The picture stared blankly back at her from where it sat gracefully on the surface of her desk, the bright green of the grass contrasting boldly with the cherry wood of her workspace, giving it a sort of glow as she traced her fingers over the main subject of the photo. Her expression held a soft smile placed upon full lips, her gray-blue eyes held complete admiration, though some would find it questioning why she held such a love for the photo. It wasn’t of a person, or even a childhood pet, but the ruins of the Aberystwyth Castle. The photo was of one of the main towers, her eyes fixated on the small white bridge that led to its open door, crossing over a once filled river.
Her attention was pulled reluctantly away as she heard a knock at her open door, as her head whipped around to see who it was, her auburn hair shifting across her back, falling loosely down to its lower middle. She looked through her side swept bangs at the short, older man who smiled at her through a think peppered mustache. She returned the smile politely as her eyes drifted to the think yellow envelope in his hand, catching her attention. “Hello, Miss Sara Jay.” He smiled, his familiar nick name for her ringing through her ears with the somewhat high pitched tone in his voice. “You’ve got some interesting mail today.” “Interesting meaning something other than bills for once?” She mused with a raised brow as she stood up to approach the company mailman, taking the outstretched envelope with haste, along with the few smaller white ones that she made a mental point to avoid, knowing they were just asking for money she owed. He answered with more laughter than was really needed for the comment, the action simply in his nature of being overly kind. It was refreshing though, for her at least. They said their goodbyes as Sara walked back over to her desk, tossing the smaller envelopes on her desk and looking at the one of interest, her eyes shooting straight to the sender, the first two words catching her interest immediately. ‘Destination Truth’ Her mouth dropped open slightly, a chill running straight through her body. Had she won? She’d seen the offers online to be a guest star on the show for five episodes, and while many skills were required and a certain base of knowledge, millions had still applied. And yet, she had won? Of all people, she never thought it would be picked. Entering was mostly just a drunken leap of faith on a lonely Saturday night. Deciding not to get too excited before even opening it, the thought that it could also simply be an apology for not making it, accompanied by autographed pictures or something, she opened it hastily, pulling out the large stack of papers, secretly relieved that there was no photo paper as far as she could tell. She skimmed over the letter quickly, a smile growing larger the more she read. Dear Sara Jane Marinna, We are more than ecstatic to inform you that you have been hand selected to join the cast of Destination Truth for a total of five episodes as explained on the website. Your application has proved that you are more than fit for the trials you will be presented with which will include hiking, caving, rock climbing, and several other tasks that may present themselves as a challenge. If you rethink taking this on due to the extreme measures, we fully understand and request that you let us know as soon as possible so we may find another candidate. Sara shook her head absentmindedly at the thought of giving something like this up, having understood the risks when she sent in her resume. The rest of the letter was more on cautions about poisonous insects and other risks, along with phone numbers and the time the plane she would be taking to meet up with the team in LA was going to take off. Seeing the dates, only one month away, she let out a loud scream as she jumped in place a few times, holding the letter up to her chest, a huge grin stretching across her face. She spun around a few times before hearing the familiar sound of her boss clearing his throat. She turned around in an abrupt jolt, catching his eye as he raised a brow at her, his arms crossed over his puffed out chest; puffed out in a stance to show how much he worked on his muscles, not out of anger. “…what’s going on?” He asked oddly, glancing around her room once before looking back to her, his eyes wandering up and down her form, something he did often. It wasn’t a secret that he wanted in her pants, despite how strict he was about office relationships. “Um,” she squirmed under his gaze, “I won that contest I entered. The one that will let me explore different architectural sites,” she smiled proudly, holding the letter closer subconsciously, catching his attention. He walked over, grabbing the paper in a place a bit too close to her chest and pulled it out of her grasp, noting her look of disapproval. “’Destination Truth’” he read, looking at her oddly, “I thought this was going to help with your studies to become a successful architect, not in looking for things that don’t exist.” He scolded, having been lead to think this was a program for students. “You should see the places they get to explore! And the host is an architect, I can learn a lot from him!” She argued, giving him a sharp glare, silently threatening that she would kill him if he killed the opportunity for her. He looked at her helplessly for a long moment before sighing, “how long will you be gone?” With a click of her heels she perked up, an excited smile taking place on her expression, “It’s going to be about four months, though I’ll have a lot of leave time in between when they’re taking breaks from shooting.” “Will you be able to come back to work at those times?” He asked, trying not to smile at her cute reaction. “No, that would be way too expensive!” She challenged, though her real reasoning just being that she wanted to stay in LA and enjoy the sun. Her home in Seattle was nice, but the summer wasn’t as beneficial as it was in California. He grimaced a bit, searching for a reason to keep her at work, but there really wasn’t any other than the fact that he liked to watch her around the office. With a sigh of defeat, he hung his head down, “okay, you can go.” “Paid leave?” She pressed; leaning down a little to let her incomplete set of buttons on her blouse come into action, showing a hint of cleavage, the site he quickly caught on to. “Yeah, yeah,” he groaned, handing her back the letter and turning to leave the office as quickly as