‘Kai!’ Aoi laughed as he ran over to Kai who had his back to him, jumping onto the drummer’s back. ‘Tell me who’s coming…’
‘No Aoi… you’ll have to wait…’ Kai laughed, putting his hands on Aoi’s back, supporting him. ‘Please put a shirt on.’ He added.
It was early in the morning, they were still at the hotel, just mucking around until they had to leave the hotel a little later that morning.
‘Boys, keep the energy, we’ll need it tonight.’ Reita said coolly, putting on a simple black singlet.
Then a knock came from the door.
‘I’ll get it!’ Uruha, who was in nothing but his pants, ran for the door, looking through the peephole before opening it. ‘Yes?’
A girl stood there in front of him, dressed in a pair of tightly fitted white pants, and a snugly fitted black singlet. She was a little shorter than Ruki, she was thin but fit - she had curves in all the right places.
‘Nice shoes.’ Uruha glanced at her knee high black pirate boots.
‘Thanks.’ She smiled.
‘You are?’ Uruha asked.
Aoi, who just saw who was at the door looked a little stunned for a second before he grinned and joined Uruha at the door.
‘Rei!’ Aoi reached forward and kissed her cheek.
‘Er… you know her?’ Uruha asked Aoi.
‘Uruha, stop kidding around.’ Aoi grabbed Rei’s wrist, pulling her into their room. ‘Come in.’
‘Okay…’ Uruha moved out of the way, closing the door as soon as she was inside, before watching as her long crimson red hair swayed behind her.
‘Rei!’ Kai seemed to have recognised her as well, as he came over to give her a hug.
‘Hello you who found me…’ She hugged him back.
‘Ruki! Rei’s here!’ Reita called Ruki who was still busy in the bathroom, ‘hey princess.’ He added to Rei, kissing her on the cheek.
‘Do I know you?’ Uruha asked the girl, who’d now joined Reita, Aoi and Kai in the living room of their hotel suite.
‘He’s forgotten?’ Aoi teased, wrapping an arm around Rei who sat on the couch next to him.
‘I must’ve been drunk?’ Uruha didn’t know what else to say.
‘Uruha you dork!’ She laughed.
‘Wait!’ Uruha remembered now. ‘Holy fuck! Rei-chan?’ Uruha laughed.
‘Give me a kiss you big dork!’ She smiled, opening her arms to him as he came to her, leaning down to kiss her on the cheek.
‘Wow… your hair… it looks different… you look different…’ Uruha smiled, sitting on the empty armchair near Kai.
‘How is it we all recognised her but you?’ Reita laughed.
‘I… don’t know… holy shit… what have you been up to?’ Uruha couldn’t shake away his amazement.
She was a good friend of Aoi’s, he introduced her to them a couple of years back before the GazettE became what they are now. They used to hang out lots back in the days, she used to help Ruki write lyrics and help Kai with the drums.
‘A couple of years and you forget about me, ey Uruha?’ She raised an eyebrow.
‘Aw, I’m sorry…’ Uruha smiled honestly. ‘You just look different… where’s the multicoloured hair gone? And it’s long now… super long…’
‘Yeah, I like it long now… and I like red.’ She shrugged. ‘But my face hasn’t changed.’ She screwed up her face mockingly.
‘Ah, if you’d entered like that I would’ve recognised you.’ Uruha laughed.
‘How’d you know we were here?’ Reita asked.
‘I bumped into her yesterday when I was grocery shopping.’ Kai answered.
‘Rei?’ Ruki finally came out of the bathroom, fully dressed.
‘Hi!’ She waved to Ruki as he joined the others around the couch.
‘Goodness it’s been so long…’ Ruki went to give her a kiss on the cheek before realizing all the couches were taken. So he went to sit on Uruha’s lap.
‘Oh…’ Uruha, out of reflex pushed Ruki away. ‘Wait man, don’t sit on me without warning me…’ He laughed and got into a comfortable position, uncrossing his legs. ‘Now you can sit.’
