“I refuse to go.” Flake declared, sitting on the bed, arms folded across his chest.
“But you must!” Till commanded, closing the last of their suitcases.
“I LOATHE America…” Flake said with a pout.
“Oh, come on now…I’ll be there, it can’t be SO bad?”
“It’s America…it can be WORSE…”
“Flake…” Till sighed with a smile and a shake of his head, kissing Flake tenderly.
“All right, FINE, but I am going under duress.”
“You do EVERYTHING under duress…You joined the band under duress, made love with me the first time under duress…”
“No, that was under the influence of drugs.”
Till smiled with fond recollection, “Oh, ja…”
They left for the airport and flew the nearly 19 hours to Los Angeles, California where the US leg of their tour was to kick off. They found their hotel room and flopped, fully clothed, onto their bed and fell fast asleep.
They awoke from their nap as the sun was going down.
“Flake, let’s go out…It’s been so long.”
“You just want a beer.”
“Ja, that too.” Till replied with a chuckle.
Flake laughed and they changed clothes, and walked the street in front of their hotel. They held hands as they entered the first bar they came upon.
Till drank a pint of Guinness as Flake sipped a club soda with lemon. They chattered away in German, completely unintelligible to the bar’s other clientele.
While they enjoyed each other’s company, a group of young men were driving about the streets with evil intention…
**************************************
The youngest of them sat in the front passenger seat, wringing his hands nervously.
“Will you chill the fuck out?!” the driver hissed.
“Sorry…” the young man replied meekly.
“All you gotta do is aim and shoot, and you’re in. It’s just like playing a fucking video game.”
The young man scratched a space between two of his long braids.
“Ok, I can’t choose. You pick someone.”
One of the men from the back seat pointed out the window, “How about one of those fags over there? The ugly one with the glasses.”
He drew his finger cruelly across his throat.
“Take him out.”
***************************************
Till and Flake had drank their fill, and decided to explore the area a bit more before returning to the hotel. All at once a feeling of foreboding clawed at Till’s gut.
“Flake, wait, let’s go back.”
“Not yet, I want to look over here a bit first.”
“Flake, PLEASE, let’s go!”
“Till, what is wrong with you?”
Suddenly a black car with equally dark windows pulled up slowly. The passenger side window rolled down a crack.
“FLAKE!!!”
Flake turned and faced the vehicle…
POP! POP! POP!
Till ran as fast as his legs could carry him, as the car sped away.
“Shit! Flake!”
Flake fell backward, gunshots in his shoulder, chest, and between his eyes, his broken glasses falling to the concrete sidewalk below. Till fell to his knees by his side.
“Flake, speak to me, PLEASE!”
Flake gripped Till’s arm.
Till screamed in terror, “Help! For fuck’s sake, somebody HELP!”
A police car pulled up beside them, as Flake’s grip on Till loosened, and his arm fell away.
“Flake, DON’T!”
“I love you…” were the last words to pass Flake’s lips, now turning blue.
Till held Flake to his chest and wept bitterly.
*****************************
Till couldn’t tell the others. How would he even begin? After what felt like a lifetime of questioning at the police station, he returned to the hotel.
He picked Flake’s shirt up off the floor, and held it to his face, breathing Flake’s scent deep into his nostrils. His bitter tears flowed freely as he packed his suitcase and left, going to the one place he knew he could clear his head.
Till took a taxi to the nearest stretch of beach he could find. He fumbled in his suitcase for his bottle of vodka, and chugged it down, hoping to drown the agony inside of him. He sat on the moist, soft sand, gazing across the ocean waves, his memory cast back to the night his life was forever changed…
*********************************
Till sat at his desk, scribbling in his notebook.
“Nein! God, that’s utter shit!” he growled, tossing idea number umpteen thousand into the trash.
Flake stood in the doorway, arms folded across his chest. Till flopped his head down on the desk in unbearable frustration.
“Writer’s block?” Flake queried.
Till jumped, not aware that he wasn’t alone.
“Oh, Flake! Ja…I have this phrase in my head, and I’m trying to write a song around it, but nothing works.”
“What’s the phrase?”
“Wilder Wein.”