possible. With another spin, she squealed under her breath. She was going to California! ONE MONTH LATER The plane had finally landed to her relief. She hated flying, and she tried to get out of the flight so she could simply drive, California being so close by, but the company had already bought the round trip tickets. That only holding meaning to her with the fact that it meant she had to get on a plane again when going home, and she was sure she’d be on several other when traveling to each location. She practically ran off the plane and into the airport, whether that was from fear or excitement she wasn’t really sure, nor did she really care. She just wanted to get to her bags and meet up with whoever was coming to pick her up. Though before heading to baggage claim, she found time to slip into the bathroom and go over her outfit and hair, making sure everything was okay. She had dressed in casual jean shorts, torn up a bit on the front of each leg, the color faded in from the center out. The shorts also had a tear on the back, dangerously close to her butt, but far enough away not to show any underwear. Her shirt was a simple white thick strapped tank top that fell loosely around her waist, a strap at the end pulling it tight to hug around her hips. Her skin was rather tanned for someone from Washington, which she hoped to darken during her time in California, and wherever else they went. Their trips were kept secret from her, much to her dismay. Her auburn hair was pulled back into a messy bun, her bangs swept across her forehead, touching the few strips of hair that she left down to frame her face. Satisfied with everything, she took a breath of confidence before stepping back out into the crowded hallways and followed the signs that lead to baggage claim, where she was told her “escorts” would be waiting. After the long walk in LA’s no less than huge airport, she finally caught sight of the rotating ramps, circling around as more and more luggage piled on. She followed down the line until she found the one with her flight number and stood amongst the crowd, glancing around every now and then at the groups of people holding up signs, waiting for whoever it was they would be meeting up with. On her third glance at the groups, her breath caught in her throat. She didn’t need to see the sign to know they were there for her, their faces more than recognizable. A few people had noticed, and were surrounding them, asking for autographs which they gratefully signed, taking pictures while looking around every so often for what she assumed hopefully was for her. She turned back around with a smile, ‘Josh Gates and Casey Brumels are waiting in an airport to see me!’ She thought excitedly, trying not to jump again as she looked at the passing bags. She wasn’t exactly the type of fan they were probably used to. Not for Josh at least. She started watching the show when she came across an episode that showed beautiful structures, and once she learned that Josh was an architect, she just sort of got hooked. It definitely wasn’t for the things they searched for. She was a big skeptic. She just happened to form a bit of a fan-crush on Casey, which she had to admit at times made it difficult to focus on the buildings and ruins they so luckily got to explore. She’d already sworn not to let that get in the way though, positive he had plenty of other, much prettier options. Finally catching site of her bag, she lugged it off of the ramp with minor difficulty before walking over to the small crowd of people surrounding the two, waiting patiently. They were talking animatedly to the people, a huge smile on Josh’s face as he made as many witty remarks as he could, even off camera he held up to his reputation of sarcasm. She caught each of their eye a few times, though she was sure they looked around at everyone as much as they could, trying to be as friendly as possible, she was sure it had to be annoying. It would be for her. “Okay! Are any of you the person we’re actually supposed to be talking to?” Josh exclaimed loudly, looking around skeptically as a few girls cooed in with comments about how they wanted to talk to him, which only made him grin as Sara and Casey both seemed to laugh in unison, making her stomach feel a bit lighter that it already was. Remembering that was herself, she raised her hand, “um,” she started quietly, “that’s me.” Her voice was murmured, feeling awkward around so many people along with her idol. “Sorry, you’ll have to speak louder,” Josh chimed, looking at her once before looking over to a ticket that was held out to him that he quickly signed. “I’m…” she started but was cut off by a louder blonde girl who pushed her way closer to the two of them, making Sara grimace in annoyance. She didn’t like overly loud people. “I’m the contest winner!” She finally shouted just loud enough to be heard, catching both of their attention. “Oh!” Josh grinned as he pushed gently through the crowd, being followed closely by Casey who depended on him to clear a path. They both stood side to side, Josh towering over everyone with his height as he smiled boldly down to her. “Sara,” she smiled, holding her hand out to Josh first who shook it excitedly, then to Casey whose grip was gentle, but firm, his smile bright, though not nearly as bright as Josh’s. “Nice to meet the both of you, thank you so much for this opportunity.” “Of course, your resume was outstanding. You didn’t lie, did you?” Josh questioned, leaning in and making a face as if he was being serious, which she almost believed. She stared at him for a moment before letting out a short laugh, “um, no. Promise,” she answered a bit awkwardly, leaning back a little with the sudden movement towards her. Josh laughed as Casey rolled his eyes, tugging on his shoulder. “Let’s not freak the girl out before we even get her out of the airport, Josh.” He laughed, looking down at her bag for a moment before holding his hand out. “I’ll carry that,” he smiled, tugging at the duffle she had slung over her shoulder. “Oh!” She chirped as it was taken away from her, “thank you.” She smiled, sighing in a bit of relief to herself. It was the heavier of the two bags she brought, the other rather large, but it was a roller and she could handle it. And as if to answer that fact in the opposite, Josh took the other from her with a grin before turning and gesturing for her to follow. “Car’s out this way,” he called over his shoulder to her as they passed through the