Kelly rolled over and came face to face with a pair of huge brown eyes.
“Mornin’”
“Howdy” she whispered back with a smirk.
Kelly remembered last night. She probably shouldn’t have, but the former cocktail waitress had served enough drinks in her short lifetime to know how to handle her liquor. Her bed mate on the other hand had attended enough fraternity keggers as a Sigma Sigma Sigma sister to have acquired the same skills.
Last night couldn’t and wouldn’t be chalked up to a drunken mistake. They both knew that without some drawn out discussion.
It was strange how easily they had connected. Or rather not so strange, after all, they were both in their early 20s, southern born and bred, and proudly called themselves the American Idols.
When BMG held their summer luncheon at Clive Davis’ estate Kelly thought she’d be bored out of her mind, as she usually was at these types of events. She hoped to make a quick obligatory appearance and then leave in time to play Scrabble with her brother, Jason.
Carrie on the other hand, was scared and excited about the late afternoon party. She hadn’t really attended one of these types of events since she’d been signed and this was her first chance to make an impression on her label mates.
Instead she discovered that every Joe there was only out to shmooze her. She never could stand fake people, and LA was oozing with them, especially since her win. After being whirlwinded through the garden of Clive’s home, she needed a moment to breathe. She notified her incessant security team that she was headed for the restroom, and luckily they bought it.
Carrie winded through the mansion marveling at how expensive everything looked. She wandered until she found what looked like Clive’s study. The man went to Harvard and his library was no joke, books lined the walls and ladders accompanied each case that rose to the ceiling. She walked toward the back of the large room and saw a chair facing out to the window.
She walked around to sit in it and let out a shriek when she sat on its inhabitant.
“What the hell!” Carrie exclaimed.
“Well, hello to you too.” Kelly Clarkson answered looking up at her.
“Ohmahgawd.” Carrie spit out dumbfounded to have found herself sitting in Kelly freakin Clarkson’s lap.
“You know, as big as this house is you’d think there’d be more than one chair in the study, huh?” asked Kelly.
“Yeah, really. Oh, I’m Carrie by the way.” She explained extending her hand.
Kelly shook her hand and responded “I know, I’ve been asked about you in about 50 interviews this month. I’m happy you won. Wish I could have seen the show more, but I’m touring. I’m kind of jealous, I wanted to put out a country album one day.”
“Well, if I know one thing about you it’s that if you really want to, you will.” Carrie said matter of factly.
“Stop, you’ll make me blush.” Kelly replied wryly.
Carrie laughed and suddenly realized she was sitting on poor petite Kelly and jumped out of the chair exclaiming “Oh my god, I’m sorry. I was probably crushing you!”
“Not at all, girl! I’m just glad you stumbled in here and not one of those mind numbing people out there.” Kelly huffed.
“Oh, I thought it was just me! Half of the people out there seem like robots. Do people ever get real?” Carrie asked.
“Only if they’re from the South, and that’s if they haven’t been brain washed. Are you still friends with people from back home, because that’s the only thing that’ll keep you grounded. Trust me.”
Carrie lit up. “Oh yeah, I’m lucky. I have 22 sisters back home that’ll tell me like it is.”
“Damn! Twenty-two sisters? Your parents have been busy!”
“Ew, gross! I meant my sorority sisters. I have 20 there and my two older sisters.”
“Nice, I have a big family too. Although, we’re scattered all over the country. I really miss them.”
“That’s one thing I’ve noticed about this whole American Idol thing. It’s kinda lonely.” Carrie said plaintively. “Don’t get me wrong, it’s amazing, I’m living in a dream world, but it’s a lot different than I thought it’d be.”
“Tell me about it. Actually, let me tell you about it, I’m the vet here. Look, do you want to get out of here? My rent house is like 10 minutes from here. Clive likes to keep his investments close to the vest if you know what I mean.” Kelly explained.
“I’d love to, believe me, but my security team would have a fit.”
“Oh, forget about them! You just tell them your parents are in town and you want to take them out in private. I do it all the time when I want to be left alone. My parents are the only ones they never run through a million security checks.”
Carrie was amazed. “I never thought about that, but it’s true. Give me a sec.” She said pulling out her cell. “Hey, Manny? I’m going to go take my parents out to dinner. I’ll probably stay at their hotel room tonight. They can drive me back tomorrow morning. You have a good night too, Manny!”
“He took that hook, line, and sinker!” Carrie said pumping her fist in the air in victory.
“Come on, I’ll drive.” She said getting up. They walked into the foyer and just as valet pulled up an assistant handed each girl a gift bag.
Kelly grinned. “I’ll never understand why they give all us rich folk this free crap, but I sure as hell ain’t gonna complain.”
As they walked into the living room Kelly ran into Jason who had his keys in his hand. “Where ya going?” Kelly questioned.
