“What happens if I don’t want to go?” I asked for the second time, feet up on the dashboard of the blue Chevy Malibu, reading a book. Emily shot me a look from the driver’s seat.“You will be deemed the most horrible friend for not having a ‘last night in the states’ concert with me,” she said, coming to a stop at a red light. She had me. I couldn’t just leave for Germany for the summer without doing something with her. My parents, my brother, and I all go back to Germany to visit my grandparents and other relatives for the summer, even though my brother and I were both born in the U.S. I put my bookmark in the crease of the book, putting it on the floor and facing the street.
“Fine, but can we stop at a store? I wanna get a camera since it’s such a special night,” I said.
“I thought you already had one?” she asked, flicking on her turn-signal and turning left.
“No, I wanted to go back into the house and get it but someone wouldn’t let me,” I said, poking her arm. She laughed.
“I thought you were going to try and lock yourself in the bathroom or something. Here, a Whole Foods. Good enough for you?” She said, pulling up to the curb and killing the engine. I jumped out, running in and paying no attention to the bus in front of us. I walked through the doors, already knowing where the cameras were. Isle 6, with the bathroom tissues and such. I had grabbed a two pack, and was about to leave when I turned to see a tall, black haired guy. He was muttering in German and comparing two air fresheners. I couldn’t help but budge in, because he was about to choose the worst scent in the entire universe.
“That’s a bad idea,” I said, picking up a blue can and handing it to him. “This one smells much better. That one will only make it worse,” I said, but he just looked at me for a second. Maybe he doesn’t speak much english, I thought. “Dieses ein ist viel besseres. Die gerüche mögen tod,” I tried again. He smiled and took the can, spraying a little in the air and sniffing it.
“Ah! Vielen dank!” he said, putting it in his cart. I smiled and turned to leave, only to be confronted with a camera guy, two handlers, and Emily frozen in front of me.
“Oh. My God.” she said, mouth hanging open and staring just over my shoulder. “Hi, I’m Emily,” she said, sticking her hand out at the guy. I watched as he smiled and greeted her.
“Mina, this is Bill. Singer of Tokio Hotel,” she said, grabbing my hand and pulling me back into the ring of people. Bill smiled and shook my hand. Emily got his autograph and I snapped a picture with the cameras I was about to purchase. Then she forced me to stand next to him and take a picture. As she wound, he put his arm gently around my waist and my face immediately flushed a light pink. I put my arm around his back, a smile across my face and heard the camera click.
Before we left the isle he shouted, “Dank für den Lufterfrischer!” Emily looked at me as I turned and waved with a smile, and headed for the register. I scanned the package, put my money in the receptacle, and walked out the door. That was when I registered the tour bus in front of our small car.
“What was he saying?” Emily asked, shivering with excitement.
“He said thanks for the air freshener. He was about to pick one that smelled really bad. So I handed him a different one,” I said, opening my door and sliding in the seat.
“I can’t believe we just met Bill! And we’re seeing them tonight too! You’re so lucky you speak German!” She said, each sentence getting higher in pitch. We pulled into the parking lot for the theater, doing a final makeup check before heading into the arena.
“Tom is so hot!” she said as we stood in line, wiggling. I smiled and shook my head at her. Whenever either of us was overexcited by something, be it person, place, or thing, we wiggled. Emily called it ‘wagging her tail’. The security at the door checked out tickets, patted down our jackets, and let us in the venue.
“But I thought you said Bill was hot?” I asked. Needless to say, this is my first time hearing Tokio Hotel at all.
“Well, yeah they both are. They’re twins,” she said, grabbing a concert shirt from the merch table and handing her cash to the seller. I grabbed one too, handing over twenty bucks, and sliding the shirt on over the tank I was wearing. We stood up towards the front of the stage, earlier than most of the audience. Emily left to grab some water bottles, and I pulled out the camera already in use from the store. I was leaning up against the fencing when I was tapped by a security guard in a bright yellow shirt.
“Sorry I won’t lean-”
“No, this is for you and your friend. From the band,” he said, handing me two backstage passes. “He said to head over to the gate when 1000 Oceans plays and I’ll let you back,” he said, leaving just as fast as he appeared. I looked up at the stage and saw, just off to the side, Bill waving and smiling. I smiled and waved back, and turned around to see Emily heading back with our waters.
“You’ll never guess what we just got. For air fresheners!” I said, holding up her backstage pass. She screamed and jumped at it, hugging me tight.
