Ch. 1
Kelly Clarkson groaned as she shifted onto her side. She sincerely regretted the night before and how much alcohol she had to have consumed to feel so bad. Kelly pulled the covers up over her head and tried to go back to sleep now that she had blocked the sunlight that had blinded her after she had first opened her eyes. Her head hurt in a way she hadn’t felt since college; when she used to go to parties on a weekly basis with her friends. She swallowed a few times and tried to ignore the cottony feeling of her mouth, though she was comforted by the thought that the rest of the band had to feel just as bad as her. Kelly chuckled for a moment at the thought.
Her stomach didn’t like the action though, and Kelly shoved the covers away as she took a few breaths to settle it. She cautiously sat up, and then she closed her eyes as she concentrated on not getting sick in her bed. The last thing she wanted was to throw up and then have to clean. Once she felt the urge pass, Kelly opened her eyes and ran a hand through her shoulder length brown hair. The first thing she had to do was find some aspirin and get a shower. Her mental to do list was forgotten when she looked around the room. She was not in her bedroom. The room was familiar though, enough that Kelly jumped out of bed as if the bed had suddenly burned her.
”Crap.” Kelly bit her lip as she looked at a few pictures to confirm her thoughts. “Crap, crap, crap. This cannot be happening.” Kelly sighed and tried not to panic that she was in one of her bandmate’s apartment, in the drummer’s bedroom. A sudden thought crossed her mind, and reluctantly Kelly looked down at herself to check to see if she had clothes on. “Not good. So not good.” She quickly grabbed the cover off the bed and wrapped it around herself before she ran for the bathroom.

Carrie poured herself a glass of orange juice and left it on the counter before she returned the container of juice to the refrigerator. She knew her hangover would be over with quicker if she ate. The thought of cooking, all the movement and smells that activity would require, made her glad that she always kept her fridge stocked with orange juice. The drink would be a good start to getting some fluids back into her system until she felt like cooking. Carrie picked her juice up from the counter, and then walked over to her small table in the corner of her kitchen/dining room area.
Calling the tiny space a dining room was a joke. The reality was that she barely had room for the table in her kitchen. If she ever lived with anyone in the apartment, and needed a table bigger than for two, she would be out of luck and most likely eating every meal in her living room. Carrie took a seat and sipped her juice as she looked over her books. She nodded and leaned back in her seat when she saw that she had set the books she would need for her schoolwork out the night before. She didn’t think she could get her head, or eyes, focused long enough to search through her school materials for the right books this morning, not after the night before.
The previous night, she’d had to play with the band at a bar. So, she had been a good student and set her work for the weekend out ahead of time. Carrie was glad she’d had the foresight to do so, although that was mostly from previous experiences. Last night hadn’t been the first time that the band had drank after a show, and after joining the band eight months ago, Carrie would be somewhat disappointed with herself if she had forgotten something so simple. She enjoyed being in the band, but some times her enthusiasm for practice or a show made her forget about her schooling. She liked her business studies, but she liked spending time with the band since it was a release of sorts. There was also the added bonus that they had a really hot singer in the band.
Carrie smiled and finished off her orange juice as she thought about Kelly. At first glance, she had found the singer adorable. Kelly had an infectious smile, a positive attitude, and a real laugh; all of which Carrie had been glad to find reflected the brunette’s personality. Most of the girls in her classes, the few that there were anyway, giggled or were so serious that they never laughed. She had known there was something about Kelly the moment she had met the other girl, and everyday she had to smile when she thought about how lucky she had been to join the band.
She had been walking through the quad, late to a statistics class, when she had noticed a few people around one of the notice boards. A short laugh from a cute brunette had captured her attention, Kelly, even though she hadn’t known the shorter girl’s name. Carrie had gone over to see what was going on. The group, two guys and two girls, all around college age, had been hanging around and joking, reminiscing about their own college experiences. She had listened quietly, amused by such different experiences than her own, until the short brunette had noticed her and explained that they weren’t weirdos, just posting flyers for their band. The rest of her joining the band had pretty much fallen together after the encounter by the notice boards. Carrie stood and picked up her glass. The band had readily accepted her, but Kelly had been the first to talk to her outside of band business, and at the time, it had encouraged Carrie. The cute singer and she had quickly become friends, though she hadn’t hidden her attraction to Kelly.
