A/N: So I was wandering around campus the other day and the thought occurred to me: You know what this place needs? Werewolves. And so the sequel to “Wolf and Man” was conceived.
Takes place four years after "Wolf and Man"
“Matt…” Zack slid onto his lap and nuzzled his neck affectionately. Matt wrapped his arms around him and leaned back in his chair, “What do you want?” he said tickling Zack’s side. Zack giggled and playfully bit his shoulder, “What makes you think I want something?” he whispered kissing his neck. Matt snorted, “I know your persuasion techniques.”
Zack gave him a wounded look, “Do you really think I’m so shallow?” he nuzzled Matt’s neck again and kept his head there, safely tucked between his lover’s neck and shoulder. Matt’s arms tightened, “No.” he murmured. Zack sighed and lifted his head and gently caught his lip piercing between his lips; Matt made a purring sound deep in his throat and Zack released his lip. He gave him a quick kiss and then got off his lap and went to the door.
He pulled the door open as Brian raised his hand to knock; he stepped back in surprise and then shook his head, “How do you do that?”
Zack shrugged and without looking fell back into Matt’s arms, “I hear you sometimes, usually I smell you though.” He giggled when Matt tickled his side and swatted his hand away.
“What’s up?” Matt asked as he continued to mess with Zack. Brian shrugged, “I was bored. Do you guys wanna go to the beach or something?”
Zack’s eyes brightened and without a word bounded to their bedroom to change. Matt and Brian followed him a little slower as they talked about a guitar solo for the new record.
Their conversation dropped off and Matt laughed when Zack’s furry red and white form darted out of the bedroom. “Are you serious?” Matt grabbed at his tail and Zack spun a circle and barked happily. Matt reached down and scratched behind his ears, “Fine, go get your collar.” He said and kissed his muzzle. He rolled his eyes as Zack ran happily to the kitchen to find his collar and a toy.
“I guess we should call Johnny and Jimmy too.” Matt said. Brian snorted but pulled his phone out anyway.
Zack raced Johnny for the ball; his longer legs gave him the advantage as he easily cleared the incoming wave. Johnny growled and fought against the surging water but Zack was already two lengths ahead of him and gaining of the bright green ball. He launched himself at the ball and caught it and began paddling back to shore triumphantly.
Johnny met him halfway back and tried to pry the ball out of his jaws. They reached the shore with Johnny jumping at Zack and playfully biting his thick ruff. Zack took off toward Jimmy and came to a sliding halt in front of him. He dropped the ball and Johnny swooped in and grabbed it and took off down the beach. Zack took off in hot pursuit.
Zack dragged himself through the door and collapsed, panting heavily, inside. Matt laughed quietly and picked him up easily, “What’s wrong pup, have you finally worn yourself out?” he nuzzled Zack’s neck. His coat was still dripping and Matt carried him to the kitchen where he could dry more on the tiled floor.
Brian, Jimmy, and Johnny followed Matt in. Johnny collapsed next to Zack when Matt set him on the floor and the two lay panting in peace, for about two minutes and then they were snorting and growling at each other once again.
“You two can’t go five minutes without harassing something can you.” Brian said rolling his eyes. Johnny rippled into his human form and pushed himself up; his black and white hair still glistened with water droplets. He collapsed onto Jimmy’s lap and sighed contently. Zack rolled onto his stomach and yawned, then his ears perked forward and he darted out of the room.
“What is your spastic mate up to now?” Jimmy laughed. Matt shrugged and waited patiently for Zack’s certain return. Zack waltzed back into the kitchen a few minutes later wearing a pair of low fitting blue jeans. He gracefully slid onto Matt’s lap and poked Johnny in the ribs. The little wolf growled and curled up more.
“So what did you want?” Matt asked pinning his hands to his sides so he couldn’t tease Johnny anymore. Zack turned and nipped his bottom lip, “Nothing.” He pouted. Matt rolled his eyes, “What was it?” he asked again. The other three looked at them with mild interest. Zack tossed his head to the side to clear the hair from his face; if he’d been in his wolf form he would’ve laid his ears back in annoyance, “Nothing.”
