Lily Elaine Fletcher glanced around the park with a sigh. She had specifically told her sister to meet her by the fountain in the park at noon. The church that sat next to the park had already chimed the quarter hour, and Elizabeth was nowhere to be seen. But then again, that was pretty much typical of her older sister. Elizabeth Anne Fletcher was always late.
Lily was just about to start making her way back towards their family’s home in Gracechurch Street when she spotted Elizabeth’s dark brown hair falling into her face as she ran towards the place they had decided to meet.
“I’m sorry I’m late, but I ran into Victoria, and she needed help picking out a new hat at the milliner’s shop,” Elizabeth explained, pushing her hair out of her face as she spoke.
“That took more than a quarter of an hour?” Lily asked, slightly annoyed at Elizabeth.
“It wouldn’t have, except George Ross showed up, and well, you know how Victoria gets when he’s around,” Elizabeth replied. Lily rolled her eyes. Victoria Asher was head-over-heels in love with George. He was a gentleman, certainly, but he was a bit of a bore. The man was not very well-read, nor was he eloquent in voicing his opinions. But he was rather handsome, and that seemed to be all that mattered to Miss Asher.
“I should have known that Mr. Ross had something to do with it the moment you mentioned that you had been with Miss Asher,” Lily replied.
Elizabeth scrunched up her nose as she smoothed back her hair and adjusted her hat. “What is your issue with Mr. Ross? He is a perfectly agreeable young gentleman, and there is nothing wrong with him at all.”
“Mr. Ross is a shallow, mundane human being. He is not good at conversation, he isn’t well-read at all. The only thing he really has going for him is his good looks. I have nothing against the man, but I can not find whatever it is that you and Miss Asher see as so agreeable in the man,” Lily replied. Elizabeth shook her head at Lily’s comments.
“There is nothing disagreeable about his character at all, Lily,” Elizabeth replied.
“I said nothing at all about his character, Eliza. I simply said that I do not find Mr. Ross as agreeable as you and Miss Asher seem to believe him to be,” Lily explained.
“Perhaps you should get to know people a bit better before you pass judgment on them,” a voice spoke up. Lily and Elizabeth both turned around, only to come face to face with George Ross, who was standing there with a pair of gloves in his hand. After a moment, he remembered the reason why he was standing there. He turned to Elizabeth and held the gloves out to her. “I believe this belong to you, Miss Fletcher,” he said. Elizabeth nodded and took the gloves from him.
“Thank you, Mr. Ross,” she replied, smiling at him slightly. He nodded.
“Good afternoon, ladies,” he said, before turning to walk away.
“Good afternoon, Mr. Ross,” Elizabeth replied. She gently nudged Lily, who was still unable to respond.
“Good afternoon, Mr. Ross,” she finally replied, speaking to his back. He did not make any sign that he heard her words, and she shook her head as she turned around to continue walking towards their home. “You could have warned me that he was standing right there, Lizzie,” Lily scolded. She only called her sister by that nickname when she was particularly annoyed with Elizabeth, mainly because they both hated it.
“I didn’t see him there, honestly Lily,” Elizabeth replied. “Besides, it’s your own fault you embarrassed yourself. If you had simply kept your mouth shut on your opinion of Mr. Ross, he never would have overheard what you said.”
Lily didn’t respond as she and Elizabeth turned onto the street in which their family lived. “It looks like our cousin has finally returned from Bath,” she said, nothing the young man climbing out of the carriage in front of their door. Elizabeth followed her gaze and smiled at the sight of their cousin looking in their direction.
Ryland Blackinton stood at the bottom of the stairs leading up to the front door of the Fletcher home, waiting to escort his cousins inside. “Good morning Miss Fletcher, Miss Lily,” he said as they walked up to him. He bowed slightly, prompting both of the young ladies to curtsey.
“Good morning, Mr. Blackinton. I trust you had a pleasant visit to Bath,” Elizabeth replied. She was very good at maintaining a conversation with Mr. Blackinton while not including Lily. It was a well known fact that the two were practically engaged to one another. It had come down to a matter of Ryland simply asking their father’s permission to marry Elizabeth.
“It was quite pleasant. I trust that you have all been well in my absence,” he replied. It took a moment for any of them to notice the second gentleman that had exited the carriage. Lily was the first of the two young ladies to notice his presence.
“Mr. Blackinton, are you not going to introduce us to your acquaintance?” she asked, smiling slightly at the handsome, dark-haired young man.
“My apologies. Miss Elizabeth and Miss Lily Fletcher, may I introduce Mr. Gabriel Saporta. Mr. Saporta is a friend of mine from Cambridge,” Ryland explained.
“How do you do?” the young man asked, bowing slightly to the ladies. They both curtsied in response.
“We happened to be in Bath at the same time, and I invited Mr. Saporta to spend a few days in London with me before he returns to his family’s estate in Derbyshire.”
“Insisted would be a more appropriate word,” Gabriel replied. “Although had he told me of the beauty of his cousins I would not have been so reluctant to come,” he added, his eyes on Lily as he spoke. It was obvious that he knew of Ryland’s affection for Elizabeth, who was generally thought of as the prettier of the two sisters. She was slightly taller than Lily, with eyes an unusual shade of pale blue and exceptionally fair skin. It was a sharp contrast with her dark brown hair.
Lily was certainly not plain, but her looks could not compare with her sister’s. Her blonde hair and slightly darker skin tone gave her the appearance of not belonging to the same family as her sister, and her eyes were a rather ordinary shade of dark blue. Yet she seemed to possess and inner calm and grace that Elizabeth often lacked.
“You flatter us too much. I am sure that there are plenty of attractive women in Derbyshire for you to choose from,” Lily replied.
