Chapter One
Rolling hills as far as the eyes could see and green it had never seemed to end. The one thing that told the Woman she was not in her own country was the constant rain and the roughness of the landscape. Oh yes it was rough but at the same time it had a beauty that called to her very soul. A romantic at heart she felt at peace here and fell in love with it instantly. “A new beginning” she had spoken aloud drawing curious glances towards her.
The people around her seemed to know that she was different the red hair they had seen a very common thing here. The crystal blue eyes that were void of laughter was something they hadn’t seen. Her frame was not small or large it was somewhere in between and the curves that pushed the limits of her clothing let all who looked know she was a woman for sure. A small waitress made her way over to the table anxious to hear some tale of her homeland since she herself had arrived here in Scotland years ago. She was small compared to the beauty who sat alone in a small booth that allowed her to see the countryside.
Many times Rain had seen beauty, a birth of a child. The love from its mother The Mountains of her home which in certain seasons showed some of the most amazing colors. But never had she seen a land such as this Green rugged and the people were equally beautiful always so warm and friendly they made even her feel like she belonged which had never happened in her life. Being 30 and still never having a lover made her feel quite inadequate maybe she could let her past disappear
Agnes felt saddened by seeing this woman for deep in her eyes was a sadness which many failed to see. Her work as a waitress had brought her very close with various people and she knew how to read emotions better than any shrink. She brought over a diet Pepsi and some fresh fries which here they called chips. Her smile widened hoping to fill the woman with warmth. She slid in across from her and put the plate in front of her, this had been the third night she had come and it had been the first time she had the nerve to come and talk.
Her brown eyes found the crystal blue and held for a moment before speaking.
“So Miss? I brought some chips and your diet drink your always asking for how are you feeling today/”
The woman’s eyes sparkled a bit and she smiled back and softly spoke to her.
“I am feeling much better today its Miss Lancaster, but you can call me Rain.”
“Rain that is a very pretty name ma'am.
“Thank you it was my mother’s name.”
The two stared off in opposite directions. And the elder of the two spoke softly once more.
“I divorced my Husband a month ago and I finally can say that out loud. I feel empty most of the time but being here in my ancestors land I feel peace at last.” The tears welled up into her eyes and she put her head on the booth table and cried for the first time in weeks. She looked up from her tears to face the smaller woman and smiled once more
“It feels better to let it out forgive me.”
“Its fine Rain we all cry and I’m so sorry for that.”
“For years I had wanted to be free of him but now that I am I don’t know what to do. Forgive me for being so frank but my Husband was Gay and we had never shared any intimacy or anything. Call me old fashioned but I never even tried to take on a lover. I think my soul is from old country and I feel that I have more to me than I even know.”
The younger woman grabbed her hands and Agnes and Rain were best of friends Since. Rain had acquired a vast amount of money and lands in Scotland since Her Great grandmother had lived in Scotland as a child. The lands had been in her family for generations and she had become owner of a large farmhouse with many animals and a full staff. She had gained all that her great grandmother owned because of her mother’s death. She never had a reason to come to Scotland but now everything seemed to be just apart of the plan. Now she and her friend were making plans to have the place restored to its former glory.
The two were well into cleaning out half the junk when a tall elderly woman made an entrance and smiled at the two women. Rain stopped her work and walked toward her to offer greetings. The elderly woman grabbed her hand and squeezed and “Welcome lassies I be yew neighbor Ester. This here house needing new owners. Let me be the first to welcome you to town and I hope you don’t be a stranger,my boy should be along shortly to help yew with your progress.”
As fast as she entered her exit was equally fast.
Rain smiled what a cute old lady. As she made her way up to Agnes they began sanding the cabinets when she dropped her sandpaper and had a look of panic and amusement on her face. She motioned to Rain to look at something. She turned her head to see three men with different shades of brown hair. Two were on the short side and one was tall and very built she could not see his face as he had dark shades that covered his eyes but he had a tight t-shirt that showed he took care of himself more than any man she had seen. Her eyes seemed to have a mind of there own as they took in the sight of a very real man. He didn’t walk like George, he didn’t look like George, and wow she was never this much to attracted to anyone including George. Her face grew bright red and her eyes lead down to where she was sure was perfect addition to an already perfect man. Her face already red she knew it would look crimson as it did. She looked away from the man and turned to her friend speaking softly “ I will be back Agnes.”
She got up and left the house and walked up a path. The feeling was almost unknown to her it a feeling mixed with excitement and longing. How long had she hidden it away? She sat in the grass by the small lake that had called to her before. Its peaceful motions making her think back on her first meeting of George.
