The phone was ringing. The goddamn phone was ringing. Bam groaned as he reached over and picked it up. He hadn’t been sleeping anyway, but that didn’t really mean that he was up for a conversation or anything like that.
“Hello?” his voice was hushed.
“B-Bam?” someone stammered. Bam blinked a few times. Was it…? It couldn’t be.
“Ville?”
“Yeah,” oh sweet Jesus, it was! How long had it been since they had talked? Not since the wedding. He knew it probably hurt too much. He didn’t want to press the issue, no matter how much he longed to hear the voice, to see the smile of the other man.
“Why are you calling so late?” he didn’t raise his voice.
“I—I just.” A shaky breath. Oh God, he was crying. Bam felt any anger he might have felt melt away.
“What’s the matter?” he asked. He slid his legs out of bed, tiptoed out of the room. He made his way downstairs to sit on the couch.
“I couldn’t sleep.”
Honey, why you calling me so late?
It’s kind of hard to talk right now.
Honey, why you crying?
Is everything okay?
I’ve gotta whisper because I can’t be too loud.
“Why couldn’t you sleep?”
“How are you, Bam?” Ville clearly didn’t want to discuss it right now. That was okay, he thought. God, it was just good it hear him talking. Warmth was spreading throughout his body. It had started in his chest and was now slowly making its way to his fingertips and toes.
“I’m… I’m okay. It’s nice to talk to you.”
“It’s nice to talk to you, too.” He was calming down now. Bam waited for the click of the lighter, the inhale of the cigarette. He was not disappointed. The sounds calmed him. Calmed him? Had he been upset?
He glanced towards the stairs. There was something wrong with doing this. Missy was asleep, right there. But was what was so wrong in just talking to a friend?
Friend… Was that what he had to call Ville now?
Well, my girl’s in the next room.
Sometimes I wish she was you.
I guess we never really moved on.
“Bam? Bammie, are you okay?” concern now in that heavy voice. Bam jumped. He hadn’t registered that Ville had been talking.
“I’m fine,” he reassured him. He smiled. Bammie. How long had it been since someone had called him that? Clearly too long.
“You were worrying me. I was talking and I wasn’t even sure you were there. I was scared you had hung up on me.”
“I’d never hang up on you.” He said softly.
It’s really good to hear your voice,
Saying my name,
It sounds so sweet.
Coming from the lips of an angel,
Hearing those words it makes me weak.
And I,
Never wanna say goodbye.
But girl, you make it hard to be faithful.
With the lips of an angel.
“Tell me why you called.” Bam demanded. There was no malice in the demand. That was the way their relationship always went. Bam asked, and Ville gave. The singer sighed on the other end.
“It’s silly.”
“Tell me anyway,”
“You’ll laugh.” He sounded like a weary child.
“No I won’t.”
“You always do!” okay, he had a point. Bam usually did laugh. There was a pain deep inside of him (could it be in his heart? Maybe. Best not to think about, really) that he would make the other man feel that way. That had never been his attention.
Then again, none of this relationship had ever gone the way he intended.
“I won’t this time.” He promised.
“I…I had a dream about you.”
“Really?”
“Mmmhmm.”
“Oh,” there was a pause while he took a deep breath. “I did too.” He had. That was what had woken him up.
The worst part about it was that it was a good dream.
“Oh!” surprise on the singer’s part. There were quiet for a minute.
It’s funny that you’re calling me tonight,
And yes,
I dreamed of you too.
“Does Missy know you’re talking to me?” he asked.
“Does Mige?” Bam shot back. He wasn’t stupid; he knew what was going on between the two of them.
“No,”
“He doesn’t want you to, does he?” yes, he certainly was good at reading between the lines.
“No. But that’s not why I haven’t.”
“I know,” the skater told him softly. The last thing he wanted to do tonight was fight with him. He just wanted to hear him speak, just wanted to pretend, even for a little while, that none of this had happened. He wasn’t married, he was with Ville, and he would be home soon.
Pretending could make everything all better, if only for a little while.
“Does Missy know?”
“No. She’s out cold,” Bam leaned back on the couch, looked up at the ceiling, willing her to stay asleep.
“I don’t think she could stop me anyway, though.”
“No one ever could.” Ville chuckled now. The sound of it seemed to light a fire inside of Bam’s chest. He grinned. He sounded so dork when he laughed, and he couldn’t believe it but… He had missed the sound of it.
He had missed the way Ville laughed.
And does he know you’re talking to me?
Will it start a fight?
No, I don’t think she has a clue.
Well, my girl’s in the next room.
Sometimes I wish she was you.
I guess we never really moved on.
“Bam,” Ville said softly.
“Ville,” he said in returned. The silence stretched out between them. It wasn’t uncomfortable at all. It was nice. It was almost like some of the aching pain between them was being healed.
“I miss you.”
“Do you?” he swallowed, not daring to believe it.
“Yes. Will you come and see me?”
“I…I…” he wanted to. Oh God, how badly he wanted to. To be there with that man again, to have the world return to the way it was supposed to be. But he knew how it would end. And was that really fair to Missy? She hadn’t known when they got married, still didn’t.
It’s really good to hear your voice,
Saying my name,
It sounds so sweet.
Coming from the lips of an angel,
Hearing those words it makes me weak.
And I never wanna say goodbye,
But girl you make it hard to be faithful.
With the lips of an angel.
“Please say you will.” Ville whispered.
“You know that I can’t.”
“I know.” Disappointment, the same misery that had been there when Bam first answered the phone.
“But I wanted to ask anyway.”
“I miss you, Ville.”
“I know,”
“You’re going to call me again, aren’t you?” he was desperate to hear the man say he would. He knew in that moment he couldn’t live without hearing the voice again, without having his name roll off Ville’s tongue.
“Yes,”
“Promise me!” he insisted.
“Bammie, I promise.”
“All right,” there was another pause.
It’s really good to hear your voice,
Saying my name it sounds so sweet.
Coming from the lips of an angel,
Hearing those words it makes me weak.
And I never wanna say goodbye.
“I should go. Missy will wonder if she wakes up.”
“Yes,” Ville agreed. “Bam?”
“Yes?”
“I love you.”
“I love you, too.”
(Never wanna say goodbye.)
But girl you make it hard to be faithful.
“Goodnight, Bammie.” The line went dead in his hand. Bam swallowed again, slumped down on the couch. He couldn’t quite bring himself to go upstairs just yet. He needed a few minutes.
“Oh, Ville.” He whispered. He stood up after a few minutes, after his heart had stilled in his chest. Slowly, carefully, he went up the stairs. He lay down in his bed gingerly.
Missy rolled over in her sleep, curled up to his side. He put an arm around her shoulder, watched her nestle into him. He sighed. This was all going to be so unfair to her very soon. But then, if life was fair…
He bent to kiss her on the top of her head.
With the lips of an angel.
Honey why you calling me so late?
