Fifteen men were out to have fun. Normally they were hanging around in groups of five persons only but this time one of them had a birthday.
Phantasmagoria’s singer Riku was turning thirty and all Under Code bands wanted to celebrate it together in one of the most famous karaoke bars in Tokyo. Probably they were using Kisaki’s money, but no-one paid attention to that anymore, not even Kisaki himself. Next morning though he would wonder for a moment why his wallet was empty and why he couldn’t buy any cigarettes with his credit card. So how the money escaped? And where did they go?
Of course, he had had to rent a room, a big room, for fifteen men to sing songs. That cost a lot. Then he had wanted to buy a present for his dear vocalist, and JUN had whined for money so that he could also remember the hero of the day with a present.
Then he had taken the whole group, Phantasmagoria, vidoll and 12012 to a restaurant. He would once again regret that he hadn’t even tried to limit their eating. But how he would have been able to say “Don’t eat so much and take something cheaper!” to Riku, who looked so cute when he thrust more ice cream into his mouth and tried to have a conversation with Jui at the same time. The result was that Jui had half of his face covered with the ice cream.
And finally, most of the money was gone for the drinks. First in the restaurant, and then in the karaoke bar. They were all drinking more than they normally did, but one was all above the others.
Rame. Vidoll’s bassist and band leader was drinking like this would be the last day of his life. His glass was empty in five minutes and then he ordered more. He was like a bottomless well: the alcohol just disappeared somewhere, and all it left behind was empty glasses and drunken Rame. And when Rame was drunk, he had more fun by himself than no-one else had in any other situation. The bassist giggled and laughed and acted foolishly and Kisaki decided the current glass of beer was Rame’s last drink tonight.
Soon he figured out he had done his decision far too late.
When Rame had nothing to drink, he was finding some other activities to entertain himself, and the shy birthday hero was his first victim. Smiling like a fox just about to get it’s prey Rame crawled closer to Riku who was a bit tipsy himself, but not tipsy enough to not to notice Rame’s goals. The bassist just sat on the vocalist’s lap and wrapped his arms around the blonde singer’s neck, hugging him.
Kisaki had a bad feeling about that. Of course Rame hugged people a lot. It was the meaning of his life: being cute in every way. But it wasn’t very cute when Rame started whispering naughty things in Riku’s ear. It was unfortunate that Rame’s voice didn’t change even after tens of glasses filled with beer. The bassist sounded very clear when hinting he and Riku could leave and get a room from the nearest hotel. That made the situation even scarier for Riku. Kisaki was happy to see Riku refusing this idea and pushed the advancing lolita a bit farer away.
Even though the bassist looked disappointed for a while the sudden warding off didn’t slow him down at all. Instead of that he was ready to gather all the eyes on him. He left Riku alone and climbed on the table in front of the group. The table was not very high, but the bassist had difficulties to get on it with a drunken mind and a skirt. Yes, Rame was in his full lolita –outfit, wearing a fluffy, light-coloured dress looking like a sweet cotton candy.
Rame sure looked very beautiful, even now when he wasn’t completely clear in his mind. Actually, now he looked even prettier. Rame always smiled a lot, but when he had alcohol running through his veins with the blood he was even happier. The bassist wore this non-stop smile, showing his pretty, white and straight teeth. Being earnest didn’t fit Rame at all.
Kisaki realized he had drowned into his own visions of Rame, and right now on the table there was a huge show going on. The bassist was swinging around, the hems of his dress rising up and showing his legs and something else too what Kisaki didn’t want to see. And all the others in the room were encouraging him, even his own boys! Especially Iori and Matoi gave a bunch of glances towards Rame’s feminine appearance. The bassist was almost as good as a real girl. They were both reaching to touch his legs, and all the others who didn’t want to get so close to drunken Rame were screaming out his name.
“Rame-chan, Rame-chan!” they screamed, louder and louder after every second. The feminine bassist was really getting a high for both alcohol and those loud encouragements.