She loved to tease Kelly about being short, since it was one of the few ways she could flirt with the older girl in front of everyone. Kelly teased her back; there wasn’t a time that went by when she teased Kelly about being short, that Kelly didn’t point out that she was only five-three, not more than a couple inches taller than Kelly. For the most part though, their flirting consisted of lingering glances and amused smiles when the other was caught looking. Their flirting never led to anything serious; however, she was positive that Kelly liked her too. She had subtly asked Kelly out once, and the other girl had said yes before backtracking and turning her down in the kindest way possible, a way that only Kelly could pull off without seeming like a jerk. On more than one occasion when the band had drank together, they had openly flirted, dropped all pretense because of their feelings and the drinks. Carrie thought the problem was the band.
Carrie went back to the fridge and poured some more orange juice. The band had originally had five members, and after a break up between the one couple in the group, they had been short a member, and that was why she had gotten the chance to join. Needless to say, Kelly and the other members didn’t want another inter-band romance, and to a certain degree she thought it was a smart move. She couldn’t think of any bands that had survived after a break up, other than No Doubt, and even that was questionable at best. Despite her love for the band, and her dedication to graduating on time, nights when the band hung out just to hang out meant she had less than school-oriented thoughts when she prepared for a show; because it meant that she and Kelly didn’t have to cover up their feelings, after a few drinks anyway.
Carrie’s thoughts were interrupted by the ringing of the telephone, so she set the glass of orange juice down and answered before she decided to unplug the device altogether. She wasn’t surprised when she heard Robbie’s voice greet her. He was usually the first to call everyone about band business. “Yeah, last night was something.” Carrie let out a brief chuckle at her bandmate’s agreement. “Where’d you get off to anyway? One minute I was finishing my drink, and the next you were gone.” Carrie laughed when Robbie mumbled that he left with someone, but before she could comment, he told her that practice for the afternoon was cancelled.
“Uh, all right. We’re still going to have practice Tuesday though, right?” Carrie was surprised that practice was cancelled, but it did give her extra time to get over her hangover without the annoyance of loud music to irritate her head. It wasn’t normal for a practice to get cut. There had been times when a member had been held up by traffic, sickness, every now and then they were short a member when someone had to leave town, but in none of those instances had practice been cancelled. Whatever was going on had to be important. She didn’t ask why they weren’t going to practice, she didn’t think either of them was up for a conversation after the drinking contest the band had indulged in the night before. She, Robbie and Kelly had been the last ones “standing”, and still drinking, long after Mike and Emily had declared the contest over.
Carrie smiled when Robbie said that the Tuesday practice was still on, although she had to laugh when she heard the sound of someone getting sick in the background and Robbie hastily calling out a goodbye before hanging up the phone. Carrie picked up the glass of juice and left the kitchen. She momentarily stopped walking when she saw her books, she even briefly considered getting an early start on one of her assignments, but she knew that she wouldn’t accomplish anything in her current state. There were things she had to take care of before she could think about her business classes and what all she had to finish before the start of the week.

Kelly rinsed her mouth out a few times, even though she had already used nearly a full cup of mouthwash. She wanted to put off the discussion she knew was sure to come. She stared at the walls of the bathroom so that she didn’t have to look out the open doorway. Her stomach had given in, and she had barely made it to the bathroom before she had thrown up. As she had gotten sick, Kelly had silently cursed the fact that she hadn’t backed out of the drinking contest.
It had seemed like a good idea at the time. Robbie didn’t normally suggest competitions of any kind, so everyone had whole-heartedly agreed to the idea since Robbie would be joining them. Of course, she wouldn’t tell anyone that she had mostly agreed so she would have an excuse if anyone questioned her about flirting with Carrie. If Kelly hadn’t been busy heaving up her dinner from the night before, she would have given herself a stern look for the dumb decision. It was during her self-recrimination that she had heard footsteps on the wooden floors.
