He knelt before her and laid his sword between them. “Your Highness, I ask for a second chance.”
Her expression was blank. “And what, pray tell, would inspire me to reinstate you?”
His head had been bowed. He glanced up in surprise. “I believe I could set things right.”
Queen Katherine’s smile was barely noticeable before her expression became unreadable again.. “Go. You have my blessing.”
Sir Kay strode into the castle. He heard laughter in the grand hall, but the sound did not bring a smile to his face. He recognized the sound of Lady Morgana’s laugh because it closely resembled the bray of a mule.
“I have returned.” His voice echoed down the stone corridor.
“Sir Kay!”
At this voice, he did smile. “Milady.”
“I never expected.” She hugged him, then pulled back to look at him again before laughing. “This is wonderful.”
“The Queen has given me her blessing.” He whispered.
“And what of Sir Michael?”
“He lives.”
Lady Janelle beamed at him. He smiled back, despite the feeling that an arrow had just struck him in the chest.
“Sir Kay has returned.” She spoke to someone behind him.
“I had noticed.” Sir Howard replied with a laugh. “You sound quite like an ox on the stairs, Lady Janelle.”
“Perhaps you should have been a jester, Howard.” She shook her head, but there was no anger in her tone.
“It seems that our foes have remained.” Sir Kay commented. Lady Janelle looked weary as she nodded.
“We should discuss this elsewhere.” He glanced at the staircase.
Sir Howard kept watch as Lady Janelle and Sir Kay spoke in hushed voices. Their enemies were still in the main hall, and they were plotting how to get rid of them. Sir Kay did not believe that killing was a justifiable solution, despite Janelle’s insistence that it was necessary.
“Sir Michael would slay all of them at my request.” Janelle blurted.
The knight’s face looked grim. “Sir Michael is not here, milady. I am. You will have to make do.”
She gave him a pleading look.
“Lady!” He looked away, frustrated.
“Your belief is that we need to remove them one by one, like chess pieces. Don’t you see that you’re giving them time to retaliate?”
“I have promised not to shed blood.”
“You are useless!” Janelle snapped.
“And you are trying my patience. Now sit and be still.”
Her eyes widened. “You would speak to me that way?”
“I don’t believe that the two of you are doing a thing to resolve our situation.”
Sir Kay looked up as Lady Rachelle entered the room.
“It is nice to see you again.” Rachelle told him.
“I return the sentiment.” He smiled.
Sir Kay had finally agreed to Lady Janelle’s plan, but the idea did not please him. He crept down the dark stairs and collided with someone.
“It is me.” Sir Michael said quickly. “I’ve come here for vengeance.”
“A plan has already been made.” He replied.
“Nevermind yours. Mine will be better.”
“And you have seen into the future to know this to be true?” Sir Kay mocked.
“I believe we have the same goal.”
“I believe differently.”
“And why is that?”
“Because the Queen has promised that the person who can rid this castle of vagrants will rule it.”
Sir Michael smirked at him. “And you believe yourself capable of such a task?”
“I do more than believe it.”
“A challenge! Are we to fight to the death, then?”
“Do you wish to die?” He asked calmly.
“I see that I’m going to get no rise out of you.” Sir Michael turned on the staircase and started making his way down when Sir Kay’s voice stopped him.
“At dawn. In the court yard. I hope your sword is as sharp as your wit. I would not like to be at an unfair advantage.”
“I believe that is my honor, as I have the affections of the Lady Janelle.”
“That is because she doesn’t know your true nature.”
“She will when I take her to bed.” Michael laughed. “After I have defeated you.”
Janelle covered her mouth with her hand. She had overheard the conversation between the knights. She clutched her skirts in her hands and crept back up the stairs.
Sir Kay stood in the courtyard an hour before dawn. He hadn’t slept since his confrontation with Sir Michael, the man who had once been his friend.
Lady Janelle stared down into the court yard. “Kaysar is preparing to kill Sir Michael.” She said quietly.
Rachelle looked startled. Most people referred to the knights by their proper titles. Women who used the more familiar names were the ones that the knights went on to marry. She looked over Janelle’s shoulder as Sir Kay brought his sword down in an arc and turned in a different direction. She could see why Janelle would be watching; his movements were like a dance.
Janelle looked up at the sky. “It is nearing dawn.” She muttered.
Rachelle’s mouth twisted in disgust as the vagrants took seats to watch the duel between the knights. They wanted to see blood. “Vultures.” She scowled and crossed the yard to where Sir Kay stood. “The Lady Janelle would like you to reconsider.”
“The Lady Janelle will be disappointed.”
“Stubborn man!” Rachelle hissed.
“Please, milady….should anything happen to me, give Lady Janelle my regards.”
She turned to stare at him. “Your regards, sir?”
“Yes.” He nodded.
“Perhaps you should live and deliver them yourself.” She walked away.
“Back out now, and I will graciously accept your defeat.” Sir Michael told him.
“You can graciously accept your own.” He retorted.
The swordfight went on for the better part of the day. Sir Kay refused to surrender, but he slowed down whenever Sir Michael seemed to be getting winded. Finally, Michael tossed his sword to the ground. “Kill me. End this. I cannot go on.” He knelt in the dirt.
“No. You will leave here at once and not return. Swear it, and I will let you go in peace. Break your vow, and I will break mine.”
“I swear.” The other knight said weakly. “You have my word.”
Kaysar nodded and turned to the onlookers. “Sir Michael has…”
“Sir Kay!” Janelle shrieked. “Behind you.”
He spun in time to see Michael swinging at his throat and moved out of the way.
“Never take your enemy at his word.” Sir Michael laughed cruelly.
The battle continued, ending much in the same way as before. But this time…
“As I can no longer respect your word, I have no choice.” He swung his sword.
Sir Michael closed his eyes.
The sword clattered to the ground. “Guards, take him to the dungeon.”
And then he turned his attention to the vagrants. His gaze fell on Lady Morgana. “I expect you and your friends to leave here at once, or you will suffer a worse fate. I do not grant the same courtesy to thieves that I do to those in my league.”
“And what words of anger do you have for me, sir?” Lady Janelle called out as she crossed the yard. “Perhaps my dress is the wrong color, or my hair has a strand that needs tending.”
“No, milady.” He said quietly. “I owe you my life, and my gratitude.”
“And I owe you an apology. I had the misfortune of hearing Sir Michael’s plans for me.”
He eyed her carefully. “And how did you hear that? We spoke in whispers.”
“I brought the misfortune on myself.” She looked embarrassed.
“You may visit him if you wish.” Now he looked embarrassed. “Forgive me, milady. I did not mean to sound as though you needed my permission.”
“I would rather not grant him my attention.”
“No?” He smiled.
“There is someone else who I feel is more deserving.”
“I see. In that case, I suppose I will leave you to him.”
“You are far too clever for someone with the brain of a turnip.” She told him.
“I beg your pardon, milady?”
“I was speaking of you, dolt.”
He grinned.
“I have heard that knights are to take several vows during their training.” She said casually. “Is that true?”
“Yes.”
“Including the vow of celibacy?”
He blushed.
“Ah, so it is true.” She laughed. “Would I be too forward to ask the terms of the vow?”
“Marriage, milady.” He couldn’t take his eyes off of her.
“And now this castle is yours, and you are to become a king?”
He nodded.
“It has been said that kings do better with queens by their side.” She smiled.
“I will consider that.” He winked.
