Ville woke up in the dark. It was very dark. So dark he could not see the fingers he waved in front of what he guessed to be his face. His head hurt vaguely and he thought maybe he’d drunk himself blind last night. He had quite a bit to drink. Maybe more than quite a bit.
A muffled curse sent him scrambling into a sitting position, “Hello?” he whispered tentatively.
There was a gasp, “Ville? Is that you?”
“Burton?”
“Yes! What the fuck is going on?” he whispered, Ville could hear his band mate coming closer.
“I don’t know mate.” He held a hand out in the general direction Burton’s voice was coming from.
“Keep talking, I’m coming over there.”
“Alright. Do you remember anything that happened last night, because I was so pissed, I don’t have a fucking clue?”
“No, I-fuck!” he cursed again and he nearly fell over something.
The something groaned, “What happened?”
“Lilly?” Burton gasped.
“What’s going on?” Ville whispered harshly.
“I just found Lilly.” Burton said, “Come over here Ville.”
“Alright.” He crawled along the floor until he found them and huddled up with his friends, “Do you think Gas and Migé are in here too?”
“Migé is.” They heard from a far off corner.
“Migé, come over here.” Burton called in that direction, “Gas?”
They all screamed when Gas spoke next to them, “I’m here. Don’t shout.”
“Migé?” Ville whispered, “Where are you?”
“Coming.” A moment later, they gently bumped hands.
“Hello.” Ville said softly.
“So we’re in a very darkroom.” Gas said matter of factly.
“It would seem so.” Ville reached in his pocket and pulled out his cigarettes, lighting one.
“You git!” Migé pushed his shoulder, “You’ve had a lighter this whole time?”
“Sorry.” Ville felt his face grow hot, “I wasn’t thinking about it.”
“I guess it’s not your fault.” He said to the orange glow of Ville’s cigarette.
“Well light it and let’s have a look.” Lilly said.
Ville took it back out of his pocket and lit it, desperately trying to remember how old the cheap plastic lighter was.
They looked about themselves. Almost as one, they stood. The room wasn’t nearly as big as they had thought. They were disoriented by the stage set up in one corner, complete with monitors.
“The fuck?” Migé asked, and swept his HIM logo emblazoned beanie off.
Burton was the first to walk to the stage. He ran his finger down the keyboard and tested a few keys. Sound came out of the amps, “This is a lovely instrument.”
Ville cursed as the lighter got too hot and burned his hand. It went clattering to the floor.
Suddenly the lights flashed on. The men blinked owlishly in the harsh light cast by what seemed like a million high watt bulbs. They discovered that the room was indeed a lot smaller than they though it was there was barely room enough for them to lie down with the instruments. The walls were made of glass and all they could see were their own reflections staring back at them, nothing of the world beyond.
Ville walked up to the glass and put his hands over his eyes, “Hello?” there was no response and all he could see was darkness. He tapped on the glass again, “Is there anybody there?”
The rest of the band joined him, pounding on the glass and calling out.
An intercom buzzed somewhere and a female voice flooded the room, “There’s plenty of food and water in the fridge behind the amp.” The lights clicked off and they were once again plunged into darkness.
Ville thought he saw a vague silhouette of a door opening, but his eyes were dazzled, so he wasn’t sure. Instead he pulled out his lighter and went to the amps, finding the promised fridge stocked with food, water and booze. He turned to the other guys and shrugged, “It’s here.”
“That’s nice.” Gas said sarcastically. Who was that bitch and why is she keeping us in this fucking box?”
“More importantly, what the fuck is in the food? Like we’re going to trust some disembodied voice?” Lilly put in angrily.
They sat with their backs to the wall, fuming.
It was impossible to tell how much time had passed, but Ville began to grow bored. Lighting the lighter, he went to the equipment and picked up the guitar, playing a few notes, vaguely surprised that it was in tune. He strummed a few chords for a song he’d been kicking around in his head, humming the words under his breath.
“How can you sit there and play guitar at a time like this?” Migé yelled.
“Can you think of anything better to do?” he said, raising his eyebrows, though he knew the other man couldn’t see him.
“How about coming up with a way to escape?”
“In the dark? Into, as far as we can tell another room, god knows where into god knows what?”
“We should at least try!” Gas got up and began feeling his way along the walls, trying to find a weak point.
They others joined him. Ville put down the guitar and contributed to the search.
At last, exhausted, they gave up, having found nothing. The glass was seamless and they could not reach the ceiling.
“What now?” Burton asked.
“I don’t know.” Ville hung his head and lit the last cigarette in his pack.
Somehow, they fell asleep, resting against each other like soldiers in the trenches.
Ville woke up to the sound of someone crying softly. Determining that it wasn’t coming from his comrades, he felt his way along the wall until he thought he located the source of the weeping, “Hello?” he said softly.
The person crying made a startled noise and he heard someone scrambling against the glass, as if standing. This time he was sure he saw the silhouette of a door and a skinny person slipping through it. Puzzled, he sat where he was and waited, unable to fall back asleep.
