Chapter 1: Bad Karma
July 4th, 2008
1
“I’m so glad we were able to get together like this. I can’t believe it took us ten months to all get together again,” Gina Glocksen said, resting her left arm over Chris Richardson’s shoulder, while holding a beer bottle with her right hand. She and nine of her closest friends had been the top ten on American Idol season six, and had toured together. Now, they were all in Niagara Falls for a reunion. They had chosen Niagara Falls and The 4th of July because they thought it would be nice to see the fireworks displayed over the falls. They had met up at their hotel and came over together.
“Actually, we’re all so busy, I’m surprised we were able to all get together this soon,” Chris said, taking a sip from his own bottle.
“It’s good to see you, even though you totally forgot about me after the tour. You kept in touch with Jordin, Haley, and your precious Blakey,” but nope! Not Gina Beena.” Gina looked up at Chris and fluttered her eyelashes.
He smiled, and pulled her in for a half hug, kissing the top of her head as he did so. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to lose touch. You know, don’t take it personally. I didn’t keep in touch with Sanjaya, Melinda, LaKisha, Sligh or Phil either. As for the others, well, Jordin, she is my best friend, I wrote for Haley, and Blake… Well, he is my best friend and now boyfriend, so obviously I keep in contact with him.”
“What am I? Chopped liver? I kept leaving you messages on myspace to contact me, and you never did.” Gina stepped out of Chris’ embrace.
“I kept meaning to. I just forgot. I promise though; I’ll keep in touch from now on.” Chris gave her a quick hug, but released her this time.
Gina sighed. “You were too busy dating that girl, and then later Blake. I don’t know why you even dated her. You and Blake are like soulmates or something.”
Chris smiled. “I know. I was just confused.”
“Confused about what, babe?” Blake Lewis came over and possessively wrapped his right arm around Chris.
“When I dated—”
“Stop right there.” Blake cut Chris off with an index finger to his lips. “She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. I get it.”
Gina smirked. “I take it you didn’t like her?”
Blake snorted. “Why would I? Chris was dating her and not me. Not to mention she was a who—”
“There’s my boys!” Jordin Sparks said, her voice covering up the last bit of Blake’s sentence. She hugged first Chris, then Blake. “Sorry I’m late. My flight was delayed. Ugh! It’s so annoying.”
“Hello Jordin. It’s good to see you too,” Gina said.
Jordin looked over at Gina, as if just noticing her there. She covered her mouth to hide her smile as she shrugged. “Oops! Sorry, Gina. How are you? I missed seeing you, girl! How’s the music coming along?” She hugged Gina, who hugged her tightly back.
“It’s coming along okay. I have half my album recorded. Though you all would have known that if someone had bothered to keep in touch with me,” Gina said, breaking the hug, and glaring at her three friends.
“I’m sorry. I’ve just been so busy,” Jordin apologized.
Gina thought of saying something to the order of her not being too busy to keep in contact with Chris and Blake, but she thought better of it and kept her mouth shut. Though she was miffed that her friends had seemed to have forgotten her, she wasn’t angry enough about it to start something when they were supposed to be having fun.
“Hey, J! I’m glad you were able to find where we are,” Melinda Doolittle said, coming over to join in on the conversation. She hugged her best friend.
Jordin hugged her tightly back. “Thanks for staying with me on my cell phone and leading me to the right spot.”
“Not a problem Darling,” Melinda said. They grinned at each other.
“You two keep acting like that and calling each other names like Darling, and soon people will start to think you two are gay too. And since people thought Chris and Blake were a couple and they turned out to be, people will hold on to the fact that you two will be too.”
The five friends turned around to see Chris Sligh coming over to them.
“You’re disgusting,” Jordin said, wrinkling her nose at him.
He held up his hands. “I’m just sayin!”
“Women can get away with that stuff. Women can share clothes and do each other’s hair and nails, and no one thinks a thing of it. However, the second guys start sharing clothes or doing each other's hair, they are fags,” Blake said.
“You and Chris share clothes all the time, and you guys are fags!”
Blake glared at Sanjaya Malakar, who had just come over to their group. He had known who had said that even before looking. It had been about ten months since the tour had ended, but Blake could tell that Sanjaya was still as annoying as ever. The switch from seventeen to eighteen had done nothing for the kid.
“I’m not even going to justify that with an answer,” Blake said. It wasn’t like he didn’t like the kid. He actually kind of did. He enjoyed bantering with him. He would never tell Sanjaya that though.
“You just answered,” Sanjaya said.
Blake rolled his eyes.