‘Sorry…’ Ruki held back a grin before sitting on Uruha’s lap.
‘You coming to the live tonight?’ Aoi asked.
‘I didn’t get tickets…’ Rei said disappointedly. ‘Ran out. Sold out too quick…’
‘Well just watch from the roof thing.’ Kai said.
‘I have work tonight.’ She smiled apologetically.
‘Come on Rei-chan, when was the last time you saw us play?’ Uruha said.
‘Yeah, come on, it would be awesome!’ Reita said.
She appeared to be thinking as she leaned closer towards Aoi, who still had an arm around her. Leaning her head on Aoi’s chest, she smiled. ‘Alright.’ She said.
‘No!’ Ruki said.
‘Ruki, that’s not nice.’ Uruha nudged Ruki.
‘No, I meant I just got a brilliant idea!’ Ruki laughed.
‘Oh…’ Rei sighed in relief. ‘I thought you didn’t want me there…’ She chuckled.
‘Of course he wants you there… he wants you everywhere else if given the chance…’ Aoi smirked.
Rei only laughed at the comment, the rest of the boys laughed along, though Ruki just sat there with a red face. ‘Shut up.’
‘Sorry Ruki, sometimes little Kai needs a break from being picked on…’ Uruha patted Ruki’s shoulders from behind.
‘So what was the idea?’ Reita asked.
‘You want to sing with us?’ Ruki asked Rei excitedly.
‘What?’ She lifted her head off Aoi a little too quickly.
‘Filth In The Beauty!’ Ruki said.
‘Yeah! The female bits! Instead of using the pre-recorded stuff!’ Kai nodded.
‘Yeah, please Rei-chan?’ Uruha looked at her with puppy eyes.
‘Uruha you know that just doesn’t work.’ Rei raised an eyebrow though smiling in amusement. She missed hanging out with the boys. ‘Aoi?’ She looked to Aoi for his opinion.
‘You’re not going to be released until you say yes.’ Aoi wrapped both his arms around her tightly, surprising her a little.
‘It’s a threat now?’ She laughed.
‘Yup.’ Aoi winked at the rest of them, who wrapped their arms over Aoi’s trapping Rei.
‘Come on Rei, we all know you can sing!’ Reita said, adding himself into the massive huddle.
‘Aha… hahaha…. ahahahahahah! Aoi, stop!’ She laughed, screaming. ‘Aahahahha! Aoi!’
He was tickling her ribs hard and she couldn’t escape, trapped by the rest of the boys.
‘Please?’ Aoi asked, putting on a seductive voice.
‘Ahhaa… Ao… okay… okay I’ll sing…’ She laughed.
‘Good girl…’ Aoi smiled as the boys separated themselves from the huddle, resuming their seats.
‘Okay.’ Rei straightened herself up, smiling.
‘And you’ll have to stand next to me as when you get on stage.’ Aoi wrapped an arm around her again, resting his hand on her shoulder.
‘What? I thought I was singing backstage?’ She asked.
‘Don’t make me…’ Aoi raised his eyebrow teasingly, reading his other hand to tickle her again.
‘Okay okay…’ She raised her hands in front of her protectively, giggling.
Uruha couldn’t help but feel a little jealous. He’d always thought she was cute, but why Aoi? He was closest with Aoi, though he was jealous at the fact that Aoi was the one she seemed to be interested in. They all know something used to go on between Aoi and Rei, none of them just ever said anything about it. And they all knew Uruha was deeply attracted to her, especially since he started adding "chan" to the end of her name.
‘Well we have to be at the live house right after lunch today, I want to make sure everything’s going to be smooth.’ Ruki emphasised the “smooth”. ‘And we have interviews for Fool’s Mate in an hour, you should all get dressed.’
‘Right.’ Aoi got up.
‘Well I’ll let you guys do that, I have to come into work and tell them I’m not coming tonight.’ Rei got up too. ‘So what time and where shall I meet you all?’ Rei asked.
Aoi had already made his way towards his bedroom to fetch his shirt when he said ‘Hey guys, how about going to the interview without me?’
