Dammit why did this always happen to you? There you were enjoying the day that you were spending with your friend's nephew, buying the both of you some ice cream, when all of the sudden you can't find him. You ran along the busy city streets committing his features and clothing to memory, just in case. Black hair, about two feet and ten inches tall, he has on a black hooded sweater with a punisher emblem on it, blue jeans and a pair of black and silver Nike shocks. It was all you could do not to scream and kick the person closest to you.
"Tetsu! Tetsu!" you began crying frantically as you tore the street. Your eyes followed the arms of any man or woman holding hands with a child, bulged at the sight of empty shop doorways, and practically cried when you reached the entrance of the subway without seeing him anywhere. Oh, what had you done? What was Ryouta going to say? He was going to kill you, that's what was going to happen. He was going to kill you with out a word. This was it...you were going to die. You could see the taller, stronger male silhouette of your best friend in Japan brandishing a kitchen knife the size of your arm in the back of your mind as you looked around you once more. Running you hand through your hair you gave a sigh of frustration and anxiety, but if you were going to die it wasn't the right thing to do to leave Tetsu out there all alone. So, you kept looking.
You turned on the spot looking all around you for any sign of the dark haired little boy, "Tetsu! Where are you? Tetsu!" You could see the people around you staring at you, your heavy American accent protruding through your practiced Japanese, no doubt. Right now, you could care less. Right now there was a little eight year old boy who was walking along minding his own business and possibly getting stalked by child predators or kidnappers. The color drained from your face as your hopes began to fade, it had been fifteen minutes since you realized he had slipped away from you. Why did you let go of his hand to pay for the ice cream? Breathing became a hard task and you undid your tan jacket that reached the backs of your knees in an attempt to cool your body. You felt sick, stifled, suffocated. Covering your forehead with your hand you looked around once more when a familiar laughter filtered into your ears. Eyes growing large, head twisting every which way you searched harder than before for the little boy, hoping it wasn't your own mind playing tricks on you. You followed the sound into underground entrance of the subway and saw on the first landing of the stairs what should have made you leap with joy, instead it made you angry. So angry, in fact, that you were crying.
"Tetsu!" you cried and flew past the busy subway passengers. His little laughing face turned up to you and he smiled even brighter and waved at you until you roughly grabbed him by the shoulders, falling onto your knees in a frustrated mess beside him. His features melted from pleased to curious as he stared at your flustered face, "Tetsu, what were you doing?" you cried not noticing the two figures standing in front of him. "Where the hell do you get off leaving me like that? I was freakin' paying for the ice cream and I turn around and you aren't there! Where did you go? WHY did you take off, huh? Do you know how worried I was? Fuck worried, I was practically shitting my pants looking for you!" you continued gripping him as if he would disappear any second. He winced at your tone, but you knew very well that he was used to curse words thanks to dear Uncle Ryouta. You heard a chuckle and someone clear their throat, catching your attention. Looking up, you saw two men one was standing and the other crouching on his haunches holding a small golden colored puppy. They both had dyed blonde hair. It had to be dyed, no Asian that you had ever met had natural blonde hair. The one standing had black undertones in his hair, and the one holding the puppy had black and dark brown mixed precariously amongst his shiny tresses. You thought the worst, the men were coaxing Tetsu, trying to get him to trust them. Narrowing your eyes you stood up, as did the man holding the puppy, and held the boy to your side with one arm. He seemed to go back to normal now that you weren't yelling at him.
"Look, Ms. Hime, these two men helped me catch Tata!" he said happily. The two of you had a long running joke with Ryouta. Ryouta was the king of his castle (apartment), you were the princess who lived in the neighboring castle (apartment), and Tetsu was the Knight who came to defend you both from boredom and old age. Thus the name 'Hime' stuck with you around Ryouta and little Tetsu.
"Tata?" you asked looking down at him.
"Yeah, that is the name I gave the puppy. He ran by when we were getting the ice cream and I didn't want to let him get away."
"We saw Tetsu coming down the steps following the little one here," said the man holding the little panting dog, "I had a feeling someone would be looking for him, so I caught the dog to keep him from going farther down into the subway shaft." You looked up at him, a genuine smile gracing his lips all the way up to his eyes. Quickly, you glanced at his friend who had a bemused smile plastered on his face, no doubt because of your brief mental breakdown. You began blushing. You decided that the dog was far too small to be trained to do something like help child kidnappers when Tetsu tugged on the sleeve of your jacket making you look down at him.
"I didn't know I was gone that long, I'm sorry."
You face melted into a sad, affectionate smile, "It's alright, I was scared that's all. So, you followed the puppy all the way over here?" The little boy nodded, slightly embarrassed by his careless actions, "Don't look so flustered. You might turn into me one day...your uncle’s not going to kill me, and you're safe, that's really all that matters." Looking back up at the two men, you suddenly realized that their eyes were on you. Watching you and how you interacted with little Tetsu. Taking a steadying breath, you felt your face heat up and stepped towards them, "Would it be alright with you if I took the dog? Tetsu seems to like him, and I'm sure he'd like to have him."
