Disclaimer: This is a work of fiction. I do not know Orlando Bloom. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
I don't usually actually let any on my stuff near the net, I usually scribble down a few pages and then delete it. But I thought what the heck, it's not fair to be always reading other people's time to give a little something back, right? And it is seriously only a little something, I'm not too sure what yet.
Chapter 1
Walking in a city is something of an Art, thousands of people all going someplace, it's madness to walk around them, through them and by them, ducking and weaving, it's a great dance of people, a bizarre dance where everyone is trying to avoid the person next to them, you never know who they might be. But secretly they want to ask you to dance, everyone wants to reach out, or have someone reach out to them, human contact is the most desired thing of all.
She was used to the city now, but still couldn't find it in herself to adopt it's cold attitude, anyone who saw her moving through the city would think she had lived there all her life, not two months. But her confidence was a facade to help her survive.
Another morning, chilly, bright, everyone bustling to their destinations, paper coffee cups in one hand, briefcase in the other and the newspaper under their arm, maybe if you looked like you knew where you were going then you might discover it for yourself.
She pulled her headphones off for a second as she ordered a coffee in her usual shop, it was the only one on her route that sold Fairtrade coffee, well the only one that had the symbol, the rest claimed to have ethically sourced coffee, but until they got their Fairtrade Mark she wasn't willing to chance it, their ethical standards mightn't be quite up to scratch, it was best to go with what you knew, and the Fairtrade Mark was the only thing you could really trust.
“Vanilla Latte” a voice called from behind the counter.
“yes.” she said simultaneously with a guy behind her.
The shop assistant put two cups on the counter and disappeared.
She looked at the guy beside her as he stepped closer to pick up his coffee.
He hesitated, looking at both cups and then looked sheepishly at her.
“ their both vanilla lattes” she said to him, picking up the one closest to her.
“mine's a soy latte” he explained.
“ohh,” she grimaced and took the top off her cup.
She looked in, stepping to the side of the shop, he followed her actions and they stood looking into their cups and then into each other's cups.
“how do you tell?” she asked
“the foam all looks the same doesn't it.” he looked around the cup to see if there were any markings.
She picked up a plastic spoon dipped it into her cup and managed to scoop up some of the liquid hidden under the latte foam. She popped it into her mouth.
He laughed at the way her face screwed up.
“ack, that's yours!” she thrust the latte at him.
He handed her her latte.
“ ohh, how can you stand that stuff?” she poured a copious amount of sugar into her latte and stirred it.
“You can't miss what you don't know” he shrugged his shoulders.
“you've never had real cow milk?” she asked incredulously reapplying the lid of her cup.
“well, yeah i've had 'real cow milk' just been so long, I live without it.” he smiled, he had a really nice smile, really white teeth. It was the only thing, she could see of him, he was wearing a baseball cap, dark glasses and a neckerchief/scarf thing.
“so are you a vegan then?” she asked, they were walking out the door together.
“almost, I don't eat a lot of meat, and no dairy.” he answered.
“wow. I'm not strong enough for that. Moral or health issues? Sorry is that really personal? Ignore me.” she shook her hand, waving away her question.
“no, no. I suppose a mixture of both, but mostly dietary.”
“i tried to be a vegetarian, cos I don't like how animals are treated in the food industry, but like I said i'm weak, I just get organic as much as possible instead. But sometimes” and she whispered here” sometimes I have burger king! I'm going to hell.” she laughed.
He really liked her laugh, she had this smile that lit up her whole face, it was like a switch or something.
“so where are you walking to?” he asked.
“Just around the corner, to work, I'm a pen-toting journalist” she laughed again.
“ Actually I think I'm going to the same place, I have an interview for -------- magazine.” he commented.
“yeah that's me, hang on, should I know you so?” she asked looking hard at him now, there was something vaguely familiar but he could really be anybody. Behind the hat, scarf and sunglasses, who knew.
He lifted his glasses and she nearly dropped her latte.
“oh hang on, you're the guy, umm, what's your name? The actor.” she slapped her forehead with one hand, trying to place the face and the name.
