A/N: Okay, it's been literally years since I wrote a fanfiction, but I've had this in my head for a long time. Basically, I have the whole story in my head already, I've just not had time to write it down. I've also tried to be somewhat accurate with different aspects of the story, but it is a fiction after all. So forgive me if this is bad, I'm out of practice.
“Inoue-san, could you get me a coffee? No cream, okay?”
“Oh, can I have one too? A lot of sugar with it, please.”
“I'll have one too!”
“Me too!”
Yukari sighed before plastering her widest smile on her face. “Yes, of course! Right away!”
As she headed to the kitchen, her smile quickly fell. A bachelor's in Business, a year of graduate school under her belt, and she was fetching coffee? For the millionth time, she questioned why she hadn't stayed in Los Angeles. At least she'd feel more important.
Yukari had been born and raised in America. Her mother, Reiko Inoue, had immigrated to L.A. from Japan after her modeling career had collapsed due to a tabloid scandal. There she had met Yukari's father, Derek, and they had lived happily ever after. When Yukari was a child, Reiko had made sure she became fluent in Japanese and had learned everything she could about her ancestral land.
Not suprisingly, Yukari had fallen in love with Japan before she even set foot there. She had literally screamed and cried with joy when she discovered she had been accepted with a full scholarship to Kansai Gaidai's graduate program.
The first few months in Japan had been paradise. Yukari had a blast traveling all over Japan, seeing all the sights there were to see, meeting new people, and just accepting the fact that this was reality. She really was in Japan.
Later, she'd been accepted for an internship at the Kyoto branch of Crown Records, which was the perfect first step to realizing her dream of becoming a band manager. And, as an added bonus, it was the record label of her idol, Gackt.
Now, almost a year later, Yukari dreaded coming to work. All she had been allowed to do was little, menial tasks, like making copies, serving coffee, and running errands for all of the “real” employees. She hadn't met her idol, or any other musical artist for that matter. She was no closer to becoming a manager then when she first walked through the office doors.
Yukari walked back into the office with the coffees and handed them out.
“Inoue-san, this is too hot! Didn't I tell you to put ice in it?” Kimiko, a particularly nasty woman who was never satisfied, snapped.
“I'm sorry,” Yukari muttered, bowing quickly while gritting her teeth. “I'll go get some ice.”
“Oh, don't bother. I don't want coffee anymore. You're so incompetent, you can't even get coffee right.” Kimiko leaned over and muttered loudly to another woman, “Must be the American in her. They're so lazy.”
Yukari bit back a scathing remark and glanced at the clock. Only six more hours, she thought wearily.
Yukari slumped into the hard plastic seat on the train, digging her iPod out of her purse. She put the earplugs in and closed her eyes as the soothing, seductive voice filled her head.
“Oh, Gackt, take me away,” she whispered.
Ever since she was around 14 or so, when she had discovered her mother's Malice Mizer CDs, she had fallen in love with Gackt and his music. She wasn't exactly a screaming fangirl, but she sometimes got pretty close. Though she wouldn't admit it, the fact that Crown Records was his label probably helped slightly in making her decision to intern there. Of course, it's not like she'd seen him, or any other artists for that matter.
“I'm home,” Yukari said, shouting to make herself heard over the blaring rock music.
“Hey!” Yukari's roommate, Sachiko, ran to the door. “How was your day?”
Yukari eyed Sachiko's clothes, which were covered in spatters of paint. “Obviously not as creative as yours. Did you have another sudden burst of inspiration?”
Sachiko smiled. “Sort of. It's not quite done yet.” She led Yukari over to the easel, where a half-completed painting of some complicated geometric pattern sat drying.
“Very colorful,” Yukari remarked.
“Yeah, and Miyavi is a wonderful help,” Sachiko pointed over to the stereo, which was blasting Miyavi's latest single. “Could you turn that down a tad? I've had a rough day.”
“Oh sure! Sorry.” Sachiko ran over and turned the music down. “So, are you hungry?”
“Starving,” Yukari said, setting down her purse on the counter next to Camui, her betta fish who was swimming around in a glass bowl. “And are you too?” she asked the fish, who came up to the surface of the water to beg for food. Yukari dropped a couple of fish pellets in and he ate them quickly.
“Let's see....we've got instant ramen, instant ramen, and...instant ramen,” Sachiko said, looking through the cabinets.
“Such a hard decision,” Yukari said sarcastically. “ I guess ramen, then. Man, being poor sucks.”
“You're never poor as long as you have friends!” Sachiko chirped brightly.
Yukari laughed and threw her arm around Sachiko's waist. “That's why I allow you to live here and clutter up our space with art supplies. You always make me feel better.”
“And pay half the rent,” Sachiko answered, tapping Yukari on the nose with a chopstick. Both women giggled and started to cook their ramen.
Halfway through dinner, Sachiko suddenly gasped and dropped her chopsticks. “I almost forgot!” She got up from the table and ran into her room. Coming back, she shoved an envelope into Yukari's hand. “Happy birthday!”
Yukari looked at the envelope in confusion. “But my birthday isn't until next week,” she said while making a face. It would be her 24th birthday next Friday.
“Well, it's an early present,” Sachiko said. “Come on, open it!”
Yukari opened the envelope and was immediately covered in glitter. “You got me glitter?”
Sachiko laughed. “No, there's something else in there, silly! Something you'll like a lot more than glitter.”
Intrigued, Yukari reached into the envelope and pulled something out. Inside were two tickets. But not just any tickets. Tickets to Gackt's next concert in Kyoto, which fell on her birthday.
Yukari stared at the tickets, mouth open in shock. “Wha...wha..”
“You like them?” Sachiko asked, a little anxiously. When Yukari didn't answer, she knelt in front of her friend. “Yukari? Are you okay?”
Yukari looked up at Sachiko, before opening her mouth wider and letting out a high-pitched scream of delight. She tackled Sachiko, wetting her T-shirt with tears of joy.
“Thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou!!!” She screamed.
Sachiko smiled at her friend's happiness. “I'll take that as a yes."
