Chapter 1:
Even from inside the busy kitchen of ‘Sanders’, the noise of a super charged muscle car pulling up in the car park out the back made all the kitchen staff eagerly look out the window, ignoring the noises their food was making as it began to overcook. They all had their faces pressed against the window watching as a man, who stood just over 6 foot climb out of his brand new cherry Mustang. They watched as the man, who was wearing a pair of skin tight black jeans with a fitted v-neck white shirt that stretched over his broad shoulders that accentuated his sleeves of tattoos and a pair of old skate shoes, made his way closer to the back entrance door of the restaurant.
The girls were giggling at everything about him, the way his hair was perfectly spiked, along with his perfectly trimmed beard and just his everything. There was no denying that this guy was hot. They all knew who this was. This was their brand new head chef, who would be replacing their old one, who left unexpectedly to be with his girlfriend in London after he had scored a job working for Gordon Ramsay. They watched as the owner, Matthew Sanders made his way out to greet him, wearing his trademark black pants with black and white pinstriped shirt, which was usually left slightly unbuttoned, revealing his chest piece tattoo slightly, the rest hidden by his long sleeved shirt.
The kitchen staff all returned hastily to their jobs as they saw their boss and the new head chef walking towards their door, eager to meet his new co-workers. As the pair entered the kitchen, they were greeted with half a dozen eager faces. Matt stood proudly in front of them, but the staff’s faces were locked onto the new chef’s, who took off his Dolce & Gabana sunglasses to reveal he not only had enviable body, but a rather attractive face, his cheek bones highly accentuated as he smirked at them slightly.
“Everyone, this is Brian Haner. He will be taking over James’ old position of Head Chef.” Matt announced to them all. He couldn’t take the grin off his face. Brian smirked when he was announced to them all; his eyes taking in the 6 of them that were standing there in the kitchen with them.
“Okay, so introductions. This is Veronique, she is our kitchen hand.” Matt said, indicating to a larger, pretty girl with long dark hair that was pulled back into a bun hidden underneath her chef’s hat. She blushed when Brian nodded at her. “This is Mick, he is our Sous Chef.” He said, indicating to a tall, skinny man, who was like Brian and Matt, was covered in tattoos. “And our Pastry Chef Rose.” He added, pointing to a rather skinny, petite and pretty girl who grinned widely at Brian, who cocked an eyebrow up, thoroughly amused that this girl was practically throwing herself at him. “This is Dean; he does all the preparation and most of the cooking on the meats and vegetables.” He indicated towards a man of about the same height and build as Brian, but with no tattoos. “This is Toby, our Dessert Chef.” He indicated towards another man that was tall, skinny and tattooed. “And last but not least, this is Zack. He will be your assistant.” He said, leaving the only man, who was small and slender with black hair that covered half his face and snake bite piercings that adorned both sides of his lips, give him a big smile. Brian smirked even wider, looking Zack up and down, definitely liking what he was seeing.
Zack looked back, watching Brian’s eyes practically strip away the clothing he was wearing, his cheeks becoming immediately flushed. He couldn’t deny that he was very attracted to this man. He looked over to his boss, who shot him a disapproving look and he immediately dropped his head, eyes away from both of his bosses that stood in front of him.
“Zack, come into my office. I’d like to have a word with you and Brian.” Matt said and Zack looked up, nodding, following the two larger men out of the kitchen and into Matt’s office.
Zack’s eyes dragged across Brian’s back while he and Matt walked ahead of Zack. He could hardly believe that this sort of man existed, someone of absolute perfection. He was hardly noticing when they entered Matt’s office, too busy checking out his new Head Chef, the Edward Cullen-esque aura that followed him was too hard not to notice him before every one else in the room.
Matt closed the door behind the pair before going to sit at his desk, indicating to both Zack and Brian to take a seat on the two chairs on the other side of the desk. He smiled as he watched the pair of them, knowing immediately that the pair would be one of the best working duo’s he’d ever seen. “First of all, Brian, I would like to welcome you to ‘Sanders’, you will be treated like family now you’re one of us.” He smiled warmly at his new employee.
“Really Matt, the pleasure is all mine.” Brian smirked; his voice was one that Zack would never get sick of hearing. It was not as deep as Matt’s, but more aesthetically pleasing, the words flowing from his mouth like warm honey. “I’ve always loved eating at this place, so now I feel even more privileged to be the Head Chef here.”
