The other day, Darren and I did something we very rarely do: we had an argument. Maybe I was over-reacting a bit, but I’m entitled to my feelings. Here’s what happened: He spent the day at Justin’s, which I was fine with. I was home working. Dinnertime comes and goes, and Darren didn’t call to say he was on the way home, could I fix him something (which I gladly would’ve done), or not to bother, he’d just eat there. So I just ate the leftover Chinese takeout that was in the fridge. What pissed me off was that when he did get home after not having called, he was disappointed that I hadn’t fixed him something to eat. I felt taken-for-granted, and it stung. And I let him know it, in no uncertain terms. At first, he was stunned, but then he got defensive. I almost expected that he would, but I wasn’t backing down.
He fired back with, “Are you saying you don’t like being married to me?”
“That was a cheap shot. I never said that, Darren. What I said was that when you just assumed there’d be dinner waiting, I felt taken-for-granted. I felt like your dutiful little bitch housewife. Is that what you think of me?”
“I can’t believe you just said that, Richard!”
“I’m just saying that a little consideration would be nice. Now I’m going upstairs before I say something I don’t mean.”
Passive-aggressive of me, I know, but I didn’t want to make things worse by saying something in anger that I couldn’t take back. I raced upstairs, two steps at a time, and left him downstairs to think about it. I knew his pride wouldn’t let him come running after me, at least not right away. Let him scrounge for leftovers and think about how he hurt me! I took a shower, still miffed at Darren, but by the time I was done, I had a headache from the stress, and I was more sad than angry. I flung myself down on my side of the bed and cried. Feeling miserable, I just wanted him to understand how I felt, even if I had made a mountain out of a molehill. I made sure my back was to the door, and I hugged one of the extra pillows. I wondered what he was doing. Watching telly? Ringing up his sister for marital advice? I wonder if he’s going to take his own advice and talk to me before he goes to bed? I just laid there, not able to hear what, if anything, he was doing downstairs, sniffling, just wishing he would apologize and come hold me. He came upstairs eventually.
“Rich? You sleeping?”
“No.”
He walked around to my side of the bed, looking contrite, and knelt beside me.
“You’ve been crying?”
I nodded. He looked like he was about to start too. He took a deep breath and reached for my hand.
“You are the last person on this earth I would ever, ever want to hurt, and you have to believe me that I’ve never taken you for granted. I guess I was caught off-guard when you got upset that I hadn’t called. I’ve done that before and you didn’t get mad. Why now? What was different?”
“Because this time you were disappointed that I didn’t have dinner waiting.”
“And that hurt you?”
“Yes.”
“So it wasn’t that I didn’t call, it was the dinner thing?”
“Yes.”
“I’m sorry, Richard. I had no idea you’d be upset. I never meant to hurt you. Please believe me.”
“I do, but can you see it from my point-of-view?”
He looks into my eyes.
“I shouldn’t have assumed. Can you forgive me?”
“Yes, if you promise next time to consider my feelings.”
“I promise. Just so I understand...if I had called and asked for dinner, you’d have been alright with that?”
“Yes.”
“And if I hadn’t called but hadn’t asked for dinner, you’d be alright with that too?”
“Yes.”
“So the whole thing is that you were willing to make it, but I didn’t ask, right?”
“Right.”
“I guess I just assumed that you liked cooking for me.”
“I do.”
“I’m confused, Richard.”
“I’m willing IF you give me the courtesy of not taking for granted that I’m going to do it.”
“I love you, but you’re driving me crazy, Richard. How will I know if you’re willing or not?”
“ASK!”
I think the light bulb finally went on in his thick skull.
“Okay, so by not asking, you felt that I was thinking ‘My bitch at home always has dinner for me, so why should I call?’”
“Precisely!”
He smiles, and shakes his head.
“I never thought that, Richard.”
“I know, and perhaps I was being overly sensitive, but that’s what it felt like to me.”
“First of all, you’re not my ‘little bitch housewife’. You’re my partner. My smarter-than-me, stronger-than-me partner.”