“So, what are you guys talking about?” Phil Stacey said, coming over to his friends with Haley Scarnato.
“We’re talking about how gay Blake is,” Sanjaya said.
“We are not!” Blake protested. Even though he was in a relationship with Chris and loved him very much, he still didn’t like to admit that he was gay. Every once in a while, he would check out women and be very vocal about it, just to cover up his insecurities about being gay.
Haley giggled. “You are rather gay. I always thought it was funny when you tried to claim you were straight. You kept the straight front up on the show, on the tour, and even afterwards for a while. Honestly? Not many people were buying it.”
Phil grinned. “I had a lot of people asking me if Chris and Blake were in a relationship even before Blake and Chris officially came out. I tried to help you guys hide it, but it just wasn’t happening. You guys were just too obvious.”
Chris smiled, and looked over at Blake, who was flushing a bright red. “More people thought Blake was gay than they did me.”
“I don’t know why. I don’t look or act gay,” Blake mumbled.
His eight friends burst into laughter.
“What are you laughing at? I do not look or act gay!” Blake whined. He stomped his foot. He was being serious, but it only made his friends laugh harder.
“All right, what did I miss? I walk away for ten minutes to go to the bathroom, and I come back and I missed something funny,” LaKisha Jones said, finally making it over to her friends.
“Blake just said he doesn’t look and act gay,” Gina told her.
Lakisha burst into hysterical laughter instantly. “You’re right, that is funny!”
Blake just shook his head and rolled his eyes. “You guys are all a bunch of frigging punks,” he said.
“We’re sorry, baby. It’s not such a bad thing though. I find it sexy.” Chris kissed the side of Blake’s neck.
Blake tilted Chris’ chin up and kissed his lips.
Sanjaya mad a face. “Yuck!”
“I think it’s sweet.” Jordin said.
“I think it’s hot!” Gina quipped.
“Here, here,” Haley agreed, clinking her beer bottle against Gina’s in a toast.
“You guys are a bunch of perverts,” Sligh stated. “I’m hungry.”
“What’s new? You can eat more than anyone I know,” LaKisha said.
“Hey. There is a lot of room in this stomach. I need to keep it filled.” Sligh pat his stomach for emphasis.
“We’ll eat after the fireworks. We don’t want to miss them,” Melinda said, looking Heavenward. “God has blessed us with such a beautiful night. Look at all those stars. It’s not too chilly or hot either. Everything is just beautiful.”
“They’ll be starting soon. Let’s get a good spot,” Phil said.
The other’s agreed, and followed him to a nice spot on the grass.
They had brought five blankets, and had paired off two-by-two on them with Chris and Blake on one, Sanjaya and Lakisha on another, Melinda and Jordin on the next, Sligh and Phil on another, and finally, Haley and Gina on the last one.
“It’s a good thing we have blankets. I would hate to get grass stains on my new skirt,” Haley commented.
“Why did you wear a skirt to something like this anyway?” Gina asked.
Haley smiled. “I always like to look good.”
“You can do that without bearing your skin,” Melinda said.
Haley rolled her eyes. “Everyone’s a critic.”
Five minutes later, the fireworks began. Chris held Blake close, and kissed his cheek.
Blake smiled up at him and rested his head against Chris shoulder.
Sanjaya and LaKisha were pointing out their favorite fireworks to each other. Sanjaya liked the blue ones. LaKisha liked the purple ones.
Jordin and Melinda watched in awe. Both women were strong Christians, and were awed by not only the fireworks, but the beauty of God’s creation that was all around them.
Sligh and Phil sat back and enjoyed. Sligh thought of how hungry he was, and how he could hardly wait to eat. Phil was thinking of how he wished his wife, Kendra, could see these. His wife was at home with the kids, who had both come down with chickenpox. He was going to stay back, but his wife had insisted he go to the reunion.
Gina thought about her fiance, Joe, whom she would soon be marrying. She bet he would have loved this. He was away with a friend on a skiing trip in the Swiss Alps. His friend was rich, and had offered to pay for the whole trip. Joe was going to turn it down, but Gina insisted that he go and have a good time. They would have the rest of their lives to be together.
Haley had broken up with her fiance. She was all right with it though. She had loved him, but sometimes things just didn’t work out. There were other fish in the sea, and she was very eager to start fishing again. She loved boys as much as Sligh loved food. She enjoyed the fireworks, daydreaming of the perfect man, whomever he might be.
2
When the fireworks ended, they packed up their blankets.
“What a bunch of animals! Look at all the people here. Like Niagara Falls its the only place to go for the holidays,” Phil grumbled.