Matt smiled, a genuine one that not many people really got to see, considering how stressed out he usually was, hardly cracking a smile for anyone. “As you know, this is Zack and he will be your Assistant Chef.” He said, Brian taking another chance to glance at his new colleague and smirk. “I would like the two of you to get to know each other, and as tonight is a Tuesday and we’re normally not too busy, I would like the two of you to go out to dinner, while the rest of the staff takes over for the night.”
“That’s very generous of you Matt, but won’t you need at least one of us to help out in the kitchen? I do not doubt the rest of the staff, but I just worry that the dinner service won’t be up to scratch.” Brian said concern present in his voice.
“I will also be in the kitchen, helping out.” Matt said confidently. “I’ve only worked in the hospitality industry, and after I completed my Hospitality Management Diploma, I worked full time as a Chef for Michellini’s, becoming a Head Chef at 23 before I saved up and bought my own restaurant.”
“Impressive.” Brian smiled. “I’m certain that the restaurant will be in safe hands after we leave.”
Matt smiled again. “Zack, can you please go back to work while Brian and I discuss the menu? I’ll get Brian to come get you when he’s ready to go.”
Zack nodded before he stood up and left the room. He headed back to the kitchen and as soon as he entered, the five other staff members practically cornered him. Zack looked around at all of them, feeling a little anxious. “Yes?” he asked.
“Well, what happened in there?” Rose enquired. She was the always the nosiest.
“Nothing really.” Zack answered, hearing mumbles of disagreement. “Matt wants me and Brian to get to know each other, so we’re going out to dinner tonight, which means Matt will be in charge tonight.”
“You’re so lucky to be going out to dinner with him! I’m sooo jealous!” Veronique said dramatically, which caused many eye rolls in her direction.
“Do you want to be any more fucking desperate Veronique?” Dean snarled at her, causing her to move away from the group and continue washing up the dishes they needed.
“Come on guys, let’s get back to work.” Zack said, causing more grumbles from them, but the group knew when to listen.
They all worked constantly for another two hours, barely talking and only concentrating on their tasks before the dinner service began. This was when both Matt and Brian walked in; Matt dressed in his old Head Chef’s uniform. “Alright, team, let’s do this dinner service.” He said enthusiastically. “Zack, Brian’s going to take you home so you can go get changed. I’ll see you later.”
“Bye.” Zack said in a quiet voice while Matt took over what he was doing. He grabbed his bag and washed his hands before following Brian out of restaurant and to his car.
Brian unlocked it with a small beep and the two climbed in. Zack couldn’t believe how nice the car was. It looked amazing from the outside and looked even better inside. The seats were leather and the dashboard was freshly polished and a nice mahogany colour, which complimented the car nicely. Brian started up the car and the music played loudly, the sound system just as good as the rest of the car. Brian turned the music down while Zack directed him to his house.
“You’ve got a very nice car.” Zack said, almost in awe.
“Thanks.” Brian smirked. “I’ve worked pretty hard for this car. I’ve saved my money since I’ve started working to even get a Mustang and put even more money into doing it up the way I’ve always wanted it. I suppose this car is like my baby. Sorta like the restaurant is Matt’s.” Zack laughed. “What?”
“The restaurant is only one of Matt’s babies.” He grinned. “He’s worked ridiculously hard for everything he owns.”
“You seem to know a lot about our boss. Are you good friends with him?” Brian asked, glancing at Zack for a second.
“You could say that.” Zack said, looking at the driver, smirking slightly. “It’s this one here, with the black drive way.”
Brian pulled into the drive way, nearly hitting the large black security gate as he was entranced by how large the house in front of him was. The house could only be classified as a mansion, and it was only then that Brian realized they were in one of the richest suburbs of Orange County. The mansion was white with a black roof and stretched across the entire property line. It has elegant, large windows scattered across the two story mansion, which Brian knew would be facing the beach.
“You can drive through now.” Zack said, snapping Brian out of his trance.
Brian let out the clutch and slowly drove up the drive way while the gate closed behind him and pulled up in front of the mansions’ large, wooden front door. Brian pulled the hand break on and the two got out of the car. “Nice house, man.” Brian said, still in awe of the giant house. “Do you own it?”
“Sure do.” Zack smiled as the door opened and he led Brian through the house. “I’m just gonna have a shower and get changed, so make yourself at home man. The remotes to the TV are on the table and help yourself to a drink if you’re thirsty.”