"Her."
"Pardon?"
The friend smiled, "The dog is a girl."
"Oh, sorry."
"It is?" asked Tetsu, sounding a little disappointed.
"Yes," said the friend.
"It's not my dog, so I see nothing wrong with letting him have it," said the man holding the puppy.
"Ms. Hime I don't think mom will let me have a dog either way. I think she's got allergies because one time..." He launched into a story about how he brought a cat home and his mom was sick for days even after the cat was gone. He finished and looked down at the ground.
You crouched down next to him, "Okay, my little Knight, how 'bout we keep the dog at my place so you can see hi-her..." you said looking at the friend, who smiled wider in turn, "Whenever you go to your unlcle's?" Tetsu's face lit up like a light in the dark.
"Yes! Ms. Hime! Oh, please, please, please," you and the two men laughed at his begging. You had been the one to suggest keeping the puppy at your place, so why did he think it was necesarry to beg for it?
"Yes, Tetsu. I'll keep Tata at my apartment," you laughed.
The man walked over to Tetsu and handed him the puppy then ruffled the little boy's hair, "Congratulations on your new dog. Tata will have a good owner."
After staring at little Tata for a few seconds Tetsu stated, "I don't wanna name her Tata anymore..."
"No?" you asked.
"Her name is going to be Hime, after you," He smiled proudly at his new dubbing of the tiny dog in his small hands. He sat down near the wall of the stairs and began playing with the little puppy in his lap.
"Is 'Hime' your name?" said the man who had been holding the puppy. He smiled teasingly at you.
You felt slightly offended, as if he was saying you couldn't have a Japanese name, "A nicname that my friend and Tetsu gave me out of playfulness. Why? What's wrong with it?"
The man held up his hand's in defense, "I didn't mean anything by it. I was just wondering why you had a Japanese name when you clearly don't look the part."
"What's that supposed to mean?" you said feeling yourself get angry, "Just because I'm not Japanese means I can't have a Japanese name?" Your hands immediatley folded themselves in front of your chest and you stared at him crossly. Whoever he was, you thanked him for finding Tetsu, but he was getting on your nerves. His friend laughed in the background and you glared at him as well.
"No, no I didn't mean that at all..." he said amusedly. You glared at him, anger burning in your veins and eyes. "I was just trying to get your real name out of you, but I ended up pissing you off. I'm sorry. Let's start over." You cocking an eyebrow at him indicated that he should continue. "I'm Ruki, it's nice to meet you. This is my...co-worker, Reita. May we ask who you are?" Co-worker? They could get a job with hair like that? You thought, your anger seeping away slightly. Ruki was dressed as if he had just left work. White shirt and a black coat, his pants were black jean material. He wore a black belt with white stars of various sizes all over it and his shoes were white. Reita, on the other hand, looked like he had woken up and put on whatever before walking out of his house. He wore a black shirt with the words "Son of a B@%$#!" plastered on the front, a red zip up hooded jacket, dark jeans with snags and holes in them, black boots and a black bandana with a large white spade on it tied around his neck. Silently you wished you could look as cool as they did in semi-casual and casual clothing. Just looking at them made you realize all the flaws you potentially posessed. Did your pores look huge? Was your face too shiny? Did your breath stink? Was your hair too flat or too puffy? Did you coordinate? You took a mental check of your clothing: dark brown scarf, white polo shirt, dark brown pants, silver chain belt, tan jacket, brown shoes. Yes, you looked...okay. Whatever, why were you even thinking about this now?
"I'm Kristina...nice to meet you." You held out your hand for him to shake. As he reached out to grab a hold of it you heard a gasp and a few mutters of "Sugoi! Sugoi!" behind you after Reita had stepped into the sunnier side of the stair well to formally greet you.
"Uh...what do you say we take you and Tetsu out to lunch or maybe coffee and a hot chocolate?" Said Ruki rather quickly. Reita looked a little antsy and kept looking down towards the subway shaft over your sholder. The sudden offer seemed a little off and you hesitated to answer.
"Ruki, we really should go," you heard the sound of shoes tapping quickly against the tile of the stairs, someone was running,"..now would be a good time."
Ruki looked at you once more and nodded his head, "Some other time, then. Goodbye." Reita nodded to you, then he and Ruki made their way quickly up the steps and you looked back at Tetsu, who was watching them go sadly.
