The sun’s rays shone through the partially open blinds, illuminating the room, waking up Zacky from his slumber. He reached out his arm in search of Brian, but instead found an empty space. Zacky looked over to the clock and saw that it was ten in the morning, too early for his tastes. Usually, his wake up time was well past noon. Seeing no point in going back to sleep, Zacky reluctantly rose from his comfy, warm bed that he shared with his lover. In just his boxers, he left the bedroom and entered the kitchen to the aromas of breakfast cooking on the stove.
After finding Zacky half dead, Brian finally professed his love to the smaller man. Upon entering his bedroom, time seemed to slow down and the whispered words of wanted rescue sped up the slowed down time. His heart was pounding in his chest when he ran downstairs and nearly pounced on his phone that was lying on the couch, where he had been sitting. Matt and Jimmy had looked at him with confusion on their faces, but Johnny noticed the panicked expression on Brian’s face. Johnny immediately took off for Zacky’s room.
Johnny was the only one who knew about Zacky’s depression and his battle with self injury. He had promised Johnny that he had quit, but it had become obvious that he hadn’t when Brian came running down the stairs. He was foolish to believe that Zacky had stopped, since he knew how it could become an addiction to some people.
Johnny had been one of the unlucky ones that knew the troubles of that addiction. He started at the age of 12, when his mom died and his dad blamed her death on him. Beatings would occur daily and he used cutting to prove that he was still alive and to use what little control he had on himself. Jimmy had been the one to help him stop. Jimmy showed him that he was loveable and that there were other ways to cope without the splitting skin and spilling of blood. The joining of the band helped with his aid to recovery.
Entering his room, Johnny saw Zacky lying on his bed with deep gashes on both of his wrists. The amount of blood flowing from the wounds was tremendous. He quickly ran to the bathroom and retrieved two hand towels and ran back to Zacky’s side. He used the towels to press down on the cuts to stop the bleeding. The towels were quickly being soaked through with blood and by the time that Brian, followed by the rest of the band, came back babbling about the ambulance coming, Zacky was unconsciousness.
Jimmy and Matt starred at their fellow band member and close friend. They were in shock as to why the sight in front of them was happening. Everyone’s mind was in chaos while waiting for the EMT’s to arrive. Tears were running down their faces as questions as to why they hadn’t noticed his behavioral changes. Why didn’t they see them and save him before it was too late?
The ambulance arrived and Brian was the one to join him in the ambulance. Everyone else rode in Matt’s car. The ride to the hospital in the car was ladled with silence and heavy thinking. They followed the ambulance mile by mile to the nearest hospital. If they were pulled over due to speeding, they would ignore the sirens in favor of seeing if Zacky would survive, despite the heavy blood loss.
Nurses met the ambulance that held Zacky outside the entrance with a gurney and prepared for the worst. They got him onto the gurney and rushed him inside. As they were rolling him into a hospital room, the band had just arrived and directed to wait in the waiting room. Tears were running down every one of their faces, except for Matt, who started to demand if one of them knew about Zacky’s depression. Johnny raised his hand and Matt immediately asked why he hadn’t mentioned it to anyone. He explained that Zacky promised that he was getting help, then proceeded to tell them all what he knew had been plaguing Zacky.
When Johnny finished his story, the doctor came out and explained that they stitched up Zacky’s wounds and they were giving him a blood transfusion. The outcome of whether or not if Zacky would make it through the night was unclear. They were allowed to go into his room and everyone was shocked to see the even paler skin of the guitarist. His wrists were heavily bandaged and spotting of blood was starting to show on the inside of his wrists. Everyone prayed that he would be ok and after this horrible ordeal, they would be able to give him the support he needs.
The night for all them was spent in a fitful sleep. Brian was the only one who did not get a wink. He sat by Zacky’s hospital bed and held his hand, asking him to wake up and whispering words of love. The night was a long one for all of them, but the morning held a promise of hope for all. Zacky had been showing signs of waking up and the doctor had come in and said that his vitals looked good and he was stable. The doctor said that he should be waking up at any time and he would be able to leave the same day, but he would need to set up an appointment for a psych evaluation.
About an hour later, when it was only Brian in the room, Zacky woke up. Seeing that Zacky was awake, Brian began to cry and tell Zacky that he loved him. Brian promised to make up for all the times he had the chance to tell him, but chickened out. Zacky cried along with Brian and reassured him with his own love. Emotions of happiness and sadness filled the room, especially when Jimmy, Johnny and Matt entered the room. Everyone was grateful that Zacky had survived and no one left him alone for fear of this being a dream and he would disappear when they left the room.
The day was a busy one, which included: setting up the psych evaluation and going to it before checking out of the hospital, going home, and watching movies with the whole band. When it was time for bed, both Brian and Zacky went to Brian’s room. There were two reasons for that: one was because the blood on Zacky’s bed was still there and now that Brian and Zack, he didn’t want to sleep without his love. The both of them fell asleep to sounds of each other’s heartbeats and right before Zacky drifted off, he whispered in Brian’s ear:
“Thank you for saving me.”
Brian gave him a kiss on the temple and told him that he would always be there to save him.

Those two days were some of the worst in Brian’s life, but they also brought him to his greatest joy. Seeing Zacky walk into the kitchen with the dazed look in his eyes and yawning, he was so glad that he went up those stairs and into his room to check up on Zacky because if he hadn’t he wouldn’t be able to spend the rest of his life with the person that matters most in his life.
Zacky noticed Brian smiling at him and he smiled back. His depression had receded, but it was still there in hiding, waiting for the most opportune moment to pounce. Every once in a while, he feels the urge to start cutting again, but one look at Brian reminds him of who he is living for. What will happen when Brian will stops being the reason to be happy? When will he not be enough? Will he blame him for his renewed unhappiness? Most importantly, will Zacky blame Brian for his failed attempt at death?
Maybe…just maybe.