She had never thought that a man Like George would even be interested in her. He had many women chasing him but she herself never chased anyone. She was content with her life having taken a small Job as a Receptionist. It made her life so easy she rarely went out but did occasionally to a movie or some small event. It wasn’t that she couldn’t have fun she was just nervous of the opposite sex. Her friends for some odd reason were always the very risky types the ones who loved sex and didn’t mind getting into a little mischief at all. But not Rain she had always liked men but her outgoing personality set sail when she found she liked a man. For all her outgoing and comical words she seemed to close off when she was attracted to someone. On a rare night her friends had convinced her to go out and they helped her get all dressed up.
For the first time in years she felt very beautiful. Her dress fitting like a second skin and she felt a little bashful at first but from somewhere she grew the confidence to wear it. It had been olive green. Its length almost touched the floor and it was strapless. Strapless she almost choked when she had first seen it but to her amazement her friend had shown her a bra that would in fact help her keep her twins neatly in place. The emerald earrings she had received from her great grandmother really played a huge part in her dress. She slid into her strappy high heels having no clue what brand cause they were her friends but they were silver and made her look about 3 inches taller as if she needed that.
Three hours into the party she had felt very out of place many of the people were Executives and very powerful business men. She had made her way out the balcony and leaned against the wall as she breathed the night air of Oregon. It was a warm day and hadn’t rained at all. She looked into the sky and watched the stars and planes as both had lights of there own.
Lost in her thoughts she heard a deeply accented voice mumble something not even her understood. She turned to look at the unfamiliar drawl and found herself looking into the eyes of a man which were exactly as hers. He was a beauty of a man long lashes high cheekbones not feminine but male. His blond hair slightly untidy and had ringlets that stopped short right above his eyes. They seemed instantly smitten with each other. And became inseparable. What never seemed to matter to her that he had never kissed her. And to her horror the night of her wedding she finally learned why.
Her wedding was beautiful never had so many people been to anything that had to do with her. Her future husband’s families were well known as Multibillionaires with many different companies throughout the united states. There was nothing they didn’t invest in. As the two set off for their honeymoon they were accompanied by George’s best friend Mario. Who seemed never to allow Her to have private moments with George and when She tried to let George know she wasn’t happy with him always there. He became angry and then left with him.
The night of their wedding had came fast as they had two weeks of bliss in the Bahamas but to her dismay Mario’s room was strangely connected to their own.
She had picked the perfect red negligee and had her hair arranged so that she looked like a goddess. She had been very excited because all through the engagement she had tried to share something intimate with him and he had always told her his morals would never let that happen. As she lay on the bed of pure silk carefully selected by her. She waited for about an hour and he finally entered. And Mario was there with his arm linked in his. Her mind screamed at her to realize something was wrong but her heart just told her that they were just close. As she looked at George he had a look of amusement and held a stack of papers.
His words would forever crush her. “Hello my wife, well aren’t we pretty. Well as innocent as you are I guess all my interests in you never fully entered your mind. I guess it is now time I discuss our relationship as husband and wife.”
As if the nightmare wasn’t bad enough in came a lawyer and a witness as her life and future were read to her. It was to be a loveless marriage he only did it because his father would never allow him to take over the fortune without him being married. His father wasn’t expected to live long and when his health failed him the marriage was automatically dissolved and She was to receive nothing ,she would leave with whatever she brought in. Rain hurriedly sign the papers because she wasn’t about to let him or his staff see her heartbreak. After they all left he stood before Rain and introduced her to his real partner and told Rain when his father died they would be together in front of the whole world.
It took 11 yrs for his father to die and her life was filled with lies and deceit. As he took her to every social event as a trophy kissing her lightly on the mouth and touching her, but all the while his eyes showed disgust. For all of her beauty this man made her feel ugly. Small chirping sounds made her come out of her memory as a duck and her ducklings made their way to the lake. The smallest of the family fell several times and with no help or encouragement from its mother it got up and fell in line behind the others. That’s what she had to do not let others decide her fate or life but to actually do it on her own. She started to get up when she heard a familiar giggle and a man’s laughter right after. She looked around and spotted Agnes with the man that had awoke so many feelings. Feeling very vunerable she looked for a way to not see them.
It was painful to watch but yet her fondness for the small woman overruns her small feelings for the man she hadn’t even met. She watched as the man with all of his confidence whispered in Agnes’s ear. As he held her hand in a gentle way. As if by some unknown force His eyes found hers just a short distance away and it sent her soul on fire.
He was rugged and unshaven his face having distinct features. It was very sexy how he seemed to see right through her. His eyes held hers for what seemed like an eternity but only mere seconds as his attention went back to Agnes.
