I sat looking at my computer screen. I knew that I needed to work but the cold snow outside seemed to beckon me. I loved to play in the snow. It would bring me back to the days of being a little girl running through snow drifts and building forts with family and friends. As I stared outside, I began to wonder what he was doing. It had been about a month since I last saw him. We left it very plutonic between us … “friends with perks” I joked the last time we were together. He would say that the cabin was his refuge from the “real world.” No cameras, no crabby girlfriends, or questions to be answered. He enjoyed the peace and solitude. I came to enjoy his company also. When he returned to the sunny beaches of the California, I missed our late night talks and cuddling with him on the coldest of nights.
After struggling for about an hour, I decided that work was not going to happen. I piled on the warmest clothes I could find, which included my jeans, sweatshirt, and his jacket that he left behind. I opened the door and the wind hit my face. The cold burned my nose but also excited me. The snow was perfect, no footprints or car tracks to ruin the beauty. I walked around the outside of my yard until I came to a large drift. I swung my body around and fell deep into the packed snow. I felt the dampness of the snow seep into my skin. I also heard a snicker from the trees that caught me attention.
“Isn’t that cold, baby?” I turned around to see those green eyes that went with that voice. I jumped up from my snow refuge and flung my snowy arms around his neck. “Why didn’t you tell me you were coming, Orlando? How long are you staying? Gosh, I missed you.” I hugged his neck with all my might. He returned the embrace with the same intensity. He laughed hysterically as he pulled back from me. “Can we have the interrogation inside the cabin? I am freezing.” With all the excitement, I did not notice that he was wearing a light sweater and I was wearing his jacket. “Oh, Orlando! Let’s get you inside. You really should be wearing a jacket.” I smirked. We walked to the cabin arm in arm.
When we got inside, Orlando went straight to the fireplace and rubbed his cold arms and hands. I took off his jacket as I grabbed a blanket. I placed the blanket over his shoulders. “Thanks love. I needed that.” He said. I noticed sadness in his eyes. I never had seen this look before with him. “What is it, Orlando? What is wrong?” He sat down next to the fire. I sat right in front of him with a questioning stare. He lowered his head as his hand came up to run through his wind blown hair. He looked tired, more like worn out. I lightly touched his fire warm skin. “Orlando?” I whispered. He grabbed my hand and held it softly in his. He played with the rings as a sigh escaped his lips.
After several minutes of us just sitting there next to the roaring fire, he spoke. “I just needed you that is all. Can we talk about this later? I am so tired.” I squeezed his hand and met his eyes. “Let’s watch a movie, Orlando. I’ll get the popcorn. You pick something out.” I got up and went to the kitchen. What was wrong with him? He looked so tired. I came back to the living room to see Orlando sitting on the couch with his eyes closed. I knew the movie wouldn’t be on for long. I sat next to him on the inviting couch. I laid a pillow on my lap, which was Orlando, knew was an open invitation to lay his head down. Brown locks colored the white pillow. He hugged my legs and closed his eyes. I stroked his head softly. He sighed quietly with every touch. “Dani? What is it between us?” I stopped mid-stroke. What was he asking? Aren’t we just friends? Isn’t that what he wanted?
“Friends, Orlando. Best friends.” I felt my heart break as I said those words. I did not want to be just friends, but he was taken and that is how he wanted it. He turned over until he laid face up. His eyes looked deep into my blue orbs. He seemed to be looking for something … the answer to the question he hadn’t asked yet. “Is that all, Dani?” I searched his eyes for the way to proceed with this conversation. I decided that I should just let my heart lead the way. “Orlando, we talked about this months ago. You decided that we should just be friends. “He raised his arm as his hand softly caressed my cheek. “Is that what you wanted?” At that moment, I felt my heart beat fiercely. My heart was telling me to just lean down and kiss him. Unfortunately, my head was ruling right now and the picture of the girlfriend came into my head.
I pushed him off my lap as I got up from the couch. “We can’t do this, Orlando, and you know it. What about her?” He walked over to me and turned me to face him. He reached up to push a strand of hair out of my eyes. “I have done a lot of thinking lately and made a lot of changes. I am miserable without my best friend.” He lifted my chin so our eyes melted with each other. “I missed you, Dani. “He smiled, “What if I said I don’t want to be just friends anymore?” I looked up at him. I must have been dreaming. “What did you say, Orlando?” He pulled me into a tight embrace, “I am ending our friendship.” His lips lightly grazed mine. It had a feeling of uncertainty at first … like he was waiting to see what I would do. I opened my mouth to his waiting tongue and gave myself heart and soul to him. We stood there making out like teenagers as the snow began to fall again outside.
After several minutes of heated kisses and wandering hands, we pulled apart. I could not believe that he was mine … finally mine. I giggled quietly as he kissed my neck. “So, does this mean, I have to give you back your jacket?” Orlando met my questioning eyes with an infamous Orlando Bloom smirk. “No, it should stay here since I will be spending a lot more time in this cabin from now on. “ I pulled out of his embrace and ran outside. “Oh really, who says your invited to stay?” He picked up a ball of snow with a threatening glance. “Don’t make me use this …”
