A/n:I was a huge fan of Heath Ledger, and I took his death very hard.I wrote this not out of disrespect, but to show a romantic side of both Jake and Heath. Please review-thanks.
He walked on his patio and rested his forearms on the wooden railing, the velvet sky a blanket .He couldn’t believe his best friend, his partner in crime, his soulmate, was gone.Jake had met Heath on the set of their ‘gay cowboy movie’ Brokeback Mountain. They hit it off right away, both of them playing jokes on one another, never mind tormenting the cast and crew. But privately,in one trailer or another, they could let their hair down,so to speak, and just talk. They had in-depth conversations about any subject;the universe, global warming, who was going to win the Superbowl. They had a closeness that nothing could penetrate.Sure Heath had his Michelle, the beautiful lady who played his bride in the movie, and his partner in real life. But their relationship was different. It went beyond friendship, beyond trust, beyond love.It was almost like their Brokeback relationship…without the sex.A hug here,a brush of a hand there,a stolen kiss,so chaste it was like kissing the girl next door. But that’s all they needed, and it was good.Comfortable too.
Jake wiped away tears from the corner of his eye with his thumb when a sudden feeling told him to stay.He looked around but all he could see were seagulls chasing after their dinner and small waves gently meeting the shore. He turned to leave again and then he heard it…
‘Jake….’
So low he could barely make out the sound-was it his name?He strained to hear it again, hoping he could catch it.
He wasn’t disappointed.
‘Jake,it’s me…’The same sound only a tiny bit louder.Ok,Jake thought,I’m insane.Grieving for him,he can’t be here…
‘Jacob,I’m here love…’
Now Jake was paying attention.Jacob was Heath’s nickname for Jake when they were alone. He looked from left to right to try to catch a glimpse of his friend, but to no avail.
‘Jacob,I’m all around you dearest.Close your eyes and listen to me…’
Jake closed his eyes and relaxed, possibly for the first time since he heard the news that his best friend had left him for good.
‘Jacob, feel the breeze against your face. This is me,caressing your cheek…’
Jake felt the slight whisper of a seabreeze glide against his stubbled cheek.’My god…’Jake thought. He heard a slight faraway chuckle, and then the wind picked up slightly.
‘Feel that wind, pushing your hair around?Love, those winds are my fingers ruffling through your hair.Lean back into it,like you used to do before…’
Jake did as he was told, leaning against the rail and enjoying the feelings he was experiencing. He knew his friend was here, and a sad thought struck his mind. All these years he had something for Heath but didn’t say anything.Heath was with Michelle, and there was Matilda-his other sweetheart-and he didn’t want to cause any problems.Somehow he thought Heath could sense all that without him speaking at all.Jake caught a whiff of something familiar...and he smiled.Jake could hear the smile in Heath’s whisper.
‘Ahhh so you know that smell?I always loved the ocean dearest, and that smell is like the cologne I had specially made to remind me of the ocean. When that scent is in the air, that means I am here….’Heath whispered to his Jacob.
Jake took a deep breath and breathed in the salty air that had just the slightest twinge of musk.He missed his friend so much.Heath sensed this.Jake felt a tickling breeze under his chin-Heath’s way of telling him to be happy.
‘Jacob, look up at the sky,the twinkling stars. Those stars looking down on you are my way of watching you from afar.Look up Jake, and see me,know I’m there...’
Jake started to weep softly. His friend-his partner in crime that he wanted to make his partner in life but was afraid to say anything-was here-somehow,someway-comforting him in his own special way.Even in death,Heath knew what Jake wanted and needed the most.
The winds blew up from the ocean, which was well into high tide. With a last rub of his palm to wipe away any excess tears,Jake went into the house and shut the patio doors. He knew that somehow Heath had followed him in.He didn’t know how but he wasn’t about to complain.
‘Ghost, mate…can do pretty much what I want,’Heath chuckled softly, causing a warm breeze to flitter the curtains.
