“You’ve messed up again and you’ve only been here a few months.” The boss shouted, in rapid Japanese. Carra had a hard time understanding what the small man was saying, for her Japanese wasn’t perfect. She had been studying since high school and had managed to learn enough of the language to communicate with the Japanese at a conversational level, which was a level that most people her age had been able to achieve. From her sophomore year of high school all the way through college she had been studying the language. It had taken her all those years just to become a conversationalist in the language. Carra still had a long ways to go if she wanted to sound like a native speaker. She had recently moved into the country, tiring of the Americas and the people in it. Carra could only bow in apology, mumbling words of “I’m sorry”, and “It won’t happen again.” The man finally finished speaking and shook his head.
“Get back out there.” Carra nodded, a grateful expression on her face, she would have thought the man would fire her this time, after all of the mistakes she had made she knew he couldn’t deal with her for much longer.
Carra wasn’t even sure what she had done wrong this time It seemed like at least once a day she would mess up something. The girl’s Japanese wasn’t perfect, far from it, so there were times when she would get orders mixed up.
It had been Carra’s second day working at the café and she was extremely nervous, she had been working a few tables at once for the café was packed with customers and they were short a staff member. Akane had called in sick again saying that she had a migraine and sore throat. Everyone knew what it was from; Akane had gone to an alice nine concert once again even though she knew she had to work the next morning
Carra had known about the concert but hadn’t been able to attend. She had just gotten an apartment and job and hadn’t been able to afford the ticket price. She had told herself that there would be more concerts and opportunities to go, that it was better to wait until she had enough money saved up to go without worrying about the rent or cost of food.
Serving multiple tables at the same time was a lot of work especially on the second day. Carra had ended up confusing two of the orders, causing the customers to complain to her manager. The man had been lenient, reminding her that these things happened but to not let it get her down, to take things slow even if it was busy. Tenoji would rather have happy customers, then employees that weren’t able to handle a rush. But the girl continued to make mistakes as the time passed and with each one Tenoji seemed to get shorter and shorter with her, even though she was making mistakes they were happening less and less. It may take me a bit longer than Akane, but soon I won’t mess up at all. Carra had told herself. She had admired Akane when she first started working there, before she knew how snobby and stuck up she was.
Carra also wasn’t the most agile person in Cicada; she was frequently dropping things, or tripping over her own two feet. Luckily, she hadn’t broken anything that was too expensive, or couldn’t be replaced. The American was improving as the days went by, she was learning her way around the shop, remembering where tables and chairs were so she wouldn’t run into them and hurt herself, make herself look like an idiot.
Carra had wanted to get away from life in the United States, there were people and places there that she didn’t want to remember. She had finished college and decided to try living in Tokyo for a while. She was a big fan of the country, ever since she was a tween. First it had been the Japanese anime as a thirteen year old, and then she moved onto Japanese Rock when high school came around. As Carra got older, her tastes in the culture of Japan matured, sure she was still a fan girl at heart but, she wasn’t like those screaming fourteen year old fan’s that made her want to walk away from the fandom.
She had started planning to move to Japan her sophomore year of college. She was tired of the States and desperately wanted a change of pace. After nearly a year of planning and researching she had been able to secure a passport, visa, apartment and job. She had applied for a job online and had gotten it, but when she checked it out once in Japan it hadn’t been what she was expecting. Backing out of it she had looked for something else. Carra had noticed the many café’s in the city and how many needed employees. She had taken a chance at one of those jobs filling out at least ten applications. She had only heard from a few of them, Cicada had been the best choice in the end; perfect location and atmosphere.
Carra missed her family but was glad to be away from them. It had seemed suffocating at home always having to answer to parents whenever she did something. But now she was on her own and had only herself to look after.
If there was one person she didn’t miss it was Seth, the man who had broken her heart a month before she left for Japan. It was painful to think about, so the American did her best not to think of him. She succeeded most of the time, but there were times when she couldn't, when the pain was too much.