Kelly bravely peeked out into the hallway once she had convinced herself that she couldn’t stay in the bathroom all day. The hallway looked empty, but Kelly wasn’t about to stick around to get caught in the cover that she was using to hide her nudity. She dashed quickly back to the bedroom and looked for her clothes. “Just had to have a reason to flirt with her didn’t I? I couldn’t be like any other sane twenty-three year old, no, I had to take the coward’s-“
Kelly didn’t finish her thought, her current actions certainly showed that last night wasn’t the only time she had taken the easy way out. She didn’t contemplate any further though because she saw some of her clothes on the floor. Kelly hurried over to the pile of clothes and started to search through it for her undergarments. She almost smiled when she found her underwear, but she waited to put them on when she saw that some of her belongings had fallen out of her pockets. “Why do I have so much crap?” Kelly rushed to stuff the items in her pockets.
She dropped some change in her haste, but she didn’t bother to pick it up. “Twenty-five cents or having my underwear on… yeah not a hard choice.” Kelly muttered as she held her jeans and underwear in one hand as she dropped the cover she had been holding over herself with the other. An amused laugh made Kelly jerk her head up as she stepped into her underwear.
”I liked the other choice better.” Carrie shyly smiled, but she was thrilled that she could share her thoughts now. She knew they had to talk, and she thought the talk would go well; it was just nice to be able to compliment Kelly openly. Carrie continued to smile as Kelly slowly straightened up and stared at her. “I wasn’t up to cooking yet. I did bring you some orange juice though.”
Kelly couldn’t decide if she wanted to run for cover or pretend like she wasn’t freaking out. As she stared at the glass of orange juice Carrie held out to her, Kelly chose the later option. “Thanks.” She smiled, and when Carrie’s smile brightened, she leaned back down and grabbed the last of her clothes from the floor. Kelly didn’t know what to say, it wasn’t everyday that she slept with the other members of her band. “You, uh, you have me at a disadvantage of sorts.”
Carrie set the glass down on her table since Kelly wasn’t moving to take it from her. “What do you mean?” When Kelly shuffled the clutched clothes around, Carrie smiled as she forgot about her confusion and appreciatively looked at Kelly’s form. She had taken an art history class for an elective her sophomore year, and probably the only thing she had learned was that she liked the Rubenesque pieces because of the full figured subjects. Kelly surpassed any past model though in her opinion; the older girl’s hips were just curved enough to hold onto, a small waist and chest to brush her hand against or hold completely, as she had found out the night before.
Kelly blushed when she realized Carrie was staring at her. She tried to quickly, but casually, slip her bra on, not answering the blonde’s question until she had the piece of clothing on properly. “I’m all half naked, and you’re fully clothed.” Kelly smiled when Carrie looked up at her face, though her bandmate’s confused expression was back. “You have clothes on.” Kelly went back to dressing when Carrie’s blush intensified. She was getting comfortable, whether it was because she had more clothing on or what, Kelly wouldn’t question. She glanced at Carrie and wasn’t that shocked to see Carrie was looking at her again. “Guess it doesn’t matter now though.”
Carrie looked up at Kelly’s face again. She wished that she wasn’t being so obvious, it was just that the night before they had been drunk, and they hadn’t thought to turn on many lights, so she was getting to really see Kelly for the first time. “Well, you’re already mostly dressed, so it’s kinda too late for me to strip down.” Carrie had dressed for Kelly’s sake. She had thought Kelly would be confused and freaked out by the events the night before. “I could if you wanted.”
Kelly froze when Carrie grinned at her. She was not used to Carrie so brazenly flirting with her, and if she wasn’t currently questioning her judgment, she would probably have enjoyed the exchange. Instead, Kelly zipped and buttoned her jeans before she smoothed out nonexistent wrinkles on her shirt. “N-no. I think we covered that last night.” She managed a short laugh as she walked over to the bed and sat down. She didn’t know what to do, let alone what to say.
Carrie had snapped out of her lustful thoughts when Kelly stuttered; and the laugh, the nervous laugh that she had rarely heard, effectively brought her back to the reality of the situation. “You think-“ She looked at Kelly wonderingly, but only got a distantly blank expression for her concern. Kelly was freaking out. “No. No. Nothing happened. The only thing I learned last night was that all those claims about you walking around your place naked most times were true.”
”What?” Kelly hopefully looked up at Carrie. If she had gotten drunk and taken off her clothes, that was one thing. It was something that they could laugh about; something that didn’t complicate things with the band. “We didn’t?” Kelly glanced back and forth a few times between Carrie and the bed to make the end of her sentence known.
