It's not difficult to get bored in this place, especially in the months when the sun doesn't shine. It had been up for six hours that day, but we had nothing to do. We had no inspiration left. The entire day had been fruitless to begin with, and when we were finally released from school, we didn't produce anything, either. Ever since three thirty, we had been hanging on Svein's couch, watching terribly uninteresting commercials. It was almost six now.
The only thing we weren't bored with was each other. Talking with Svein was also the only thing that would always keep my attention. We had been discussing so much, it was hard to keep track of all the subjects we had been through. And when we were done with everything that had happened at school, we went to things we had seen or done in the weekends. We jumped from movies to music. And once we got started on those, we had food for hours of conversation. That's why we could laugh out loud at the lamest things. Sometimes Svein's parents overheard us. I noticed because I heard them laughing now and then, at the other side of the room.
I had dinner at his place. I had dinner at his place often, but we somehow hardly ended up at my place. I preferred his house. After we were done eating and helping out with the dishes, we returned to the couch, as if it was a natural instinct. But after a few minutes of blankly staring at the screen, Svein got up.
'This is not like us.'
I looked up to him lazily. 'Isn't it?'
'No. I think it's not. We can think of something to do. It's only a quarter to seven. We have the entire night.'
I smiled and waited for him to do something, feeling too tired to get up. But Svein grabbed me by my wrists and pulled me off the couch.
'Wake up.'
'What are we gonna do then?'
'No idea. But there are things in the garage we could look at. Books on the attic. God, I don't know! Help me out!'
'Fine, fine,' I laughed as he dragged me to the garage.
We went through all kinds of stuff. I got a good look at the car. We looked at some technical equipment of Svein's dad and wondered what their function was. We found a ball and threw it around. We hit a can of paint and it almost fell on the car.
'That was way too close,' Svein said, gasping for breath because he was laughing so hard. 'You're very lucky the lid was still on, Torbjørn Brundtland. My dad will make you pay if you damage his car.'
'I'm sorry,' I said, but I couldn't speak clearly. I sat down on my knees at his feet and grabbed his ankles.
'Forgive me, oh prince Berge,' I managed to say before bursting out in laughter again.
'Rise, prince Brundtland,' Svein said, and gracefully offered me his hand. 'The king will never know.'
We had been in the garage for a longer time than I had expected. I was feeling awake again, and suddenly wanted to go outside. Do something unexpected. Make noise, make a mess. I didn't know how, but I wanted to, even though I didn't tell Svein when I had the chance.
'Hey, look in this cupboard,' Svein said. I sat down next to him and we both inspected the inside of the cupboard to the right.
'Spraypaint.'
'Indeed.'
'What's this stuff?'
'Lemme see.'
Svein opened a can of the stuff that had been sitting on the shelf for months, or maybe longer.
'It's paint or something. But it's not as fluid. It's thick stuff.'
I took it from his hands. There was some kind of red wax inside.
'There's blue in here, too. And white...'
I handed him the can. 'Put it on my face.'
'What, that stuff? Are you serious?'
'Yes. Make stripes. Like this.' I showed him what I meant by moving my index finger over my cheeks.
He looked at me as if he wasn't sure if I was being serious. 'But what if you're allergic?'
'I don't think I am.'
'Well, okay...' he said, still looking at me. When my expression didn't change, he shrugged and dipped his fingers in the can. He reached out for my face, but his hand stopped in midair. 'Wait, do I just put in on like this?'
'Just smear it on.'
Still a bit hesitant, he moved a little closer and touched my cheek. I felt the paint on my skin and shivered because it was cold. Svein was gentle. He hardly touched me. He let his fingers slip over my cheek, making red stripes, looking at the result.
'Done.'
'How do I look?'
He took another long look at me. 'You look cool. A bit scary.'
That was exactly how I had wanted to look. 'Good.'
He cast his eyes down, obviously thinking something over.
'Could you do the same with me?'
My smile became bigger. 'How do you want it?'
He tapped his lips with his fingers. 'I want the blue paint. And I want it like this.' He made two vertical lines, across his eyelids, down to his chin.
'Sure.'
I grabbed the can with blue paint, and put my fingers in. It felt weirder on my fingertips than it had felt on my face.
He closed his eyes when I came closer. I tried to be as careful as I could and made two symmetrical blue lines.
'Are you done?' Svein mumbled.
He looked amazing. I was breathless when I looked at him. I didn't answer, made him think it wasn't finished so I could look at him longer. When I didn't touch him again, he peeked through his eyelashes.
'Hey, is it done?'
'It is.'
'And?'
'It looks good on you.'
He smiled, wanted to touch his cheeks, but backed down before he was about to smudge the paint.
'I wanna check myself in the mirror now,' Svein said, 'but we can't go back to the living room looking like this. They'd think we've gone insane.'
'And maybe we have!'
'Who knows.'
'We could sneak up to the bathroom.'
'Yeah.' Svein looked around. 'Let's do that.'
'Okay.'
Trying to be as quiet as we could, we walked up the stairs in the dark. As soon as we reached the bathroom, Svein locked the door in a quick movement. I switched on the light, and our reflections became visible.
'Nice,' Svein mumbled with a satisfied smile.
He liked it, and no wonder. He was beautiful.
'Let's go outside,' he said, his eyes shining with excitement. 'Let's take those cans of spraypaint and paint something.'
'Where? On the bridge?'
'Yeah. The bridge. Something like that.'
