Part 1 – Summerboy:
“Maybe you’ll be just my summer boyfriend”
- Lady GagaThe sun was blazing outside, shooting its harmful rays on everything in its path. From inside a large, sky scraper building was a man longingly staring out the window and to the people in the park below. Some were soaking up the sun lying either on their backs or on their fronts, trying to get an even, all over tan. While others were sitting in spots under the shade of large trees, either reading or sleeping. The man envied them greatly.
He wished more then anything that he was outside with them, enjoying the start of the summer season, rather then being trapped inside his office. He knew that he belonged outside with them. He was born and bred in California and while he didn’t necessarily dislike living in New York, his heart yearned for the warmer waters and sand of the west coast. That was where his real home was.
“Zack, what are you doing?” A deep voice broke his daydreaming. He turned to look at the taller man with large muscles bulging underneath his tight fitting work clothing.
“Nothing. Just thinking.” Zack shrugged, turning his attention back to his computer monitor.
“What are you thinking about?” The man pressed on.
“Matt, just get back to your work.” Zack answered, not even looking at the other man. “I’m fine. I don’t need to be watched 24 hours a day.”
“I’m just looking out for you.” Matt tried to reason but got no response from Zack. “I was there when you went through all that stuff with James and I just want to know that none of its getting to you.”
Zack turned his head around to look at his best friend. “I just can’t be bothered with it anymore.” He shrugged. “Just looking out of that window and seeing people enjoying the sun makes me miss home even more. I think I need to go home.”
“What has brought this on?” Matt asked, sounding more then a little concerned.
“The company is making me take a minimum of three weeks holidays and I was just thinking; why don’t I go home for a bit?” Zack shrugged, a small smile pulling at the side of his mouth.
“I’ll come with you.” Matt said quietly.
Zack stared at him warily for a minute. “Um, no thanks.” He answered, seeing the look of hurt in his best friend’s eyes. “You’ll be able to finally spend some time with Val properly without me butting in all the time.”
“She doesn’t mind.” Matt spoke quietly.
“I need some time for myself.” Zack said sternly.
“Are you sure you’ll be alright?” Matt asked.
“I’m going to be fine, Matt.” Zack answered, getting more and more irritated by Matt’s neediness for him. “I’m twenty-nine, not ten.”
Matt grumbled something Zack didn’t quite hear and then walked across the office and back to his desk. Zack took a deep breath before turning his attention back to his computer monitor, mindlessly adding numbers into the data base.
But his mind couldn’t help but notice the bright sun outside that caught on his office window, creating a kaleidoscope of colour through the glass. He smiled as he looked at it. For some unknown reason, it reminded him of home and it made him even more excited to be going back to the picture perfect beaches of Orange County, the sand a soft beige colour while the pristine waters were a magnificent blue, not too dark and not too light, just the colour that the ocean should be.
He looked at his watched and smiled widely. He only had less then an hour left before he could go home and spend his night researching the cheapest flights and accommodation and allocating what sort of spending money he would have. He knew he was far too excited about this then he probably should be but he didn’t care. In less then two weeks, he’d be back home.
Zack continued typing until he began to see his coworkers start to slow down and wait for it to hit five o’clock. He joined them, saving his file and removing his reading glasses before he shut down his computer. He gathered his belongings from his desk as he followed the rest of his coworkers out of their office and down the lift, some heading towards cars while others opted for the large bus shelter that was outside their large building.
Zack headed towards the bus shelter, knowing his bus would be coming any minute now, before he felt a strong hand grab hold of his arm. He turned and saw Matt looking at him. “Do you want a lift home?” He grumbled, almost inaudibly.
Zack shrugged. “Sure.” He smiled at his best friend before following the larger man back towards the car park.
The two stayed silent as they walked towards Matt’s black Jeep, even remaining quiet as they got into their seats and Matt started up the engine. No noise was made by either until they had made their way out of the car park and onto the main road that was jammed with peak hour traffic. Matt propped his left arm on the car door and sighed, knowing they would be there for a while.
“I don’t know how you can do this every day.” Zack joked as he looked out of the window, seeing the many rows of cars backed up from the traffic lights.
“I like the convenience of being able to drive to and from work.” Matt shrugged. He took a deep breath before turning to look at his passenger. “I’m sorry about how I acted before. I guess I just thought since I can’t control my own life that I could try and get some over yours.”
“What are you talking about?” Zack asked, both confused and shocked.
“As soon as Val and I got married, we’ve been trying to get pregnant. But so far we’ve been unsuccessful, obviously.” Matt sighed. “So she’s been reading all this stuff on what she should be doing to get pregnant, how we should be doing it and even when we should be doing it.” He paused again. “It’s taken all the fun out of trying, and I just feel like a sex slave. Sorry.”
“It’s alright, man.” Zack responded. “Maybe you should tell her how you feel about this. Trust me; talking about an issue always makes it better.”
Matt pulled his foot off the break slightly and let his car roll forward just a little bit with the traffic. “Yeah, I guess so.” He shrugged, turning his attention back to the road. “So, do you know what you’re going to do when you go back to California? It’s been a while since you last went back.”