“None quite as beautiful as the lovely young ladies I have met since coming to London,” he told her, smiling slightly. Lily couldn’t help but blush at the implications of Gabriel’s comment.
“It looks as though it might rain at any moment. Perhaps we should go inside to continue these conversations,” Elizabeth suggested. Lily glanced up at the sky, wondering where she had gotten that idea, but did not comment on the fact that the sky had barely even become overcast.
“Perhaps you are right, dear cousin. Besides, it would not do to have come all this way and not pay my respects to your parents,” Ryland replied. He eagerly held out an arm to escort the elder of the two young ladies into the house, and Gabriel quickly followed suit in offering his own arm to Lily. Both young ladies accepted the offers and made their way into the house for a proper call.

“I hear that your cousin has returned from his trip to Bath. I trust that this means there will soon be talk of wedding preparations,” Lily looked up from the piece of embroidery she had been working on.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about, Camilla,” Elizabeth replied. Camilla Carter had been Elizabeth’s closest friend for many years, and had quite mastered the art of teasing the young woman.
“You can’t fool me by being coy, Elizabeth. We all know that the two of you are quite taken with each other,” Camilla replied. Lily shook her head slightly and returned to her work as she listened to the conversation.
“An offer hasn’t been made. Until that happens, I know nothing about a wedding,” Elizabeth told Camilla. Lily couldn’t help but smile knowingly at Camilla. Elizabeth seemed clueless as to their cousin’s true feelings and intentions towards her.
“Just because an offer has yet to be made doesn’t mean it won’t be made. The young man is quite as taken with you as you are with him, Elizabeth,” Lily added.
“I suppose we shall just have to wait and see what becomes of all of this speculation,” Elizabeth finally conceded, mostly to stop the other two from speculating further. All three young ladies went quietly back to the pieces of embroidery they had been working on before the conversation had come up. A few moments later the butler, Jameson, walked into the room.
“Mr. Blackinton and Mr. Saporta to see you, ma’am,” he said, addressing Elizabeth. All three of the young ladies quickly put away their embroidery so that they might properly visit with the gentlemen.
The gentlemen walked into the room just as the ladies stood up. “I hope we are not disturbing you, ladies,” Ryland said, bowing. Gabriel followed suit, not saying anything. The ladies curtsied.
“Mr. Blackinton, I trust you remember my dear friend, Miss Carter,” Elizabeth said. Ryland bowed slightly in acknowledgment, prompting his cousin to continue with the introductions. “Miss Carter, may I introduce my cousin’s friend, Mr. Saporta.”
“It is a pleasure to meet you,” Camilla said, smiling slightly at the young man.
“The pleasure is mine, I assure you,” Gabriel replied. He then turned to smile slightly at Lily, who nodded and smiled back at him in acknowledgment.
“Would you care to sit down, gentlemen?” Elizabeth asked, always playing the role of hostess to perfection when their mother was not around to take charge of the situation. Ryland was quick to move so that he could sit next to Elizabeth, a movement that caused Lily and Camilla to smile knowingly at one another. Gabriel made his way to an empty chair next to the settee on which Lily and Camilla had situated themselves.
“I trust that you have all been well,” Gabriel commented, attempting to make small talk as Elizabeth and Ryland whispered quietly to one another.
“Quite well,” Lily assured him. “I am sorry, but my father was called away to business this morning, and my mother is out to call on her sister. They will hate that they missed your visit, Mr. Blackinton.” Ryland ignored Lily’s attempt to bring everyone into the conversation as he got up and walked towards the window. An odd gesture, considering that he was always such a gentleman and so polite to everyone. Lily glanced at Gabriel in an attempt to understand her cousin’s strange behavior. He could offer no explanation as to why Ryland would behave in that way.
“He has been quite preoccupied all morning. I was worried that something was wrong, but he has assured me that everything is fine,” Gabriel explained, whispering softly to Lily. After a moment, Elizabeth stood up and followed Ryland to the window, where they continued to speak in hushed tones.
“It appears as though something quite interesting is taking place over by the window,” Camilla noted, glancing towards Elizabeth and Ryland, both of whom appeared to be quite happy with the exchange taking place.
“Perhaps you shall be seeing what you expected sooner than we thought, Camilla,” Lily replied, a smile on her face. Gabriel raised an eyebrow at the exchange. “I fear that Mr. Saporta is not quite up to speed with the situation at hand. I believe that you know, of course, that Mr. Blackinton and my sister have been smitten with one another for quite some time. What you might not realize is that they are quite close to being engaged. We have all been wondering for some time when he would work up the nerve to propose marriage.
“That could quite easily explain his preoccupation all morning. And his behavior since our arrival here this morning,” Gabriel replied.
“I shall return in the morning, in hopes of speaking to your father. You will tell him I called?” Ryland asked, speaking to Elizabeth loudly enough for the rest of the party to hear.
“Of course I shall,” Elizabeth replied, smiling at him as she spoke. Ryland smiled at her, before nodding and moving towards the door to the hallway.
“We should go, my friend. Until tomorrow, ladies,” Ryland said, bowing slightly. Gabriel stood and, after bowing to the ladies himself, followed his friend to the door to leave.
Once the gentlemen were gone from the room, Camilla rushed over to the window where her friend still stood.
“What did he have to say? Come, Elizabeth, you must tell us what has happened,” Camilla said, pulling her friend towards a seat near Lily. Elizabeth was still smiling, almost as if in shock.
“He has proposed,” she said quietly, before turning to her sister. “I have said yes. I’m to be married.” Lily couldn’t help but smile as she listened to her sister’s words.
“Of course you have, Elizabeth. I am so happy for you, dear,” Lily replied. She took her sister’s hand and smiled. “You are to be Mrs. Blackinton. I am sure our father will be so pleased.”