“It’s not like you to complain. What happened to the peace maker Phil I know and love?” Melinda asked, walking beside him now, and resting her head on his shoulder.
Phil smiled at her, and placed a hand on her back. “You’re right. I suppose I shouldn't complain. After all, we’re contributing to the animals.”
Melinda grinned.
"All right. Let’s drop the blankets off at the hotel, and then go eat. I’m starved!” Sligh said.
Jordin rolled her eyes. “So we’ve heard. Where’s Sarah?”
“My wife thought she’d let us have our time together, just the ten of us. She is going to stay back and keep Kendra company. She's had the chickenpox before,” Sligh answered.
Phil grinned. “I’m glad we live close to each other.”
Me too,” Sligh said, grinning as well. He and Phil had become closer to each other than they were to the other idols.
“Has Kendra has the chickenpox before?” Jordin asked.
Phil nodded. “Yes, we’ve both had them before, thank God.”
They walked back to their hotel then, for it was within walking distance from the falls and Clifton Hill. It was by the grace of God that they had gotten a hotel so close to the falls. It also helped that they had booked a couple months in advance, but still…
After dropping the blankets off, they headed out again.
They went to Clifton Hill to find a place to eat there. There were a lot of places to choose from, and this time of year, everything stayed open late, so they were sure to find a good place.
They all agreed upon a place Called Rumors Cafe, and got seated there.
“It figures we have to leave tomorrow. We barely got a day in together,” Jordin said after they had all ordered.
“I know, but at least we got this in. We’re lucky we even got that,” Gina stated.
Sligh nodded. “At least we don’t have flights until later. Maybe we can all do lunch together before we have to head for the airport.”
“Speak for yourselves. I have to get up at eight in the morning to catch my eleven o’clock flight. I have a family dinner thing that my parents made me promise I’d be back on time for,” Sanjaya said. He rolled his eyes. He loved his family. He loved them a lot. Still, he was getting tired of being the baby of the family. They were taking the baby thing a little bit too literally for his taste.
“I’d say we could still do breakfast with you then, but there ain’t no way I’m getting up that early when my flight doesn’t leave until three,” Melinda said.
“I wouldn’t have time anyway. I’ll take an hour to get ready and to the airport, if not more. Plus, you know they like you to be at the airport two hours in advance. It’s such a pain,” Sanjaya grumbled.
“Haley, Phil and I are on the same flight as Melinda, so we’ll have plenty of time for lunch first. Thank God. Airplane food is too stingy, and the food at the airport is too expensive,” Sligh commented. He, Haley, Phil, and Melinda all lived in Nashville.
Gina rolled her eyes. “You and your food. My flight leaves at two, but I should be able to have a quick lunch with y’all tomorrow.” Gina lived in her hometown of Illinois still, since her career had yet to take off.
“I don’t have any other obligations tomorrow, so unlike Sanjaya, I am taking the three o'clock flight back to LA,” Jordin quipped. She glanced at Sanjaya with a mischievous smirk. She was younger than Sanjaya by thee months, but by far had much more freedom as an adult than he did.
“Rub it in,” Sanjaya said.
“I just did.” She grinned even wider, and winked at him.
He rolled his eyes.
“Are you two love birds flying out together?” Gina asked Blake and Chris. Blake and Chris had a place together in LA, but alternated going to Blake's hometown of Bothell, Washington and Chris’ hometown of Chesapeake, Virginia whenever they got a free chance to do so.
Chris wrapped an arm around Blake. “Yep! We’re going to Virginia for a few days, then we’re flying back to LA so we can get ready for the second leg of his tour.
Gina turned her attention to Blake. “Who’s opening for you?”
“Chris is. He just finished his album, and he’s going to tour with me to promote it. I’m surprised you didn’t know that,” Blake said.
Gina rolled her eyes. “How would I know? No one but Haley ever calls me.”
“I’m gonna call you every day just to shut you up,” Sligh said.
Gina smiled fakely at him. “I love you too Sligh.”
Their drinks came, and there was a brief silence as they all sipped their drinks thoughtfully.
“So, do you think we’ll all be friends in ten years?” Phil asked out of the blue.
“Of course we will be. I love you guys,” Jordin said, smiling brightly, and wrapping her arms around Melinda and Haley, who were on either side of her.
“Yeah, I have no doubts we’ll be having get togethers like this for years to come,” Melinda stated, grinning at Jordin, and then Phil.
The others voiced their agreement.
“We’re going to be friends forever, and nothing’s gonna stop us!” Blake added, his right arm around Chris, and his other hand clutching his drink.