God, also known as Kisaki, thought this was enough. He wasn’t going to look Rame dancing on the table any longer. He stood up from the chair he had sat for a long time watching precisely what his bands were doing, and reached Rame’s shoulder, pulling the dancing bassist lower so that he could whisper to his ear.
“Rame-chan, I think it’s time for you to go to bed”, Kisaki said very close to Rame’s face, ready to take the bassist with him to the hotel they had decided to stay for a night. Kisaki had foreseen that not a single person in their group would be able to drive anywhere after these parties. “I’ll come with you so you don’t have to walk alone”, he added. He would be extremely worried about Rame if he let him to go alone. First of all, even in Japan there was men who searched their victims in the streets. And Rame was a perfect victim: Not in his full consciousness and very beautiful. And those men didn’t care if their victim was a girl-looking man or a man-looking girl. Anything was enough for them. And besides, Kisaki didn’t want Rame to end up to a next bar on his way.
But Rame didn’t agree with Kisaki. He pushed the other bassist away from him and smirked, making his intentions clear enough for God, and those intentions didn’t include leaving in any point. Poor Rame, he would have a total hangover next morning. Kisaki almost pitied him until he remembered no-one asked the bassist to drink that much. And Rame was an adult man, he should have known better what consequences follow the alcohol.
But Kisaki still didn’t let this thing be. He was sure Rame should now go to sleep. So even though the bassist tried to fight against him, Kisaki pulled Rame off of the table.
“Enough is enough, Rame-chan”, he explained while Rame tried to slap him all over his chest. It was the highest place the shorter man could reach. It annoyed Kisaki, but he remained calm for the sake that Rame was drunk. He was going to drag the other bassist to the hotel if he had to, but enough was enough as he said. No more parties for this man.
When Rame was still fighting against him and hitting his chest with his small hands, Kisaki was about to lose his nerves.
“Stop that. Don’t act like a child.” But Kisaki had to admit Rame was a child when he was drunk. A pretty little girl. Not a man at all. Little girls just didn’t drink so much.
“I’m not tired! You go to bed! I stay here! Stupid Kisaki-san…” Rame growled a moment but suddenly glancing at Kisaki and trying to look very cute. What an unsteady mind. Now he had grown up from a child to be a teenager! God snorted and dragged the smaller man out of the door to a corridor leading away from the room.
Rame screamed again acting like a child who didn’t get what he wanted. He rebelled and flung towards the door to get back where they came from.
“Get off! Get off me! It’s Riku-chan’s birthday! You are ruining his special day!” the bassist yelled, soon realizing he wasn’t going to get freed. Kisaki had a tight hold on his lean waist and Rame could conclude with his blurry mind that Kisaki had no will to let him go back.
“I’m sure I know my boy better than you so that I can say he doesn’t want a drunken bassist as a birthday present”, Kisaki answered, letting go of Rame’s waist but making sure he didn’t run away. Surprisingly he didn’t even try. He didn’t run back, but refused to walk any further. The shorter bassist just stood still, staring at Kisaki with a blaming gaze.
“Well, at least I could be a present. You didn’t buy anything to him, did you?”
“Who paid all this? Who paid your food, your karaoke room, your drinks?” Why Rame had to argue with him now? The shorter man looked so cute, looked so innocent and sweet. Why couldn’t he be the same on the inside? Why couldn’t he just smile, smile his pretty smile and make everybody love him? Everyone who fell in love with Rame’s smile broke the heart on his striking nature. It was such a pity, that so talented, cleaver and beautiful man was that annoying.
“That’s just your responsibility. He’s your singer after all.” Rame was now moralizing him, Kisaki, God. He breathed calmly even though he felt his blood pressure was getting too high. He had been patient with Rame, but now the bassist was going too far. Rame had always been self-confident. Rame knew what he wanted, he was always sure about things he was doing. Rame had the potential. Rame had everything to get really famous.
But if he thought he was someone important to moralize God’s actions, he was just being egoistic. And Kisaki didn’t like egoistic people.
