"Willa...baby, I have to...." Bam whispered, barley able to hide the emotions that were desperate to pour from his body. "If I don't, I'll go to jail..." Jail, for a man turning down a draft to the US army, was a death sentence. Men and women alike murdered in their cells for betraying their country.
"But....but...Bammie...." But Ville couldn't protest. If Bam didn't go to Iraq, he would go to jail. No matter what, he was losing his Bammie, his husband, and he may not get him back. The two men collapsed into each others arms in a mix of raw emotions and unconditional love. The pain between them seemingly spreading throughout their home, it seemed darker somehow, colder...even the weather had gone bad, rain and storm clouds replacing the peaceful and pleasant sunshine of the past few weeks, mirroring the replacement of happiness and hope in the live's of the embracing men.
Not even two weeks could pass before Bam had to go. A fierce looking car pulling up before dawn on the morning of Bams departure, awaking the men to the realization that they could lose each other, that they might neve be together again.
"Bammie, I have your heart...remember that. Don't let the reaper take it from me...." Ville whispered into his lovers ear as they hugged goodbye. Bam simply nodded, sniffed, allowing two silent tears to fall from his red, blood shot eyes...they had promised each other they wouldn't cry.
"I love you Ville," He replied, kissing the Finn briefly on the lips, planting something in his hand at the same time. A simple glance from Ville brought on the forbidden tears from both himself, and his American lover. It was a glass heart on a silver chain, inside of which, was a piece of Bam's hair. "I'll never truelly leave you..." Bam whispered, breaking free of the older man, heading towards the awaiting car. Ville panicked, he had to give something to Bam too, to give him hope, to remind him he was loved...
"Bam wait!" He cried, grabbing the skaters hand. Bam turned and forced a smile.
"Willa, I have to..." But Ville simply pushed a finger to his lips, kissed them briefly, repeating Bams action of pressing something into his hand at the same time. It was the necklace Bam had given him on their first anniversary. Bam held it tight, gave a small nod, allowing Ville to kiss him one last time as he fought back the tears.
"We'll never be apart, at least, not in our hearts," Ville whispered. "I love you Bam..."
"I love you too Ville...." And with those final words, Bam clambered into the waiting car, which drove off in seconds. While Bam started out of the window, numb with pain and despair, Ville collapsed to the floor in tears, curled up, and let his grief spill out for all to see.
Bam walked along, alone and afraid, on a deserted road in Basra. He had no idea what had happened to his comrades, or where the enemy was, all he knew was that he had to survive, because Ville had his heart, and was waiting for him to return. With just 1 week left till he could go home, Bam continued walking, his mind on one thing...
Ville felt something, he wasn't sure what it was, but it was something. And it hurt...loneliness, fear, anticipation, for some unknown reason, flowed through his body and he couldn't help but sit down and hold his head in his hands in confusion.
A crash. Bam had heard it, but in the dead of night, he saw nothing. His eyes darted round frantically, trying in vain to see where the noise had come from, but nothing...
Villes heart was pounding, faster and faster, so much so he felt like it would burst....but why?
Pain. It shot through Bam with the speed of light, spreading throughout his body from the tips of his toes to his ears... Warmth washed over him...blood, his own. More pain. Confusion. Bam didn't know what had hit him or where, but the pain was constant, everywhere...
Ville screamed. He felt something again. Pain, a pain so deep and so terrible he thought he would die. It started at his heart and spread through the rest of his body. Warmth spreading with it, creating the feeling blood would if it where on his skin...but there was nothing there.
Bam looked up, and there he was. The grim reaper, cloaked in black, it reached out and plunged a dead like hand into his chest, taking his heart. It was then, as he fell to the floor, that Bam realized where the pain was coming from. The bullet wound in his chest. Looking up again, he saw the reaper holding his heart...
Bam was gone, and Ville knew it. The pain had stopped, the warm touch of blood gone, and with it, the feeling of Bams heart connected with his own. His Bammie was dead, and all Ville could do was lie on the floor. He could not cry, could not move, could not function. His grief was so intense he just stopped...
I regret to inform you....
But Ville didn't need to read the letter to see the words. His Bammie was dead, gone, and the letter only confirmed it. Yet still, Ville was unable to cry for his lost love, still he was unable to let his grief known. He was numb. Sinking to the floor, he hugged his knees and just stared...at what, he did not know, all that mattered was that Bam was gone.
Hours past before Ville moved, standing to go to the bathroom. But, as he did so, something appeared in front of him. Bam. Although not solid, he was not ghost like either. But there he was, standing in front of Ville, a smile playing on his lips, Ville's necklace round his neck...
"Bammie..." Ville whispered, reaching out to touch him. But his hand sailed through.
"Willa...its ok, I've come to pass on a message..." Bam whispered, stroking Ville's cheek. Again, his hand sailed through, but Ville felt his touch, felt Bams warm, soft fingers. He smiled, tilted his head, and placed his fingers where Bams were meant to be.
"For me?" He asked, hope filling his voice. Bam smiled and nodded.
"For you Baby," He said. Slowly, he took of the necklace that hung from his neck, kissed if, and passed it to Ville. Ville took it, shocked to find that it was real, solid, just like when he gave it to Bam, but with one difference, it glowed, with love, with warmth....it reminded him of Bams love for him, of his love. "The reaper may have stolen my heart Ville, but it truly belongs to you. No matter what, I'll always be here with you, wither you can see me or not. We'll never be apart, at least not in our hearts. I love you Ville" And with that, the pair embraced, and, for a few seconds, Ville could feel Bam's lips on his own, could feel his tongue begging for entrance, could feel his love, his warmth...then he was gone.
"I love you too Bam..." Ville whispered, and, for the first time since Bams death, was able to let his tears fall freely, was able to grieve...