“Let’s toast to that,” Haley suggested. “To being friends for life.”
“Friends for life!” the others echoed.
They all clinked their glasses and drank up. None of the ten knew how much their life would change within the next hour or so, and how much it would affect all ten of them in the said ten years.
3
Dinner went well. The ten friends enjoyed reminiscing of the old days, although the “old days” really weren’t that long ago. They had laughed, and joked, and had a great time.
“All right, who wants dessert?” the waitress asked.
“He does!” Sligh’s nine friends said in unison as they all pointed to him.
Sligh grinned, and gave her his dessert order. “My friends know me all too well.”
“I could go for something, but I’m not overly hungry,” Blake said. He looked at Chris. “Wanna share something, honey?”
Chris nodded. “Yeah. Want to share the chocolate cake?”
Blake nodded as well. “Sounds good!” He turned to the waitress. “One slice of chocolate cake and an extra plate please.”
Everyone but Haley and Jordin decided to get dessert.
“I’m stuffed, and I have to watch my figure. I’m all set,” Haley told the waitress.
Jordin nodded. “Same here.”
“All right. I’ll bring those desserts right away,” the waitress said after getting all the orders. She walked off to put the orders in.
Haley stretched and yawned. “I hope it doesn’t take yawl long to eat. I’m exhausted.”
Jordin yawned as well. “Me too.”
Gina nodded. “I am too, now that you mention it. I can’t go to bed still hungry though. Otherwise I’ll be up all night until I eat.
“I know the feeling,” Sligh said.
“I’m sure you do,” Sanjaya said under his breath. It wasn’t as if Sligh were a cow. He was overweight, yes. But he really wasn’t huge. Just slightly overweight. It was just that the boy always liked to eat. Sanjaya was surprised Sligh wasn’t bigger than he was.
Everyone talked a bit more, and then their food came out shortly after.
“While you guys are eating, I’m going to freshen up,” Haley said, standing up to go to the bathroom.
“Freshen up? Why, girl? We’re only going back to the hotel after this,” Gina stated.
“I know, but I always like to look my best.” Haley winked.
“I’ll go with you. I have to pee,” Jordin stated.
“Oh that’s charming,” Sligh said, rolling his eyes.
Jordin stuck her tongue out at him and smiled, and then headed to the bathroom with Haley.
Five minutes later, the girls came out of the bathroom and headed back to the table. They found that Gina, LaKisha, Chris and Blake were done, but Sligh, Phil, and Sanjaya were still munching. The bill was on the table.
“How long does it take to eat your dessert?” Haley asked.
“I like to savor my food, thank you,” Sligh replied.
“I’m almost done,” Phil stated.
“I am getting full, so I’m eating slow,” Sanjaya said.
“Well I’m tired of waiting.” Haley looked at the bill, and then dished out her share. “I want to start heading back now.”
“We’ll go with you,” Gina told her, nodding towards Jordin and Melinda, and then to LaKisha.
The girls nodded their agreement, and they all looked at the bill and set down their share of the bill and tip.
“You could wait for us, you know. I’m not going to take that long to finish,” Sligh stated.
“You can catch up,” Haley said.
Sligh shrugged. “Suit yourself!”
The girls then left the restaurant, and began to walk back towards their hotel.
“I’m glad it’s not winter. It would be a bitch to walk back in,” Gina said as she and her four friends walked down the streets of Clifton Hill.
“Tell me about it! I can’t imagine walking this distance if it were snowing out.” Jordin rubbed her arms as if the thought alone made her cold.
The girls walked until they got to the falls.
“Let’s stop for a moment. I am getting tired,” LaKisha requested. “I need to get back into shape.”
“It sure cleared out here,” Gina said, noticing how, now that the fireworks were over, they seemed to be the only people there. Everyone else must have been at their hotels or back on Clifton Hill, she thought. “We’re suddenly all alone.”
“Except for that cutie.” Haley nodded a few feet away to a handsome guy who looked to be in his early thirties.
The guy, who had been leaning against the rail and looking over at the falls, suddenly tuned to look at them. It was as if he had heard Haley’s comment, though it wasn't possible since he was a few feet away, and Haley had spoken quietly.
“He’s walking towards us. Gosh I hope he isn’t some kind of creep,” Gina stated. She didn’t feel comfortable being alone with a strange guy in a deserted area, just her and her four female friends.
“He’s cute! Don’t be so paranoid,” Haley said, flashing her best smile at the guy.
The guy came over to them, and smiled, displaying a mouthful of perfect white teeth. “Hello, ladies! You’re all from that Idol show, aren’t you?”
