Chapter One: Temperature-Rising
Paula glanced up from the papers in front of her, just in time to see Simon waltz into the room. She grinned inwardly, noting the sparkle in his eyes whenever someone offered him any acknowledgement what-so-ever. «Definitely a one-man show...» She thought to herself, a smirk forming on her lips as he offered her his famed charm, in wink form.
Simon took a seat beside the petite singer, casting her a side-glance. “Paula...”
She could feel the blush burn her skin, unwilling to admit the effect he had on her. Granted, she knew that a simple act such as saying her name with his delicious accent, would probably be able to get her off, but she would deny the strong hold he had on her heart until the last moment possible. She had always been rather independent in life, and save for a few marriage-driven mistakes, she was happy with the command she had on her heart, mind and body.
Until Simon.
Shaking her head, she silently berated herself for falling for such a man: a womanizer, an attention-seeking, mean-spirited pompous ass who only cared about himself. Such a man that she found herself loving more and more each day, knowing that in the deepest regions of his soul, he was an honest to good man, caring and sensitive. She ached to obtain his gold-lined heart, knowing that when he cared, he cared strongly. She knew certain sides of Simon: his loyalty, unique sense of humour, charisma, flirty disposition...she knew the list could go on. Her only problem remained: she wanted to learn more about this enigma of a man, she desired to find out what lay beneath his showmanship exterior, she wanted to indulge her senses and experience the ‘real’ Simon Cowell.
“Should I check your temperature - you’re awfully quiet.” Humour laced his thick accent, as he mockingly placed his hand on her forehead. “Ooh, definitely a scorcher. Better use the thermometer...” His jesting continued as he shook his index finger, a mimicked thermometer being his intent. “Just be glad this is an oral test.” His cheeky grin surfaced as his finger approached her mouth, knowing that she would bat his hand away at any moment. His gaze slightly faltered when no attempts were made to stop his advancing finger, and he swallowed hard, battling with common sense and pride; Simon Cowell was never one to back down, especially if teasing was involved. His finger reached her lips - his last hope for her to refuse his digit. Biting the tip of his tongue to stifle a moan, he none-the-less savoured the warmth of her mouth as his finger slipped past her lips. “Hot...” He muttered, sexual tension crackling between them. “Definitely have a fever...” Mumbles tripped off his tongue as he exhaled loudly, feeling her gently suck on his index finger as her tongue swirled the tip.
She didn’t know what possessed her to attempt such a bold move, but she had found herself drowning in the intensity of his darkened hues. All control left her body, save for the minute task of opening her mouth when his finger approached. She tasted him, and it sent shivers coursing through her body. She let his finger slip sensually out of her mouth, synchronicity timing perfectly with Randy’s entrance into the judge’s quarters.
“Yo, what up?” He greeted them with his regular exuberance, where English mingled with ‘words from the hood’ though it could do nothing but compliment his unique style.
“Not much, Jackson.” Simon replied, seemingly calm by what had just transpired. “Paula, how are things with you?” He glanced down at the list of candidates in front of him, pretending to be uninterested but secretly unable to meet her gaze. He was still confused by her actions and the more he thought about their recent moment, the more his southern regions began to stir. He pulled his chair in, hoping to hide his blatant arousal for his American Idol partner.
Simon's non-chalant demeanor irked Paula, and she merely huffed in response, getting up to walk around before filming began.
“Five minutes, Miss Abdul.”
She smiled her understanding to the stage-manager before strolling out of the room, intent on regaining her composure. She stepped into the bathroom, splashing cold water on her face to alleviate the heat that Simon had instilled in her. Placing each hand beside the sink, she leaned against the counter, pondering the many thoughts that Simon must have been thinking at the time. Was he still thinking about it as much as she was? Had he thought anything of it at all? Had it been welcomed? Had he been repulsed? Many thoughts crawled through her head, and she tried desperately to push them out of mind. Checking her watch, she walked purposely towards the judge’s room, not bothering to make eye-contact with the British man sitting beside her, despite having noticed his concerned gaze.
They waited for the first contestant, in an awkward silence. Randy glanced at the two judges, knowing something had definitely occurred during his absence, but not being able to decipher the exact details. He sighed silently, always feeling left-out when it came to the duo. At least when Ryan was around, he didn’t feel so alone, but when it was just the three of them, he always seemed to be on the outside looking in.
“You okay?” Simon asked, draping an arm on the back of her chair, allowing him access to her personal space.
His soothing voice pierced her meditative bubble, and she straightened up with tension, upon feeling his warm breath his her ear and neck. She hummed a positive response, thankful that the first contestant had entered the vicinity. “Hiya...Shelly Jeffries, right?” She greeted the young woman with an exaggerated jubilance, pointedly ignoring Simon’s concern.
Shelly smiled nervously, eyeing the three judges: Randy with a curious stare, Paula with a plastered on smile, and Simon, who’s attention was completely zoned-in on his partner. «Hoo-boy...» Shelly thought, her sentiments mirroring those of Nigel who was watching from the booth.