“I guess I did read too much into it. I’m sorry I blew up at you.”
“I’m sorry I assumed. Are we okay then?”, he asks.
I nod.
“Can I get a kiss and a hug then?”, he asks, hopefully.
We both stand up. I’m relieved that we’ve cleared the air.
“I never meant to hurt you. I’m sorry. I’ll make it up to you. I’ve got something planned for tomorrow.”
“Darren, you don’t have to...”
“Hush! If I want to spend the day spoiling you, I’m going to. Sleep in tomorrow, and the surprise starts after I get back from walking the dog.
“Half the time, I’m still asleep when you get back anyhow.”
“Just stay in bed, please, Richard?”
“Alright, I’ll stay in bed. But right now I’ve got a wicked headache, and I need to take something for it.”
“Me too. Maybe we should go relax in the hot tub?”
I nod, rubbing my neck.
“I’ll get the towels.”
We walk downstairs, holding hands.
“Darren, can we just skip the lights and music this time?”
“Sure. Will you let me hold you?”
We sit in the dark, letting the water bubble away the tension. He pulls me close. We don’t say anything. We just close our eyes and hold onto each other. And I’m crying all over again, just relieved that we’ve made up. He holds my face in his hands, tears welling up in his own eyes. He shakes his head and wipes my tears away, and then plants kisses all over my face, trying to get me to laugh.
“You’re being silly, Darren.”
“At least I got you to smile.”
“I’m so moody lately! What is it with me, anyway?”
“Maybe you’re pregnant, Darling.”
I laugh.
“That’d be something, wouldn’t it?”
“Suppose it were possible. Would you do it?”
“What, carry your child?”
“Our child.”
“Well, yeah, I would, but giving birth does sound terribly painful, doesn’t it?”
“Hmm. Medical science isn’t quite there yet, Baby.”
He pauses.
“You don’t think I’m patronizing you when I call you “Baby”, do you?”
I smile.
“No, you can still call me ‘Baby’, as long as you don’t mean it to be patronizing.”
“Richard, if I’ve ever said anything to you that was the least bit condescending, you’ve usually sliced me to ribbons with sarcasm, all with a smile on your face.”
“Very true.”
“I could always come up with new pet names for you”, he suggests.
“Like what? Snookums? Cuddlecakes?”
He’s giggling.
“No, more like ‘Lovebug’, or ‘Poopsykissyface’.”
“Eesh! I’ll take ‘Baby’, thanksverymuch.”
“Can we go to bed now, Snookums?”, he asks, as we’re stepping out of the tub.
I grab the towel and snap it at him.
“I’ll ‘Snookums’ you, ‘Sugarlump’!”
By now, we’re laughing as we towel off and head upstairs, snapping towels at each other, and making up ridiculous pet names for one another. He pulls me close at the foot of our bed, running his finger down my chest. It feels nice, but I’m sooo tired.
“I don’t suppose you’d be up for a go, would you?”, he asks.
“How about in the morning? I’m so tired tonight.”
“That’s alright. I figured you were, but it couldn’t hurt to ask, right Darlin’?”
“Right Luv. Would you hold me close tonight? I’d really like that, Darren.”
“Absolutely. Come on, let’s get in bed.”
“Can I put on some shorts first?”
“What for?”
“Just so you’re not tempted to grope certain bits once I’m asleep”, I joke.
“As if a thin layer of cotton would stop me!”, he fires back.
I roll my eyes.
“In the morning. I’d be useless tonight, Luv. Too tired to participate.”
We snuggle up together.
“Thank you for forgiving me”, he says.
“Thank you for putting up with me”, I reply.
“Please. I’m far harder to put up with than you are.”
I pause.
“You’re right about that, Luv.”
He’s laughing.
“You didn’t have to agree with me, Richard!”
I’m laughing too.
“I love you, Richard.”
I don’t answer right away. I give him a soft kiss first. He closes his eyes.
“I love you too, Darren.”
