Zack ran a hand down his face, the letter in his hand shaking slightly. He dropped it on his bed and glared at it. He shouldn’t be afraid of a bunch of gibberish and symbols. But he was. The strange hieroglyphics made his stomach churn in fear no matter how much he told himself it was just a little prank.
“Hey Zacky, you ready for sound check?” Brian’s voice came from behind him, but it was muffled, like he was in his bunk. He quickly stuffed the letter between the wooden frame of his bunk and the mattress and turned to face his band mate hoping none of his stress was still showing on his face, “Yeah, I was on my way out.”
Brian pulled a bandana out of his bunk and wrapped it around his head before putting his hat on, “Awesome, let’s party.” He flashed him a smile and Zack did his best to return it but his face felt stiff.
He was yet to tell any of his friends about the letters, he’d been hoping for weeks now they would stop on their own. They seemed to be increasing in frequency though. He shook his head trying to clear it, they were almost to the stage and he didn’t want to give anyone reason to worry about him.
“Zack, you okay?” Brian asked quietly. Apparently he wasn’t as great an actor as he thought he was, “Yeah, I’m fine.” He forced lightness into his words and hoped the lead guitarist would drop the issue. No luck.
“You’ve been…I dunno, off, I guess for awhile now. We’re worried about you.” Brian’s armed slipped around his shoulders and held them closer together. Zack bit his lip, apparently he was a horrible actor.
“I’m fine, really, I think touring is just starting to wear at me a little.” An image of the most recent letter flashed through his mind and he shook himself to force the picture from his mind.
“Uh-huh.” Brian didn’t sound the least bit convinced, actually, he seemed distracted. Since he was searching for a way to scurry out of the spotlight he focused on him. “How about you? You’ve been staring off into space every fifteen minutes for like two weeks.”
Brian’s arm tightened on his shoulders and for the strangest reason Zack had the feeling that he was nervous, maybe even scared. The need to know about his friend’s problem was no longer about a distraction, now he was really worried about him, “Bri what’s wrong?” he slipped an arm around his waist and hugged him tightly for a second. Brian’s head fell lightly on his shoulder and he chuckled, though without humor, “How about we call it even.”
By this time they were at the stage and the cacophony from the set up dispelled some of the uncomfortable air around them both. They found the rest of the band hanging out at the stage; Zack livened up a bit more when he jumped into the mix with them. The heavy feeling that was always with him after he got one of his letters all but disappeared when Matt’s heavy arm draped around him. Brian stood by Jimmy and also seemed to relax; the nervousness that had surrounded him while they walked up was gone.
Later that night after the show the band was hanging out on the bus instead of hitting up the bars, they had to leave ASAP to get to the next show so the party had to be mobile. Zack was only on his second beer, but he had started later than everyone else. He was watching Brian, he looked nervous and tense again and was further behind than Zack with the drinking. His first beer was barely touched and he seemed to be keeping his distance from everyone.
“Guys…” Brian’s voice, shaky and thin, cut through their chatter faster than a yell and all eyes turned to him. Zack felt the overwhelming need to protect his friend, he looked absolutely terrified. No one moved but Zack’s eyes slid over to Jimmy, he was deeper into the booze than anyone else but his eyes were oddly clear and sharp as he watched his friend.
“Guys, I…” He looked out the window and absently ran a hand through his hair. The bus was silent for a moment while he fidgeted, abruptly he took a deep breath and then stared at the floor, “I’m gay.” His quiet whisper screamed through Zack’s head like a 747 and in the absolute silence that followed the declaration he thought he could hear Johnny’s heart beating on the other side of the room. The silence reigned for an uncomfortably long period of time. Brian didn’t look up, didn’t move, he almost seemed to shrink and curl in on himself the longer they were quiet. Zack tried to find something to say but his mind was still in the reboot process.
“Well,” Jimmy’s clear voice broke the oppressive silence like a thunder crack and Zack jumped a little, “the king is dead. Long live the queen.” He tossed back his shot of Jack and promptly poured himself another. Brian raised his head and a faint smile graced his lips. The room was quiet for another five seconds and then the rest of them burst into laughter. Zack got up, his mind finally back online, and easily pulled Brian into a hug, “I love you Brian, no matter what.” He kissed his cheek and Brian’s arms wrapped around his waist and pulled him close, “Thank you Zacky.” His voice was choked and his arms tightened around him.
A familiar and loved presence popped up next to him and he turned his head a little and caught Matt’s hand stroke down Brian’s cheek. Zack nuzzled him one last time and then stepped back to grab his beer. Brian curled against Matt and relaxed, his head pressed against his shoulder, Matt’s lips moved but the words didn’t reach Zack. Brian’s arms wrapped around his neck, so he had probably said something similar to what he had. Johnny slid in to the booth next to him and pressed a kiss to his neck before grabbing a bottle of Walker and refilling his glass. Jimmy was the only one who hadn’t moved, his head was back and he was staring at the ceiling. Maybe the lucidity he thought he’d seen was a trick of the light.
Matt let Brian go after a moment and the guitarist stared at the drummer before he got up and hesitantly went over and stood in front of him. Jimmy’s eyes were still firmly attached to the ceiling and Zack watched the two curiously, he knew Matt and Johnny were watching too ready for anything. Without saying a word Brian gracefully sank down and curled up on Jimmy’s lap, one arm circling his chest and his head buried in his neck. Jimmy finally moved, he reached up and ran his fingers through his short hair and down the nape of his neck. Brian relaxed and found a more comfortable position on him as his long fingers continued to stroke his hair.
A shadow loomed over him, behind it was a blindingly white light almost like a spotlight, but the edges were frayed and starting to blacken like fire crinkling the pages of paper. The words tumbled around him, words he couldn’t understand but still filled him with fear. Not even covering his ears could he escape the sound, it was inside his head. The low droning voice filled every inch of his mind until he thought he would either explode or go mad.
The chant became louder, his head was going to split, the noise was so great it brought tears of pain to his eyes. He screamed in pain and anger and tried to swing at the shadow. As soon as he got close to it though fire licked across his knuckles. He brought his hand back and cradled his burned fingers close to his chest while the noise continued to crescendo.
Zack sat up holding his head in his hands, a wicked headache working its way across his temples down to his neck. He’d been having that same god awful dream since the letters started and every time he woke up with a headache and nausea. His stomach actually felt worse this time, though with all the drinking he’d done the regular side effects of the dream were probably teaming up with the killer hangover he knew he was going to have.
Something warm dripped down his chin, he wiped his eyes thinking he’d cried in his sleep again but they were dry. “Shit.” He cursed softly and felt around under his mattress for the small wad of tissues he kept there. He grabbed the first thing his fingers came in contact with and stuffed it against his nose hoping he hadn’t gotten too much blood on the sheets. Whatever he had though wasn’t a Kleenex, he cursed again when he remembered he’d stuffed the letter beneath his mattress too. Much as he didn’t want the creepy thing near him, much less his face, he kept it there while he resumed his search for the tissues.
When he finally found them he tossed the letter disgustedly to the end of the bunk and held the Kleenexes to his nose. His headache was growing worse and he was feeling sicker, he hoped his nose would be done leaking soon so he could go back to sleep. He squirmed uncomfortably in pain tried to keep his sounds of distress quiet.
He gave up after a few minutes and stuffed the entire wad of tissues under his nose and stretched out again so he could sleep. Exhaustion was weighing on him like a ton of bricks and he was pretty sure he was going to pass out from the pain in his head anyway. Sleep claimed him as soon as his head hit the pillow.
A/N: Short chapter, but the next one should be quite interesting, lol
