Dedicated to Judy
Darren sighed deeply while trying to collect his thoughts. He chewed on the top of the pencil in his hand while staring at the meaningless circles and patterns on the page in the small, black notebook in front of him.
His creative juices just weren’t flowing right now… ‘Give us another Truly, Madly, Deeply’, is what they had said. Demanded. As if these things could be mandated like a shopping list.
But he just couldn’t get his mind into “song-writing-mood”; it was elsewhere at the moment…
He watched from where he lay, stretched out on his stomach on a comfy, red couch with big cushions, crumbled pieces of paper all around him. For some reason he had managed to miss the wastepaper basket almost every time.
Watched through the wide-open door, leading into a big, bright room dominated by a giant window, which let the gentle midday-sun in generously. In front of it stood a grand, black piano, it’s smooth surface reflecting the light beautifully.
But Darren’s eyes were drawn to something other than the fascing ing play of light…
His eyes paused and dwelt on the tall, lean figure, standing in front of the piano. Daniel had leaned his upper-body slightly forward, so half of him lay in shadow, but his face was still visible to Darren as the sunbeams streamed through the window, illuminating his handsome features with a golden glow.
He seemed lost in thoughts as well, his head maybe reeling with bits and pieces of music; the formula for another wonderful melody. Or mahis his Muse was playing hide and seek, too. His expression gave nothing away; always a mystery…
Darren continued gazing at his friend; knew that if he looked long enough, Daniel would open up to him; he would be able to read Daniel’s body-language and see something in those green eyes which always spoke to him. Understand some of what wasn’t said with words…
This was an unspoken part of their relationship that wasn’t only limited to music… Neither of them ever talked about it or mentioned it in any other way, but they both knew…
As Darren drank in the sight of Daniel, his hand started moving the pencil over the paper again, and this time circles and strange patterns turned to words and sentences as the voice of his heart spoke silently…
…
Daniel ran a hand through his hair and then reached out, grabbed his water bottle and took a big gulp. It was very hot in California this time of year. Record heat they had said, and even though he only wore very loose pants and a white T-shirt, he already felt the skin on his back turn damp with sweat.
He was just sitting back on the small piano-bench when a sound made him look up towards the entrance to the room. A smile lit up his face as he saw Darren standing there…
“Hi Dazza. How’s your writing going?”
They always wrote music and lyrics separately, and then in the end revealed the result to each other. Daniel would come with a newborn music-piece, and Darren would help bring it to life with the emotion and love he put into every corner of his lyrics. Or Darren could present a song where Daniel was his instrument, bringing his magic to their creation.
Two parts that together was so amazingly complete…
Darren smiled almost shyly at Daniel, both his hands hugging the little notebook tightly. He walked slowly into the room and ended up standing in front of the piano, shifting slowly from foot to foot.
“I wrote something,” he said finally, meeting Daniel’s eyes. “It’s not much yet; actually it’s only a chorus, but I want you to hear it; just to know what you think… And maybe it can give you some ideas…”
Daniel just nodded. Then he leaned forward, opened the cover and ran his hands searchingly over the smooth, white keys to check their sound. He nodded again; this time to himself, but then he sat back and looked at Darren.
“Sing it for me…” His voice was soft.
…
Darren swallowed and took a deep breath. He looked at Daniel again and saw that he was smiling at him, and with that image in mind, he closed his eyes and began to sing; just loud enough for the two of them to hear:
I knew I loved you before I met you
I think I dreamed you into life
I knew I loved you before I met you
I have been waiting all my life
…
Daniel watched Darren… He sucked in a breath as he heard the first haunting tones. The song went straight to his heart; touched something in him, woke feelings he had tried to put to sleep. And not taking his eyes off Darren, he let his hands wander over the keys; playing a soft rhythm, just following, and trying to accompany Darren’s voice.
