Fish Out of Water
A Michael Phelps Fanfiction by Breakablebeings
The shrill ringing of the phone jarred Elsha from her sleep. She squinted at her desk’s clock. It was nine am on a Saturday. With a groan, she clumsily smacked her cell phone to the floor. Whoever was calling wasn’t given up, however. They called again. She finally let out a curse and fell half out of the bed to flip it open.
“Someone better be dying,” she muttered.
“El, what are you doing still asleep? Do you know what today is?”
Elsha let the rest of her body slide to the floor.
“Yes Madelyn, I do. It is a damn Saturday at freaking nine am. What do you want?”
Elsha could hear Madelyn let out a frustrated sigh.
“El it’s the day Michael Phelps’ plane flies in. You know, the amazing swimmer with the outrageously gorgeous body who brought some fame to this backwater town of Baltimore. You’re supposed to be picking me up in like 10 minutes to follow- I mean make sure he makes it back home.”
Elsha let out another groan. Ever since he had become a star at the Athens’ Olympics, Lyn had become an obsessed fan of Michael Phelps. Her room’s wall was lined with pictures and newspaper cutouts of him and his stats. Elsha felt that he was a tad on the arrogant side; letting his fame and peculiar talent get the better of his ego and felt that it was a waste of time finding him to be so fascinating. Now Da Vinci was someone she would gladly quote.
“Are you still there El? Get you butt over here and pick me up. His plane lands at 10:30!”
“Oh, you owe me big Lyn. You know that book signing for the new book on archeological findings of the 20th century?”
It was Lyn’s turn to groan.
“Fine, but no geek debates with other weirdoes okay? See you in ten.”
After saying goodbye, Elsha flipped her phone closed and got up from the floor. Knowing that Lyn’s version of ten minutes was more like five, she quickly brushed her teeth and washed off her face. Shedding her oversized sleep shirt, she dressed in a fresh pair of pants and her bra. Rummaging through the clothing pile on the floor, she grabbed a rumpled pair of faded jeans and a black Placebo t-shirt. She ran a brush through the tangles in her shoulder length black hair and pulled it back in a tight ponytail. Satisfied with what she had done in the short time, she tiptoed down the hallway to see if her mother was still asleep. She quietly opened the door and peeked in through the darkness. Her mother was curled up, sheets covering her head and a pillow hugged tight. Smiling softly, she closed the door.
Taking the steps two at a time downstairs, she rounded the bottom to the kitchen and jumped in surprised when she saw her younger brother and sister sitting at the table with syrup smeared across their still chubby cheeked faces.
“Jon, Sari, what are you doing?”
At ten years old, Jon and Sari were splitting images of their mother. With their dark unruly hair and copper skin, the identical twins were thick as thieves and shared a bond that bordered on supernatural at times.
“Hey Ellie! We woke up and were hungry so we decided to make some toaster waffles. Where are you going?”
Elsha shook her head and held back her smile.
“You two know you’re supposed to wait for me or mom. If you clean up fast, maybe she won’t find out. I'm going to pick up Lyn and let her fulfill her stalkerish ways. I’ll be back and then maybe I’ll take you guys out for lunch or something.”
The twins broke out in identical smiles. After hugging them both, and washing off the syrup left on her face, she grabbed a bagel and hopped into her car. Rolling down her windows, she pressed play on her c.d. player and woke herself up with the sounds of Death Cab for Cutie.

“Michael! Michael, over here!”
Suppressing a sigh, Michael Phelps made his way over to a lean blond newscaster among a sea of reporters and camera men with a look that made him think of a shark closing in on its prey.
“Michael, how does it feel to singlehandedly win eight Olympic medals?”
“Well, it definitely wasn’t singlehandedly. I have an amazing team who inspires the best in me and has never let me down. If it wasn’t for them, I don’t think I’d be the swimmer I am now.”
The newscaster gave an indulgent smile as if she and he shared some sort of secret.