Haley continued to smile, and batted her eyelashes at him. “Why yes, we are. Are you a fan?”
“You all are beautiful. How could I not be?” he asked.
Haley giggled.
Gina fought to not roll her eyes.
“So, what are you ladies doing out so late?” he asked.
“We saw the fireworks, then had a late dinner. We were just walking back to our hotel now,” Melinda spoke up.
The guy turned to her. “Would you like an escort back? It’s not to safe for ladies like yourselves to be heading back all by yourselves. You never know what kind of weirdoes there are out there.”
“We’re with our guy friends. They’re on their way, so we’ll be okay. But thanks for worrying,” Jordin said.
“You’re Jordin Sparks, the winner, right?” the guy asked, extending his hand to Jordin. “I’m Henry Clay.”
Jordin hesitated for a moment, then, not wanting to be rude, she shook his hand and smiled. “Yes, I am. Hello, Henry. It’s so nice to meet you.”
Henry shook Jordin’s hand, and then turned his attention back to Haley.
Gina noticed Henry glancing down Haley’s low-cut blouse. It appeared to her that Haley noticed this too, but didn’t seem to mind.
“So, are you sure you don’t need me to walk you guys home?” he asked.
“Our friends will be along at any moment. Besides. I’m tough.” LaKisha cracked her knuckles for emphasis. “I can take care of us.”
Henry focused his eyes on Lakisha for the briefest of moments before turning them back to Haley. “Are you single?”
Haley laughed, and twirled a strand of hair around her finger. “Yeah. I was engaged, but my fiance and I broke it off a while back.”
“I’m usually not so forward, but would you be interested in going out with me? I can take you back to your hotel and buy you a drink at the bar. Then, if you want, I can show you an even better time up in your room.”
Haley stepped back a bit. “Um, thanks but no thanks. I have an early flight to catch tomorrow, and I really don’t want to stay up that late.” She loved boys, but not pushy boys who only had one thing on their minds. Cute or not, this guy didn’t even know her! It was a major turn off.
He stepped closer to her again. “Aw, come on. I think a girl like you is used to staying up late and having a good time. There’s no need to be shy with me, baby. I don’t bite...unless you want me to.” He reached out and ran a finger slowly down the exposed valley of Haley’s chest.
Haley slapped his hand away. “I think you should go now.”
Lakisha stepped forward. “You heard the woman. Step aside. Now before you get hurt.”
Henry laughed. “A little jealous are we? Don’t worry. There’s plenty of me to go around. I can do you next. You’re a little big for my taste, but why not? I’m feeling generous tonight.”
Lakisha slapped Henry hard across the face.
Henry was stunned. He held his cheek for just a moment before whipping out his hand so fast, that Lakisha and the others hadn’t seen it coming. He grabbed onto LaKisha’s hair. “You’re going to pay for that, you nigger bitch.”
LaKisha cried out in pain. She tried to push Henry away, but his grip on her hair remained firm.
Jordin cried out, and jumped back.
Melinda and Gina ran forward to try to pry Henry off of LaKisha.
Haley was frozen in fear.
“What is going on here?” Sligh asked, getting to the group first. The other four boys were right behind him. He walked over to Henry, and easily pried him off Lakisha. “What the hell are you doing to my friend?” He gave Henry a hard push, causing Henry to almost fall backwards in the grass.
“The son of a bitch tried to attack Haley. LaKisha told him to head home, he tried to hit on her. LaKisha slapped him n return, and then he grabbed her hair,” Gina explained.
“Is this true? You messing with my friends? Hm? Cuz I don’t like people messing with my friends,” Blake said, stepping up beside Sligh to face Henry.
Henry scoffed. “Oh please! Look at the way she dresses!” He waked over to Haley, and grabbed her. “You’re just asking for it, wearing that short little skirt, aren’t you baby?” He ran a hand up her leg.
“Get off me!” Haley cried out, trying to push him away.
Blake had seen enough. He walked over to Henry and pried him off Haley. “Don’t you ever touch her again! Do you hear me? Don’t you ever!” He punched Henry hard across the jaw.
Henry stumbled backwards on the grass, and once again, came close to falling, but he didn’t. He put a hand to his jaw, and when he brought it back to look at it, it was covered with blood. He looked at Blake and laughed. “You’re a dead man, fag boy. If you were jealous, all you had to do was ask. I’d let you suck it.” Henry pat his own crotch. “But now that you just did that, I’m going to have to hurt you. Heck, maybe I’ll make you take me all down, rather you can fit it or not. I’ll make you gag, and then I’ll put it in you and—” Henry didn’t get his sentence out before Chris tuned him roughly around and punched him hard across the face, and then in the stomach. “You’re not going to lay a finger on him, you son of a bitch!” He kicked Henry’s shins, causing Henry to fall to the ground with a loud moan of pain. “If you ever touch him I swear I’ll kill you with my own two hands.” He gave Henry one last kick, and then headed over to Blake, and took him in his arms. “Are you all right?”
