Disclaimer: Dir en Grey does not belong to me and I make no profit from writing about them in any way. If I did, Kaoru would me tied to my bed while the others scarfed my food and abused my PS2. And we’d probably live in Las Vegas. All events in this story are provocation and fiction invented in my mind.
How long have I been asleep? The soft breeze awakens me and lifts me to sit up in my bed. It’s soft and white and nearly shining in the dark. Light from the moon illuminates everything for me to see. Where have they sent me? Is this heaven? What happened?
I know I’m not alone. I saw the person who…guards me? Is he protecting me? From myself? Who are you?
--
Kaoru jumped awake as the softest voice whispered out to him in the night. He immediately looked at the risen form of Daisuke, his boyfriend, who had been almost comatose for six months now. The tall man, who was still sitting at the moment, flinched internally when he could see just how thin he had gotten. His slim body was a silhouette in his hospital issue nightgown and Kaoru was sure he saw his rig cage sticking out more than it properly should. “Daisuke…lie down, I’ll call a doctor…I can’t believe your awake!” he exclaimed quietly, excitedly, killing his urge to crush his love to him. He felt that if he did, he’d surely snap him in two. He stood up to leave and was just by the door when Daisuke spoke to him. And crushed his spirit. “Who are you…?”
--
Have I been sleeping…like a prince in one of the books the nurses read me now? The man who protects me is with me always and tells me stories about the prince of Sakura and how he used to be so healthy…
And now he is withering, like the flowers he rules for. Am I prince?
Kaoru says yes, I am. But my kingdom is lost.
Kaoru said that we used to know each other a very long time ago but I can’t remember anything. How did I get here? What happened? He never answers me that.
…I want to remember.
--
“Kaoru…who were you to me?”
“Hm?” the young man looked up from the picture book he and Daisuke were looking at together. He had taken it from the library and hoped it would spark some remembrance in his love’s eyes. After all, it had been her favorite book before the accident. “…I’m…I was…we..” he stuttered, trying to find a way to tell him that he was something he probably couldn’t even grasp the concept of yet. Daisuke cocked his head, waiting. His dark eyes were a glow with curiosity and Kaoru was thankful that that part of him had not disappeared like so much had. “Are you my protector?” the sick man asked, blinking tiredly and covering his mouth with a big hand to yawn. Kaoru sighed and smiled. “Yes..I’m your protector…and I’ll be here for you no matter what.” Daisuke smiled and closed his eyes to sleep. Kaoru’s expression softened until his countenance gave way to his truest feeling; despair.
--
Kaoru…he makes me feel so special sometimes. Like a burst of light or…the scent of the cherry blossom tree outside of my room. Kaoru had the hospital plant it for me and now I think of it as my Kaoru tree. He has to leave me now sometimes and in those times I look to my tree for him. To see if I can find his face in a petal. I asked the nurses to leave the window open for me but they won’t and say I’m too sick.
The doctor says I’m so sick I need to lie down almost all the time. But my mind in flying now and why won’t anyone answer my questions? No one will tell me what happened. Why? Why? Did I do something…
…wrong?
--
Daisuke stared at the ceiling above his head and frowned with an inquisitive look on his face. “The doctor…said try not to remember everything at once but to…remember little details..and piece them together.” he murmured before his eyes drifted close on their own accord and he fell again into deep slumber. But it didn’t feel like sleep…it felt as if he were awake and moving.
He was walking down a busy street and he looked to see Kaoru at his right smiling idly. Daisuke smiled at him and looked ahead again. Some how being with Kaoru made his feelings swell even more so. They climbed into the car they had parked near their home and Daisuke began to pull out of their space when suddenly…
It’s white…tinges of the faintest pink…like the petals of a blossom.
--
“What happened?!” Kaoru shouted to the doctors surrounding his love’s bed. Strong male nurses held him back but he struggled all he could. “Niikura-san, Daisuke-san has suffered a mild seizure and we need to move him to a new room-”
“No! He loves that dammed tree-”
“What’s more important, his health, or a tree?”
“His fucking happiness!” Kaoru spat at the doctor. The nurses loosened their grip and Kaoru burst free and ran to the bedside of his love, who had suffered long enough. “Daisuke…Die….my Die-chan, please! Be better!” he croaked, grasping Daisuke’s thin hand tightly. “Kaoru…protector..” the fading man mumbled, tossing his head to the side. The grieving man’s head shot up and he put his hand to Daisuke’s face. “Yes…Die-chan?” he whispered, knowing somehow…
“I…”
--
I love you.
Why am I…so cold…Kaoru..
Protector…
Protect…
I want…
Love you…
--
Kaoru cried silently as the entire hospital staff and his and Daisuke’s family stood by him as his love’s body was put to rest beneath the cherry blossom tree he had so loved. It was near dusk when he picked himself up lightly, feeling the hollowness in his body and mind taking over. He turned to leave but before he could, a strong wind blew against him and forced him to hold his arms up in defense nearly as petals blew around him in torrents. Kaoru’s eyes widened as he heard the words he’d wanted to hear for so very long come from a faint whisper in his ear.
“I love you…Kaoru…”
