Chapter 1
xx Skylar
I remember when I walked into the room on my twenty-six birthday. It was a moment in which I'll never forget, not now, not ever. It had led me to you and for that I'll always be grateful.
I remember when my mother led me into the room. The lights flickered on and I was greeted by a thunderous chorus of "SURPRISE!" Excited yet totally stunned, I began scanning the room and I was very happy to find many of my friends from the Street Team which was the best gift ever. As my mom pinned that stupid birthday girl pin on my shirt I remember Maggie coming over to me, wrapping her arms around me, and proceeding to tell me to shut my eyes; covering them with her bare hands. My surprise was waiting for me.
I remember her walking behind me, leading me somewhere. As her hands left my face she instructed me to open my eyes. I nearly fainted when I saw you and the rest of the gang standing there ready to give me my own private show. I remember what you said into the microphone as I stared up at you. It was like a magnet. I was drawn to you, enchanted by your emerald eyes. I couldn't look away even if I wanted to. And I wanted to believe you felt what I was feeling too.
"This is for Skylar. Happy birthday beautiful," and I swear you winked at me.
It was then you launched into In the Shadows. I remember being right in front of you the entire time. I remember you reached out and grabbed my hand a couple of times. You made my knees weak and my heart skip beats, do you know that? I don't think you knew what you did to me.
"I think it's about the time where we serenade the birthday girl," you say into the microphone. "Come up here sweetheart," you instruct as you hold your hand out for me to take. Hauling me on the stage with you, you set up a stool for me to sit on and still holding my hand, you lower me to sit.
Letting go of my hand you look back out into the crowd and smile at your adoring audience. The music picks up and I am stunned as I recognize the tempo. I swear I turned into a pool of jelly at your feet.
"Tonight we escape…just you and me…we'll find our peace, somewhere across the seas…" you sing.
By the time you hit the chorus, you turn to look at me. And I remember you didn't just look at me…you looked at me. "I'll take the shot for you…I'll be the shield for you…needless to say, I'll stand in your way…"
It was all I could do to think that you were meaning every word. That you would take me away into your arms and protect me like you said in the song. That you loved me and only me. But how naïve was I to believe you'd fall for an ordinary girl like me? Besides, you had stated in past interviews that you had been hurt too much to love anytime soon and that you're heart was with the band. It was stupid of me to think that I could change you, because I knew you were untamable, that you were a partier and someone who loved to booze and smoke too much. And our worlds clashed horribly. I was more of a homebody and the type of girl ready to be a wife to someone. There was no future and it was then that it had finally occurred to me of that fact. Even as you sang to me and looked me in my eyes I wanted so much to believe that you cared for me, that you felt something for me.
"Happy birthday Sky," Maggie came up to me wrapping her arms around me into a warm embrace.
"Thank you," I whispered into her ear. "How did you pull this off?" She smiled and looked at me.
"That's our little secret," she replied. "But Jen maybe could've pulled a few strings and put in a word…" she trailed off. I nodded.
"Speaking of, she said she wouldn't miss my birthday for anything…is she here?" I asked.
"Turn around," I heard someone say.
"Oh my gosh! Jen!" I shout as we embrace for the first time. "Finally we meet."
"Isn't it exciting? I told you I would be here," she replied. "But…I have someone who wants to meet you," she said with a wink to Maggie. She grabbed my arm and pulled me away from my State Leader.

When I saw you being escorted to the center of the room my heart skipped a beat, did you know that? You were just an ordinary girl, but somehow there was something about the way you carried yourself that I liked. When Maggie removed her hands from your face and when I saw the happy smile appear, you stole a piece of my heart.
During the set I thought to myself how beautiful you were and how much I wanted to get to know you. You were free, you know that? Always free to be yourself and to do the things that made you feel normal. I loved watching you thrash your hair around as you danced to my music. When you dance you go into another realm. It was so sensual watching you move your body, swaying your hips, and throwing your hands in the air in time with the beat. You made the blood in my body pulsate when you danced. I could feel heat rising and I wanted nothing more than to be behind you, holding your slender waist as you moved your body against mine.
I wanted to sing you a special song. I picked a song that would describe the way I was feeling for you, hoping you'd read between the lines. I think you did.
As I pulled you onstage I held your hand longer than I should've, but I didn't care. I wanted to touch you and I wanted to look into your sparkling eyes. Singing Shot, I let my emotions seep through me and as I sang, "I won't let him touch you…I love you," I stared into your eyes trying to send you messages.
I was waiting for you by the bar. I was happy when I saw Jen leading you through the mass of bodies heading for me. I had told Jen that I personally wanted to meet you and to have some alone time with you. Jen practically pushed you into me, winked, and walked off.
"Hi," I said.
"Hi," you said meekly. You reminded me so much of myself when it came down to meeting people. Shy, but then so outgoing once you felt comfortable. "Thanks for coming. I had no idea but I was hoping to see you for my birthday," you say.
"I'm glad you're happy. It's our pleasure to do something nice for a fan. We really wanted to do it once we found out you were a Region Leader for our street team," I told you.
"I was so disappointed when I couldn't make it to the Lancaster show," you told me. "I had a wedding to be in and it wouldn't have looked right if I had ditched it," you laughed. "But the phone calls you and the guys left me for the Fort Worth show was something I had saved on my cell phone for a few months."
I smiled at you then. With you, it was always the little things that touched your heart. You made life so simple, so uncomplicated. I envied you and your whit and dry humor. I looked up to you, believe it or not.
You order a soda and as you seat yourself on the barstool next to me the waiter hands your glass to you. Wrapping your long, delicate fingers around the glass, you look over at me and give me a heartwarming smile. Pushing a strand of hair behind your ear you give me a nervous chuckle and take a sip of your drink.
You had me from that night.
