Part 1: Homework.
“Maybe you could just tell them you’re working on your homework…I really want you to come over.”
A boy of about eleven scuffed his sneakers over the cement and whined to his friend. His friend, who was sitting across from him on the picnic table reading a book, looked over the top of the book in question at him.
“My parents won’t keep believing that story Thomas…”
The other boy lay down on the opposite side of the table and huffed noisily. “It’s not fair. I like being around you, you’re my best friend so why can’t we be together?”
The other boy flipped some of his hair over his shoulder before putting his book down. “My dad keeps saying he doesn’t want a fag for a son…”
“What’s that?” the other sat up staring at the brown haired boy.
“I don’t know, but he keeps saying it every time I want to go over to your house.” He paused for a moment before running his fingers through the other’s short hair. “Were you in the woods or something?”
The shorthaired boy shook his head quickly.
“Thomas Bangalter…don’t lie to your elders.”
“Psh, you’re only one year older…”
“Still one year older than you.”
“Guy-Manuel de…your name is way to long you know that?”
The elder shrugged. “’snot my fault. That’s the short version to.”
Thomas nodded. “I know.”
The elder brought his knees up to his chest looking at the younger boy, biting his lip softly. “I could say that I’m staying after school to study…”
Thomas looked at him. “I don’t want you to get into trouble. Your dad is scary when he’s angry.”
Guy-Manuel looked down at the table and nodded. “I know, at least you can leave. Your parents are cool…” He chewed on his lip before looking at Thomas. “It’s not lying entirely…only half.”
Thomas looked at him a bit skeptically before sighing and leaning over to place a quick kiss on his cheek. “Then I’ll see you after school. I have to go…the bell’s going to ring any minute…” The younger boy stood grabbing his books and running off across the small yard towards the gathering mass of students heading to classes but not before turning and waving at him. Guy-Manuel kept his eyes down and felt his face heat slightly, sure they kissed each other’s cheeks but lately the elder had started to feel strange each time they did it. It scared him a little because he knew from what his parents told him that feeling that way from a boy was wrong, he was only supposed to feel that same tingly feeling for girls. He found girls somewhat repulsive and stupid, especially the ones their age. He watched them yes, it was hard not to when they paraded around in short skirts, tight shirts and whorish makeup. He couldn’t understand why girls their age were wearing makeup…then again, if he wasn’t paying attention to them he had nothing else to look at but the unpleasantness of them. He didn’t pay attention though, his observation was more or less kept on Thomas, he was cute after all, could anyone blame him?
*******
Thomas was convinced that their math teacher hated him, there was no other explanation for the horrible grade on his test. He’d stayed up all night studying for the damn thing and he’d gotten a less than desirable mark. Guy-Manuel had even helped him before the class. He sighed and let an irritated scowl replace his expression for the rest of the class period. He wondered how the elder boy could get the grades he got without really trying…maybe he was just a genius…or maybe Thomas was an idiot. He supposed anything was possible…not that it mattered. When the bell rang, he would be out the door and with Guy-Manuel, that made going to this hell hole worth it in the end. He ended up doodling in his notebook the entire lesson which was just as entertaining as watching an earthworm race. All the while his mind kept crawling back to the scene at lunch. It wasn’t the first time they’d met up like that, hell they’d been friends since they were five. Usually Guy’s class got out a little before Thomas’s, so he’d occupy a table outside in the warmer months and of course bring along a book to wait for his slow ass to get there. He had an excuse though, usually something or someone got in his way. After all, Guy was the ‘odd’ one at school and since Thomas was his best friend, he was entitled to half the beatings. Guy knew about them, he was sure, but he never said anything and always played innocent about strange bruises, cuts and scrapes. Thomas couldn’t thank him enough for it though. He was brought out of his thoughts when the harsh beep of the bell signaled the end of the day. If they wanted to get out of there before the Minguous brothers decided to injure one of them he had to hurry.
The end of the day was the fastest that Thomas Bangalter moved. Ever. He grabbed his things and nearly knocked over a few girls standing around the doorway before walking as fast as he could without running down the hall full of people. He glanced over a few people’s heads and found the clock. 16:08, Guy would be just getting outside by now, and he could see the Main entrance…it was so close. So close but so far away when he was pulled into the boy’s restroom so roughly that he fell to the floor. There was no talking involved in today’s beating apparently as they dragged him by the feet further into the bathroom before stepping on his back and kicking him in the ribs…beginning the daily ritual.
Guy-Manuel was sitting on the stoop of the school, nose buried in a book again. He glanced over the top of the pages at the clock in the yard and felt his stomach flip a little. He knew what was happening…he knew why Thomas was so late, but there was nothing he could do. The time he’d offered help, Thomas had insisted that he’d rather get beat if it meant that they left him alone. Guy had told him it was a stupid decision, but he couldn’t control him. He almost felt like crying every time he saw the younger after they were done with him. It nearly broke his heart to know that his best friend was taking some of the worst beatings in school for him. When Thomas walked through the door, his book was forgotten on the stoop. Thomas was nothing but a mess. His lip was split, he had bruises over his cheek, his ear had a slight tear in it, and he could barely walk standing straight up. The reason he almost cried was because Thomas was usually the one crying…only one had a reason.
