Chapter One
Secluded from his friends he walked to a nearby pier and sat down on the edge of the dock. It was just past midnight and he needed time to think. His life had been so crazy lately and he felt as though he needed a break from it all. Sighing he leaned forward slightly, his palms pressing firmly against the cold wood under them.
He looked up suddenly as a figure cam running down the pier at full speed. Hearing the loud clicking of the shoes he turned his head to the noise. A figure whizzed by him and suddenly stopped when it reached the end of the dock.
"Excuse me," he asked slowly rising to his feet. He cautiously crept towards the person but stopped short when he heard sniffing and quiet sobbing. "Excuse me," he repeated and reached his hand out. Gently touching the fabric of a jacket he jumped back as the person screamed out.
"Don't touch me," the person snarled. The person was definitely a female.
"I'm…I'm sorry," he stuttered as he retracted his hand. The person moved forward a bit looking as though she wanted to jump.
"Have you ever felt like no one understands you? Like everything you do isn't good enough? Like everything you say is looked at as being stupid and of no importance? I wish they'd all just leave me alone," she stated. Her eyes were closed and he looked at her with awe.
"I understand," he said softly as the salted wind blew through his black hair. She opened her eyes and turned her head towards him.
"No you don't," she hissed angrily. "Who the hell are you anyway? And did I ask for your opinion?" He was taken aback. Glaring at her, he sneered.
"Don't come running down a pier in the middle of the night looking like you're going to kill yourself and then ask a complete stranger a question without expecting some kind of response," he said angrily.
"Who died and made you king of the night?" She hissed throwing her hands on her hips. She glared at him as he tears had completed dried out by now.
"Well seeming that I was here before you I'd say it's only fitting," he snarled. This girl had flare.
"See its men like you who drive me to the edge of his pier," she said sadly. He picked up on her emotions and decided to stop fighting.
"Not all of us are bad," he said as he placed his right hand on her shoulder. "And no one is worth your life," he stated trying to comfort her. She looked at him and weakly smiled. "What's your name?" he asked.
"Why should I tell you? I don't even know you," she said.
"You're right but sometimes you've got to trust a little," he said with a faint smile. She smiled back.
"But you know – the more you trust, the more you leave yourself open to get hurt," she replied. He stuck his hand towards her.
"I'm Lauri," he said as her hand connected with hers. She gave a small smile and gazed into his eyes noticing for the first time how good-looking he was.
"Ella," she said. He smiled and released her hand.
"That wasn't so hard now was it?" he asked. She turned her head away from him.
"I should get back before they notice I'm missing," she said and took off without saying anything more.
He stared at the spot she had once occupied. There was no doubt that she was troubled. He had sensed it from the moment she had made contact with him. Now he felt like it was his mission to figure out what happened to her and…to make her his.