”Hot date. Foreign concept, huh.” He teased. Kelly winced, he knew she was still raw from her break up with David.
“Yeah, yeah. I’m a loser. Thanks for the reminder, bro.”
“Hey, I’m probably not coming back tonight, so do me a favor and if Kim calls tell her I’m out of town on business.”
“Uh, she might question that considering your boss, uh moi, will be the one answering the phone.”
“Thanks, you’re a doll.”
“And you’re a player.” Kelly said with a smile ushering him out the door.
She walked into the kitchen mumbling something and turned to ask Carrie if she’d like a glass of red wine. Carrie answered “Sure” to be polite.
Kelly walked over and plopped down onto the plush couch taking a gulp out of her wine glass. “Gawd, sometimes he just doesn’t think! Sorry, it’s just that I’m kind of getting over a break up and he just doesn’t even consider how flaunting his love life would hurt just a little.”
Carrie nodded sitting at the other end of the sofa. “Tell me about it. My sisters are always calling me to tell me how my ex was talking to so and so and I’m just like ‘God, I don’t want to hear that stuff!’”
“Exactly! I mean, my ex got married. Do I want to hear that his wife was shopping for bedding at Bed, Bath and Beyond? No!” Kelly yelled taking another big gulp.
Carrie smiled taking a sip of wine, “And people think because we’re famous we don’t have problems.”
“Please, as long as men exist there are going to be problems, and plenty of ‘em.” Kelly said.
“I never read about you having a boyfriend. Not to sound stalkery, but I have followed your career.”
“Oh, well, this all happened within the last like 4 months.”
Carrie thought for a moment. “Oh, I’ve been in a cocoon for about 9 months. But jeez, he got married within 4 months of dating?”
“Thanks for reminding me of how completely devastating that is.” Kelly giggled. Suddenly, her face broke and she started to cry.
“Oh my god! I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to drag all of this stuff up.” Carrie said starting to panic.
She scooted closer to Kelly stroking her shoulder soothingly. “Is there anything I can do?” she asked so genuinely Kelly had to smile.
“Unless you can erase David from my memory, I’m afraid not.”
“Well…” she thought for a moment. Carrie grabbed her purse from the foot of the sofa and took Kelly by the hand. “Where’s your room?”
“Upstairs, why?” Kelly asked slightly confused.
“Come on, I’ll show you how to get rid of him.”
Once they reached Kelly’s room, Carrie had to take a moment to digest what Kelly’s room looked like. She expected something sweeter. This room was straight out of the sexiest Victoria Secret catalogue spread. Deep burgundy silk sheets covered the bed and lace trimmed the canopy.
“Where’s your box?” Carrie asked.
“What box?!” Kelly asked genuinely confused.
“The box where you keep all of the stuff that reminds you of David. Everything he ever gave you, CDs, anything.” She explained.
“Oh god, how’d you know?” Kelly chuckled wiping a tear from the corner of her eye.
“When I broke up with Drake, my sisters had me burn my box and it really helped the grieving process. This is an emergency, so we’ll have to use pictures. Do you have a picture of him?” Carrie asked pulling her wallet from her purse and showing Kelly a photo of Drake.
Kelly opened the drawer of her dresser and grabbed a photo of her and David in the studio. She saw the box of matches by her candles and the trash can under her desk.
The two girls sat on the bed and simultaneously lit the photographs on fire. They watched the ashes fall into the basket. Carrie noticed Kelly wasn’t making any attempt at blowing out her flame, so she quickly blew on her picture of Drake and tossed it into the trash and then blew out Kelly’s just as she let out a yelp when the flame hit her fingers.
“Wow, that was cathartic, and painful. Kind of like watching all of the moments I thought were good go up in flames.” Kelly ashamed to still be crying.
Carrie pulled her into a hug. “I totally get it, don’t worry. The night I broke up with Drake he had literally called me twenty minutes before show time to tell me he couldn’t call me his girlfriend anymore. He knew I had to go on, could have called any other day, but he didn’t. I’ll never forgive him for that.” Carrie said sniffling.
“Men are bastards.” Kelly muttered. “There’s no reason we should be crying. We are two cute, talented girls.” Kelly said starting to pull herself together once she saw Carrie was now crying pretty hard.
“Hey, come on, you are way too gorgeous to be crying over some jerk. I mean, what a moron to let you get away.” Kelly said pulling back to look into Carrie’s face.
Carrie couldn’t see too clearly through her tears, but she couldn’t stop herself from kissing Kelly on the mouth. It was supposed to be more of a thank you for being so kind, but she didn’t expect the warmth that went into the kiss. She leaned her head on Kelly’s shoulder for a second to compose herself but Kelly wrapped her hand around Carrie’s neck and pulled her back up.
Keeping hold of her neck with one hand, Kelly tilted Carrie’s chin up with the other. She kissed her again, this time enjoying the softness of her lips on her own.
