Note: In Nobuta wo produce Shuji’s mother is not on the plane that crashed, but this was based on a dream I’d had, and his mother had been on the plane. Also in the dream it had taken place a year earlier so that the present time from the dorama is when he finds out his family is going to get much larger.
Part 1: Shuji’s Life was hell.
Kiritani Shuji’s life was hell.
That was the only way to describe it. Several months ago his father had told him he’d been dating a woman for a month or so. A woman he’d met through work. Two weeks ago it was the news that he was going to marry this woman. Of course, it wasn’t like his father was marrying a total stranger. That would be too cold. She and her children had been invited over many times for dinner, and they’d gone there. He’d tried to avoid going, but was ordered to by his father. He’d been polite, used his best smile and was charming and entertaining. Like he was at school. He’d overheard her saying to his father what a well brought up and inspiring son Shuji was, and how she hoped it would be a good influence on her youngest two. His father was very pleased, and had been puffed up with pride since.
Shuji wasn’t so pleased, though. The woman wasn’t even Japanese. She’d been married to a man who had been promoted to a job in Japan. Her children were not Japanese either. The oldest was his age, 17. The others were 14, a girl, and 12, a boy, respectively. The oldest was a girl, and for some reason he didn’t get along with her. She didn’t warm up to his charm. His smiles and winning ways often made her roll her eyes and tsk, or smirk at him. Add to it the fact that she preferred her name to be the Japanese form, which meant it was Suujii, and how everyone thought it was so adorable how their names closely rhymed, and he knew it was going to be torture from here on out.
The apartment wasn’t large enough now for two adults and five children, and her small house was not large enough now either. A house was rented, and after a quick wedding ceremony they went to their new home. The one good thing about the house? The bedrooms were larger, even if he did have to still share with Koji and now with his new little brother. The girls had another room, and the adults the third. There were boxes everywhere, and it was difficult enough getting around and settled in without extra people around and school the next day.
They were all exhausted by bedtime, the youngest two boys nodding off in the bath, and then the chaos started up all over again next morning as seven people rushed to prepare for school and work. Finally everyone managed to leave the house, saying goodbye outside.
“Shuji,” his father called to him. “It’s your sister’s first day at your school. Show her the way and watch over her at school.”
Shuji tsk-ed, annoyed, and opened his mouth to remind his father that he took his bike to school when his new sister spoke up. “It’s okay. I know the way.”
Shuji saw the warning glare his father shot him, and he rolled his eyes and walked beside his bike. He always got to school early enough to shmooze with the different cliques for a few minutes. Once their parents were out of sight she spoke. “Go ahead. I don’t need to hear you make annoyed sounds all the way to school.”
He glowered at her as he got on the bike. “Just get on.”
But she stopped at the bus stop. “I have a bus pass.”
“Fine.”
She heard him leave, and she shut her eyes for a moment, relieved. The bus arrived only two minutes later, and not long later she got off a block from the school, walking behind others with the same school uniform she was now wearing. She reported to the office first, and after some discussion and explanation of things at the school she followed the teacher to the classroom. Even as she entered she saw that her new brother was in her class. Which meant she’d have to watch him do his little charming act more than she cared to.
“Everyone, this is our new student. Please introduce yourself.”
She faced the class, taking a deep breath, and scanned them with a quick gaze. “My name is Kiritani Suujii.” Ugh, she could hear the comments now! Damn her mother for wanting the girls to take on their new stepfather’s last name.
Everyone started to mutter, and she took that moment to bow. “Okay, take a seat over there,” and he pointed to an empty seat. She went to the desk and sat as some stood up and were demanding of Shuji if she was a relation.
She decided to answer. “I’m his sister.” Which caused a raucous with the louder males that sat near her new sibling so he couldn’t glower at her like he would have liked.
“Step-sister! Step-sister!” he shouted to be heard. “My father and her mother married just a few days ago.”
A guy next to her laughed. “Ahhhh-haaaa! Shuji and Suujii!” He dropped his head back and laughed with glee before meeting her curious gaze with a glow in his dark eyes and a smile.
