In the beginning it was for comfort.For getting through the rough nights alone.Their parents fought always,not physically but the mental instability cut both boys like a knife.Towards the end,the blood started to leak as one turned to harming himself to deal with the imagined guilt he felt for not being a better son.The other boy was always there with hugs,murmurs of comfort and gauze.The Hello Kitty band-aids he stole from the CVS down the street made his older brother smile,albeit briefly.The younger cherished these,for they became fewer as the days rolled on.

When the older sibling turned 18,he got himself an apartment,taking his 16 year old brother with him.Their parents didn’t care;the boys’ absence meant more money to spend on booze and other bad habits.The boys dealt with that as best they could,and moved on with their lives.

Now it was five years later,and that bond they had as teens never diminished.In fact it only got stronger as the years went by.They dated occasionally,both men and women,but they never could feel with outsiders what they had together.
Which brought Mikey to do something nice for Gerard.
Mikey was a natural born cook.Gerard,his older brother,was a vegan by choice.He liked the taste of meat-could be a sucker for a medium rare steak-but he decided to give his body a break and eat healthy foods.He knew eventually he would go back to his old ways,but for now this is what his body needed,craved.And Mikey learned to cook vegan.Omelets were his specialty,but tonight he didn’t want to cook a boring omelet.Tonight was special to Mikey and he hoped Gerard would remember.

It was the fifth anniversary of the boys’ moving in together.

Mikey couldn’t wait for Gerard to come home.He had been working on an awesome meal for his brother:a cheese and vegetable lasagna with a killer marinara sauce,marinated green beans and fresh Italian garlic bread.For dessert Mikey made a carrot cake from scratch with cream cheese frosting.He tried to make the little carrots on top like the stores had,but they came out looking more like deformed pumpkins than carrots.No matter;Mikey knew that Gerard would appreciate everything he did.

The front door slammed and Gerard came in,smiling with one hand behind his back.”Hey Mikey,”he said,leaning down to give his brother a quick kiss on the cheek.Gerard pulled Mikey in a tight embrace,placing a long kiss on Mikey’s awaiting lips.Gerard nudged them gently,the tip of his tongue touching Mikey’s.Mikey groaned deep in his throat as Gerard broke the kiss.He swept his arm from around his back and presented Mikey with a dozen white roses.Nestled in the middle of the bouquet was one blood red rose.The red rose was a symbol of the love between the two brothers,the red representing the blood shed when the boys were still at home.The crimson petals symbolized the blood that ran through their veins,their kinship stronger than any love they could find with anyone else.Mikey took the roses from Gerard and breathed in their scent.Roses were his favorites.He was so glad that Gerard remembered.

”I’m gonna put these in water,”Mikey said quietly as he turned towards the sink.As he filled a vase with water,he felt Gerard’s arms snake around his waist.Gerard rested his chin on Mikey’s shoulder.”Happy Anniversary babe,”he whispered into Mikey’s ear.He kissed Mikey again on the cheek and reached over to get the dinner dishes.Mikey opened the oven and took the lasagna out and placed it on the counter.Gerard grabbed a potholder and took the garlic bread out of the oven.”Could you grab the green beans out of the fridge?”Mikey asked as Gerard headed towards its general direction.”Yep hun,I’m getting drinks anyways.”Gerard took out the bowl of vegetables and grabbed a Coke for himself and a Mountain Dew for Mikey.Ever since Gerard quit drinking two years before,Mikey made sure there was never any alcohol at all in the house.They sat down to dinner,each making small talk about their day.Gerard worked as an engineer in an independent sound studio,while Mikey stayed home and took care of the house.He was prone to anxiety attacks,which went along with his bi-polar disorder.He never knew what days would be good or bad,so they both decided that it would be best if Mikey stayed home.Gerard made more than enough to take care of both of them.Mikey enjoyed playing the ’wife’ role in their relationship.He felt like he was born to be Gerard’s ’baby’.

Dinner was over;carrot cake was being served.Each bite was delicious,and Gerard loved the pseudo carrots/pumpkins that decorated the frosting.Both men had coffee,lingering while they talked about different things;the band currently working with Gerard at the studio,gossip about the people at the local gas station/hangout,Mikey’s latest song he wrote while watching Fuse Tv.They took their coffee into the living room,cuddling on the couch while watching House MD.