crowd of people quickly and out the door, walking towards a large black jeep. The driver who was waiting for them started the engine when he saw them, looking relieved to finally have the air conditioning back on. He looked familiar to her, but she wasn’t sure of his name. Josh hopped in the front seat after he and Casey put her things in the back, turning to converse with the driver about something she didn’t pay attention to. Her focus was more on Casey, who politely held the door open for her, gesturing for her to get in before walking over to the other side, hopping into the opposite window seat. “So, Sara, tell us about you. What you like, what you don’t like, why you wanted to join our team. I mean, other than to marvel at how great I am.” Josh called back to her as they pulled off onto the highway leading into the city. Grinning a bit at his last comment, she shrugged her shoulders a bit, “I like architecture, I don’t like…” she trailed off a bit, not sure what to add to that, not really able to think negatively at that point, “um, nothing I can think of right now. And I wanted to come along so I could see exotic places, and hopefully learn a few things from you, since I’m studying to be an architect.” She finished, happy she didn’t have to go straight into being on camera. She had been worried about messing up and saying something that would end up being made fun of on some talk show. “Really?” Josh turned around to look at her with raised brows, “gotta admit, I expected you to say something about being huge on ghost or something. Since that’s half of what we usually look for.” He grinned a little, saying it as if he wondered if she’d ever seen the show. “Oh, I know about all that stuff. But to be honest I’ve always been a bit of a skeptic.” She murmured, hoping that wouldn’t get her kicked off her temporary spot on the team, but he didn’t seem displeased. “That’s great. Means you won’t freak out about every little thing,” he smiled, “that makes for a good researcher. So what college are you studying at?” “University at Washington; I have two years left, and I’m also interning at a company that works primarily with designing the floor plans for most of Seattle’s main buildings.” She smiled, happy to talk about it. It was the one thing she was truly proud of. “That’s great,” he smiled, “on your way. It’s a tough business to get into and keep up with.” “Yeah, I’m starting to get that.” She laughed, waiting a moment after he laughed with her before deciding it was safe to turn her attention out the window to look at all of the passing buildings. The design of them, color schemes, some she didn’t like so much, others she loved, but either way she admired the work. She could already tell she was going to love the next four months. The rest of the car ride was filled with random conversations and plenty of witty remarks from Josh as they headed towards the hotel she was going to be staying at. Pulling up to it, she looked up in awe at how big it was, not even trying to count the number of stories there were. Casey and Josh both got out before her, going to the back to get her bags. She stared at the window before jumping a bit as the driver laughed. “You can get out now.” He grinned, making her turn red with embarrassment. “Um, yeah, sorry” she laughed a bit, opening the door and hopping out onto the sidewalk, sighing a bit as the warm sun grazed her bare skin. It felt great, she definitely wouldn’t be spending much time inside. The sound of the ocean caught her attention as she looked around, unable to catch site of it. “You’re room will be on the opposite side, you’ll be able to see the beach from there.” Casey grinned, noticing her disappointment at not being able to see the source of the sound. She smiled, touching her bangs absentmindedly as she followed behind the two of them inside and towards the elevator. As they got in, she watched Casey lean forward and press the highest number there was, his arm going in front of her face closely for a moment, letting his scent fill her senses. She felt her stomach flip, he smelt amazing, a small hint of cologne combined with a musky scent. Her mouth watered, and it was hard not to blush as they stood in the small area. She could hardly concentrate on what Josh was saying as he explained what the plan was, but she got enough to not have to ask any questions. They led her to her room, and said their goodbyes before heading off to their own homes. She leaned against the door quietly, looking around at the huge room it led to. It was filled with tarnished wooden furniture, a large king size bed stood against the back wall, two windows on either side of it. On the wall facing it was a large, flat screen TV planted on the wall, connected to several different game consoles, sound systems—which were connected to large speakers that were put up in each corner of the room--, and a DVD/VCR player combined. She stood in awe looking at the black reflective surface of the TV’s screen, before turning to look at the dresser. It was simple enough, short and long, plenty of drawers for all of her clothes. She’d brought practically her entire wardrobe, along with the many new outfits she bought for traveling through tough terrain. The closet was simple enough, and the bathroom was naturally just as amazing as everything else. It was the size of a typical office, the bath and shower both separate. She quickly made a mental note to take a bath in the Jacuzzi tub later. She walked into the next room, which was a simple living room, a large sectional couch was against the back wall, facing a smaller, but still large TV that was placed on top of a dark wooden table. It had a simple DVD player, which was also connected to a surround sound system. The kitchen was connected, complete with a fridge full of food and a note assuring her that it was all taken care of expense wise. She smiled boldly as she skipped over to the sliding glass door that led out onto the deck, being faced with an amazing view of the ocean. It was getting late, and the sun was setting just over the ocean water, leaving a golden gleam on everything. Sara waited until the sun went down on the deck, admiring everything, taking in what she was given the opportunity to do, and just thanking whoever came to mind for it before going to bed, remembering that Josh had told her they were getting a bright and early start tomorrow on their first investigation. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