We ran outside with a bag filled with Svein's dad's spraycans. This was exactly the kind of thing I had wanted us to do. I felt like a different person. It was cold outside, and my cheeks turned red because of the chilly wind, but it couldn't harm me. We ran for quite a long time, as if we were fleeing from something, and when we got exhausted, we tried to turn it into a match to see who of us had the most stamina. Every breath of ice cold air hurt my throat. I heard Svein gasp next to me, and he stopped, trying to catch his breath again.
'I'm the best,' I yelled with what was left of my voice.
'Well, obviously,' Svein said after a minute. 'You take one step, I have to take two.'
'That’s because I am the big bad wolf and you're just a bunny.'
'The big wolf. Ha! Why don't you carry this bag?'
We walked the last part of our journey to the big bridge that connected the two halves of the city. There were people on the streets because it was Friday, but we picked the small, empty alleys and streets to get where we wanted to be, without being seen. When we were standing close to the bridge, next to the road and out of the streetlights, my heartbeat was going faster than before. We had passed this bridge hundreds, maybe a thousand times, but I had never looked at it like this. A potential billboard for us. And maybe a way to get ourselves arrested.
It was a good time for Svein to turn around and grin at me, because I would never have done it otherwise. He took the bag off of his shoulder and offered me the first choice. I grabbed the red paint, because red was my identity now, a little. I also wanted the yellow paint. With the cans in my hands, I stared at the concrete in front of us.
'So, what will you make?' Svein asked me when I didn't make a move.
Svein was painting a scary face with a lot of teeth in blue, a few steps to my right. It looked better than my amateur work, but it was a lot smaller. He took a look at what I had done, and I was sure his smile wouldn't leave his face tonight.
'It needs something more,' he mumbled. I looked around. There still wasn't anyone in sight. We didn't hear anything except the sound of the wind. Svein grabbed a can of purple paint we hadn't used yet, and flipped it around as he walked towards the bridge. In large, round, capital letters, he wrote 'PRINSENE AV TROMSØ'.
'There. Writing our initials would be stupid, wouldn't it?'
'We should get out of here before someone passes.'
'There's no one here,' he protested.
'This is a busy road,' I argued.
'Well, we probably should go home anyway, before they notice we're out. If they find out, they'll figure out what we've been doing soon enough.'
With a shock, I suddenly felt the adrenaline in my blood when I realized what that meant. Defeat or glory. All or nothing. If Svein's parents knew we had gone outside, it would be painfully easy to connect this ridiculous grafitti to us. And we would be in the worst trouble we had ever been in.
Somehow, I wasn't afraid at all.
We ran home, laughing, not caring about the consequences of what we had done. Svein chased me, tried to catch me, but I was faster, and I went after him. He yelled when I grabbed him and lifted him in the air.
We put the spraycans back in the exact spot they had been in when we had found them. Then we went to the bathroom and cleaned the colour off our faces, after taking a last look at our warpaint in the mirror. The warm water defrosted my skin.
'You missed a part,' Svein said, and wiped the remaining paint from my nose with a towel.
'So did you,' I said, and pushed the towel in his face.
'Do you think it's dried yet?'
'I guess.'
'I really wanna go back there in the morning, but I think that wouldn't be a smart move.'
'That's what they're expecting us to do!' I said in a low voice.
He laughed. 'It is, I think. We'll have to wait until we 'accidentally' pass it again.'
'It was your idea, you know. You're a criminal now.'
'I'm not. You started it.'
'It'll be in the papers tomorrow. The police is looking for a Svein B. who vandalized Tromsø's famous landmark last night.'
'He wasn't alone. They should arrest Torbjørn B. first. He was the leader. Svein B. was only an accomplice who got dragged along.'
'What are you implying?' I grinned as I pushed him against the bathroom door. 'You better not tell them anything, or I'll make sure you'll never speak again.'
'Oh, I'm so scared,' Svein squeaked. 'You're just sooo intimidating.'
I laughed out loud, but tried to be quiet. 'I'm bluffing. If I get arrested, I'll tell them I did it alone.'
'So would I.'
Svein looked serious, but only for a moment. 'You know, it's pretty bad that we just stained the fucking bridge.'
'No kidding! It's terrible!'
'It's been done before, but the graffiti was removed within a few days. Aw well, at least we have some time to admire our own work.'
I shook my head. 'We should be ashamed of ourselves.'
'I know,' Svein said, looking me in the eyes. 'But I'm not. Are you?'
'No.'
'I'm not even sorry.'
I checked my watch. Past eleven.
'Do you have to go?' Svein asked me, pouting. 'Already?'
'Yeah.'
'Ow, that sucks,' Svein said, and put his arms around my waist unexpectedly. 'I like being with you. I like it when you're the wolf.'
'You do?' I smiled, surprised by the way he was holding me.
'Yes. The wolf is so sexy.'
My face turned red immediately. I couldn't help it. But I smiled.
'Well, I like being with you, too, prince Berge,' I said. 'Even though you could never be a wolf.'
He gave me a punch in the stomach. 'Shut up.'
'You're just mad because it's true.'
He smiled at me as if he was up to something. Before I could say anything, he gave me a kiss on my lips that only lasted a second.
'Don't tell anyone.'
'Oh, I won't.'
My mind was spinning out of control, and I guessed he was feeling the same. We both looked at each other for a while, big smiles, red faces.
'Come on, we'll have to show my parents we've been here all along before you leave.'
'Right.'
Before he switched off the light, he looked at me, then at himself in the mirror.
'Hopefully they won't notice we're completely red.'
By far, the best secret I had ever kept.
