My Happy Ending
*****
So much for my happy ending
Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh…
*****
Outside in the harsh January air, my hands and fingers were frozen all the way to the bone. My feet, although they were enclosed in tall, fleece-lined boots, were almost to the point of falling off from the deep and frigid snow on the ground. My lips were frostbitten, my eyes watering and all I wanted to do was go inside the apartment I was standing in front of and slip inside the hot waters of my porcelain tub. Unfortunately, the apartment was much colder inside than it was outside.
*****
Let’s talk this over
It’s no like were dead
Was it something I did?
Was it something you said?
*****
“What’s the problem with going to a party? You like my friends?” Orlando says as he paces around the bedroom. The problem was not going to the party, but that every time we go to a party he spends more time with his friends than me. I was always sitting in the corner or standing by the refreshment table, waiting for him to stop talking. He is right though; I do like his friends. They are very nice and always make me feel welcome, but I just wish he would try harder to include me in the conversation.
“I do like your friends, but you are always leaving me out of everything. I am your girlfriend, damnnit! I should be treated like it.” I say loudly.
“I would treat you like my girlfriend if you would act like it, and this isn’t all my fault, you’re never interested in anything we talk about. You always sit there with a look of complete boredom on your face!” He says enraged.
*****
Don’t leave me hanging
In a city so dead
Held up so high
On such a breakable thread
*****
I sigh softly as I sit down onto the bed. “I want to be apart of your conversation…I’m just…nervous.”
“Why sweetheart? You have nothing to be nervous about. All my friends love you!” He says as he sits down next to me and puts his arms around me affectionately. “And I love you too.”
I smile up at him and said, “I love you too. I will try harder to include myself in your conversations.”
“I’ll try harder too.” He smiles and kisses me softly…

You were all the things I thought I knew
And I thought that we could be…

I walk around to the hood of my car, sit down on it and stare up at the highest window of the apartment building. Our bedroom. The bedroom we have shared for two years. The bedroom we shared our first kiss and the room we made love in. Why was he sharing it with someone else? Was I not pretty enough? Was I not smart enough? Maybe he just didn’t love me anymore.
As I thought of the answers to all the questions in my mind, tears start flooding down from my eyes and the cold January air blew harder, drying the cold tears to my face. I reach into my coat pocket and pulled out a tissue, drying my eyes and nose as I stare up at the window…

“Here is the key to your apartment, I hope you enjoy it.” The realtor says as she hands me a silver key.
I clutch it in my hand, feeling the cold metal against my warm skin, and look up at Orlando to see him smiling at me. “This is our first apartment.” He says happily, hugging me against his warm, hard body. I stand on my toes and kiss him softly on his lips as he holds me securely. This was the man I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with…

You were everything, everything that I wanted
We were meant to be, supposed to be, but we lost it
And all the memories, so close to me, just fade away
*****
I get into my car and start driving, not really sure what I was doing and didn’t really care where I was going. I just needed to get away from this place, the place where my dreams came true and, now, where my nightmare lives.
Driving when you’re angry is one of the worst things you could do, apart from drinking and driving. You’re so out of the world of reality that you can’t concentrate on the driving part. Regrettably, I had no other choice but to drive. I didn’t know where else to go or what else to do. All of my family resides in the states and I have no real friends here that I could turn to. At this very moment, I could say I was alone and my life; as I know it; was completely over, and it was taken away from me by one man, the man that I supposedly loved.
I turn a corner and speed down the street, trying to find some place of sanctuary so I could contemplate my options. Unlike the states, there were no hotels or motels open, no twenty-four hour convenience stores or restaurants. Not even a freakin’ McDonalds within twenty-five miles just so I could get a cup of coffee to calm my nerves. At 3:47am, the only source of light was from the streetlamps that lit up the sidewalks and a few porch lights every once in a while. I took another tissue from my pocket and wiped my eyes for the hundredth time that night. I can not believe he would do this. He told me he loved me, does that mean nothing anymore? Apparently it doesn’t because the last time I saw him, it looked as if he was in love with someone else.
*****
All this time you were pretending
So much for my happy ending
Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh…
You’ve got your dumb friends
I know what they say
They tell you I’m difficult
But so are they…