“Hmm…”
Flake reached down and picked up a wad of paper from the floor. He unfolded it, and began to read.
“What’s wrong with this one?”
“King? Castle? It’s drivel!”
“Sing it to me.”
“It’s RUBBISH, Flake…”
Flake shoved the paper into Till’s chest…
“I’ll be the judge of that, now SING!”
Flake pulled up a chair beside him.
Till rolled his eyes, but obeyed, and began to sing. First, half-heartedly, but as he went on, with more and more feeling as the song seemed to overtake him.
When he sang the final refrain, he realized Flake was holding his hand.
“It’s beautiful, Till…” he whispered, pulling Till into a passionate kiss. Till returned the kiss eagerly, fingers tangling into Flake’s long, soft, blonde hair.
They kissed for what seemed like a sweet eternity, tongues and lips expressing everything. Flake pulled his lips away, placing soft kisses along Till’s strong jaw line and neck. Flake reveled in the sweet sensation of Till’s quickening pulse beneath his lips.
Flake’s long, elegant fingers undid the buttons on Till’s shirt, sliding it off, and capturing Till’s left nipple gently between his teeth. Till called out, as he caressed Flake’s hair. Flake tugged gently, and Till hissed from the heady mix of pleasure and pain.
Flake slid his hands down until they rested on Till’s knees. He forced them apart, then slowly slid down Till’s zipper, his emerald green eyes seeming to bore their way straight into Till’s soul as his gaze met Till’s. He pulled Till’s pleading erection free from his pants, and began to suck him forcefully.
Till’s hips thrust upwards, meeting Flake’s mouth with its every downward motion. Till shuddered and moaned, losing himself in blissful rapture. Till pushed Flake’s head gently away.
“No…not like this…This is beneath you…”
Till pulled him into a tender kiss.
Till carefully, and wordlessly freed Flake of his clothing, kissing his body randomly. Flake closed his eyes, relishing the sensation.
Till pulled Flake to where he faced him, Flake straddling him in the chair. Flake wriggled to where Till’s arousal was in just the right spot, and he slid down upon him.
Till cried out, drunken by the seemingly endless warmth and tightness of him. He held Flake’s hips steady, keeping at a slow pace. Their lips found one another, pressing and tangling, as they made love.
Till stroked Flake in time with the penetrations of himself into Flake. Before long, their voices joined in choral, climactic unison. Till held Flake to him tightly, their frantic heartbeats slowing in perfect time as their sweat bespeckled chests pressed firmly against one another.
Flake rose, and left momentarily, returning with a warm, wet washcloth, wiping himself and Till clean of the evidence of their passions.
Flake dressed and kissed Till passionately.
“I guess that’s the song…” Till mused with a coy smile.
“It is…” Flake replied, “Goodnight.”
Till and Flake never again spoke of that night, or repeated it. They both went on as if it had never happened. Then, one fateful day…
They were on a flight home from Mexico City. It was a typical journey, not at all like any other flight before it.
That is, until the plane began to crash…
An engine blew, and they plummeted toward the earth below. Flake grabbed Till’s hand, holding it with painful firmness. Till swallowed hard and spoke.
“Do you ever think about that night?”
“What?” Flake queried, quaking with fear.
“Do you?”
Flake’s eyes were pricked with tears, “Yes! Often…”
“I…love you, Flake.”
“Better late than never…” Flake quipped, in a futile attempt at humor.
Then, all at once, the plane righted itself.
Once they hand landed safely, Flake grabbed Till by the arm, pulling him aside from the others.
He pulled him into a desperate kiss…
“Ich liebe dich, Till…” he repeated over and over, between his frantic kisses.
From that day forward, Flake resided with Till, and they never again denied their feelings to one another.
******************************
Till laid back against the sand, his angry tears leaving large craters in the sand around his head.
All at once, sleep over took him, and a dream drifted into his mind…
Flake sat beside him on the beach. His mouth moved rapidly, but only every third word or so was audible.
“Eclipse…Wilder…Wein…Ariella…Home…again…I…love…you…”
Till awoke with a start, his heart slamming against his ribcage.