"You want to go eat with them, don't you?" you asked him. He smiled and nodded his head fervently. You sighed and grabbed his hand and pulled the dog away from him, hurrying up the steps after the two kind strangers, "Wait! Mr. Ruki, Mr. Reita!" You saw them about to climb into a taxi cab. Reita's head snapped around to see you and Tetsu running towards them. He smiled and held out his hand for you to help you in after Ruki, then let Tetsu slide in to your left before getting in and shutting the door. Ruki muttered something to the driver and the cab took off just as a group of rather darkly dressed girls emerged from the subway shaft with disappointed faces. You looked back at them until they were out of sight.
"Friends of yours?" you asked Ruki who kept his eyes to the front of the cab.
He smiled slightly, "You could say that." You were silent, as was Ruki, for the rest of the trip as Reita and Tetsu talked about the little dog in his lap. When the cab pulled up to the curb you felt something touch the back of your neck. Instinctively you looked to your left. Reita was bobbing his head to some song only he could hear, drumming his fingers on the seat. His arm was stretched along the back of the taxi seat, fingers softly grazing the skin of your neck every so often. You moved forward slightly and he realized his actions, muttering an apology for invading your space. Ruki opened the car door and stepped out. You followed and pulled Tetsu with you, you hand firmly holding his, making sure he didn't slip away from you at all. You realized that the dog would most likely pose a problem if you brought him into the retaurant and began looking around at the shops in the area.
"I'll be right back," you said tapping Ruki's shoulder. Pulling Tetsu and the dog with you, you walked into a bag shop and picked out a tote bag with flat bottom and room enough for the little dog to lay down in. After purchasing the bag you pulled off your scarf and made a little bed inside of it for the dog before following the other two into a laid back looking restaurant. Inside were tables and booths with a bar in the very back and arcade games randomly occupying corners and sections of walls with children playing a few of them. By the time Tetsu had turned back to you you were already handing him what equalled five dollars American money in Yen. The young boy ran off as the three of you laughed and moved to a booth. You sat in one side of the booth and leaned down to place the dog by your feet. When you sat back up Reita was sitting next to you, Ruki across. Ruki had his fingers laced on the table, looking at you over the tops of them with a smile in his eyes. Reita, on the other hand, was already thumbing through the mini-menu on the table and didn't notice the light blush that crept onto your cheeks, causing Ruki to smile with his lips this time. The first time you ever noticed his lips.
"So," you began, keeping your eyes away from his,"How is it that you got me to go to lunch with the two of you?" Ruki cocked an eyebrow and was about to answer when Reita interjected non-chalantly.
"Ruki's a smooth talker. Somehow, even though he's a little twisted, people seem to like him." A teasing, goofy smile formed on his pink mouth and you couldn't help but smile as well. Looking up at Ruki, you could see he was a little less than pleased with Reita, but still held a smile on his face.
"That and you have a soft spot for kids, I know Tetsu was the one who made you go with us. So, really, it was just lady luck gracing us with her lovely smile today. What do you do anyway? I mean, what kind of job gives you this much time off?"
"I was a student at ICU here in Tokyo, and now I'm working for a translation company."
"A translation company, eh?" asked Reita with mild interest.
"Yes, I can speak six languages not including Japanese." You were proud of this fact. Most people's language retention switch turned off when they were about thirteen, and how you were able to manage to learn seven languages at the age of twenty you weren't too sure. You figured it was just hard work paying off. You had just turned twenty five last month and were employed full time, translating websites into English for various Asian companies, not really your cup of tea, but it paid the bills.
"Seven languages?" Ruki said with a hint of admiration, "Very impressive."
"Thank you, sir." You said with a tiny laugh.
"Hmm, and you like working for this translation company?"
You paused for a second. It's not that you weren't greatful for the job, but you would like something a little more exciting, but still, it's something that you could work on later, when your work experience was higher, "Let's suffice it to say 'It gets the job done.'" Ruki nodded and began moving a few of the advertisements and condements out of his way as a waitress walked up to the table. Reita looked disappointed, as if he wanted to start an argument.
"Hello!" She began with a smile and a voice way too high for your liking, "What can I get you guys to drink?" You ordered your drinks, and later on your food. And finally when it seemed that things were winding down, you felt as if there was a hidden agenda in the meal. You could feel a different vibe coming from Ruki, and after a quick trip to the bathroom, you felt the same from Reita as well.
"So," Ruki began. You laughed cutting him off a little.
"So...now we're getting down to business. I knew there was something that you guys wanted from me. I mean, not at first, but I could tell going on through the meal." You said playing with your straw.
Reita smiled at Ruki, "Then, she's perfect for the job isn't she?" Job?
"What job?" you asked, quickly becoming skeptical.
After a glance at Reita and a quick nod, Ruki leaned forward and said, "We have a proposition for you, Miss Kristina."
You cocked an eyebrow at him, "Go on, sir..."
Three and a half weeks later you were packing for a flight to the United States to translate English for The GazettE, a band you had never heard of, until the day you met him.