“No freaking way! That’s so cool!” She said, hanging it from her neck and stuffing it under her shirt. I did the same, and as the crowd around grew larger, the opening bands began to play. “Finally!” Emily half-shouted as the second opening band finished their set. The singer shot a look in our direction, obviously able to hear her comment. Needless to say, they weren’t exactly pleasant for the ears. Emily was bouncing on the balls of her feet, crammed against the front of the fence. The security guard that had given us the backstage passes from Bill was standing guard in front of us, since a few people tried to crowd surf to the stage already.
“So, how’s it going Joe?” I asked, trying to make some small talk with the guy. He shrugged.
“Same as every other night,” he said, scanning the audience. I nodded, elbowing some girl behind me who, for the last five minutes, had been massaging my kidneys with her bony elbow. “Why do you girls fight to be so close?” He asked, watching one of his buddies break up a particularly rough fight further up the line. I shrugged in return.
“We’re sadistic this way. Pain to be close the the bands we’d give our spleens to meet,” I said, and he cracked a smile. Something that didn’t seem to fit the bulky, bald man.
“You do realize my name isn’t Joe?” The man said, making a quick glance to his nametag. I smiled, but couldn’t read the nametag in the low light.
“Ah, but I didn’t know that at the time, I was making a guess. But you responded so the purpose of calling you Joe worked!” I said. Not Joe smiled once again, shaking his head and turning to the stage. The lights dimmed and every girl in the venue screamed, the excitement almost tangible. A dark outline of a man sat behind the drums, as two more walked out to the guitars already set up on stage. The drummer tapped them in and the riffs cut through the air. The lights came on and Bill jumped out on stage, gripping the microphone tightly and smiling at the fans. Girls were screaming, one next to me nearly burst into tears at the sight of him. I channeled this energy into my camera, clicking pictures of him. Finally the lyrics began, and I was amazed. They were obviously in German, but so many of the audience were singing along in almost perfect German as well. I smiled and clicked a picture of Tom, knowing Emily will want as many as possible. An hour and a half into the set and they were still full of so much energy.
“Thank you for coming out tonight to see us. We are so happy to see so many fans tonight, and we’re sad to say this will be our final song for the evening,” Bill announced to the stadium. Joe lifted the radio on his belt up close to his lips and shouted a message into the small device.
“Ok girls, we’re gonna steal you back stage. Wanna crowd surf?” ‘Joe’ asked. Emily and I smiled and pushed our way back, and with the help of the few guys around us, were lifted off the ground and towards Bill. We screamed, hands in the air and Bill reached towards us, singing the first verse in amazing English.
“I carry your picture, deep in me. Back to you, over a thousand seas. Back to us,” He sang, and for a moment I was lost, before snapping a picture of him before we were handed off to Joe. He escorted us to the end of the stage and waved us on back. We climbed the stairs and stood to the side, watching the band play. Emily was singing along, bouncing in place and snapping pictures. “Please don't drift away from me. A thousand oceans wide,” Bill finished, waving to the fans and jogging off the stage straight for us. Tom and the bassist stayed to empty their water on the front rows of the pit. Bill came over and hugged each of us.
“I wanted to give you something special, for saving our lives earlier,” he smiled, hand lingering on my side a moment too long. I felt heat rushing up my neck, and stepped back when the other boys jogged off the stage.
“Who are they?” The bassist asked in a deep voice, and in German. He didn’t know I understood obviously.
“Guys, this is Marina and Emily. They’re friends from the supermarket, and fans obviously,” Bill said. “Marina, don’t mind Georg, he has no manners,” he smiled, linking arms with me and taking me further backstage. I looked back to see Emily chatting with Tom as they followed.
“You can’t seriously be giving the two of us passes just for picking out air fresheners,” I said, eyes never leaving his face. He was perfect- perfect cheeks, perfect lips. Eyes that said a thousand words and reflected his friendly and energetic mood, I noted as he looked at me.
“I am! Gustav and Georg are beasts in the bathroom, and now the whole bus no longer smells. It was most foul. And that other one would have set off an explosion I think,” he said, waving his free hand rather dramatically. "Besides, I think you're very pretty. I don't know, something in me said that I needed to see you again," I stopped in my tracks for a second, disbelief washing over me before following him again. We were in the dressing room now, and I was sat on the couch next to him. The boys were surrounding Emily, asking her questions and answering hers.
