CHAPTER 1
The noise just wouldn't stop.
Hayden Christensen opened his eyes to darkness. It was nighttime and he sat first class on Continental Airlines Flight 576. He had to get out of Los Angeles. Away from the paparazzi; away from the fans; away from...Star Wars. He just couldn't do it anymore. He couldn't have his life being dissected every single way. He no longer had anonymity. He no longer had peace and quietness. He no longer had family time; friends time. He expected all that to be taken away when he started acting, but not like this. He went from nobody to The Chosen One practically over night....or so it felt that way. He just wanted to be alone. He just wanted peace and tranquility and quietness.
But he wasn't getting that. Not on this flight anyways. A baby cried, no, shrieked behind him. He peaked through the tiny space between the seats. The mother had turned on her overhead light and slowly rocked it back and forward, back and forward, back and forward.
‘God, can't she see that isn't working?!' Hayden thought to himself. He quickly got up from his seat and turned around to the young woman. She couldn't be no more than twenty-five. Her big green eyes looked at his agitated blue ones with an apologetic look. For a second, his heart hurt, but only for a second. He sat in the empty seat across from her. "May I?" He said, holding out his arms.
The young woman looked at him warily. Hayden didn't miss her look. Of course she would be apprehensive to letting him hold her baby; after all, he was a complete stranger to her. But, Hayden stood his ground. He stared into her eyes hard. ‘Just give me the damn baby lady.' Surely enough, the woman gave him the baby. That came to a surprise to Hayden. It was almost as if he used a Jedi mind trick on her or something. He held the baby carefully in his arms. Bringing the small body to his chest, its head resting on Hayden's shoulder. Hayden softly rubbed one of his hands on the baby's back in a slow, rhythmic motion. When he babysat his nieces and nephews, his Mom showed him that trick. It wasn't just for burping; it was also for soothing the baby. Hayden softly shushed the baby as it quieted down a bit. After a few moments, the baby's crying had stopped and it fell asleep. He slowly placed the baby back into the young woman's arms, carefully not to wake it up. The young woman smiled at Hayden as he stood up.
"Thank you." She whispered. "You're a lifesaver."
Hayden nodded to her and turned around, returning to his seat. ‘No, I'm just a guy trying to get some damn sleep.' He closed his eyes. Quietness.
**********
Hayden was awakened by the stewardess, telling him that they would be landing in a few moments. He mentally cursed her for waking him up out of his nice sleep but he couldn't stay mad at her. After all, she was doing her job. He heard the captain over the speakers giving orders and did what he was told. He looked outside the window at Via Apia Nuopa where Rome's airport, Ciampino, is located. After he aborted the plane, he was escorted by the stewardess to his private car. She told him his bags and other belongings would be arriving at his Montoro apartment the next day. Hayden thanked her before the driver ushered him in the car. It took about twenty minutes to get to the city of Rome and another ten minutes to get to his hotel, The Regina Hotel Baglioni, in the famous Via Veneto, located in the center of Rome. Hayden got out of the car as fast as he could and rushed into the hotel lobby. He got a couple of curious glances but paid no mind to them. They didn't matter. Only his room and that bed mattered right now.
He could almost feel the hot water relieving the stress from his aching muscles. Maybe the bath would ease his stress or the long sleep that awaited him afterwards. He rubbed his large hands over his face. He looked at himself in the mirror as he undressed. He hated the sight before him; he looked dead. His eyes were red with dark circles underneath them and his skin was paler than usual. He still had the muscle from when he bulked up from Star Wars so he didn’t look like a total corpse. He scrunched his face in disgust and threw his clothes to the side. After dipping his foot in first to test the water, Hayden eased down into the large Jacuzzi; the hot water working its magic almost immediately. He sighed as he laid his head back, closing his eyes. His body felt heavy and weak. The water was working too well. He felt himself slowing go into a deep sleep. It was probably a good idea to get out of the tub, but he wasn’t going to fight it. Not tonight. This is what he needed—sleep