Till shook his head, and grabbed the handle of his suitcase, trudging angrily up the sandy beach. Just then, something caught his attention out of the corner of his eye. It was a sign, it read:
“Frau Ariella’s
All-Nite Psychic Readings”
Till shook his head, and intended to pass it by, but Flake’s words rang in his brain, “Ariella…”
He knocked on the door, softly, then more firmly as he received no answer.
“One minute! God damn!” a woman’s voice called from within, in badly broken English.
She appeared in the doorway.
“Ja? You need a reading?”
Till nodded, “Sprechen Sie deutsch?”
The woman’s angry face softened into a look of fondness, “Ja, Herr…?”
“Lindemann.”
She opened the door, inviting him in.
She showed him to a chair around a table, with the tools of the soothsayer spread out upon it.
“So, what brings you here this time of the night?” she questioned.
“I had…a dream…”
“Oh?” she brushed her long black back over her shoulders.
“Ja…”
“Well, tell me…”
Till recounted it, taking great care to describe it to the full.
“And this, Flake…He was a love of yours, wasn’t he? Your true love?”
Till’s eyes immediately flooded with tears.
“Ah, and he is newly dead…I am truly sorry.”
She offered Till a tissue, and he wiped his eyes, “What does it mean?”
The Frau smiled coyly, extending a hand. Till promptly filled it with cash.
She stuffed it into her bra.
“Ok…Your Flake is a clever, clever spirit.”
“I know…” Till replied mournfully.
“Oh, dear heart, you have no idea. He is telling you of Liebenacht.”
“Of WHAT?”
She extended her hand once more.
Till sighed frustratedly, and gave her more money.
“Danke. Liebenacht occurs only once every one thousand years. The moon is eclipsed twice, and lucky for you it happens tomorrow night. On this night, one can make an offering of love, and can revive a loved one that they’ve lost. But, there are certain rules that must be followed to the letter for it to work…”
“And they are? Wait…” Till sighed, giving her more money.
“I was just going to tell you, but danke.
First:
You must take your lover’s body, and place it no less, and I mean NO less than 100 meters from you. Any closer, and not only will he not be revived, but you will die. The resurrection energy is far too powerful.
Then, the offering you make must be something you that holds special meaning to you and your loved one…Apparently, Flake feels Wilder Wein is a fitting offering. You must begin the offering after the first eclipse, and it must be done before the start of the second. Follow all these rules correctly, and your true love will be returned to you.”
Till sat with a look of skeptical disdain.
“I know you don’t believe me, you are a stubborn skeptic, but obviously your Flake believes. And besides, what more do you have to lose?” she snipped, her eyes kohl rimmed, and sunken as they glared at him.
Till stood, tossing the remainder of his cash at her, and storming out.
“Fucking psychic, god damned fraud…Why did I even bother?” he hissed, noticing the sun was coming up. Had he really been in there so long? He grabbed his suitcase, called a cab from his mobile, and went looking for a nearby hotel. He soon found one, and paid using Flake’s card.
He laid in the bed, and soon, fell fast asleep.
Then, the dream came once more.
Flake walked along the shoreline. Till ran up to him, trying to embrace him, but his arms passed through him as if he were made of air. Flake sang in an ethereal voice, “Wilder Wein…vor deinem Schloss…Wilder Wein…” and he faced Till, his eyes cold and distant, “Ich bin bereit…”
Till sat up, and saw the sun was setting. He knew he had to hurry.
He took a cab to the morgue where Flake was being kept.
**************************************
Two men stood, both obviously distraught.
“God, could they give us any more impossible of a workload?” the first growled with a sigh.
“It’s not the coroner’s fault that plane crashed. Let’s just get this shit done, so we can go home.” replied the second.
“What about that one?” the first asked, indicating toward Flake.
“Put him in the cooler, we’ll get to him when we can. It’s not like we don’t know cause-of-death.” the second man responded with a morbid chuckle.
And with that, Flake’s body was slid into a drawer.
Till slipped into the morgue, sneaking about, trying to find where Flake was being kept. All at once, an idea came to him. Tears flooded his eyes as he entered the autopsy room.
The two men spun around in surprise. The first hissed, “Who the fuck are you?!”
“I’m here to identify a body.” Till responded coolly.
