Have you ever had to make the ultimate decision? To leave the one you’re in love with and cause her a lifetime of pain, or to tell her you love her only so she can die?
Have you ever had to be caught in the middle of this? Have you ever had to hear the cruel words of a stranger who tells you that you and your best friend are destined to walk the world together, and he must leave the girl he loves?
I have, and it’s not a fun situation to be in.
My name is Elizabeth Báthory, but for the course of my entire life, everyone’s simply called me, Lizzi. What I didn’t know about my name, is that I was named after a direct relative of mine, a 17th century countess born on August 7th, 1560, believed to be a serial killer who’d attack girls and drink or bath in their blood to keep herself young. We also shared the same birthday.
In 1610, Hungarian officials began an investigation of the preceding rumors I’ve mentioned. But she was far too powerful and well known and was, therefore, never put to death; instead, she was put under strict house arrest. In the years following, she deteriorated for some mysterious reason and died in 1614... But it’s really no mystery at all, without a steady source of the blood she once received her form broke down... But this is something I’ll cover later. Just remember her name, and know this: her legacy and matronage lived on through the centuries as her children waited for the day when her most worthy granddaughter could reclaim the glory she once had, for it will all fit into my tale.
To get back to the topic of my best friend, his name was Frank Iero, we dated when between the ages of 14-16, but broke up on amicable terms and remained best friends. He was now just a month shy of his 25th birthday, and I had only recently reached my 25th year.
I suppose a part of me was still slightly in love with him, but no enough where it tore me apart to see him happily involved with his girlfriend of three years, Jamia Nestor, a friend of ours since our high school years. We’ve been an unbreakable trio since our sophomore year, labeling ourselves as the three musketeers.
It was on his birthday, as the three of us celebrated in the house we shared (which his grandmother had willed to him), when a knock sounded on his door. With the simplest motion of opening it, we’d changed the course of our lived forever. On the other side of that thin board the meant protection, stood a group of four men that appeared to be about our ages. One was about 5’8 with black hair that fell to his shoulders and deep hazel eyes. He had pale skin and an incredible smile that I could definitely see myself falling for... Though perhaps that smile was why we were so comfortable with the stranger. Next to him was a boy with brown mousy hair, wearing a pair of chic looking glasses over his green eyes. The two must’ve been brothers, the resemblance was quite obvious. Then there was a tan boy, taller than all of them, with shoulder length curly hair that could only be described as a fro. The final boy, was only slightly shorter than the one with the fro, he had bleach blond hair gelled into a f aux-hawk and bright blue eyes.
“Can we help you?” Frank asked.
“Sorry to bother you all, but, we’re actually old friends of Lizzi’s family, her mom, Sarah, sent us over... There’s a bit of a family, um, issue that needs to be resolved,” the first boy said kindly. “I’m Gerard, by the way.”
“Oh, alright,” I smiled, if my mom had sent them over, it was obviously important. “Why don’t you come in..?”
You see that? That was my first mistake... Inviting them into the only thing that could have protected me from my so-called destiny.