“Ten years.” Zack answered, staring out of the window again.
“Are you alright, man?” Matt asked cautiously, keeping one eye on traffic while he looked at his best friend.
“Yeah, just thinking about family shit I hopefully won’t have to deal with when I go back.” Zack said quietly.
“You never really told me what exactly happened with your family.” Matt said cautiously, knowing it was a touchy subject.
“I don’t want to talk about it.” Zack snapped, making Matt worry a little bit. “I might go to Disney Land.”
“What?” Matt asked, laughing slightly at the random sentence.
“When I go to California, I might go to Disney Land. It’s been a while.” Zack beamed at his friend, remembering fond memories at the theme park.
Matt nearly missed his turn off; distracted by the fact that Zack was smiling so widely. He pulled up on the side of the road that was right in front of Zack’s apartment building. “Thanks for the lift.” Zack smiled as he grabbed his bag, ready to jump out of the car.
“No worries. See you tomorrow.” Matt smiled as Zack climbed out of the car and shut the door, waving at his best friend.
Zack walked into his apartment building, catching the lift up to where his place was. He was grinning from ear to ear as the lift dinged at his floor. He quickly hurried out, knowing he would be spending the rest of his night planning his holiday.
---
The week and a half that Zack spent at work before his holiday seemed to literally fly by. Every day he got more and more excited about going. The first night that he decided he was going to have a look at all the essentials he’d need for his trip, he ended up booking everything. He couldn’t ever remember being so excited about anything before.
He had booked his flight for the first day of his holidays. Matt had agreed to drop him at the airport, although, he looked surprised when he saw how much luggage he had packed. Zack knew he’d packed far too much clothing, but he knew he’d much rather have too many clothes then not enough.
He managed to get his ridiculously large suitcase and backpack through the check in and got onto his flight with no problems whatsoever. The flight was boring, as he was expecting it to be with no in flight entertainment, but his excitement seemed to make it go just a little bit faster. He had reconnected with one of his old friends from high school through Facebook and was more then thrilled to be hanging out with him again.
His flight landed and he made his way off the rather crowded plane, his overfilled backpack nearly bulging at the seams as he made his way through the terminal and towards where the luggage collection was. He retrieved his luggage with not too much hassle before making his way towards the rental car station he’d already made a previous booking with.
He managed to heave his large suitcase into his rental car with not too much effort. He sat down behind the driving wheel of the rather large car. It felt weird to be driving a car this size as he was used to driving his car that was a lot smaller. He attached his GPS device to the centre console of the car, with the address of his rental accommodation already programmed in, and drove towards his destination.
He pulled into the driveway of the small two bedroom house he’d decided to rent for his stay and saw the car of the real estate he’d gone through with the rental and smiled as he got out of his car, his landlord already beaming at him from the front porch.
“Mr. Baker, is it?” The man called out to him. Zack nodded, making the other man’s smile grow impossibly wider. “I’m Jacoby Shaddix and I’ll be your property manager for the next three weeks of your stay.” He reached out his hand to shake Zack’s, who shook back. “Shall we go inside and have a quick look around?”
“Sure thing.” Zack smiled, removing his oversized sunglasses as he followed Jacoby in through the house.
“First time to California?” Jacoby asked as he showed Zack through the house.
“I grew up here, but it’s been over ten years since I last came back.” Zack said quietly.
“Ah okay.” Jacoby smiled. “So where have you been living since?”
“New York.” Zack answered.
“Very nice.” Jacoby commented. “And this is your main bedroom. Here is a copy of all the details you’ll need to know about the house. Here is my contact information in case you run into any trouble. Hope you enjoy your stay here.”
“Thank you.” Zack said quietly, following Jacoby to the front of the house where he waved off the man before he went to his car to move his luggage into his new house for the next three weeks.
When he was alone, he began to appreciate just how wonderful this time by himself would be. Although he knew he would miss Matt’s company, he also knew that this would be a great chance to spend some time alone. The thought of getting away from New York for three weeks and getting away from seeing James flaunting his hot new thing around town was almost incentive enough to get away. He smiled; he might even get himself a summer fling.
He moved his luggage into the house before he remembered that he had to at least text Matt to let him know he’d made it. He pulled out his BlackBerry and sent two texts; one to Matt and another to his high school friend, Johnny. Within a minute, he received a text back from Johnny. The two texted back and forth for a while before Zack texted him his address and Johnny said he’d be over in a little while.
He immediately began unpacking, his ears keenly listening out for a car pulling up in the driveway. He didn’t have to wait long until he heard the telltale sound of a car pulling up in his driveway. He made his way slowly to the front of the house just as he heard the doorbell ring. He opened the door and smiled when he saw a short man covered in tattoos standing there. It was Johnny.
“Long time no see, eh Zacky?” Johnny grinned as he hugged his old friend.
“It’s been a while.” Zack smiled as he let Johnny into his holiday rental home. “How’ve you been? What’s been going on?”