“you're in that film, well a few of them, disneyland! Orlando bloom!” she cried. Then hushed up quickly as people gave her odd looks. She giggled.
“sorry, I don't watch much t.v.” she apologised.
“ hey, no worries. So you work for ----- magazine and yet you don't watch much t.v. I thought that would be part of the job description. It's is mainly fashion and celebs right?”
“oh yeah, but that's not what I do. I have a new column, dealing with ethical and green living for the modern metro lady. Things like organic and Fairtrade clothing/make up, all that stuff.”
“that's really cool” he said genuinely enthused.
“ I'd planned to work for something a little bit different but, then I thought, anyone who buys those green living magazines is already interested in that stuff, I figure I can pass the word on to the not so well informed.” she gestured, turning the street corner.
“i know exactly what you mean, it's really hard actually to make the right choices, especially when it's so much easier to make the wrong choice, as it is with everything these days” he chuckled and continued, “ I'm building a house at the moment, well I'm converting, I'm trying to go really green, but there are so many gimmicks and so many people claiming to be eco-friendly you have to doa lot of work to get the real stuff you know.”
“ I know exactly what you mean. Green is becoming an 'in-thing' so everyone is trying to buy into it anyway possible, and a lot of them are just spin-doctors. But if you need any help with anything, I have a huge contact base for green organizations and companies. And I have an idea of the ones who are just putting up a front.” she stopped at a door with glossy pink paint, the magazine's name splashed across it in metallic blue.
“that'd be great actually, I've got people trying to sell me stuff left right and centre cos they all want to say I'm using their product” he laughed again. She opened the door for him. He stepped into the bright room beyond with her. The secretary was at her desk, immaculately dressed and coiffured.
“Lily, good morning and...” she paused looking to the stranger behind the journalist, then he removed his glasses and she shot out of her chair and around the desk, Lily suspected he was the reason the secretary was flashing a little bit more flesh than was necessary.
“Mr. Bloom, Good Morning” she beamed at him. “Can I get you anything? Coffee? Tea? Water? Something to eat? Have you had breakfast?” she badgered him.
“I'm fine thanks” he answered politely.
“I'll show up to Karen's office, I presume it's Karen you're doing the interview with, she usually does the celebrity stuff.” Lily said to him, placing a foot in the elevator door.
“Megan, will you ring Karen and tell her Mr. Bloom is on his way up to her.” she said over his shoulder to the secretary.
He stepped into the elevator with her.
“She's going to delay all my calls now for the week, she was sure she had you in her clutches.” Lily laughed when the elevator door closed.
“should I be careful?” he asked cheerfully.
“Of Megan? Yes! Her dream in life is to marry, or at least nab someone with a big wallet and a small brain.” she laughed.
“ are you implying there is something abnormal about the size of my cranium?” he looked at her with mock hurt.
“well, technically the cranium is the part of your skull that encloses your brain, which appears fine, but it's contents....” she sighed dramatically while examining his polyester covered head.
He just started laughing, unable to respond.
The elevator door slid open, to yet another reception desk, the hall was bustling, the air was buzzing.
A woman stood in front of the elevator door, in high waisted trousers and a silk shirt, she tapped her heels on the ground, a smile passed over her face as they emerged from the elevator.
“Mr. Bloom, thank you so much for giving your time to come down here and see me.” she stressed the me a little bit, giving Lily a quizzical look.
“Lily, I think Julie is looking for you, something about your fur article clashing with the centre-spread.” she waved a hand over her shoulder.
“ okay. Well it was very nice to meet you, Mr. Bloom.” she held out a hand.
“you two, I hope we meet again, is your office here on this floor, I'd love to talk some more, I'm really interested in Eco-fashion.” he took her hand in his.
“ great, well, my office is just three doors down that way, you're free to call in whenever you want.”
“great” he echoed, and leaned forward to kiss her on the cheek.
She blushed, let go of his hand, and headed to Julie's office to see what atrocities she had committed now.