“Alright! Let’s get to work,” the teacher shouted.
………………………….
“I’d appreciate it if you wouldn’t tell everyone you’re my sister.”
She wasn’t looking up. She’d opened her bento box, and was now slipping her chopsticks out of their container. “But I am.”
He tsk-ed and crouched, shooting her a glower. “Step-sister. Look, we don’t get along. That’s fine. Just stay out of my way.”
She finally glanced up at him, smiling. “Don’t worry, Shuji-kun. I won’t demolish the little fantasy you’ve got going on here.”
Rising he grimaced and was in mid-turn to leave when a familiar face neared. “Shuji-kun!” The drawn out name could only mean one person, and Shuji just barely avoided the arm that was going around his shoulders.
Suujii watched with interest. It was the teen that had laughed in class, the one who sat beside her. She could tell he was someone who annoyed her new brother greatly, and it amused her. “Who’s your friend, brother?”
Shuji glowered at her over her use of calling him brother. “Look, I thought…”
“Shuji and Suujii,” the other teen laughed. He flopped down into a crouch before her, and smiled. “Kusano Akira,” he introduced himself.
She was absolutely fascinated by the glow in those dark eyes of his. “Nice to meet you, Kusano-san.”
He laughed, head falling back and eyes shutting, and then looked at her. “Suujii-chan.”
She smiled. “Akira-kun?”
He jumped up with a flush at her using his given name, but didn’t tell her not to use it. “Ah!” He pointed to Shuji. “Mariko-chan was looking for you.” He laughed as Shuji remembered, and then hurried off. Akira laughed as he followed the other teen.
Suujii watched them go. Her gaze fell to her lunch, and she sighed loudly. The classroom had been too loud, and she hadn’t wanted to watch her ‘brother’ do his thing so she’d come to the roof to eat. But Shuji had followed her. As she ate she contemplated Kusano Akira. Obviously, from what she’d seen so far of him in class and around her brother, he was a thorn in Shuji’s side, and yet was very quiet in class. Quite the contradiction. Cute though. Very cute.
……………………
“So how was your first day at your new school?”
Suujii waited for her younger brother and sister to expound on their days, her gaze lifting briefly to fall on Shuji’s. She arched a brow, and then turned back to supper. They were sitting at the table, their seats assigned by their father who wanted them to mingle more and get along like a family. She sat on one side, beside her new younger brother, and nearest her new father. Across from her Shuji sat with his new youngest sister and younger brother.
“Suujii?”
She peered up at her father, and smiled. “It wasn’t bad. I was a little nervous because it was my first day, but it went well.”
“Did you make any new friends?” he asked her eagerly.
She tilted her head slightly, and considered it. “I met a few people, but I’m not sure yet if they’ll become friends or not.”
He nodded, and then lifted a fist and winked. “Give it your best! I’m sure Shuji can introduce you to his friends.”
She had been smiling, but her smile faltered there. Rising she gathered the empty dishes. “I’ll clean up since you cooked,” she told him.
“Thank you,” he beamed. “Don’t forget about your homework!”
“I won’t.”
……………………
She got off the bus, and watched Shuji bike by without acknowledging her. They were going to have to come to some kind of understanding at home. Not that they argued a lot, but she had a feeling they would start to if they kept this up. As it was she’d never known a boy to take so damn long in the bathroom as he did! Which meant she had to either wake up much earlier or rush to get ready. If she did manage to get into the bathroom before him then he’d be waiting and glowering at her impatiently when she came out.
“Suujii-chan!”
She stopped walking and looked over her shoulder as the familiar laughing voice called to her. Akira slowed his bike, and came to a halt beside her. She smiled. “Good morning, Akira-kun.”
“Climb on,” he said. “I’ll take you to school.”
She eyed the book rest on the back of the bike, and then met his gaze. Those dark eyes were glowing, and it made her heart skip a beat so she sat sideways on the book rest and clung to his jacket with both hands as he started to pedal again. “Thank you.”