Blake nodded. “I’m fine. I think you taught him a good lesson.” He grinned at Chris and kissed him. He was inappropriately turned on by this.
Haley and Jordin were sobbing hysterically now.
Gina had her arms around Haley, and Sanjaya had his arm around Jordin.
Melinda had an arm around Jordin as well, but was distracted by the sight of Henry standing up. “He’s getting up!” She pointed, just as Henry stood up.
“Move along now, before you get hurt some more,” Sligh said, getting in Henry’s face.
“I don’t think so, fatty!” Henry lunged for Sligh, but Sligh ducked out of the way.
Phil grabbed Henry from behind, and Henry immediately struggled to get free. “I guess someone needs another lesson,” Phil said. Phil wasn’t a fighter; he was a peace maker. But this guy was going too far, and was really starting to tick him off.
However, Henry was strong, and before Phil could even think about throwing a punch, Henry broke free, and walked over to Gina. “You’d enjoy a little bit of Henry, right?” He grabbed Gina’s breasts.
“Get away from me!” Gina screamed.
Phil wasn’t the only one who had had enough. They had all had enough.
Gina gave Henry a punch to the jaw at the same time Haley kicked him hard in the groin.
Henry cried out in pain, and stumbled backwards.
Blake gave Henry a hard push, causing Henry to fall against the railing.
Sligh punched Henry in the jaw again, and Jordin gave him a kick to the groin.
“You get the heck away from us, you hear?” Jordin screamed. Her good-girl demure was long gone for the time being.
“It’s guys like you that give men a bad name,” Melinda said, slapping Henry hard across the face.
Henry moaned, in pain.
LaKisha wasn't satisfied. She gave him a punch to the groin.
Henry screamed in pain.
“Maybe next time you'll think twice before assaulting women!” LaKisha screamed.
“Now move along,” Chris said, wrapping a hand around Henry’s throat, and pushing him backwards into the metal rail.
“You big bully!” Sanjaya screamed, stomping on Henry’s foot.
“Those girls are just asking to be raped. Every single one of them,” Henry said.
That was the last straw. Phil was tired of being the peace maker. He gave Henry one last punch to the face, hitting his nose so hard that he felt the sting in his hand.
Apparently, he hit a little too hard, for in one swift motion, Henry flew over the railing.
“Oh my gosh!” Gina covered her mouth.
Everyone rushed to the railing and looked down to see that Henry had fallen into the water, having hit his head on a rock, as he landed. The current was rapidly pushing him towards the falls.
4
“We have to save him!” Phil said.
“We can’t! We’d never make it down on time. We’d have to find the embankment area,” Sanjaya said.
“We can’t just let him die! He may have been a creep, but we can’t let a man die, no matter how
bad he was,” Jordin said, tears in her eyes. But even as she said it, she knew there was no hope.
All the ten friends could do was watch in horror as Henry’s unconscious body rushed towards the falls, and fell down the long Canadian water fall to his watery grave.
“We should go get help. We need to report this to the cops,” Jordin said, bursting into a fresh round of tears.
“I don’t want to go to jail,” Sanjaya said, tears in his own eyes.
“We won’t go to jail if we just explain what happened,” Melinda said.
“As far as I see it, the son of a bitch got what he deserved. No one saw a thing. No one’s around.” Sligh motioned with his hand around the area. The area was deserted.
“So you’re saying we should just pretend this never happened?” Jordin asked, sounding disgusted.
“Why not? Sligh is right. That son of a bitch tried to molest Haley and me. Why should we even risk getting in trouble because of him?” Gina asked.
Haley nodded her agreement.
“I think we should tell the cops,” Chris said.
“Why, baby? No one saw what happened. Why risk getting in trouble?” Blake asked.
“It’s our word against no one else’s to prove us wrong. We have to tell,” Melinda said.
“Couldn’t we still get in trouble for involuntary man slaughter? I mean, we did beat the crap out of the guy. Whether or not we had a good reason to is beside the point,” Sanjaya said, quietly, but loud enough for his friends to hear him.
No one said anything.
“Phil, what do you think?” Sligh finally asked.
