Disclaimer: This is a work of fiction. I do not know the members of Green Day. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
Disclaimer: I don’t own Green Day, wish I did, that would be awesome…. And the song isn’t mostly mine either. It’s “The Girl Next Door” by Saving Jane. I doctored the lyrics a bit and imagined a punk version of it. The other song is “Look What Happened” by Less than Jake.
This is my first shot at Green Day fics, leave me some feedback if you like it! Thanks

Rhiannon Donovan shot up in bed when the incessant beeping wouldn’t stop. Groaning and reaching over the nightstand, slapping the off button on her alarm she asked herself why in the hell she was getting up at seven am on a Saturday.
“Oh fuck.” She yelped, looking over at her guitar in the corner. She had an audition at nine. That’s why she was up. Leaping out of bed she made a mad dash for her cell phone on her desk. Hitting speed dial 2 she called Wendy.
“Uhhhh WHAT?” Wendy groaned on the other end.
“Wendy, are you up?”
“I am now! What in Gods good name do you want?”
“OUR AUDITION IS TODAY!”
“Shit….”
“Get up, get ready and get over here, and call Cassie.”
“Ok ok ok Rhi, give me a few minutes I need coffee and a smoke.”
“Just don’t be late Wendy!”
“Yea yea, bye.”
Rhiannon took a shower all why muttering to herself, making sure she remembered all her lyrics.
The shower took all of 15 minutes, it was the clothes selection that took the longest. She was in her underwear and a robe still digging through her clothes, most of which had found their way from the wardrobe to her bed and the floor when Wendy showed up.
“Your dad let me in.” Wendy explained, barging through the door. “Jesus kid, pick something and get it over with.”
“I CANT decide!” Rhiannon yelled, throwing her hands in the air.
“Alright kiddo, here sit down.” Wendy rolled the desk chair over to Rhiannon and pointed at her pack of Marlboros on the desk. “Have some nicotine and that shitty ass menthol you like, calm down, and I’ll pick something.”
“Ok.” Rhiannon did as directed. She and Wendy Lawton had been best friends since kindergarten. Wendy was six months older than Rhiannon, and always called her kiddo. They had started a band back in their sophomore year, Brokenhearted Dolls, along with another friend, Cassie Carter. Rhiannon played guitar, sang lead vocals, Wendy played bass sang backup and Cassie played drums. Nice little set up. At first they redid others’ songs, punked out others’, finally they started writing their own.
Finally they got their break, near the end of their senior year. They had been playing at a private party and it just so happened that one of the guys attending liked them and referred them to his brother in law’s company.
“Here” Wendy said, laying out a few articles of clothing on a now cleaned off bed. Rhiannon finished the cigarette and put it out; checking out what Wendy had lain out. She had a keen fashion sense, but this was a BIG day. “Just trust me kid, it’ll look hot.”
Rhiannon looked doubtful, but slipped on the button up dress shirt, with gray, hot pink and black stripes. Over it she put on a charcoal gray shirt that read “Keep staring, I just might do a trick” in hot pink letters. Grabbing the ripped up jeans she slid them on. Wendy handed her a belt from the wardrobe.
“My fave.” Rhiannon laughed. It was a plain black one, but the buckle was a silver anarchy symbol. She dug around, found her black sketchers with hot pink on them.
“Hotness?” she asked.
“Almost, let me do your makeup.” Wendy said, dragging her into the bathroom. She lined Rhiannon’s bright blue eyes with black liner and gray eye shadow with a tiny dusting of pink. Contemplating lip choices, she found a natural looking pink. “You don’t need much dear, your lips and complexion are perfect.” She added gloss and turned Rhiannon to look in the mirror.
Her hair she left alone. It was straight, glossy, and naturally black. It looked nice.
“And I have a surprise for you.” Wendy smiled, handing her something.
Rhiannon held it up. It was a black choker with a silver heart with a dagger hanging from it. Wendy already had one on, and she was holding another, for Cassie.
Cassie showed up in short order. They looked like a punk version of a herbal essence commercial. One red head, one black and one blonde.