It was at times like that when she was grateful for her friend Miku. The bubbly girl had moved in shortly before Carra and had ben able to show her around the city. It had been a joyous occasion to find that Miku worked at Cicada as well. Carra was thankful that she had made a friend, that she wasn’t alone. They had quickly become best friends, Carra could tell Miku anything and the girl listened and cared. She was grateful to have found such a kind girl in the city for she had done some research and found that Tokyo wasn’t the nicest of cities.
“Watch it looser…” A smug yet annoyed voice called from somewhere to her left. Being shaken out of her thoughts, Carra got out of the way in time to see the haughty Akane making her way through the small doors where Carra had been standing. She had spaced out right in front of the doors. At least she was nice enough not to hit me. Carra said, surprised that pompous Akane hadn’t hit her with the door on purpose. Carra mumbled an apology as the tall Japanese girl walked by. Akane seemed to hate Carra, or at least was extremely annoyed with her all the time. And Carra still couldn’t figure out what she did to deserve Akane’s harsh treatment. Unless it was because she was from America, but no one else treated her that way. She could only hope that Akane would get over this phase, see that Carra meant her no harm.
A friendlier voice came from behind the American. “Carra, if you don’t want to get in trouble again you’d best get out there and man your tables.” The voice was energetic and belonged Miku. A warm smile now dawned on both their faces; Carra because it had been Miku that reminded her not to stall, instead of Akane who would have given her an earful. Her friend had a smile on because their shift was almost done “You’ve only got two hours left of your shift you can do it.” Carra gave a small chuckle as she made her way out into the crowded café.
It seemed unusually busy for this time of day. Most students were in school, or at least Carra thought they would be. She glanced at the large clock that was on the wall, it was only quarter after three. Most high schoolers would be going to some type of cram school, but there seemed to be a large gathering of students. They were mostly girls, still in their high school uniforms. She frowned at this as her eye’s scanned the room. She saw a couple of high school boys who were huddled together separate from the large group of girls. The whole large group of students seemed to be anxiously waiting for something or someone. What that was, Carra had no idea. She could only wonder as she delivered any needed drinks that Akane had written down.
It seemed that the chatter of girls had grown suddenly quiet. Her boss Tenoji had come out of his office in the back room confused at the sudden lack of chatter. “Carra, go see what’s wrong.” The brown haired girl sighed, wondering why she was the one that had to go out and see what was wrong. ‘Probably some stupid celebrity walked by the window.’ Carra thought to herself with a slight shake of the head. She hated fan-girls and how immature they could act, especially at twenty-one years old, namely Akane. Going out into the seating area, Carra noticed a semi circle of girls. They seemed to be all focused around one table, which was of course next to the windows in the front of the cafe. A frustrated sigh escaped her lips. This fact confirmed that not only had a celebrity walked by their café, but said person had gone in. This was the reason why so many people had come into the café; they were waiting for some big shot. No doubt the group of high schoolers in the café had stalked the poor person, listening in whenever they could. How they found out that the man was going to this café was a mystery. She would only pray that the celebrity didn’t stay long. It would make her job that much harder catering to some big shot celebrity that would most likely treat her like trash. She only hoped that whoever it was wouldn’t treat her like that just because she was a waitress.
Carra heard the voice of Akane whisper complacently in her ear. “Nao’s here and I ordered his drink.” The taller girl told her, smiling broadly at everyone. The Americans stomach did flips. Nao from the band alice nine was actually in their café, the small little cafe that only high school kids went to. Albeit they did have excellent food but that was no excuse for someone like Nao to come in, he was a busy man after all with a full schedule; certainly not time to dine in a no-name café. She would have thought Nao would only go to Starbucks or some fancy café that served expensive cakes. Certainly not one like Cicada whose doors had only been open for a few years.. Miku came up behind her, putting a hand gently on her shoulder. “Don’t worry, you get to deliver the drink.” This fact put a smile on Carra’s face. She had forgotten that on busy days waitresses paired up. One would take the orders, the other delivered, this ensured that things went quickly and smoothly, efficiently moving customers in and out of the café. Since she was paired up with Akane, Carra would get to see, and possibly speak with her favorite band member. There was a renewed spring in her step as she made her through the semi-circle.