‘What do you mean?’ Uruha turned around to face him.
‘I’ll take Rei to her work and we’ll meet you guys at the live house.’ Aoi suggested.
Reita seemed to understand that Aoi missed her and wanted to spend some time with her. ‘Yeah, its usually only you and I who answer questions anyway, Ruki.’
‘No no, Aoi you shouldn’t. You should all go to the interview together.’ Rei insisted. ‘I’ll be real quick at work, how about I meet you guys at wherever it is you’re doing the interview?’ She too wanted to spend time with Aoi, but she didn’t want them to brawl over it, she saw that Uruha didn’t like the idea.
So they all agreed to that, and after she was given the address of the café where they were doing the interview, she left them to get ready.
Aoi went into his room to fetch his shirt, closing the door behind him, he let his mind go back to a number of years ago, when they were younger, before the GazettE became a reality.
‘Aoi, I can’t do this anymore…’ She said that time.
Her hair was a lot shorter than it was now – just grew over the shoulder, and it was dyed mostly in blue, with some red, green, purple and orange streaks. Strangely it suited her.
‘Rei…’ Aoi tried to talk her out of it, looking deep into her sad brown eyes. He raised a hand to touch her soft pale arm, but she pulled herself back. He loved her, he really did, but nothing he could say would change her mind. He knew this, but still he tried.
‘No, Aoi, I can’t be with someone who spends too much time away from me. I love you and I love this thing we have, but I just can’t do this committing thing right now. I’m not doubting you but I can’t trust you either.’ She said, holding back the tears.
‘What do you mean you don’t trust me? I don’t think you have any reason not to trust me.’ Aoi said calmly, despite his frustration.
‘Yuu…’ She called him by his real name. ‘Fan girls can be tempting…’
‘But…’ Aoi protested.
‘No, Yuu you don’t understand. I hate thinking what might happen even though I know you wouldn’t. You’re going to be away a lot, but I want you to be away a lot, this is your dream and I want you to chase it, I don’t want to be in the way and I know I will be in the way.’ She was now really struggling to keep the tears away.
‘Rei, don’t cry…’ Aoi pulled her to him by her upper arm before wrapping his arms around her, hugging her tightly.
‘Aoi…’ She sobbed, burying her face in his chest.
He knew exactly what she meant - they’d been discussing it for a while now, since there was talk of the band getting signed. He just didn’t want to end it.
‘I mean… just for now… we can always see each other, we can pick this up later when we’re older… I just don’t think…’ Rei sobbed.
‘Rei…’ Aoi only tightened his embrace.
They held each other in silence for a minute until her crying ceased.
‘You have to move away soon.’ She said.
‘We’ll keep in touch.’ He made a promise, finally agreeing.
‘Really?’ She pulled away slightly, looking up at him.
He had insisted they kept going no matter what, but she knew she wouldn’t be able to stand the lifestyle he was going to enter.
‘Really.’ Aoi smiled sadly. ‘You’re right. I don’t want to trouble you. We can pick this up when I finish… even if that time is when we become wrinkly and old.’
‘I’m so sorry…’ She smiled sadly before he leaned in to kiss her lips.
‘Now stop with the crying.’ He pulled away, smiling still. ‘I hate it when you cry.’
She smiled in return as she let him wipe the tears off her face.
‘I want you to meet the boys.’ Aoi said. ‘Next week, can you meet us?’
She nodded.
‘Here’s the address.’ Aoi said.
From that point on they stayed friends. Aoi introduced her to Ruki and the others as a friend.
She’d spend lots of time at the designated place, watching the boys practice, sometimes helping Yune with the drums, Kai after Yune left and Ruki with lyrics. She stayed around long enough until Kai came into the scene replacing Yune.
She stopped all contacts with them just before Wakaramichi was released in 2002.
It wasn’t a nice time for Aoi. He had to hide his loss from his friends, deal with it alone.
When he saw her that morning, he felt a little stab in his heart but ignored it as he went to greet her.
They were good at pretending it was all okay…