Carrie shook her head and leaned against the doorway. “We didn’t sleep together.” Carrie was torn between feeling hurt that Kelly apparently didn’t remember the events of the night before, and wanting to reassure the other girl so that Kelly didn’t look so bewildered and lost. “Your drunk self couldn’t remember your address, and you know I had no chance of remembering it, though we tried for like five minutes. I managed to remember mine, so you came home with me.” Carrie laughed because that was true. “Do you remember anything after that?”
Kelly tried hard to recall; but she didn’t even remember riding to Carrie’s apartment. She randomly wished that she had taken a minute to calm down when she had first freaked out; she could have avoided looking like an idiot in front of Carrie. “No, I don’t. The last thing I can think about clearly is Robbie wandering off with some girl?” Kelly smiled when Carrie nodded and joined her on the bed. “I guess I should apologize for that crack about you being dressed.”
Carrie felt better that Kelly’s naturally sweet thoughtful side was making an appearance. Kelly didn’t remember what had happened, which disappointed Carrie, but not enough that she wanted to tell Kelly. Her friend couldn’t, or didn’t want to, remember what had happened once they got back to the apartment. “There’s no need to apologize, like I said, I got to see that you weren’t lying all those times the rest of the band joked on you for your naked tendencies.”
Kelly blushed at the reminder. She wordlessly accepted the glass of orange juice when Carrie held it out to her again. It was kind of nice to have Carrie tease and boldly flirt with her, especially since she had pretty much made an ass of herself. Now that she wasn’t panicking, she could actually enjoy what her drunken antics had apparently brought about for them. “I should have known.” Kelly sipped her juice and tried not to smile when Carrie gave her a confused look. “You would have totally made me breakfast if we had slept together.” Kelly smiled when Carrie laughed and swatted at her arm. “Hey, no touching until I get some breakfast.”
”You wish.” Carrie stood up with a grin. “I wasn’t the one that stripped down last night, that was all you, Kel.” She laughed at the slightly incredulous look on Kelly’s face. She would have loved to have seen the same expression for a different reason, but she had already said enough so that she wouldn’t be able to; nope, she had successfully calmed Kelly and shot down the idea that they had slept together. “Come on, let’s get some breakfast. The only cute butts allowed in bed are the one’s giving me the kind of attention you wanted to give me last night.” Carrie walked away when Kelly called out her name. “I can’t help it that I like it, besides you’re the one that got all clothing optional, not me.” Carrie laughed and ran before Kelly could retaliate.

Kelly closed the door to her place and locked it before leaning against the surface. She was tired. Her hangover hadn’t lasted very long after she and Carrie had eaten some breakfast, but the events from the previous night and her morning were catching up to her. She was happy that Carrie’s emboldened flirting had continued despite her own less than desirable actions after first waking. Kelly smiled at how there hadn’t been too many awkward moments for the most part, just sweet looks and some nice compliments throughout their conversation like any other time.
She knew that she probably should have spoken more to Carrie about the previous night, but Carrie hadn’t asked her anything about them really. Maybe it wasn’t the bravest move on her part, although she had been satisfied that the brief talk had sufficiently smoothed out any possible questions the blonde had. Carrie would have said differently if she hadn’t said the right things. Kelly straightened up and walked over to her phone. She automatically keyed in the code to retrieve her messages as she thought about the hour or so that she had spent with Carrie.
Carrie had somehow become even sexier to her, though Kelly shouldn’t have been surprised. She had been the one to get naked in front of Carrie, so why wouldn’t the younger girl be more confident about the feelings between them. For a split second while they had eaten, Kelly had regretted that they hadn’t slept together the night before. She couldn’t really regret it because of the band, but seeing Carrie act self-assured and taking opportunities to compliment her, that was something that she wished could occur more often. Kelly shook her head at the thoughts.
She began to empty out her pockets as Robbie’s voice filled the room. She went back to ignoring the messages since she already knew that practice had been cancelled. The first message had been from her sister. Kelly was in no hurry to call back. She definitely needed a little alone time with her thoughts before she played their weekly session of twenty questions, or as Alyssa called it: “filling each other in on our lives”. Kelly rolled her eyes as she pulled a pic out of her pocket and set it on the table. “Gotta stop picking stuff up when I’m drunk.”