“Yeah, no hurry man. I’m sure I’ll find something to keep me entertained while you get ready.” Brian grinned.
Zack nodded and Brian could hear his feet thumping up the stairs while he walked around the large living room. He could hardly believe that his employee that was below him and earned far less then he did would be able to own a house like this. He walked over to the window and sure enough, the beautiful, gold sand and deep blue water of Huntington Beach could be seen from the window, along with the large pool that was in the backyard.
He turned around and noticed there was some photo frames on top of the fire place. He walked over to them to get a better look. He could see that they all had Matt in them. He could see a few of them were ones from school with a large group of friends, one of them was a picture with all the people from the restaurant with someone who he assumed was the former Head Chef as there was another photo with just him and Zack. But there was one photo that caught Brian’s attention. It looked like it was from a wedding because Matt had on a suit and looked like he was a best man and Zack was wearing a red, fitted dress shirt with a pair of black pants. Zack was sitting on his lap, with Matt’s arms around him and they were sharing a kiss. Brian was in total shock. He had an inkling Zack may be gay, but definitely not Matt.
“That’s my absolute favourite picture of me and Matt.” He heard Zack’s voice say from behind him. He put down the photo immediately and turned to look at him. “Don’t worry, I don’t mind you looking.” He said with a smile.
“So, you and Matt, huh?” Brian said with a sly grin.
“Yeah, we’re a big homo couple.” Zack laughed.
“Nice photo man. Looks like it was taken at a wedding?” He asked.
“Yeah, it was at Matt’s sister’s wedding.” Zack smiled. “I’m ready when you are.”
Brian nodded and made his way out of the house, followed closely by Zack. The pair got in the car and got to the end of the drive way when Brian realized he didn’t know where they were going. “Where we going?” Brian asked, turning to his passenger.
“Well, I made reservations at AVP on Pacific. It’s a really quaint, Italian restaurant that specializes in Vegetarian cuisine but does some really amazing meat dishes too.” Zack smiled and Brian had already started driving to the restaurant.
The pair didn’t really talk much on the drive over to the restaurant, only commenting on whatever song came on in the car. Brian found a park quickly and the pair made their way into the restaurant, being seated up the back and in the corner. They had been waiting nearly five minutes when the waitress came and took their orders. “Hi guys, what can I get for you?” She beamed, her bouncy personality matching her blonde hair perfectly.
“I’ll have the Chicken parmigiana.” Brian said. “With a light beer.”
“And I’ll have the Beef lasagna with a beer.” Zack smiled as the pair handed her their recipes.
“No worries. Shouldn’t be too long guys.” She grinned again, walking away.
She returned not even a minute later with their two drinks and then left again. “So, how long have you known Matt for?” Brian asked, after taking a long gulp from his beer, Zack doing the same.
“Pretty well my whole life. We met in first grade and it’s been awesome since then. We’ve been together for almost ten years.” He answered, a different look going across his face. “Shit, that’s a long time.” He laughed. “Are you seeing anyone?”
“Nah, I had a pretty horrible experience with dating a long time and now I just stay single and fuck whoever I want, really.” Brian smirked, wrapping his lips around the top of the beer bottle and taking a long drink, not realizing the things it was doing to Zack’s lower region.
The pair enjoyed their meal and talked about everything, getting to know each other, just like Matt had suggested, but Zack could feel something in him pining for the man he’d just had dinner with. Maybe it was just the attraction, he didn’t really know.
They paid their bill and got into the car and Brian drove them back towards Zack’s house. He pulled up at the large black gate to Zack’s house, where they could see the light on in the living room.
“It was nice to get to know you Zack.” Brian said, turning to look at his fellow employee.
“Yeah, it was nice to get to know you too man. I think we did what Matt wanted us to.” Zack beamed at his Head Chef.
“Alright, well I’ll see you tomorrow.” Brian said, smiling at Zack still.
“Yep, bye.” Zack said, looking at the driver for a moment before he leant over and pressed a kiss to his lips. He quickly realized that he definitely shouldn’t have done that. “Sorry.” He mumbled, not looking at Brian as he reached for the door and opened it.
“I don’t think you are Zack.” Brian said, but Zack ignored it. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
Zack didn’t say anything as he made his way up to his house, in fact he ignored Brian’s car pulling out of the drive way. He couldn’t believe that he had just done that, acted on an attraction when he had a perfectly happy environment at home. He wasn’t sure what was going to happen now, but he hoped that nothing at work was going to change.