“Come now Michael, we know that most of the talent was all you. No need to play humble with me,” she said, pen poised over pad.
Michael held back his sigh of frustration. It bothered him that people seemed to forget that his team swam too.
“No, I'm not being humble. I worked hard to get where I am, but they did too. If you’ll excuse me, I have a plane to catch.”
Michael quickly made his way through the crowd back to his team at Beijing’s airport’s entrance. The group of them had to try to avoid interviews and photos as they made their way to security and to the divvy of planes. The cool voice of the woman on the overhead intercom spoke Chinese which was quickly followed in a translated call for the boarding of the flight to the US.
Once seated, the team goofed off, and Ryan made it his job to get glances from every female on the flight. Several flights later, the team reached the airport where they would be boarding different planes back towards their homes for a well deserved rest. After hugs, high fives, and promises to meet up soon, they split and stood in line.
On board, Michael was grateful once again that he had listened to Jason’s thoughts about booking first class to avoid fans and crowds. Michael didn’t realize how tired he was until he sat down, and almost sunk into his seat. Slipping his head phones on, he sat back and fell asleep before he knew it.

“Come on Lyn, this is so pathetic! I could be putting together my new telescope or something.”
“Stop whining. I don’t know why you feel so weird. We’re not the only ones here.”
Lyn was right. Somehow knowledge of the time when Phelps’s plane would land had leaked out among the town, and the airport’s parking lot was crammed with people with signs and banners held by fans eagerly awaiting the return of their local star.
“Yes, but all these people are stalkers. He’s nothing special.”
“Careful,” Lyn warned. “Those words are considered blasphemous here. Now help me set up my chair and sign.”
After helping Lyn (quite against her will), Elsha curled up in the back seat of her Toyota.
An hour hadn’t passed before Elsha was jumbled from her sleep by Lyn’s screaming.
“Wake up El! He’s here!”
Elsha groaned as she sat up. she felt like this entire morning had been full of her groaning, but then again, whenever she was with Lyn she felt like that was one of her dominant responses. She climbed out of the car and craned her neck over the crowd to see. Quickly realizing that she was too short, she planned to just crawl back into the backseat once more. That thought was quickly crushed, however when Madelyn grabbed her arm and pulled her up onto the chair’s shaky surface with her.
The crowd was full of murmurings until Phelps exited the airport. Then the roaring was so loud, Elsha was sure she would go deaf. The way that Lyn had angled their location was along the route Phelps would have to take to meet his family in the parking lot. Looking like a fisherman braving a storm, Phelps put his head down and tried to pass through the crowd with the help of the airport’s security. Every now and then, he would stop and sign something or hi five someone in the crowd. Finally he was passing Lyn and Elsha. Lyn grabbed Elsha’s hand and squeezed as hard as she could. Her resulting yelp must have been louder than she could control because Phelps looked over at them in surprise. Lyn immediately began whimpering while Elsha rolled her eyes. He stopped in front of them.
“And how are we ladies?” he asked with a smirk, never taking his eyes off of Elsha.
Elsha scoffed in response while Lyn began babbling on about his Olympic meets.
Michael quickly noticed that of the two girls, the smaller one obviously didn’t care about his accomplishments in the least, and judging by the way she craned her neck up to glare at him, she didn’t like him much either. For some reason, this just made his smirk grow wider. He thanked the two girls for coming out to see him and continued making his way to his sisters and mother. Glancing back one more, he saw that the glaring girl was staring at his retreat. He grinned big and waved to her which promptly caused her to frown hard at him. He chuckled softly; being back home was going to be a good time.
(A/N: This is in no way shape or form a Mary Sue or self insertion fic. This is simply a work of fiction with a character more unlike me than possible. I simply like writing and a plot popped in my head while watching Phelps win the 8th gold medal with his amazing relay time. That said, any flames are basically a waste of your time if you chose to write them. On a lighter side, this fic will use song titles in the cheesy effect of chapter titles. : ). I hope you enjoy!
