Save Me:
The sun was blazing high above, but as he approached his destination, a large two storey house overlooking the beach, all he felt was cold and darkness. He took a deep breath as he ascended the stairs that lead to the front door, panting slightly from the heat. He stood on the porch, staring at the front door for a moment, almost as though he was contemplating even knocking the door. Wondering if this was even the right thing to do. He removed his aviators from his sweaty face, folded one arm of them into the inside of his shirt and the other lay on the outside with the lenses, before knocking three times on the mahogany coloured door.
The large, well built and heavily tattooed man waited patiently for the door to open. He didn’t have to wait long as a man, rather skinny in build, but looked as though he shouldn’t be, with long shaggy black hair and heavily tattooed slowly opened the door. The two locked eyes for a moment, hazel staring into brown, trying to recognize each other. “Matt.” The smaller of the two croaked, cracking the smallest of smiles.
“Brian.” Matt said in a soft voice. “I just wanted to see how you were.” He said in an even softer voice, earning a hard look from Brian, who reluctantly opened the door widely and gestured the larger man to enter his home.
Matt walked into the house, immediately noticing how dirty and dusty his friend’s home was. As soon as he had walked clear of the door, he heard a loud bang, which was Brian slamming the door. He turned around quickly, moving a hand to chest to regain his breathing.
“You’ve got some fuckin’ nerve showing up here, I hope you know.” Brian yelled at his friend. “You were no where when I fuckin’ needed you, and now you show up when I learn how to be by myself.”
“Brian, I’m-” Matt started but was silenced.
“I don’t want or need your fuckin’ apologies.” Brian yelled, his eyes blazing only hatred towards the other man. “I’ve been doing fine without you, so tell me what you fuckin’ want or get out of my house.”
“I came by to see you.” Matt said plainly, only earning a g"lare from Brian. “You can believe me or not, but I know you’re not doing fine. I mean, look at you for fuck’s sake.” He said, his voice raising slightly in volume.
“And how the fuck would you even know what it feels like?” Brian stormed.
“He was my friend too!” Matt protested, pleading with his friend.
“You have no fucking idea.” Brian said before walking into another room in the house, prompting Matt to follow.
“Brian, please.” Matt said plainly, after following his friend into the lounge room.
“Matt.” Brian sighed, landing himself onto a chair. He reached for a bottle of Jack Daniels that was already half empty and took a long drink from it before putting it back on his coffee table. “Jack is my new best friend.”
Matt ran his fingers through his short hair. “I’m really worried about you, man.” He said softly, taking a seat on the lounge next to the chair Brian was in.
Brian snorted. “Yeah, I can tell. ‘Cause this is the first time you’ve actually come to see me since it fuckin’ happened.”
“I couldn’t leave the house for weeks. You have no idea what it was like for me too.” Matt said calmly, trying to quell the tears that were trying to spill out of his eyes. “I didn’t want to make you feel worse by me crying all the time around you.”
“I would have preferred the company.” Brian said softly, avoiding eye contact with the other man.
“I wasn’t thinking straight. And for that I’m sorry.” Matt apologized, trying to gain eye contact with the other man, who was resisting very strongly. “I know I can’t even imagine to know what it felt like to loose someone like that, but I want you to know that I’m here now and I’m not leaving.”
“Thank you.” Brian said softly as a single tear rolled down his cheek. He leant over to pick up a photo frame that Matt didn’t quite catch who the photo was of. He ran his hand over the picture in the frame as Matt watched on curiously.
“Can I see?” Matt asked bravely, perhaps a little too eagerly.
Brian looked up at the other man, who was on the brink of tears already and nodded. “The last photo of Zack and I.” He said, handing over the frame. “I wish I could have known how sad he was.”
Matt held the silver frame in his hands. It was a photo taken roughly a year ago of the pair down at the beach, both wearing oversized sunglasses and huge grins on their faces, looking the picture of happiness. He couldn’t help the tear that escaped his eye and dripped right onto Zack’s face. Or the other tears that kept coming afterwards.