It was not hard to reach the right notes; somehow it just came naturally…
And suddenly he noticed the smile that played around Darren’s lips; he still had his eyes closed and was still singing; repeating the newly-written lyrics… Apparently he liked what he heard too…
Darren’s eyes opened then and that something that they shared flashed between them, warming his insides while twisting them at the same time. Those feelings he had tried to put to sleep were awake and growing. And he was powerless to stop them… even if he had wanted to.
“I like it… the tune…” Darren nodded toward the piano, a wide grin on his face.
“I do, too…” Daniel nodded toward the notebook.
Why did he feel so nervous? They had always worked this way. Apart, yet together on so many levels. What made this time any different?
“Um… I, ah…” Daniel stopped trying to talk. Words had never been his strong point. Instead, his fingers moved over the keys again, replaying the tune and expanding it. He closed his eyes and played what he felt in his heart.
…
Darren’s heart fluttered as his eyes locked with Daniel’s. He’d never seen Daniel nervous around their music. He was always cool and collected. Somehow his words… the seeds of this song had broken a barrier between them. Daniel looked so sweet, flustered like he was now.
He watched and listened as Daniel’s words stumbled to a halt and moments later his fingers told what he couldn’t say. The music took on a life of its own. It embraced him and made love to him.
He felt his face grow flush. Was that really what Daniel felt? Or was it just that he wanted Daniel to feel that way? Is this what his words had done to Daniel? Inspiration washed over him then. He pulled his pencil out and began scribbling furiously in his notebook.
…
“Hey guys! How’s it going?” Walter asked after the music had come to a halt. Daniel’s eyes flew open and a smile lit his face. It was Darren who answered, though.
“Great, Walter. I think they’ll be happy, finally. We’ve got the song they wanted.” He explained with a smile.
“Well, all work and no play is not good for the creative soul. What say we go outside for a little tennis or something?”
Daniel was already standing, his lanky frame popping a bit as he stretched fully. Darren laughed lightly before shaking his head.
“All right, but I’m not playing. You know I have no coordination for these things.”
“You can be the ball-boy then while I humble your band mate.” Walter said with a wink.
“Not bloody likely.” Daniel denied with a deep chuckle.
***
It was bright and sunny outside; the heat had really gotten its grip on California.
The tennis-game was in full swing. 3 men standing on the court, the creaking sound of their shoes against the red gravel blending in with the sounds of laughter and happy outbursts.
Walter stood behind the ball-machine, shooting the yellow tennis-balls out and over the net where Daniel stood ready to return them. After a while Darren took over his place, sending the balls to Daniel as Walter got his racket and prepared for their match.
Daniel stood, concentrating and lightly shifting from foot to foot as Darren walked to the ball-machine, but as soon as the balls started to fly at him, he swung the racket wildly; sending them back over the net with a good backhand and a smash once in a while.
Darren watched him; admiring the athletic grace Daniel suddenly displayed. For a moment he forgot to work the machine, and Daniel looked at him questioningly, but didn’t say anything.
Just then Walter returned, dressed in a loose white set of shorts and a T-shirt, very similar to what Daniel was already wearing.
As they got ready for the first set, Darren moved to the side of the court and got into his position as the ball boy. As soon as a ball got out of play he would run in and get it. But he couldn’t help himself and goofed around a bit… Maybe it was the heat.
Daniel broke into a wide grin as he saw Darren run across the court after the ball in a very silly style. He shook is head at his friend’s childish joy. This was Darren for ya, and he wouldn’t want him any other way.
Darren could hear Daniel’s laughter as he ran over the ground; he loved that h, ah, and he knew that if he looked up, he would see a smile reaching all the way to Daniel’s eyes…
The thought of Daniel’s happiness created a warm pulsating feeling inside him, and he smiled.
….
When Walter had left them for a short time Daniel had talked Darren into playing a few balls with him, but after he’d made his third ace, the singer had gone to seek cover behind the ball-machine, and to pelt his musical partner with balls from a safe distance.