“Not too much. Graduated college with diplomas in business and music, so I own my own music store now.” Johnny answered with a shrug. “I’m mostly single. I’ve had a few long relationships, but I’m not really into that. Being single is way more fun.” He grinned at Zack, who smiled weakly, at a loss of what to say. “So, what’s been happening with you? I was a bit shocked when you contacted me.”
“Why were you shocked?” Zack looked at his old friend with a confused expression on his face.
“We didn’t exactly part ways on the best terms.” Johnny answered simply. “Still gay?”
Zack’s body visibly stiffened. “Yes.” He answered shortly. “I thought you would have gotten over that by now.”
“It takes a while to get over the fact that your best friend tells you he’s gay and then disappears halfway across the country and he doesn’t even bother to tell you where he went to.” Johnny said shortly. “That’s what pisses me off the most. The fact that you left before I could even have a chance to talk to you about it hurt me.”
“I didn’t realize.” Zack said quietly.
“No, you didn’t.” Johnny said softly. “But the fact that you made all this effort to get in contact with me after all these years really made me feel special. I want to stay in contact with you this time.”
“So do I.” Zack said with a smile. “Enough with this emotional shit.”
Johnny laughed. “I’m meeting some friends out in town tonight. Do you wanna come?”
Zack grinned. “Definitely.”
“Okay. I’ll pick you up around 9?” Johnny asked, standing up from his seat. “Well, I gotta run. Gotta pick up a few things before tonight. I’ll honk when I’m out front, okay?”
“Yep, sounds good. I’ll see you later.” Zack said as he walked his friend to his front door and then waved him off.
He closed the door and walked back into the main bedroom and continued unpacking his things. It had been far too long since he’d had a night out on the town; it had been over a year since his last big night out in New York. He checked the time and was slightly alarmed when he saw it was already 5.30pm. He quickly finished unpacking before he went outside and jumped in his car, driving down to the local supermarket to pick up a few supplies that would fill his empty cupboards.
Before long, he found himself dressed and ready to go out, waiting eagerly on his lounge. He could barely sit still, his excitement much too great to not be constantly doing something. He hadn’t realized he was sitting so far forward on his lounge until he heard Johnny’s car honk from outside. He stood up quickly, shut off the television and raced out of the house. He hopped into Johnny’s car and the pair drove off. The drive consisted of Johnny telling Zack all about his friends.
Before long they arrived at their destination, which was a brand new nightclub with bright blue and green neon lights that flashed intermittently. Johnny parked the car before they made their way into the club. The bouncer checked their ID’s with no problems and made their way towards a booth in the corner where Johnny could see his friends sitting, waiting for them.
“Hey guys!” Johnny called out as they approached the table. “This is Zack. He used to be my best friend in High school.” He grinned and Zack smiled sheepishly. “This is Mick, he works for me at my shop.” He pointed to a slim man with semi-long black hair that was parted dramatically to one side. Mick nodded at him. “This is Alex, he also works at my shop.” He gestured to a rather muscular man covered in tattoos with short brown, almost shaven hair. Alex also nodded towards him. “And this is Quinn. He used to work at my shop.” He pointed towards a slender man with bleached blonde hair, who smiled graciously towards Zack.
“Nice to meet all of you.” Zack smiled.
“Oh my fucking god. He can’t leave me alone for twenty-four fucking hours.” Alex grumbled, his eyes pointing towards a man that was approaching their table.
Zack almost couldn’t believe that there was a man that looked so perfect. He was so transfixed by his beauty that he couldn’t find himself able to stop looking at him. The man had a perfectly etched face, with cheek bones in precisely the right the place and a square, masculine jaw with the tiniest bit of facial hair on his chin. But what Zack couldn’t get passed was his alluring brown eyes that were only accentuated by thick circles of eyeliner around each of one of his eyes.
As his eyes travelled lower, he saw numerous tattoos wrapped around bulging biceps. This man’s body looked like he had been carved from stone, his obviously muscular body was not hidden beneath his muscle shirt. Zack could see his pectoral muscles bulging and his abdomen was practically on show. It took so much restraint for Zack not to start drooling. He’d never lusted over someone so badly before.
The man smirked as he saw Zack’s reaction. “And, who is this?” His voice purred as his eyes locked onto Zack.
“Brian, this is Zack.” Quinn said cheerfully. “He’s Johnny’s old High School friend.”
“It is lovely to meet you.” Brian purred again, eyes not moving from Zack.
Zack would not have dropped eye contact if it wasn’t for Johnny’s hard elbow to his side. He looked at Johnny, who mouthed ‘come with me’. The pair excused themselves before retreating into a corridor near the toilets.
“Zack, I know you might think that Brian is some amazing guy because of the way he looks, but I can guarantee he’s not.” Johnny said as quietly as he could. “I’m not saying, you’re not allowed to see him; I’m just letting you know that he’s a player.”
“Why are you saying this?” Zack asked.
“He played Alex and I don’t want to see it happen to another one of my friends.” Johnny said. “Just be careful if you do get involved with him.”
The pair both made their way back towards their booth, finding that Brian had settled himself right where Zack was sitting before. His eyes were watching every one of Zack’s movements, but it didn’t make Zack nervous. It excited him.
He could only guess what the rest of the night would bring.