Before he knew it, he had completely broken down and found he was unable to stop crying. Brian moved over to the couch and put a reassuring arm around his friend, trying to comfort him. After a few more minutes of intense crying, Matt’s breathing slowly regained to it’s normal rate and he could finally talk with sobs coming out with every word.
“I’m sorry about that.” Matt said after a few minutes.
“Don’t be.” Brian said, smiling softly. “It’s comforting to know that I’m not the only one who’s still crying about him.”
“You never will be.” Matt said, turning his head to observe his friend. “Brian, how are you?” He asked abruptly, making the other man pull back from his comforting.
“I’m fine.” He answered warily, observing the other man through a furrowed brow. “Why?”
“Just making sure you are.” Matt said softly. “I was worried for a while that you might do the same thing he did and I wouldn’t be able to help you.”
“I did think about it, but in the end, I’m just a coward.” Brian muttered.
“A coward? If anything, he’s a coward!” Matt said suddenly, causing Brian to jump slightly in his seat. “He was the one who ran. You’re the one who’s staying.”
“I loved him so much.” Brian mumbled. “You have no idea how badly I wish I could see him just one more time.”
“Please don’t think like that.” Matt said sternly, trying to look at his friend, but he was avoiding all eye contact.
“I think you should go Matt.” Brian said abruptly. “Thank you for coming over.”
He stood up as quickly as he spoke and headed out to where the front door was. Matt followed, slowly and reluctantly. He saw Brian holding the door open and watching him without making a sound.
Matt reached him within a few steps and hugged his friend tightly. “Please promise me you won’t do anything stupid.”
“Save me” Brian whispered so softly it was barely audible.
“What was that?” Matt asked, pulling out of the hug.
“Nothing.” Brian murmured. “See you later.”
“Bye.” Matt said, before the door was closed in his face.
He put his sunglasses back on, stepping back out into the harsh sunlight and towards his car. As he opened the door, he looked back at his friend’s house, fearing that perhaps his friend would do something stupid. He sighed as he got into his car and drove home.
As he fell asleep that night, his dreams were plagued by violent images of his friend’s death. He woke up numerous times throughout the night, having too much trouble falling back asleep. He woke up completely at around 7.30am the next morning to a loud knocking on the door. He rolled out of bed, pulled on some clothes, immediately noticing his wife not being next to him.
He opened the door to be greeted by two police officers. “Mr. Matthew Sanders?” The taller, older one asked. Matt nodded. “May we come inside?” Matt nodded, moving aside and staying silent while the two officers made their way into Matt’s house. They took seats on the couch in the lounge room while Matt sat on the recliner chair.
“We have some bad news for you.” The older man spoke. “Your friend Brian Haner was found dead this morning in his house. There are no suspects because we are almost certain it was a suicide. We found this note addressed to you lying on the floor below Mr. Haner’s body.”
The officer handed Matt the note that had his full name scrawled messily on the top. He opened the letter and stood staring at the words that were staring back at him.
“Save me.
I’m trapped in a vile world
Where the end game’s all the same as every other
We’re only here to die.
Tonight we all die young.”
The words brought tears to Matt’s eyes as he continued to re-read the note over and over again. “Thank you for bringing me this.” He said, through muffled sobs to the two officers who sat awkwardly next to him.
“I think we’ll take our leave now.” The older officer spoke. “We have spoken to his parents already, who will no doubt be in contact with you soon to arrange funeral plans. We are deeply sorry for your loss.”
Matt said nothing as he heard the two men leave, closing the door softly behind them. He held his head in his hands, covering his eyes. He continued to take deep breaths, but he couldn’t calm down. It felt like another piece of his heart had been ripped from him.
He had absolutely no idea what the next step was. All he knew was that he was going to remain strong.
End.