As they were playing just the two of them, Daniel noticed for the first time Leonie, who was standing a bit away from them with a video camera. He knew she had it fixed on him now and felt the flush flow to his face. He smiled regardless and waved shyly, but then used the racket as a weak cover-up.
He was uncomfortable at being in the limelight…
***
“What have you got there, Danny?” Darren asked.
They were resting after the tennis-match, which Walter had won. Daniel’s thoughts had been somewhere else… again.
Daniel smiled at him. “What does it look like, Darren? It’s a video camera. I stole it from Leonie…” He wriggled his brows with a grin, and looked around slowly; as if he wanted to be sure no one was watching them. Then fixed the camera on Darren…
“Cool!” Darren smiled into the lens. “You wanna go and have a look at the cars?” he asked Daniel.
“Yeah, sure! We’ll be right back,” Daniel called to the others, then followed Darren.
When they came outside Darren reached for the camera. “Come on, give it to me…”
“Nooo…” Daniel said teasingly, filming Darren with a smile on his face as the pretty Diva rolled his eyes at him.
“C’mon Dan, I want you to be in it,” Darren tried again.
But Daniel shook his head, looking at Darren through the lens. “Nonono… you’re the star!” he told him.
Finally Darren gave up and led Daniel to a big white car. He stood in front of it to show the size and on Daniel’s request he played a role as “Mini-Me” from the Austin Powers- movies, crouching down and jumping with a wide smile on his face.
Daniel let out a deep heartfelt laugh, the kind that makes you all warm and fuzzy inside. Actually, Darren thought, it was a miracle he didn’t drop the camera…
Daniel continued to film Darren as he stood up; at one point the singer nearly stumbled and Daniel found himself focusing on the
area below Darren’s waistband as he asked what he was doing. He kicked himself inwardly and hoped that Darren wouldn’t notice this when he got to watch the video later…
“Get a grip, Jones!” he hissed at himself.
***
“That’s good, Darren.” Daniel said from the mixing room.
After the tennis match they’d had a light meal and gone to the recording studio at Wallyworld. There, they worked on recording the vocals for ‘Hold Me’.
They had just finished the main voice track. Daniel was quite glad he was sitting behind the mixing desk. Darren’s emotional vocalizations moved him more than he cared to have to explain to anyone. The singer certainly made him want to hold him… and a whole lot more that the Diva might not appreciate.
They worked for another hour, this time getting the background vocals laid. When they were all happy with the vocals, they decided to stop for the evening.
After another light meal Darren decided he was ready to turn in. Daniel, however, wanted to go start working on the mix more.
Daniel nodded briefly to one of Walter’s technicians outside the room, not really seeing the man, but not wanting to be rude. In the booth, he sat with the headphones on, listening to Darren’s mournful voice.
‘Because tonight I’m finding it hard to be your man’
“Danny.”
Daniel jumped when Darren’s hand touched his shoulder. He hoped the low lights in the mixing booth didn’t show the blush on his cheeks… or the tight pants further down.
“I’m sorry, Danny. I didn’t mean to scare you. Are you coming to bed?”
Daniel’s heart stopped. “What?” He managed to choke out. He felt his cheeks burn, no more the light heat of blush, as he saw Darren standing beside him in boxers and a T-shirt. His pants tightened uncomfortably.
“We had a big day today and we’ve got a long day tomorrow. I’d like to work on our new song. We had a good start before. Are you going to get some sleep?”
Daniel’s mind spun. For just a moment he had thought… but then he realized that Darren hadn’t intended to ask the question in a sexual way… had he? Darren’s smile was pure innocence as he waited for his reply.
“Ah… um… no—not right now. I want to get this mix finished so Walter can go over it in the morning.”
“Don’t wear yourself out, Danny. I worry about you, you know? We’ve got time. See you in the morning.”
Daniel nodded wordlessly as he watched Darren’s boxer-clad arse wiggle out the door. Neither of them saw the technician in the hallway, observing Darren a little too closely.
