves, who came dressed to a party like that?
“Darren! You’re up! Go, go!” Leonie pushed at his back and he felt his way up onto to the stage. Shit! he thought as he stared out at the sea of faces. He gave a little wriggle of his hips in an attempt at bravado and stared at the auctioneer. Hurry up!
“Now here we have the delectable Darren Hayes ex lead singer of Savage Garden and solo singer. What can I get for him tonight ladies?”
“$20!” piped up Leonie.
“$25!” cried a girl from Sugarbabes.
The voices came thick and fast until the rate was at $1,200. Darren was feeling a little bit smug with himself at the hefty price. Come on, Jude! You know you want to buy me!
“$1,0000.” The dark figure spoke, their voice husky and low. Everyone spun round to see the figure and then began speaking in hushed voices wondering who it could be.
“A million, any advances on a million?” The auctioneer inquired.
“Oh please someone, don’t let me have just been bought by Dr Evil…” Darren whispered to himself.
“Then sold to the gentlemen in black!”
Darren gave the crowd a sickly smind mnd made his way down off the podium. The hooded man was gone. Yes! Maybe he just liked giving money away or something. He didn’t want to use Darren’s skin to make a suit afterall.
Lenoie approached excitedly “Here!” she cried handing over a piece of paper. “Your millionaire owner just gave me this.”
"Meet me outside in ten minutes. The black limousine."
“Leonie! I’ve just been sold to Ted Bundy. What’re you getting so excited about!”
“Oh Darren don’t be so dramatic! Yoow eow everybody here has had mass security checks done on them. He’s probably just an eccentric dresser.”
“Maybe he wants to cut me up and put me in his dresser!” Darren stopped a passing waiter and grabbed a wine. He didn’t drink but he needed it if he was going to get into that limousine.
The next ten minutes he spent downing more and more wine, not a drinker it quickly took effect. With a deep breath he tapped Leonie to signal that he was on his way out.
“Good luck!” She cried as he made his way to the door.
The cool brisk air hit him immediately as he left the doorway, a welcome relief from the heated throng inside. He closed his eyes and felt as if his whole body was spinning. Opening them he saw he was looking down at his own reflection. The black limousine had arrived.
The door swung open and Darren took a deep breath as he entered. Last taste of freedom he fleetingly thought.
“Hello.” He greeted his passenger, the dark hooded man. The man didn’t respond.
Darren thought quickly of a subject to break the nice. Nice gloves, I believe the Boston strangler had a pair just like those-no, no that wouldn’t do “Erm…that was a good thing you did. Donating all that money I mean.”
“Yeah….” voi voice said distractedly, staring out the window.
“Yes, it was. I’m glad that you spent so much on me…I mean towards the charity.” The stranger coolly appraised him for a second before looking back out the window. Great, wonderful, fantastic. This is going splendid! “So is there anything you require of your slave at the moment?”
“Not yet, but there will be a great many things I require later.” He glanced quickly at Darren and back out the window.
Oh no, he’s going to ask me to put the lotion in the basket! Darren’s brain screamed as the car pulled to a stop alongside a hotel.
“We’re here.” the stranger informed him.
A hotel room? Right that was it he was keying 9,1 and at the first sign of anything weird he was hitting the other 1. He eased his cell phone out of his back pocket in what he hoped was a nonchalant manner.
“Follow me.” The stranger asked and walked straight to the elevator. Darren followed slowly behind trying to make himself noticeable to the people around him. That way it would be easier for when the police reconstructed the crime scene. Perhaps he should skip-people always remembered grown men who skipped. He entered the elevator and winced as the doors grounded shut.
The man beside him removed his hat and grinned at Darren.
“Daniel!”
“Hello Darren. Miss me?” His green eyes twinkled with good humour.
“Jesus! I thought you were Hannibal Lector or something.” He grabbed his friend into a bear hug. “I’m so glad to see you!”
“Do you think Leonie would let you walk off with a would-be killer, Darren!” Daniel laughed.
“She knew?” He gasped.
“Yeah, she helped me arrange it.” He smiled shyly. “I wanted to surprise you.”
“You did! This explains why she was so adamant I do it!” He exclaimed as the doors opened on Daniel’s floor. “But you didn’t need to pay a million to see me, Daniel.”
“I know, but I wanted to be unpredictable. A bit more exciting. A bit more like you.” He shot Darren a look that he couldn’t read.
“Like me? But Daniel you’re great as you are. I love you.” Daniel’s head snapped up and he stared deeply into Darren’s eyes.
“I love you too.” Daniel replied in an almost solemn tone.
“Well great!” Darren stated oblivious to the fire in Daniel’s eyes. “What’s your first task you wish me to perform, Master” He asked as they entered the room.
“First I want you to listen. Without saying a word. Understood.”
“Yes I mean…” He nodded and sat on the bed looking up at Daniel with wondering eyes.
“I just said I love you. I mean it, Darren. Not just as a friend, brother or colleague but love you.” Darren gasped but Daniel placed a finger to his lips. “Slave? Shush. I’ve been in love with you since I can remember. I’ve tried so tim times to tell you but there were always…distractions. And then the band split I…” He ran his hands through his hair in frustration. “I’m doing this all wrong, it was so great in my head.”
Darren felt tears well up in his eyes. Daniel? His best friend of all these years loved him? He’d never even dreamed about it. No, that was a lie. Always in the back of his mind he'd dreamed it-but he never thought Daniel might reciprocate those feelings! He’d find him self gazing at Daniel during recording or when they talked and always his heart would thump with a frenzied excitement at just been in the same room with him. But always he had kept that emotion pushed down into his core, ignored and hopefully one day forgotten. But the heart never forgets.
“Darren? You can speak. You master allows it.” Daniel gave a sad smile and glanced down.
Rising Darren tipped his finger under Daniel’s chin so their eyes met. “Daniel? I’ve always been your slave.”
A light seemed to explode in Daniel’s eyes at the worlds he pulled Darren to him in an excited hug. Eyes never leaving the other they leaned in for a kiss. Their first, and hopefully one of many.
“Darren?” Daniel gasped as they broke apart. “Can I loan a million off you?”
Darren smiled and pulled Daniel back onto the bed. “Oh yes, Master. Anything you wish.”
