Schneider walked along the stream. He took great care not to fall in, as he kicked at loose pebbles, relishing the sound they made as they “click, click, CLUNK”-ed into the water below. He found a sturdy log and sat. He snuggled into his coat, trying to block off the cold.
He soaked in the sounds around him: the birds, the scampering of squirrels, the whisper of the softly flowing stream. He closed his eyes, letting the sounds lead him to a place deep inside himself, a peaceful place.
He felt soft kisses on his lips. He smiled broadly.
“Oh, Till! We can’t do this! Paulie will find out!” he joked.
“Hey!” Paul shrieked, sitting in Schneider’s lap.
“Oh, it’s YOU, Paulie!” Schneider covered his mouth with his hand, feigning embarrassment.
“Very funny, Chrissie.”
Paul lay his head on Schneider’s shoulder. Schneider certainly welcomed the extra warmth.
“You know, I came out here to be alone.” Schneider said with a soft smile.
“Ok, then, I’ll leave.” Paul said, rising slowly.
“Oh, no you don’t!” Schneider laughed, pulling Paul back down on to his lap, cuddling him.
“You came out here to think, didn’t you?” Paul asked.
“That was my eventual intention, yes.”
“Whatcha thinkin’ about?” Paul inquired, kissing Schneider’s cheek with flittering pecks.
“I know what THAT’S making me think about…” Schneider giggled.
“Pervert…No, honestly! What were you thinking about?”
“Us.”
“Good answer!” Paul replied with a grin.
“No, truthfully. I was thinking back to the good old days, before we were…well, OLD.”
Paul laughed and rose to his feet, balancing on the rocks and logs by the stream.
“I’m not old! I’m going to live forever!”
Schneider smiled softly. “Somehow, Paulie, I believe that.”
“But you know, Schneider…If I WERE to grow old, I think I’d like to do it with you. I’d enjoy that very much.”
Schneider wrapped his arms around Paul’s waist. Paul turned and kissed him deeply.
The sun began to set. Orange, gold, and rose rays pierced the treetops.
“Well then…” Paul said softly, with a deep, regretful sigh.
“Yes…It’s time.” Schneider said sadly.
They shared one last deep kiss.
“Same time next year?” Paul asked.
Schneider nodded solemnly.
“Happy birthday, Paul.”
Paul seemed to evaporate in his embrace, and as the sun set, he was gone.
Schneider cried softly as he went to leave, retrieving a bouquet of flowers he had laid on a rock. He laid them on a lonely grave that lay under a large, spreading oak tree, barren of leaves, and capped with fresh snow.
“Alles Gute zum Geburtstag*, Paulie…Ich liebe dich…”
He could swear he heard the night wind whisper
“Und ich liebe dich auch…für immer.”+