“Let’s go get a drink,” Gustav said. Tom and Georg both agreed. “Fuck! Forgot, we’re ‘underage’ here,” he corrected himself. “Fuck America and its laws,” Georg said in German, confusing Emily for a second before flashing her a smile. Tom plopped down on the couch, and the room went very quiet.
“I know where we can go, where they don’t card,” I blurted, and the energy immediately picked up.
“Where?” Tom asked eagerly, Emily excited as well. “We could take you, but my car’s rather small,” she said, an exaggeration of ‘rather’. The boys shrugged.
“We can shove Bill in the trunk. He’s small enough to fit in comfortably,” Georg joked, standing. “How about this, I’ll go with the Emily to the car, and you guys can pack up and we’ll meet at the hotel?” he offered.
“No, I’m going with Emily,” Tom said, putting an arm around her. She melted easily in his hands, and I couldn’t hide my smile from her. Georg shot him a look. “What? She’s hot, I’m claiming her tonight,” Tom said in German. I was frustrated already, hearing the way he talked.
“Fine with me, let’s go!” she said before anyone else could speak up. Tom took off his hat, dreads falling for a moment and we got to see their real length. I was astounded as they dangled down to the top of his butt. Then they were tucked up in a rasta hat, making him look like a short, pasty version of Bob Marley.
“So no one recognizes me,” I heard him explain as they walked out the door. Georg and Gustav walked out of the room as well, and Bill stood.
“What can I do to help you pack up?” I asked, following like a third wheel.
“We don’t pack up, we’ve got minions for that,” Gustav said. “You picked up a real genius Bill,” he added in German. Obviously not meant for me to understand. What the hell, let’s see what else they think, I thought, deciding to not respond back in German. Bill winced and gave me an apologetic look.
“Think Tom’s cornered the other one in a bathroom already?” Georg asked Gustav as we got on the tour bus. It smelled very floral, like a very liberal amount of air freshener had been sprayed recently. Gustav shrugged. “I think he’ll wait until a few drink loosen her up. She’ll be freakier then for him,” Gustav said back, flipping through a magazine. Also in German. Bill looked very uncomfortable, glancing at me and then at the boys. I shook my head and shifted in my seat as well. Thankfully the bus was loaded quickly and left for the hotel, no more than 20 minutes away. Which, in New York City traffic, meant it was around the corner. The downside of such a crowded yet cultured mecca.
“So are you in the States much longer?” I asked Bill. He shook his head.
“We’re heading back home tomorrow morning. I’m sad to be leaving New York though, it’s nice here. But nothing like Germany,” he said. I nodded, and the group went back to being silent as we waited for Tom and Emily to show up. Five minutes of awkward silence later the car pulled around the corner.
“That’s a five-seater,” Georg pointed out in German. Bill sighed.
“Looks like we’ll be driving illegally as well,” Bill said back to him in German. “You know, it’s not that far, hold on,” I said to the boys, and as soon as Emily opened her door I crouched down to her level. I waited for Tom to shut his door before speaking.
“Why don’t we stay here? I’ve got enough money and my mom said it would be ok for us to stay overnight if we had to. That way we won’t be breaking too many laws tonight,” I said rather quickly. She smiled at me.
“Yeah, sounds awesome. Just let me go park and I’ll meet you in the lobby?” She said, and I got out of the way so she could shut her door.
“We’ll walk from here, it’s just around the corner anyways, but I need to use the restroom inside so I’ll be back in a minute,” I said. Bill smiled, as did Georg, but Gustav and Tom seemed upset to be delayed again. I ran through the small door into the hotel, and after making sure the boys didn’t see me, I went to the lobby counter.
“Hi, I’d like one room with two beds,” I said, credit card and ID out. The receptionist smiled and tapped quickly at her computer.
“Name?” She asked.
“Marina Fischer,” I said.
“Would you like the concierge level today Miss Fischer?” She asked again, not once looking at me. I accepted, and handed her the card. She checked my ID, and handed me two keys.
“Thank you and enjoy your stay,” she said, and retreated into the back office. I smiled and put the keys in my wallet and walked back outside.
“Alright lets go,” I said, Emily already surrounded by Tom and Gustav. Figures she attracted the two more masculine boys of the group. Bill jumped and clapped his hands, his hair floating and falling perfectly as well. I shook my head as we walked up the street.