Never in all Rain’s life had she felt faint but at that moment everything that had been long dead came rushing up to tell her that her body felt otherwise. She lost her strength and found a large tree to lean against away from them. His eyes what color where they green or blue or perhaps even a mixture of both. There was defiantly kindness in those eyes and then something else, something that told her this man could and would get any woman he wanted. Her mind was mush and for the life of her she could not figure out what had brought her here in the first place. She began walking toward the large farmhouse when her friends Voice came from behind.
“Rain come here. I would like you to meet James McDougal.”
Rain almost choked but found strength to turn around and smile. Her mind screamed at her; Please god don’t let them notice how I tremble and for once don’t let me feel too much for him.
She smiled but all the while her heart pounded in her ears could they hear it. (My god it was loud enough she prayed for her to be able to get through this and not hurt her friend.)
She walked towards them and the man's eyes which bore into hers the colors of green and blue both balancing each other. HE spoke in a soft burr.“So this is Rain how nice to meet you. I am your neighbor and My Mother speaks highly of your family. Although no one ever mentioned how lovely you are.” His eyes searched hers for something and they brightened after seeing her blush softly.
“Oh(she felt her voice tremble) thank you but I feel that I have been playing in the mud. So much is to be done here I don’t even know where to begin.” She felt relieved she could shift their conversation into things that would take her mind off how gorgeous he was. She looked at her hands and didn’t dare to meet his eyes again.
She then looked up to see him staring at Agnes and Agnes staring at her.
Had she seen what she had felt surely not?
Suddenly Agnes spoke “James could you excuse us for a moment.”
He smiled and waved his hand “Sure but don’t be talking of me behind me back.”
They walked away from him enough for him not to hear. Her friend seemed very anxious and excited.
“So Rain what you think, I was asked by his younger brother but I feel he is the one for me.”
“Wwhat .” Rain stuttered which was something she had never done.
“Come on Rain don’t be silly you know they are having a big annual party over at the pubin a few weeks. He is going to be my date.”
“Isn’t he a bit old for you?”
“Rain I’m not a baby I’ll be 19 in July I don’t think he is that old why he said he is only 36. That’s only 6 years older than you.”
Rain felt like a hag since no man would ever find a 30 year old divorcee appealing especially a handsome Scot who found a pretty little blonde to entertain himself with.
She smiled at her friend and Agnes hugged her tight.
“Besides Rain it isn’t as if we are getting married. I’m hoping to share some drinks and maybe find what Scots have packing in their kilts.”
Rain gasped at her language and felt like a complete idiot . Agnes give her a strange look. She was hoping she would not say anything.
“You should talk with James for awhile I’m going home for a bit to get my stuff so we can have that all night movie fest.”
Agnes walked to James and placed her hand on his and kissed his cheek. He smiled at her as she walked away. Rain felt nervous as his tall frame started to walk toward her.
“You know there is something you remind me of standing there.”
She gulped at his words.
He laughed and smiled showing his beautiful smile.
“I know a few animals that seem to freeze when a male of the same species gets too close. I assure you Rain I am harmless unless provoked.”
Her cheeks colored again and his eyes sparkled again.
Suddenly without warning She spoke her mind which when nervous always happened.
“I am sorry years of being with someone who never loved you have made me emotionally unstable I feel very vulnerable around any man. Especially since he preferred men to me.”
She threw her hand to her mouth, she felt ill.
Why had she told him. she felt like she could die, as the shock of his face and eyes met her own? Rain felt tears on her cheeks as she sank to her knees by his feet.
Why did she care what him or anyone thought she was broken and nothing or none could change that could they?
The man before her stood motionless and then dropped to his knees in front of her. His eyes full of sadness like he knew her feelings.
“Don’t ever let anyone tell you this was your fault some people in this world cannot really see beauty all they see is themselves. The selfishness is more common than to love. I look at you now and tell you that you are without a doubt the most beautiful creature I have ever seen.
At that his large hand came under her small chin and tilted it up as he took a corner of his shirt to wipe away the tears.
“I can promise you that you have a friend in me and it will not hurt forever.”
She smiled weakly at him and he threw his big arms around her as he crushed her to him.
She forgot all her troubles and inhaled his scent sandlewood, spice and some other heavenly scent. He felt good like nothing could harm her in his arms.
He stared into her eyes and she knew he would be a person she could always depend on.
He smiled and spoke softly “although it pains me to let you go I have a date with your friend and I don’t want her to think me a scoundrel. But I do not lie when I say Id rather be here to help you.”
The easiness of his words allowed her to laugh as she spoke.”Scandoulous I don’t think I could do anything to ruin your reputation.”
“Hmm, He laughed, It wasn’t you that I was referring too.”