“Why don’t you ride with Shuji?” he asked.
“He likes to rush.” She hesitated, and then sighed. “And we don’t get along very well.”
“Whaaaaaat?” he laughed, turning into the school grounds. “But you’re family.”
“Don’t you have someone in your family you don’t get along well with?” she asked as he headed for the bike area.
“Touché,” he gave in. He stopped, and held the bike still while she climbed off. “But you have to live with him, though.”
She shrugged, and after he’d locked up his bike and turned she bowed. “Thank you.”
He waved a hand as if to say it was no big deal. They walked to class together, and she was sitting down at her desk, ignoring the curious glances of others. The teacher was not the most motivated, and she often found herself tuning him out and doodling on her notebook. During lunch she reached for her bento and watched as everyone moved around the class to create their own little cliques. Some of them cast her curious glances, but none spoke to her. She didn’t care, opening her bento, and watching the way the loudest group of males surrounded Shuji who didn’t eat.
“Why doesn’t he bring a bento?” she suddenly turned to Akira to ask.
Startled he choked on the milk he was drinking, and then motioned to one of the open doors as a very pretty girl appeared. “That’s why.”
“Shuji!” someone shouted.
Suujii watched her new brother say his goodbyes to the group of males and then head out with the girl while some whistled and others ooh-ed and ah-ed. Turning back to Akira she found him watching her, those glowing eyes intense and perhaps a little too observant. She flushed and bowed over her bento before starting to eat.
At the end of the day as everyone was leaving she saw Shuji head for the bike area and she hurried after him. “Are you going straight home?”
He was unlocking his bike, and didn’t look up. “Why?”
The sound of annoyance in his voice made her lips purse in irritation. “I’m going to be late getting home and wondered if you could tell father and mother?”
Straightening he cast her a glance. “I wasn’t heading straight home. Where are you going anyway?”
“Why do you need to know? Will you tell me where you’re going?” she asked, one brow rising.
He climbed onto his bike. “I’m your older brother, I have a right to know. And I don’t have to tell you anything.”
Her eyes narrowed, and she flung her hair back, her chin rising stubbornly. “We’re the same age.” She twirled, and saw Akira watching them from where his bike was. Flushing she started to hurry off.
“You’re four months younger!” Shuji called to her. “That makes me your senior!” He tsk-ed in annoyance, and rode off in the other direction, grumbling that she should show her seniors more respect.
Akira watched them both leave, and then decided to follow after Shuji. “Shuji-kun!” he biked up beside the other male. “Why don’t you and your sister get along?”
“Step-sister,” Shuji snapped. “She’s annoying. Like you.”
Akira didn’t take offence. He laughed and when the other sped up he matched the speed. “She’s your family now, no matter what you say. You should protect her.” This time when Shuji sped up he let the other teen go, and turned towards his own home.
………………………
“I’m home!” Suujii called, removing her shoes and setting her school bag down by a small hallway table. She made her way to the back of the house where everyone was just starting to sit down to eat. “Sorry I’m late,” she said as she sat.
“Some of others from school are going out on Saturday and I think I’ll go too,” Shuji stated.
“Oh? Bring your sister along,” their father nodded.
Suujii’s head snapped up at that just as Shuji blinked and then waved a hand to indicate the negative. “It’s couples.”
“I’m sure one of your friends would like to go and wouldn’t mind escorting her,” their father continued.
“Oh, I don’t know if…”
“Shuji,” their father’s face set implacably. “You should be kind and include your sister in some of your activities so she’ll make friends and see more of the area, and to bond as family!”
Shuji stared at his father for a moment, and realized if he didn’t bring Suujii he wouldn’t be able to go either. “Fine.”
Suujii waved a hand frantically. “It’s fine, really. I…”
Their father smiled at her. “Now, now, it’s all going to be fine. You’ll have a great time!”
Shuji’s gaze narrowed on her, and he sneered slightly. His father, his biological father, loved his stepdaughter more than his own flesh and blood son!