Matt gently butted his shoulder, “I know you want something.” He pressed. Zack reclined more in his arms and took on the pretense of settling into a nap. Matt sighed and shook his head, “Fine.” He murmured and kissed his cheek.
Zack really did fall asleep after a few minutes, as did Johnny. The older three talked quietly about the album and the different news they had heard from their contacts around the world at length before Jimmy decided to say his good-byes.
The sun was lowering behind the horizon before Brian left and Zack began to wake from his nap. He looked around the room sleepily and curled up again and started to fall asleep. Matt’s lips brushed over his cheek, “What do you want?” he murmured. Zack sighed and looked up at him, “It’s nothing.” He slid off his mate’s lap and stretched and walked into the living room. Matt hopped up and quickly caught him before he could stretch out on the floor, “Something’s bothering you. What is it?” he asked gently, “I don’t think you’re mad at me…but I’ve been wrong before.” He whispered. Zack caught his lips in a short kiss, “No love, I’m not angry.” He reassured quietly. Matt kissed him again, “Then what has you restless?” he coaxed. Zack nuzzled his shoulder and took a deep breath of his rich scent, “It’s…it’s nothing.” He murmured.
“Zachary tell me what’s wrong.” Matt whispered lapsing into his native accent. Zack pressed closer to him and whined quietly in his throat. He was tired of being pestered, why couldn’t Matt just drop it? “Matthew you’re beginning to irritate me.” He said levelly. Matt sighed and stepped back, “I don’t want to argue I just want to know what’s wrong.”
“And I’ve already told you it’s nothing.” Zack said a little sharper than he intended. Matt stared at him; Zack refused to be cowed and stared right back. The first to look away would lose the argument and Zack was fairly certain Matt wouldn’t pursue the matter; he’d already said he didn’t want to fight. Matt refused to look away though and Zack bristled.
“Dammit Zachary, why must you be so stubborn!” he growled. Zack bared his tiny human teeth in answer; Matt snarled at the sign of aggression and finally looked away. He angrily brushed past Zack and a moment later the back door opened then closed. Zack let his shoulders drop, he didn’t want to sleep alone tonight but his pride would never let him go after his mate. He snarled then whimpered quietly as the sun finally disappeared and darkness filled the room.
Zack fell asleep with his nose buried in Matt’s pillow. The warm sunlight falling across his back was not as comforting as it tried to be. Matt was still gone, he would probably be gone for the rest of the week. Zack whimpered and without thinking shifted to his wolf form and wiggled his head under Matt’s pillow and fell asleep again whining quietly.
Matt quietly slipped into the house around noon. Nothing stirred downstairs or up. He couldn’t smell any trace of food so he assumed Zack was sleeping somewhere or he too had left last night. He sighed and quickly checked the downstairs; he couldn’t figure out what Zack was being so secretive about. The only time he kept a secret from his mate was during Christmas or his birthday; he had assumed the same went for Zack but the current situation had him rethinking that.
He pushed the bedroom door open and saw a large lump on his side of the bed. He chewed his lip ring for a moment before walking all the way in. Zack only buried his head under things when they argued, he knew his mate had to be hurting, and Matt decided to be fair, he had over reacted the night before. Zack was entitled to his privacy, his mate’s pain was his own doing and the guilt of that left a sour taste in his mouth.
“Zachary. Angel, angel wake up.” He murmured quietly. He kneeled down by the bed and saw the pillow twitch, and then Zack raised his head enough that he could peek out at him. Matt pulled the pillow and covers off and lay down next to him wrapping his arms around his middle. Zack’s body rippled in his arms and his soft fur was replaced with warm skin.
“I’m sorry angel.” Matt whispered. Zack didn’t say anything but watched him with guarded eyes. Matt buried his head in his chest savoring his familiar scent, he shouldn’t have left last night, he should have kept his temper and stayed with his mate. He raised his head and kissed Zack’s silky shoulder, “I won’t pry anymore angel. I’m sorry I left.” He murmured. Zack shifted and his arms wrapped around him, pulling them closer together and Matt sighed in relief as his other half forgave him.