“Just shut up, Rame”, Kisaki hissed, taking a step to leave. Either Rame would follow him or not. What ever happened God wasn’t at the mood of playing Rame’s games. Especially when the other man was not in his full consciousness. Arguing with someone like that was pointless; They never realized how wrong they were.
“A killjoy. That’s what you are, Kisaki-san.”
Hearing that sentence behind him Kisaki turned around to look at Rame. He sensed the bassist’s reply was still unfinished. The other man wanted to continue. Kisaki knew Rame wanted to hurt him now. He could feel it radiating from the shorter man. The disappointment, the sweet bitterness.
“No wonder Kaoru-san and the others left you. Soon, Phantasmagoria will leave you as well.”
Mental pain, hatred, rage. All these feelings strike in Kisaki’s mind, all of them no more than in a second. And during that second Kisaki had time to stride back to Rame and hit the shorter man straight to the face.
And after that second Kisaki immediately regret what he had done. He saw how the other bassist swayed by the force of his hit, and lost his balance. He watched, like a slowdown movie, how one of his closest friends fell on his side, causing a bad sound when hitting the floor.
Kisaki was shocked. How he had been able to do that? How he had been able to hit one of his bands’ leaders. He tried to comfort himself by thinking Rame annoyed him on purpose but it didn’t help. He had had no right to hit another human being; he had no right to hit any living creature. The second reference fit better on Rame.
It had all happened so fast that the shorter man was still wondering what hit on him with such a speed. He lifted himself up, his whole body resting against one of his arms free hand rising up to meet the burning flesh on his cheek. Touching it hurt but Rame kept rubbing it like proving himself with the pain he had just been a victim of violence. There was no bruise yet, just the rusty taste of blood in Rame’s mouth.
“Rame-san…” Kisaki whispered, stepping forward to help the shorter man up on his feet again. Rame’s hand stopped him from coming any closer, and the bassist stood up all by himself. He didn’t even support himself on Kisaki, he just held his other hand up to keep him away, using one hand to get up. First God thought it was possible that Rame had already forgiven him, that maybe alcohol blurred his mind enough to forget what had happened. He hoped. Oh, how he hoped that was possible.
He didn’t actually feel disappointed when he realize the shorter man didn’t forgive him at all. And the way how Rame didn’t forgive was the worst of all. Kisaki wanted to hear shouting, he wanted to feel himself guilty of this, he wanted Rame to hate him in aggressive way, maybe even hit back. He wanted the emotional overflow, he wanted all that hatred he had transferred from himself to Rame through the bunch to burst out. So they would be quits with each other.
But Rame didn’t.
“I’ll go to sleep now”, Rame said, without looking into Kisaki’s eyes. He didn’t look at Kisaki at all. First time Kisaki saw Rame’s cold side. Normally this man was so energetic and happy, always smiling to the others, always encouraging. Rame’s childish happiness was like a pretty, light-coloured flower Kisaki had just killed with the coldness. Rame was now as cold as he himself had been to Rame. He didn’t mean it to happen. God, first time he saw the effects of hatred near him, and he could do nothing.
“Let me take you to the hotel…”
“No. If I go alone I have better chances to survive the journey without getting beaten up.”
When the bassist turned his back to Kisaki, God wanted to run after him, take him into his arms and beg him forgiveness. Like God ever needed forgiveness. He was the one supposed to divide his mercy and holiness. He was supposed to ask Rame to feel sorry for insulting him.
But Rame didn’t ask him to apologise. Kisaki didn’t know if he had done that if Rame had asked him to. But he wanted. He wanted to embrace the shorter bassist and apologise, ask him to be his friend again, beg him to forgive him.
But of course Kisaki was too proud to act like that. He didn’t grab Rame in his arms. He didn’t whisper anything to his ear. He didn’t shout after him, he didn’t ask him to come back. He didn’t even follow him. God, so almighty, so beautiful, was destroyed by his own actions.
Kisaki stood in the corridor for a long time, staring at the place Rame had lied on just a moment ago. One moment turned into two moments, two moments to three moments. Three moments made a long time, and two long times made an eternity.