“Happy birthday to you!” Everyone sings as Orlando blows out the twenty-seven candles that littered his cake. Everyone clapped and cheered when he blew out all the candles. After he cut the cake, someone grabs the knife and starts dishing out the cake as Orlando walks over to me.
“I thought you said you’re going to try to have a good time.” He scolded when he saw me sitting on one of the couches.
“I am, can’t I take a break?” I say heatedly.
He sighs and walks back over to a group of his friends.
“What’s up with her, man?” Daniel says as he takes a drink out of his beer bottle.
“Yeah, she’s been sort of friendly, and then she goes away?” Sean says, eating a piece of the cake.
Orlando sighs, leaning up against the counter in the kitchen. “I don’t know…she says she is nervous because she doesn’t want to embarrass herself, and I tried to tell her she wouldn’t, but she doesn’t get it.”
Sean finishes his cake, sets the plate down on the table, and said, “She is difficult dude, you should get rid of her. You need someone like…Audrey. Do you know she’s attracted to you?”
“I love Jen, guys; I’m not going to dump her.” Orlando says, handing them each a beer and opening up one for him self.
Daniel grabs his and said, “Suit yourself, but if you do decide to get rid of Jen, Audrey has been looking at you all night long.”
Orlando turns his head in the direction of the open patio door to see Audrey leaning against the railing, staring at him with dark, lust-filled blue eyes. He sighs to himself and stares back at his friends, who were looking at him with knowing glances.
*****
But they don’t know me
Do they even know you?
All the things you hide from me
All the shit that you do

I walk up the stairs; trying hard not to knock any of the kissing couples out of their reveries; and looked around for a bathroom. I couldn’t hear what Daniel was saying over the loud thumping bass of the stereo, so I decided just to wing it and hoped I wouldn’t walk into any unsuspecting couple in the midst of something.
I open the first door and found it was a linen closet.
I open another door and found a bunch of guys playing a play-station and some girls cheering them on.
I open another door and found…Orlando…in bed with another girl.
My brown eyes grew wider and my throat closed up, preventing me from screaming out in complete horror. The only thing I could do was stare at the couple in bed as they move their bodies in pleasure, vocalizing their ecstasy. As I see them almost complete their job, I quietly close the door and slide down the wall, finally having the ability to cry…

I turn another corner to find myself back on the street in front of my apartment. I grab the spot I recently vacated, turn off the engine and stare off into the night sky. My mind was telling me to go up there and confront him, but my body wasn’t communicating with my mind. The only thing I could do was stare and remember some of the happy times Orlando and I shared. The time we went to Hawaii for Christmas, the times we use to just sit in front of the fire and talk about nothing in particular, the times we would make love in the bed that he was now using with another woman. I close my eyes and sigh, trying to gain composure of the situation. When I calmed down, I decided that I had two choices.
One would be to just drive away with the things I had on now and start a new life somewhere else.
The other would be what I was doing right now…

It’s nice to know you were there
Thanks for acting like you cared
And making me feel like I was the only one

I open the door of the posh apartment building and was greeted by Charles, who was the night doorman. “Hello Miss Landry, how are you this evening?” He says happily, not knowing what was going to happen in the next five minutes.
“Just great Charles, sorry I can’t stay and chat, but I have some very important business to attend to. I’ll talk to you later though.” I say, trying to keep my cool.
Charles smiles and said, “Of course Miss Landry, I hope everything is okay?”
I smile wryly at him as I hit the button on the elevator door. “Everything is just fine Charles.” Then I walk into the elevator…

It’s nice to know we had it all
Thanks for watching me as I fall
And letting me know we were done
You were everything, everything that I wanted
We were meant to be, suppose to be, but we lost it
And all of the memories, so close to me, just fade away
All this time you were pretending
So much for my happy ending

I quietly open the door to the apartment, close the door gently and stand in the hallway. It was completely dark; save for the low candlelight coming from the door of the bedroom, and it was very quiet, except for the moans and groans coming from the bedroom. Hearing the noises made what I was about to do even more clear. I walk over to the mantle of the fireplace and grab one of the expensive Ming vases, walking slowly and quietly to the bedroom door…

I open the door to the bedroom, hearing the moans growing louder, and silently entered the bedroom, closing the door behind me. For a second, I just stood there and watched them as Orlando was moving in and out of the girl underneath him; from what I could tell from my angle, a look of pleasure on his face. Just as their climax starts, I take the vase and threw it at the plate glass window on the other side of the room, sending the vase and the window into a million pieces and startling the couple in bed. They both cover themselves up with the white satin sheet, and in a way, trying to cover up what I already known was going on.
Orlando opens his mouth in an attempt to either save the relationship or himself, but I quickly interrupt. “DON’T! Don’t you dare say anything Orlando. We are through, and there is nothing you could say that would change the situation.” I say calmly, and then walk out, leaving them completely stunned. I slowly walk down the long apartment hallway to the intent stares of all the tenants and workers. I turn my head around to see Orlando in nothing but the white sheet from the bed and his accomplice standing next to him in one of his t-shirts. When I get down to the elevator, I hit the down button and I turn around, staring at Orlando.
“Well…As Avril Lavigne says…so much for my happy ending.” I say in general, and then walk into the open elevator, staring at him as the door closes.