They all looked at Phil, who hadn’t said a word about this yet.
Phil didn’t say anything at first, and then he spoke, his voice as quiet as Sanjaya’s had been. “I think we should go back to the hotel now. I didn’t see anything happen.”
“Phil, are you serious? Good ol’ Phil Stacey wants to cover up a murder? It’s wrong, and you know it!” Melinda said.
Phil turned to her. “Please, Melinda! I have kids and a family. Sanjaya’s right. Whether he deserved what he got or not, we abused him. I was the one that gave him the final punch to send him to his death.”
“But you didn’t intend to kill him!” Melinda insisted.
“I know that, but it is still involuntary man slaughter. I could still be put in jail—maybe even longer than you guys. I can’t do that to my wife, and I can’t do that to my kids,” Phil said.
“I don’t want to do that to my daughter either, come to think of it,” Lakisha said.
“Or my wife,” Sligh piped in.
“Or Joe,” Gina said.
“I’m not going to be separated from you,” Blake said, holding on to Chris. “And we have to think of our careers.” He looked at the others. “We all do. Imagine how this will look if this were to get out. It won’t matter if he deserved it, or if we didn’t meant to kill him. The bottom line is that he ended up dead, and it’s basically because of us.”
“Please, guys. Can we keep quiet? I never asked you guys for much. Please just do this for me. Let’s just go, and forget this ever happened, all right?” Phil asked.
“I think we should all take a vote on this,” Sligh said. “All in favor of keeping this quiet, and never telling a soul, put your hand in.” He put his hand out. “This doesn’t leave our circle of friends. We tell no one. Not our significant others, not our families, not our other friends, no one.”
Phil put his hand on top of Sligh’s, and Blake put his hand on top of Phil’s. Gina put her hand on top of Blake’s, and Haley put her hand on top of Gina’s. LaKisha was the next to put her hand out, and then Sanjaya. Chris hesitated for a moment, then put his hand on top of Sanjaya’s.
They all looked at Jordin and Melinda, who were the only two who hadn’t put their hands in yet.
“Guys, please. Do it for me? He’s dead. What more can we do?” Phil asked.
“His family is going to wonder what happened to him,” Jordin said.
“We’re saving them the pain of finding out what kind of man he was. Besides, who’s to say he even has family?” Sligh asked.
Melinda sighed, and put her hand in. “I‘m not saying this is right, but I’ll do it for Phil.”
Jordin cried again. “I’m so going to hell for this.” She put her hand out as well.
“You’re not going to hell, Jordin. Jesus died for our sins,” Sligh said. “Now let’s get out of here before someone starts getting suspicious.”
The others nodded, and then they all headed back to the hotel, not saying a word the whole way there.

“I miss you too, baby. I can hardly wait to see you tomorrow. Give the kids a kiss for me. Tell them their daddy loves them. I love you too. Bye.” Phil hung up the phone, and then threw himself down onto the bed, and stared up at the ceiling. He had tears in his eyes. “Please forgive me, Lord, but I did what I had to,” he said out loud. He couldn’t go to jail. He had his wife and kids to think about. Besides, the guy was dead. What was going to jail going to do? Nothing. He was doing the right thing by keeping his mouth shut. No good would come out of telling the cops anyway.
If that were the case, then why did he feel so bad?
“Haley, are you all right?” Gina asked, when she came out of the bathroom of the hotel room that she shared with Haley. Haley was sitting on her bed with her hands on her face. She was sobbing.
Gina sat down on Haley’s bed next to her, and placed an arm around her.
Haley looked up at her with tear-streaked cheeks. “Do you think we did the right thing by not going to the cops?”
Gina nodded, and held Haley tighter. “Don’t worry about it. We didn’t mean for him to die. He shouldn’t have tried to attack us. I know he didn’t deserve to die for it, but he did die, and there isn’t anything we can do. I don’t mean to sound cold.”
“It’s all my fault.” Haley sniffled. “I shouldn’t always dress like a slut. I send across the wrong signal.”
“Haley, you do not dress like a slut. Trust me, I’ve seen girls dress like sluts, and you’re not one of them.” Gina rested her head against Haley’s. “He attacked us. No means no. He didn’t understand that concept. If it’s anyone’s fault he died, it’s his own. If he had just left us alone…” Gina trailed off. As far as she was concerned, the creep had gotten what was coming to him. If she could have kept him alive, she would have, but since he died, oh well. There was nothing they could do about it now.
“I guess you’re right,” Haley said. She sniffled. I just want to go to sleep now.”
Gina nodded. “All right.” She gave her friend one last squeeze. “Good night.”