Zack didn’t know how long they slept; all he cared about was Matt’s warm body in his arms and his intoxicating scent filling his nose. He woke up a little and nuzzled Matt’s neck affectionately. There really wasn’t anything to hide from him, but the idea, once he really thought about it, was pretty stupid. Matt stirred and lifted his head and gently pressed their lips together. Zack nuzzled him again, “I’m sorry.” He whispered. Matt kissed him again, “You’re entitled to your privacy.” He said quietly. Zack sighed, “Why do we argue over stupid things?” he mumbled burying his head in Matt’s neck. Matt held him closer, “Because we’re both stubborn.” He chuckled. He felt Zack smile against his collar bone, “Am not.” He said playfully, then he sighed and raised his head again, “I…” he stopped and looked away and then back at Matt, “it was just a little thought.” He said almost to himself. Matt wanted to ask him what it was but held his tongue.
“College.” He finally sighed. Matt stared at him for a second, “What?” he had no idea what his mate was talking about. Zack kissed his cheek, “Exactly.” He said. He started to get up but Matt pulled him into a gentle hug, “What do you mean ‘college’?” he whispered.
“It’s…I…it’s nothing.” Zack said quietly. Matt let a low growl rumble through his chest, “I don’t think I’ll ever understand you angel.” He murmured. Zack laughed quietly, “I doubt it. I hardly understand myself sometimes.”
“Do we have to argue again or will you explain this ‘nothing’ to me?” Matt asked huskily, he felt Zack shiver slightly in his arms and pressed a kiss to the corner of his mouth. Zack chewed his snakebites and finally nodded, “Promise you won’t laugh.” He said quietly. Matt rolled over so Zack’s lithe body was pinned beneath his larger frame, “I swear to you I won’t laugh.” He murmured lowly. Zack turned and traced one of Matt’s tattoos with a light finger, “I…I had this thought the other day.” He broke off and Matt waited patiently for him to continue.
“I’ve never been to school before…” he stopped again and bit his lip and Matt began to see the puzzle coming together in his mind.
“My mother taught all of us to read and write from the Bible and basic arithmetic so we could help sell grain and buy seeds but I never actually went to school.” His finger stopped tracing the tattoo, “I wanted to try college, just to see…I mean, according to the little biographies we cooked up to make the band none of us have been to college. I just…I want to know what it’s like.” He finished quietly. Matt leaned down and softly kissed him, “Why would you think I’d laugh at that?” he asked quietly, their lips still touching. Zack shrugged, “It seems like a stupid idea.” He said nonchalantly. Matt sat back and shook his head, “It’s not a stupid idea. I wouldn’t be surprised if Jimmy and Johnny want to go with you.” He said.
“I’m not going.” Zack replied. Matt quirked an eyebrow, “Why not?” he lightly tickled his side and Zack swatted his hand away, “Because it’s a stupid idea.” He said again. Matt leaned over him again, “Or are you afraid?” he whispered. Zack glared at him, “I’m not afraid. Why are you so eager to see me off? Have you got a lover hiding in the shadows?” he snapped.
“You well know you’re the only one I lie with Zachary.” Matt purred unruffled by his mate’s angry response, “I enjoyed college, granted the University of Athens is nothing like it is now, it was still a great experience.” He murmured. Zack relaxed and looked up at him, “You went?” he asked, Matt heard the undertone of longing in his voice and kissed him softly, “Yes, my father was a merchant remember. He simply dropped me off in Athens during one of his trips and I studied at the University for three summers.”
Zack felt a pang of jealousy rip through him, he wanted to do that. Here he had been a wolf for more than six hundred years and he was yet to get any form of actual schooling. He looked up at Matt and bit his lip, “Would you come with me?” he asked quietly. Matt nuzzled his neck kissing him softly, “Of course angel, what would I do without you by my side?” he murmured. Zack relaxed and gave him a shy smile, “”Kay, I’ll do it.”
Matt kissed him, “Shall we tell the pack?” he started to get up but Zack pulled him down again, “In awhile.” He whispered. Matt’s body pressed against his again and Zack moaned quietly as Matt’s skilled hands teased his sensitive body.
