'Red As Blood'
I was told, that I should be proud and honored to be alive. My mother you see, gave her life giving birth to me.
My father, The king. I am told, was crushed by her death and couldn't stand the slight of me. Until he leaned I was a boy.
It was said that my mother would sit by the window every night, watching the snow fall and sing to sleeping inborn me. My Nanny Bella, told me that once she was sewing and it pricked her finger. Three drops of blood fell on to the ebony window seal.
The first one, she thought I was to be a girl. The second drop, She knew I would be as white as snow, as black as ebony and red as blood. The third, she knew she would not live though childbirth.
All but the part about me being a girl was true. My skin was always cold and pale as fresh snow. My lips and cheeks were bright red, as red as blood. And my long curly hair was as black as ebony.
I am also told, I have my mother's green eyes.
At first as I said my father wanted nothing to do with me. But when learning I was his heir he 'tried' to play father. I wanted no part. For five years he pretended I didn't exist. He didn't even know what I looked like until I ran out into the court hall and he asked who's son I was and why I was not taught better manners.
My childhood has been a good one. I was given everything I could ever want. Bella I have come to think of as my mother. She is kind to me and does not treat me any different than her own children.
I guess I should really and truly start my story from the day I turned Seven.
Bella awoke me by gently brushing my hair away from my forehead. I smiled and yawned, slowly opening my eyes I sat up. Bella smiled warmly at me, her light brown eyes glowing and her soft feathers curved into a beautiful grin. To me she was the most lovely woman in the world. I could only hope to find a wife half as wonderful as she was. She should be queen, not the monster my father married a year after my mother's death. Oh how he must have loved her!
Bella went across my large stone room and opened the wooden stutters, letting in the brilliant light and warmth of the morning. I could hear the singing of the birds and the sweet scent of flowers and honey suckles filled my senses. Bella helped me dress in my dark green stockings and matching velvet tunic.
"I have a surprise for you, my little lord." Bella's smile grew.
"Today is my birthday, isn't Bella?" I asked. She nodded and took my hand leading me to the dinning room where I'd have my breakfast.
The room had always seemed big and gloomy. Yet during these times in the morning when only the servants were up, the room was busting with life. Everyone in a hurry to have the meal ready for the King.
The was surprised to see that there was a boy around my age sitting in my favored chair. I tugged on Bella's hand and looked up at her questiontly.
"Ville, this is my nephew, Brandon." The boy looked up fro his plate and my eyes met the most amazing color blue I'd ever seen.
"Brandon, what do you say?" Bella asked sternly picking me up and placing me in the chair next to him.
"Greetings, my lord." Brandon mumbled. Bella hit him lightly on the back of the head.
"Now, Brandon,! It's rude to mumble. And I'm sure Ville wouldn't mind it if you address him by his name." The boy nodded, rubbing his head. Bella placed a plate of fresh cut apples and a bowl of cream and wheat in front of me.
"Since it's your birthday, Dear. I'm taking you and Brandon to the county side." My heart did a flip. I loved it when she took me into the county. The lands were so much greener than the over tended gardens of the castle.
"Thank you, Bella." She kissed my cheek.
"You're growing up so fast. You’re my last child, Ville." She smiled sadly before helping the others. I ate slowly, glancing to the strange boy that sat beside me. Why he was beautiful I wasn't quite sure. Maybe his unwashed wild dark brown curls even more unruly than my own, or the way he held himself, even though he was but a common boy he had the aura of a great knight. And than there were his eyes. Bright blue and…staring at me. I hadn't noticed until that moment.
Bella had told us to play in the gardens until it was time to go. She needed to finish cleaning up and than give the servants time to get a hoarse and buggy ready.
Brandon had kept quiet though breakfast. So I lead him to my favorite spot in the garden. It was the rose area, where rose brushes grew in a circle around a stone pond. He still did not speak when we sat on the edge of the water. I rolled up my leggings and dipped my feet into the cool water. Brandon watched me with raised brows.
"It's a lovely day." I said, smiling urging him to speak.
"It is." Was his answer. I sighed and leaned my head back enjoying the warmth of the sun on my face. When I looked to the other boy he was once again staring at me.
"Are you going to say anything or would you just prefer to stare at me?" I asked bitterly and with a hint of sarcasm.
"Sorry." He shrugged before looking out into the shinning water.
"No, I was rude. I should be sorry." The boy turned to me.
"Huh?" He seemed completely puzzled.
"I said I was sorry for snapping at you. I only wish to talk." Brandon than did something I wasn't expecting. He laughed. It was loud and powerful and I found myself soon joining him, not knowing the joke.
"Your strange." Was all he said after our laughter died down.
"Me? Your one who doesn't speak a word than busts into a fit of mad laughter." He smiled.
"Than I guess we'll be strange together."
"May I ask why I am strange?" I brushed a few stray hairs from my face.
"You’re a prince and you WANT to talk to me." I raised a eyebrow.
"You'll find I'm not like most royalty." I nudged him with my arm.
"I spouse not."
"You know, Brandon. You should never judge until you hear all the facts. That's what-
"Bella says, yes. Oh and please don't call me Brandon." I gave him a puzzled look.
"Than what do I call you?"
"Bam." I chuckled.
"Bam? That's odd." He shrugged.
"That's what my brother calls me since I'm always being beat for 'bad manners' "
"You seen well mannered to me." Bam smiled again and I felt something spark in me.
"Well, I like you." I found myself blushing and I had no a clue as to why.