Kelly guessed that she should be happy that at least there were a few things to distract her from her thoughts about Carrie while she drank. She chuckled and reached into the pocket again, although her smile faltered when she got a good look at the necklace in her hand. It was Carrie’s necklace. She had spent plenty of time admiring the piece of jewelry, and Carrie, so she knew she wasn’t mistaken. Kelly set the necklace down on the table and smoothed out the chain before she murmured her thoughts. “Must have picked it up while I was running around like a spaz.”
Carrie didn’t take the necklace off except for at night. They had all teased the cute girl about always wearing the piece. She had jokingly called Carrie obsessive and paranoid over losing the item on a few occasions, times when she hadn’t been able to stop thinking about how good Carrie looked. Kelly turned off the machine without bothering to finish listening to the rest of the messages. Carrie would be busy with schoolwork by now, so Kelly walked away from the phone before she decided that the blonde would be happy to hear from her. Carrie probably hadn’t realized it was missing yet, anyway. She could give the necklace back at their next practice.
“At least she’ll be happy she didn’t lose it at the bar.” Kelly chuckled at the thought and headed for the bathroom to get a shower. The part of her that had feelings for Carrie wanted to get in her car and go back over to return the necklace. Of course that was the part of her that had thought it was a good idea to strip in front of Carrie… she wasn’t going to follow that inclination. Kelly knew it would be a bad idea to go back. The limits of their relationship had been expanded, if only between the two of them, and she was sure Carrie wouldn’t object to more flirting; but she needed some time to come to terms with the shift in their relationship.
Kelly grinned when she thought about maybe getting to touch her toned friend’s form without worrying about the consequences. “Shower, concentrate on the shower, Clarkson.” She resolutely turned the water on and started to disrobe. Kelly attempted to neatly fold her clothes; but her thoughts and her natural tendency to really not care if things were perfect, made the task drag on. She ended up tossing her clothes on the counter, and then she hopped into the shower. Kelly had always been able to reign in her feelings for Carrie by remembering that she didn’t want to lose their friendship. However, those feelings, and the possibilities that were now an option because of the past twenty-four hours, made it impossible to stop thinking about the other girl.
Carrie was smart in ways that she wasn’t. She had barely finished college because she had always been more into music, so school hadn’t been a priority to her. Music was probably the best thing in her life, instead of using her communications degree to find some media related job, she worked at a record store just to be around music when she was away from the band. Carrie took all sorts of mathematical classes and did well in them, and while she certainly wouldn’t ever take the courses herself, she found that side of Carrie attractive. It wasn’t just her friend’s intelligence that she liked, she obviously loved that Carrie was into music, they even liked most of the same bands. Kelly looked forward to practices because it gave her an excuse to go over to Carrie’s apartment early, so that they could hang out and talk.
They didn’t always agree on subjects, but that was what made their conversations fun, getting each other to see both sides. Plus, Carrie could also listen to her complain about her sister, or about some random customer that tried to ask for a record that didn’t exist, agreeing at all the right moments, but also make her laugh after she was finished bitching. Usually, just thinking of any conversation they had shared, or thoughts of the band, would let Kelly forget about her feelings for Carrie. Although, there were times when the other things she liked about Carrie made it hard, kind of like her current thoughts. Kelly grabbed the soap when she realized that she had been standing stock still in the shower for five minutes, despite all of her intentions, thinking about what could have happened between them if maybe they hadn’t drank so much.
Kelly had a problem sometimes during practices. There were moments when she would seriously wonder what it could possibly hurt if she and Carrie dated; those moments were typically when she watched Carrie play the drums as she tried not to go over and kiss the other girl. Carrie had great legs and arms thanks to all the drum work, and Kelly would bet that the lithe blonde had a trim stomach too. “Not that I’m going to find out any time soon.” Kelly knew why it was a bad idea to date Carrie. Greg and Emily had been dating for years when they had all started the band, but one night Emily had found Greg with a groupie, and after a long shouting match, Greg had yelled that he was leaving the band and Emily. Kelly did not want the same thing happening again, not because she thought she and Carrie would break up, it was more that it had taken Emily awhile to even feel like playing. And even once Emily was up for practices and shows, they were short a drummer. They had been lucky to find Carrie after a few months of ads and flyers, but the band had been under major stress for almost a half a year because of the break up. They couldn’t go through the same thing again if she and Carrie ever got together and then stopped dating.