“Goodnight,” Haley whispered.
Gina went over to her own bed and climbed in. She flicked off the lights, and that was that for the night.
As Haley closed her eyes, she hoped to God that she wouldn’t be haunted by this night for the rest of her life. Though, deep down, she knew she would be.
“Melinda?” Jordin asked as they lay in the dark in their beds in their shared hotel room.
“What is it, sweetie?” Melinda asked.
“Do you think God can forgive us for what we did? I don’t want to go to hell.”
Melinda was silent for a moment. “We won’t go to hell, Jordin. God forgives all sins as long as we ask for forgiveness. Besides, we didn’t mean to kill him. It was self-defense.”
“But when we were attacking him, he had stopped attacking us. We should have stopped too then. I think we might have gone too far.” Jordin sobbed again.
Melinda sighed. “The fact remains, we didn't mean to kill him. We’re going to be all right. God won’t send us to hell. I promise you.”
“Thank you Melinda. I needed to hear that.” Jordin turned on her side.
Across the room, Melinda turned on her own side to face Jordin. She gave her a reassuring smile. “Don’t worry. It’s the truth.”
“Goodnight, Melinda,” Jordin said, closing her eyes.
“Goodnight, Jordin,” Melinda replied. She was going to tell her to sleep well, but she knew that after what happened that night, that was a real joke.
Please God, I don’t want to go to hell. Please forgive us for what we did. We didn’t mean to kill him, Jordin silently prayed before drifting off to sleep.
Forgive us Lord. Please, Melinda thought before drifting off to sleep as well.
Sligh lay in his bed in the dark, thinking about his wife, Sara. She would be so disappointed in him if he ever told her what had happened. She didn’t believe in violence. She would be even more disappointed in him if she found out he helped to kill a man—even though he hadn’t mean to. He normally told her everything, but this was something he was going to take to the grave. He didn’t want her to divorce him. No, she could never know about this. Not ever. “I’m sorry, Lord. Please forgive me and have mercy on my soul,” Sligh muttered out loud as he drifted off to sleep in the dark.
“You’re not going to hold this against me, right God?” LaKisha asked, looking up at the sky from her hotel window. “He had it coming. He wouldn’t leave us alone. We couldn’t just let him attack us like that. Why should we have to pay when we were just trying to defend ourselves? We didn’t mean to kill him. I just happened. It was an accident. What good would us going to jail do? My daughter needs me. She needs her momma. Please forgive me, Jesus. I promise nothing like this will ever happen again. Thank you. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.” Lakisha blew a kiss Heavenward, and then tuned off the lights and climbed into bed. She laid her hands down on her pillow in a face down prayer position, and then rested her head on her hands. She then closed her eyes, the whispered words of “never again” falling from her lips right before she drifted off to sleep.
Sanjaya lay in bed in the dark. The curtains were pulled, and the only light was from the bathroom’s night light. In his head, he could see the whole scene playing out again. He saw everything from Henry squeezing Gina’s chest, to them beating him up, finally resulting in Henry’s fall to his death over the falls. “We did what we had to do. Why pay for his sins?” Sanjaya asked quietly to the empty room as he drifted off to sleep.
Blake held Chris tightly from behind in their bed. He could feel Chris shaking in his arms, and could very faintly hear Chris' sobs.
“Sh, baby it’s all right. It wasn’t your fault,” Blake quietly soothed.
Chris turned around, his green eyes streaked with tears. “I didn't mean it when I told him I’d kill him with my own to hands. When he threatened to do all those horrible things to you, I… I wanted to hurt him, but I never meant I’d actually kill him. It was an accident, Blake! I never thought he would...I never thought he would actually die!” He buried his face against Blake’s chest, and burst into tears
“Sh… I know. Don’t worry. It was all an accident. God knows that. God knows all, right?” Blake wasn’t overly religious, but he knew that Chris was a Christian, and he wanted to do his best to comfort Chris.
“God won’t hate me, right?” Chris asked, looking up into Blake’s eyes.
Blake’s heart broke when he saw that Chris’ eyes were filled with tears still. “Chris, God doesn’t hate. I know that much. God loves you unconditionally; just as I do.” He kissed Chris.
“Make love to me, Blakey? Please?” I need you.”
Blake nodded. “Of course.” He straddled Chris, kissing his lips softly. He wanted to take away Chris’ pain. They both needed this. They needed to get Henry Clay and this horrible night off their minds.
It worked...for the time being. But little did Blake Lewis know, this was not something that was going to stay away. Didn't anyone ever tell him the past will always come back to haunt you?
