Chapter 1:
I could stay awake, just to hear you breathing…
Watch you smile while you are sleeping…
While you’re far away and dreaming.
-Aerosmith
Benji’s Pov
The day had started off normal enough. All of us in GC and the members of MEST were hanging out at Paul’s house, enjoying one another’s company before GC went out on tour. Joel and Paul were playing Soul Caliber II on Paul’s PS2 while Chris, Tony, Jere, and Nick were watching, each shouting out advice. Billy and Matt were standing in the kitchen having what looked from where I was sitting, a heated argument. They seemed to be doing that a lot since MEST had gotten back from Warped.
I shake my head and watch as Billy throws his hands up as Matt turns around and walks over to where the others are at. I continue to watch as Billy grabs his Level 27 hoodie and leaves, knowing that he was headed to the house that he shares with Joel and I. I know by his expression that he’s upset, but shrug it off, going back to writing the lyrics that have been stuck in my head.
I sit there for another hour, reduced to drawing random lewd stick figures before I get bored and decide to head home myself. I gather up my stuff and, after pegging Joel in the back of the head with one of my crumpled up pieces of paper, walk out and get into my car.
Once there, I reach under the passenger seat and pull out my cd case. Flipping through the countless pages, I find myself stopping at the Silverchair cd that Billy had left in my car. Shrugging, I put it in the player. Pulling out a cigarette and lighting it, I pulled out of the driveway.
I take the long way home, enjoying the alone time that it granted me. I watched the trees as I passed them, their leaves just starting to show the colors that they were going to change in the up coming fall.
I smile slightly when I reach home and see Billy’s car in the driveway. I park next to it and after pulling his cd out of my player, head up to the small two story house.
Opening the front door, I call out for Billy. Not getting an answer I assume that he’s upstairs taking a nap. I throw my keys on the table by the door and after kicking off my shoes, walk into the front room. I take off my hoodie and lay it on the couch when I pass into the living room. I sit down for a moment but the silence of the house soon gets to me. I decide that I’d go up and wake Billy and see if he’d want to go do anything.
Once I’m on the landing, I start to head toward his room, passing the bathroom as I go. I hear movement in there and turn to investigate. I try the door only to find it locked.
“Billy? You in there?” I hear something shuffle around then nothing.
“Billy?”
“Go away Benji.” His voice is quiet, somewhat strained, his tone sending up all sorts of red flags in my head.
Grabbing my ID, I slide it into the space between the door and the jam, listening to hear the little click. I push open the door and find him there, his back to me. I watch his arms move and hear him hiss.
“Billy?” He turns around quickly, dropping what was in his hand. It made a dull clinking noise as it hit the floor. I look down and see it was a bloody razor. He tries to hide his left arm behind his back but I grab his wrist before he can. I turn it so I can see what he’s done. He’s cut so many little lines into his arm, they go from his wrist to his forearm, each one still oozing blood.
I look up into his eyes, eyes that used to be so bright and full of life that now reflect the pain and utter defeat that seemed to radiate off of him in waves. Sighing, I let go of him and turn to the linen closet, grabbing a rag. I turn again to fill the sink with warm water.
Dipping the rag in the water, I wring it out and hand it to him, telling him to clean at least some of the blood off. I pull the first aid kit out and retrieve the gauze.
He keeps his head down, almost as if he was afraid to look at me while I wrap the gauze over his arm, making it easy for him to hide it from the world. When I’m done, I put everything away and take the rag from him, throwing it in the bottom of the clothes hamper. I let the water out of the sink, watching as it swirled down the drain. I look at him one last time, taking in the hopelessness that was written plainly on his face, before walking out of the bathroom and across the hall into my room. I close the door behind me and lean against it.
*~~***~~*
How do you think, I’ve lost so much…
I’m so afraid…
I’m outta touch…
How do you expect, I will know what to do…
When all I know, is what you tell me to.

Billy’s Pov
I watched as he turned from me and went into his room. It was the look on his face as he was leaving that really seemed to get to me through the haze of despair that had been clouding my mind. I know that he’s disappointed in me, that one look said it all. When I’d gotten home, I hadn’t expected that anyone would have found out. I didn’t expect that he’d been home so soon.
Sighing, I sit down on the edge of the bathtub. I toy with the ring that Matt had bought me for our anniversary that seemed oh so very long ago. I pull it off and in a rage, throw it at the door. When it doesn’t make a sound, I look up and see Benji standing in the doorway holding it, after he’d caught it.
“Come on.” He says it quietly but I don’t move. I hear him move and feel him grab my hands, pulling me up and forcing me out of the bathroom. When we get to his room, he opens the door and pulls me inside.
I move immediately to the bed that has been pushed up against the wall. I sit with my back against the wall, pulling my knees up to my chest and wrap my arms around them. I rest my head on my arms. He sits down after bringing his desk chair to the front of the bed. We sit in silence, each gathering our thoughts.
“Why?” His quiet question breaks through the walls that I’d been building. I look up at him, not ashamed to let him see the tears in my eyes.
“Why?”
“Yes I want to know why you would do this again, especially after you promised me you wouldn’t.” I laugh humorlessly at how innocent he really was. The bad ass image he portrays for the public is just that, an image.
“You really want to know why?”
“Yes Billy, now cut the bull shit.”
I shake my head and smirk slightly, though none of this is funny.
“You try having the one person that you've trusted above anyone else tell you that he’s suspected you of cheating on him with your best friend. Then find out that he was really the one who was cheating but find out it was with a chick!” His mouth is hanging open at my sudden outburst of rage and hurt. I know that I’ve shocked him, but I really don’t think that he caught on to the one point that I’d wanted him to.
“So that justifies your cutting?” Might I add that my dearest friend is sometimes a little slow.
“If that doesn’t then I don’t know what does.” I spit back angrily.
“But what’s better about this is that he told me that she was a better fuck.” And now that I’ve gotten this out into the open, there’s no stopping the tears that are sliding down my cheeks. I feel the bed move and fell his arms wrap around me, his body heat comforting me even more than the sweet nothings that he was whispering in my ear. I look up at him, thinking the he really is too innocent for his own good. I shake my head and turn it into his chest, thanking the gods that he was here as the sobs overtook me. He held me the whole time, not caring about the tears that were soaking his shirt.