The shock of the day’s events had finally taken its toll on Jake.Heath could see him sway on his feet, much like that beautiful scene in Brokeback. He glided over to his Jacob and whispered,’Come on cowboy, time to head to the tent.’Jake giggled at that, then agreed. He stumbled over to the bedroom, yanking clothes off as he went.Clad only in his boxers he slid under the sheets, curling onto his side and nuzzling a pillow that Heath had given him as a joke gift during Brokeback-a fluffy pillow shaped like a Stetson cowboy hat.He reached for the thick burgundy comforter but was surprised to grasp at air.’What the--’he thought, then he felt the blanket hover above him, then smooth out around him.Heath floated next to him.’I can’t do this all the time Jake, but when I’m not here,as you cuddle in for the night, just think of me drawing you into my arms and holding you tight.Because I may not be here in form, but I am here in spirit.’He bent down and kissed Jake goodnight,a warm piece of silk gliding over his lips.As he stood up,Jake noticed Heath’s eyes glistened with tears, and his started to well up also.Soft but calloused thumbs wiped them away. ‘Goodnight Jacob.I’ll try to be back soon...’Heath started to glide out to the patio doors, but Jake stopped him.’Heath!’ he cried out.He jumped out of bed and ran to the doors.’I’m so sorry I wasted this time, but I love you.Always have since Brokeback, and I always will.’The tears came back into Jake’s eyes, spilling out onto his bare chest.Somehow turning as corporeal as he could,Heath took Jake into his arms.Jake couldn’t feel Heath’s heartbeat, but could sense an ethereal warmth radiating from him. They held each other close, then did what they always wanted;they shared one last kiss, this one filled with love, longing, the what might have beens and the what could have beens. The two men ended, leaned back and looked at the other.Heath brought his fingers up to Jakes hair and ran his fingers through the brown strands.’Jacob,I’ve gotta go.I need to get back...’Heath whispered. He pulled Jake close one last time, then started to fade before Jake’s eyes.Jake didn’t try to argue;he knew Heath had to go.He treasured the short time he had with him,and it was a comforting thought that his cowboy loved him back.’Yes Jacob,I love you damn it!Now go to bed and dream of me….’Heath’s voice faded off into the moonlight.
Jake sighed and crawled back into bed.He could feel Heath’s arms around him, just like he said.He drifted off thinking about the man he loved, the man-literally-of his dreams…
“BEEP-BEEP-BEEP-BEEP!!!!!!!”
Jake’s alarm clock rudely woke him up at 7:00am.The movie he was working on called for him to be at his trailer by 9am,but the craft service there were awful,so he’d rather have breakfast at home.He got up and threw on a robe, preparing some toast,Frosted Flakes and a grapefruit for breakfast. He scanned the newspaper, catching the sports first before hitting the arts section. There was an article about the upcoming Oscars and all the hoopla surrounding them.He felt a pang in his chest when Heath was mentioned because of his best actor’s nominee for Brokeback. He teared up a bit, like he always did and then he looked up.He felt a soft breeze touch his cheek, almost like a lover’s caress. That’s when it all came rushing back to him:the breeze, the wind, the scent of the air,the blankets…in his grief he must have dreamt Heath was there.Jake decided that he really needed to follow up on that grief therapy the studio offered him.As he went to his bedroom closet to pick out his clothes for the day,he thought he would try it out, couldn’t hurt right? That was his train of thought until….
…
He opened the closet door and saw Ennis’ beige cowboy hat hanging up on his closet door, along with the picture postcard of Brokeback Mountain.
Jake was in shock. He picked up the postcard and turned it over.
‘Jacob…I’ll still be here watching over you,but my true home is in Brokeback Mountain with you. We’ll be there again someday,I promise…
‘My love,Heath’
Jake just shook as he read the words out loud, then traced the writing on the postcard. He smiled as he thought of all the fun they had while working in Calgary, and frowned at all the couldas and shouldas and wouldas. But most of all he sighed in contentment,Heath was caring about him still in his own special way.
Turning to look at the clock,Jake jumped up.‘Dammit,I gotta hustle my ass’ he thought as he grabbed any old clothes out of the closet, then went to start the shower. On the way to the bathroom,he stopped, turned, and went back to his closet. He grabbed the cowbay hat and lay it near his clothes, wanting to feel close to Heath for the day.Turning and walking toward the shower,a breeze stirred and messed up his hair.He laughed, looked out to the ocean and said.’I love you too Heath.I love you too.’