***
The technician watched the two in the booth. Desire burned in his eyes as his gaze raked over the dark-haired man standing practically naked in front of him. How he wanted to feel the body beneath him. Feel it move and writhe and give him all the pleasure he knew it could.
He hadn’t been able to believe his good fortune when he found out they would be coming here to work. He’d quickly put a plan into action. Now he’d be able to forego the mask he’d been wearing all this time.
No one would miss him, he felt sure. He’d covered his disappearance well, he thought. After all his mother had been on Death's door a while now. No one would be surprised to find a note saying she’d passed away in the night, and he was sorry, but he needed time off right now.
The old security building on the south end of the property was never checked any more. It would be perfect for his plans. He hoped Daniel enjoyed the activities he had planned. Too bad he wouldn’t be able to hear Darren’s voice screaming… well, at least he was going to enjoy it all.
He rubbed the bulge in his pants as the singer walked back to his room, not even looking around as he wandered the halls barely clothed. Then he turned his attention to the blonde still in the booth. He fancied the brightly colored shirt and smiled. His smile almost as bright as that of the man inside.
He was glad for the low lights in the booth as he entered with a bottle of water. “Thought you might like a drink of water.” He had practiced until he could speak as low as the man he faced.
“Thanks.” Daniel said quietly. He moved back from the mixing desk while he took a long drink of the cool water.
“It’s sounding really good.” He said, inwardly cursing himself at his nervousness. He had everything planned. There wouldn’t be any problems. No reason to be nervous.
Daniel smiled and put the headphones back on. The man waited back in the shadows. What was taking so long? He sighed when Daniel began to look strange.
Daniel shook his head. He stood up and swayed a bit. “I—I—” Was all he managed.
The man grabbed him as he started to fall. He hoisted Daniel over his shoulder in a typical injured-man carry and moved quickly and quietly out of the main building. He grew giddy as he made it to the isolated security building. He set Daniel in the waiting chair and tied his ankles to the chair. Then he took off the shirt he coveted, and then he tied Daniel’s hands behind the chair. He turned on the monitors and watched them for a bit. Everything was quiet. He peeled the makeup off his face. Made sure his
contacts were in place.
He was watching Darren sleep when Daniel regained consciousness.
…
“What the hell is going on here? You bastard, what do you think you’re doing?” Daniel snarled as he struggled with the ropes binding him to the chair.
The man giggled insanely. Then he unzipped his pants and began working himself as he studied a small TV.
“This,” he pointed, it was a monitor, Daniel realized. “Is my boyfriend.” The man commented absently as he grew hard in his hand. “I am going to make him very happy. In a way you never have.” He nodded.
“You leave Darren alone! Don’t you dare lay a finger on him!” he yelled.
“You’ll be singing a different tune, after you see how much he loves me. And after you’ve been out here alone for a bit. It gets hot out here. But you’ll be able to see it all from here. They never come here any more.”
He turned then, and Daniel gasped. Not only was he wearing Daniel’s favorite shirt, he looked like him. He shook his head.
“Darren doesn’t love you. He—he—he’ll know you aren’t me!”
Daniel turned his head as the man groaned and came, shooting his cum all over Daniel’s chest and pants.
“Bastard! You stay away from Darren!”
“Oh, you can yell, if you want,” he taunted as he zipped his pants back up. “No one comes out this way any more, except to cut the grass.”
Daniel struggled a bit more, growling as the rope chaffed his wrists.
“If you behave, I may come back to check on you.”
With that, the double left. Daniel heard the snick of the latch on the door as it closed. He struggled a bit more and then slumped with a groan. He looked up at the monitors, quickly finding the one that showed Darren. He was sleeping restlessly. He looked at the other monitors, and soon saw the double going into his room. The man waved up at the security camera before turning out the light and getting into bed.
Daniel cursed the man and the situation he found himself in as he tried again in vain to get free. Finally he stopped. A lone tear rolled down his cheek and he gasped in surprise. He looked back up at the monitors.
“Darren…” he whispered, before the tears began to fall in earnest.