They loaded what equipment they would need into the back of Wendy’s Grand Cherokee and headed to the studio.
“You realize, if we do well, we could be opening for someone big?”
“Yes, Rhi, we all know what this means, just calm down. Just think of it as any typical gig. Don’t get worked up.”
“So who are we going to be opening for?” Cassie asked from the backseat.
“I don’t know.” Rhiannon replied. “Dave just said someone big, not to screw up. He’s done a lot for us. They don’t typically take someone brand new straight up like this.”
Dave was waiting at the studio and helped the girls carry in their stuff and showed them to the room they would be auditioning in. They were basically in a recording booth.
“You wont see them.” He explained. “They don’t want you distracted. Just pretend you already hit it big and you’re recording your first album.” He grinned, patting Rhiannon on the back. “You’ll do fine.”
He popped back in a few minutes later. “Ok girls, ready when you are.”
Rhiannon sighed, looked at Cassie and nodded. She counted them off and they launched into their first songs with the first strains from Rhiannon’s guitar.
Taking a deep breath, glancing over at Wendy, receiving a reassuring nod, Rhiannon started to sing.
“Small town homecoming queen
She’s the star in this scene
There’s no way to deny she’s lovely
Perfect skin perfect hair
Perfumed hearts everywhere
Tell myself that inside she’s ugly
I can't help but hate her
Secretly I wonder if my boyfriend wants to date her”
Rhiannon got further into the song, belting out the chorus,
”She is the prom queen I'm in the marching band
She is a cheerleader I'm sittin in the stands
She gets the top bunk I'm sleepin on the floor
She’s Miss America and I'm just the punk girl next door
Senior class president
She must be heaven sent
She was never the last one standing
A backseat debutant
Everything that you want
Never to harsh or too demanding
Maybe I'll admit it
I'm a little bitter
Everybody loves her but I just wanna hit her
I get a little bit, she gets a little more
She’s fake everything, I’m just punk
She’s got her pom-pom’s, I got my guitar
I really just wanna hit her…”
Letting the last notes die away, Rhiannon let out a breath she didn’t know she had been holding in the last notes.
Dave stuck his head in again. “Great girls, can we get one more?”
“Umm sure.” Rhiannon looked a little nervous. She thought they would just have to make it through one song, not two. She turned to Wendy and Cassie.
“What’s it gonna be girls?”
Cassie shrugged and Rhiannon turned to Wendy. “Look what happened?” Wendy suggested.
Rhiannon gulped, it was a good song, one of their best, but it was new. They hadn’t practiced it all that much, nor lately. She nodded to Cassie, let her count them off and when she began the song, she forgot to be scared.
“And I swear it's the last time and I swear it's my last try
And we'll walk in circles around this whole block
Walk on the cracks on the same old sidewalks
And we'll talk about leaving town
Yeah we'll talk about leaving
I swear it's the last time I swear it's my last try
We rode across that bridge all night
We talked our way through city lights
Traced all the lines we're killing time
Under those buzzing signs
From downtown to anywhere but here
Tonight yeah I swear to these rooftops
And just hoped that car would never stop
We drove around this place all night
Past closed signs and familiar sights
We're moving by passing time
Counting those center lines
With 20,000 lines left to go
That lead to somewhere I don't know
It might be the time that we leave this all behind
There's been a few times
That we thought it felt right
To take all the westbound signs
And just leave town tonight
I swear it's the last time
I swear it's my last try”
Rhiannon let her head hang after the song ended. Dave would be in any second now to tell them they bombed it and could go home. He took a little longer than she thought but he was there in a few minutes.
“Ok girls…. You got the job!” he yelled.”
“Oh my fucking God!” Wendy screamed, jumping over cords and diving for Rhiannon, hugging her within an inch of her life. It didn’t matter though, Rhiannon seemed to have forgotten to breathe. They got the job….holy shit. They were going to make it big now!
“AhhhH” Rhiannon screamed, hugging Wendy back.
“Want to meet who you will be opening for?” Dave asked, a mischievous grin on his face.
Once the scream fest was over, they followed Dave out of the room.