“And you are?” the second man questioned.
“His…brother.”
“And they asked you to identify his body at this time of night?” the second man continued.
“Ja, I just flew in from Germany. They contacted me yesterday.”
“OH! You’re with the gang shooting.”
Till’s gut clenched as the images of that day flooded his brain.
“Ja.”
The first man pulled out the drawer containing Flake’s body. Till sobbed immediately, as they pulled the sheet away from his face.
“So, I take it that it’s him?” the first man asked.
“Ja…Can I…have a moment alone?”
The first man turned to the second, “We need a coffee break anyway, yeah? All right, but make it quick.”
And with that, they left the room.
Till took Flake’s body into his arms, placing him on a nearby stretcher, covering him with a sheet. He noticed a lab coat nearby and tried it on. Miracle of miracles, it was a perfect fit.
He wheeled the stretcher down the hall, careful not to arouse suspicion. Somehow, no one seemed to even take any notice of his presence.
He got out the door, and snuck around the side of the building. He called a cab from his mobile. It arrived, and Till had Flake dressed in the lab coat, held in his arms.
He threw Flake’s credit card at the driver. “Charge what you want, ask no questions…Get us to the beach.”
The driver shrugged and obeyed.
Soon, he pulled up to the same stretch of beach where Till had been the night before. Once Till had stepped out of the vehicle with Flake held securely in his arms, the driver sped off in terror.
Till laid Flake on a smooth rock, and kissed his cheek. “So help me, if this doesn’t work…”
Just then, the first eclipse began.
Till stood in a spot he figured was well enough away from Flake’s body. He sat in the sand, waiting for the eclipse to finish. Once the moon was full again, he began to sing…
As the last words rang out, the moon eclipsed again, in the opposite direction.
Till sat and waited…and waited…and waited…
Nothing happened.
He sobbed furiously, and stormed up the beach to the Psychic’s shop.
He noticed the sign wasn’t on, and banged on her door.
“You lied to me you bitch! Let me in!”
No response.
He banged more furiously, until the door fell off its hinges.
He stepped inside to see that the room which was so richly furnished and full before…
…was now empty and riddled with dust and cobwebs, as if it hadn’t been inhabited in centuries.
He fell to his knees and sobbed.
“I don’t understand, I just don’t understand…Why? What happened? What did I do wrong?”
He laid in the floor, sobbing, and was suddenly overtaken by a deep, penetrating sleep.
********************************
He awoke to find himself in a large, lush bed.
He felt a stirring beside him.
“You just want a beer.”
“What?” Till questioned, seeing a half-awake Flake beside him.
“You said you wanted to go out, because it’s been a long time since we have…But I know, you just want an excuse to go get a beer.”
Till sat, mouth agape in disbelief. “No, on second thought…let’s stay in and do something else we haven’t done in a while.”
“What’s that?” Flake asked coyly.
Till took him into his arms and kissed him with all the love he had inside.
“You act as if you haven’t seen me in a million years, Till. Are you ok?”
“I’m going to be just fine, now please…just kiss me…”
Flake smiled sweetly, and was all too happy to oblige.
Just then, Till heard a noise out the window.
POP! POP! POP!
Till bolted for it, throwing back the curtain.
Out the window he saw the car and the four men from that fateful night. They were all laid out on the sidewalk. Around them were police officers.
“Get his gun!” one officer shouted to another as it fired, the bullets just missing him.
They arrested the four men, and threw them into the back of patrol cars.
Till sobbed with relief.
Flake stood behind him, embracing him.
“Are you sure you’re ok?”
“I have you…I couldn’t be better.”
They kissed passionately, tumbling into a mass of bodies into the bed.
Till soon realized the moon hadn’t eclipsed twice…Time had reversed…
Time had given him a second chance at true love…
A chance he was certain to never take for granted.
Wilder Wein - vor diesem Dunkel
Wilder Wein - von Licht geheilt
es bleibt verborgen - sonst könnten wir uns wehren
ich warte auf dich - am Ende der Nacht

Wild wine - for the dark
wild wine - cured from the light
it remains hidden - we are capable of defending ourselves
I wait up for you - at the end of the night
