When Stefan arrived at the party he was nervous as hell. He unease was mainly caused by the fact that he was in the company of two very well-know men who were both old enough to be his Daddies and a friend of theirs who never seemed to be sure if he wanted to be Stefan’s best friend or if he hated him. The two well-known men were none other than Neil Tenant and Chris Lowe, famous for forming the British duo the Pet Shop Boys. It still amazed Stefan that only shortly after he had left his hometown Munich to study art in London he had made celebrity friends. Nothing interested him less than fame and gossip and those weird parties and premiers and yet he had stumbled right into a bit of showbiz glamour and the lifestyle of the rich and famous. At least this was how Kevin, his third companion of the evening would have called it. Kevin, who was very handsome and very notorious.
Ex-affair of Neil’s, ex-stripper and continued troublemaker.
Another reason why Stefan was nervous was the fact that the party they had just arrived at was held for the not so well-known British actor Sir Ian McKellen who had earned his knighthood mostly thanks to his dedication to the works of William Shakespeare.
The boy swallowed and wished not for the first time this evening that he had not let Neil talk him into accompanying them. He felt like a schoolboy in the presence of his teachers, self-conscious and scared. The language-barrier did not help matters either; he still had huge difficulties understanding all of those strange English accents. To top it all off, he was severely uncomfortable in his new suit, trying to walk with his shoulders squared and his back straight like Neil had told him to.
“Don’t walk like you’ve got something to hide. Face and shoulders down like that!” had been the very words. But right now Steve felt he indeed had something to hide. Himself.
He glanced sideways at his friends. Kevin and Chris were laughing at some joke Stefan eve had not even heard and Neil was eyeing up the room to find their host.
He looked pretty smart in his shiny black Gucci suit, extravagant lavender tie and polished shoes, as if it was the most natural thing to wear. When he noticed Stefan’s uncertain glances he smiled up at the boy and put a reassuring hand on his shoulder.
"Just relax and try to enjoy yourself. You'll see, Ian is a really nice guy!"
Stefan nodded and kept throwing timid glances at his companion while Neil manoeuvred them though the crowd. Again he thought how much he admired the older man. He wished he could be that self-confident and sure. Neil always seemed to know exactly what to do or say in the company of others, what kind of stories to tell or questions to ask. He was clever and extremely well read and seemed to know something about almost every topic with the exception of sports maybe. He could be his schoolmaster self, how he called it and lecture you forever on subjects like history or politics, which Stefan sometimes found rather nerve-wracking but apart from that Neil was both witty and funny in conversations. Stefan even liked his
high-pitched laughter and his funny Geordie accent, which had been softened by the long years he had been living in London - well, and probably by being gay as well.
"Ah, there he is," Neil exclaimed next to him and the boy was torn from his thoughts. Neil turned and grabbed Stefan’s hand and hurried him over to a man in his late 50's who stood in the midst of a group of well-wishers, holding a glass of Champagne in his hand. He had dark grey hair and matching eyes, which were sparkling with
good-natured humour and mischief. Just like Stefan he was tall and rather thin and looked quite handsome in an old-fashioned, wiry type of way.
"Here we go. Steve, meet Sir Ian McKellen!” Stefan was shoved forward a little but did not mind so much as Neil was closing in on him so that he could feel their shoulders touching. He sighed softly, he liked Neil touching him, liked him taking his hand, him ruffling his unruly hair.
"The modern age has entered my humble halls again!" Ian laughed when he saw then approaching and immediately pulled Neil into a lose embrace, placing fleeting kisses on both his cheek.
"You must tell me all that pop music gossip that our dear Elton is keeping from me. Where is Chris and most importantly: Who is that splendid youngster you choose as your companion tonight?"
He threw a questioning look at Stefan but when he saw the boy's terrified face expression he smiled at him and winked.
"Ian, meet a friend of mine, Mr. Steven Roth. Steve, meet Sir Ian McKellen," Neil introduced them in a mock formal tone, gesturing from one man to the other.
Before the boy could do or say anything, he was pulled into an embrace by the actor who then grabbed him by the shoulders to get a good look at him.
"You are quite a handsome one, young man," he beamed and released Stefan, who blushed violently and stumbled backwards, hitting Neil.
"And a modest one as well, it seems," Ian added. "Which is quite a rare combination in our day and age, I'm afraid."
Stefan wished he could ask Neil what to say now but instead he just held out his hand for the older man to shake.
"Happy birthday, Sir!"
Ian laughed and shook his head. "My dear boy, it is by no means necessary that you call me 'Sir'. If you can live with me calling you Steven, then I'm most happy if you call me Ian."
Stefan nodded, wishing he wouldn't blush again. "Okay... Ian," was all he could think of saying.
